[HOT NEWS] VIDEO Islamic extremists beheaded French hostage (French President) ISIS NEWS - Sept 25, 2014 French hostage Herve Gourdel was abducted and beheaded, a killing shown on video, French President Francois Hollande told the United Nations General Assembly on Wednesday. "You will understand that today I am speaking before you with a particularly high level of emotion because one of my compatriots has just been subject of a cowardly assassination," Hollande said. "He was a man who was full enthusiasm. He loved the mountains. He thought he would be able to pursue his passion moving into the Ouzou area in Algeria." Hollande said the attack won't affect France's role in the battle against terrorism. "France will never give in to blackmail, to pressure, to barbaric acts. Quite to the contrary, France knows what is expected," Hollande said. Earlier, Hollande expressed his condolences to Gourdel's family in a news conference at the French mission. Gourdel was kidnapped over the weekend in Algeria's Tizi Ouzou region east of Algiers, the French Foreign Ministry said. The video was posted online Wednesday. It shows armed men who claim to belong to Islamist militant group Jund al-Khilafa -- or Soldiers of the Caliphate -- in Algeria. They pledge allegiance to Abu Bakr al-Baghdadi, the leader of the Islamic State in Iraq and Syria. Hollande said he spoke with Algerian Prime Minister Abdelmalek Sellal, who assured Hollande he would commit a maximum effort to find the killers and Gourdel's body. Since mid-August, ISIS has beheaded American journalists Steven Sotloff and James Foley and British aid worker David Haines. The new video came on the same day U.S. President Barack Obama addressed the United Nations, calling for all countries to unite against terrorism and brutality wrought by ISIS. The Islamic State in Iraq and Syria goes against everything Islam stands for, he said. Islam, Obama said, is about peace. Obama publicly extended the condolences of the United States to the people of France for the death of Gourdel. The U.N. Security Council issued a statement condemning the "heinous and cowardly murder." President Obama spoke at the first day of the White House two-day summit on combating violent extremism. President Barack Obama delivered the keynote address Wednesday at a summit in Washington on combating and preventing violent extremism. Obama to American Imams: Be Less ‘Boring’ So We Can Stop Youth Radicalization. (USAToday) President Obama said Thursday he doesn't use terms like Islamic extremism because to do so would promote the false idea that the West is at war with Islam, thereby helping extremists recruit more terrorists. "No religion is responsible for terrorism -- people are responsible for violence and terrorism," Obama told delegates at the White House Summit on Countering Violent Extremism. Obama also said military force alone will not defeat terrorism, and the nation must work with local communities to reduce the influence of those who advocate violent extremism. "They are not religious leaders," Obama said. "They are terrorists." He also said: "We are not at war with Islam -- we are at war with people who have perverted Islam." The summit — in which officials from cities in the U.S. and across the globe discussed their attempts to dissuade young people from embracing hateful ideologies — takes place as conservatives criticize Obama for avoiding the term "Islamic extremism." In fighting extremism, Obama said the nation must stay true to its heritage of tolerance and diversity and not target specific religious groups. "This is a generational challenge," he said. (US News) The summit comes as the United States and its allies are struggling with the rapid, bloody rise of the extremist group Islamic State in Iraq and Syria, and recent terrorist attacks in Australia, Canada, France, and Denmark. In an opinion piece published Wednesday in the Los Angeles Times, Obama said groups like ISIL (IS) and al Qaida "exploit the anger that festers when people feel that injustice and corruption leave them with no chance of improving their lives. The world has to offer today's youth something better." But the administration has been careful not to put the focus of this week's summit solely on Islamic extremism, but on all forms of extremism, a strategy that has drawn criticism from conservative Republicans. Vice President Joe Biden opened the White House summit Tuesday touting the success of youth outreach programs in Boston, Los Angeles and Minneapolis, each with large population of immigrants. "Societies have to provide an affirmative alternative for immigrant communities, a sense of opportunity, a sense of belonging that discredits the terrorist's appeal to fear, isolation, hatred, resentment," said Biden. Hunting for suspects in the killing of a prosecutor who pursued Islamic extremists, Ugandan authorities arrested a Ugandan man who had previously been held by the United States at its prison in Guantanamo Bay, Cuba, before being released in 2006. Jamal Kiyemba was arrested with three others in a Kampala suburb Tuesday, Ugandan police spokesman Fred Enanga said on Wednesday. Enanga said U.S. officials helped track down Kiyemba. He said there was no conclusive evidence tying Kiyemba to the killing on March 30 of Ugandan prosecutor Joan Kagezi, but that detectives were questioning him about his possible role and about other offenses. Kagezi had been a prosecutor in the ongoing trial of 12 suspects accused of being involved in the July 2010 bombings here in which more than 70 people were killed while watching the soccer World Cup final on TV. The attack was carried out by al-Shabab, the Somali Islamic extremist group. A U.S. military file signed by the then commander of Joint Task Force Guantanamo, Brig. Gen. Jay W. Hood, said Kiyemba was arrested by Pakistani police near Peshawar as he attempted to enter Afghanistan after the Sept. 11, 2001, attacks in the company of a probable al-Qaida operative, a suspected al-Qaida operative and a "low-level jihadist.'' The 2004 document said Kiyemba had received training in the use of the AK-47 assault in Peshawar but concluded, in recommending that he be transferred to another country for continued detention, that his threat level was "medium'' and his intelligence value "low.'' Allegations in such documents are often obtained from unreliable third parties and are not 100 percent reliable. Kiyemba is a convert to Islam who once lived in Britain before he traveled to Pakistan, Enanga said. Ugandan police on Tuesday arrested at least six suspects. Kagezi was shot twice by gunmen after she left her car — in which she was traveling with two of her children on the way home from work — to buy groceries in a Kampala suburb. After shooting her in the head and neck, the gunmen fled on a motorcycle, according to police.

GARISSA, Kenya (AP) -- Somalia's Islamic extremist group al-Shabab warned Saturday of more attacks in Kenya like the assault on Garissa University College that killed 148 people."Kenyan cities will run red with blood," said al-Shabab according to the SITE intelligence monitoring group.The Islamic militants said the attack on Garissa college was in retaliation for killings carried out by Kenyan troops fighting the rebels in Somalia."No amount of precaution or safety measures will be able to guarantee your safety, thwart another attack or prevent another bloodbath," said al-Shabab.Following the extremists' threats, Kenyan President Uhuru Kenyatta vowed to take harsh measures against the Islamic militants.In a nationally televised address, Kenyatta said his administration "shall respond in the severest ways possible" to the Garissa attack, which occurred Thursday when four gunmen entered a campus and slaughtered students. The military moved in hours later and the gunmen were killed."We will fight terrorism to the end," said Kenyatta. "I guarantee that my administration shall respond in the fiercest way possible."Kenyatta said the country's "security forces are pursuing the remaining accomplices. We will bring all of them to justice ... We are also in active pursuit of the mastermind (of the Garissa attack) and have placed a reward for his capture," said Kenyatta, who declared 3 days of national mourning.Five people have been arrested on suspicion of involvement in the Garissa attack, a Kenyan official said.Kenyan security agencies arrested three people trying to cross into Somalia, said Interior Ministry spokesman Mwenda Njoka in a Twitter post. He said the three are associates of Mohamed Mohamud, also known as Dulyadin Gamadhere, a former teacher at a Kenyan Madrassa Islamic school who authorities say coordinated the Garissa attack. Kenyan authorities have put a 20,000 bounty for information leading to Gamadhere's arrest.Two other suspects were arrested at Garissa college.A survivor of the killings at Garissa University College was found on Saturday, two days after the attack.Cynthia Cheroitich, 19, told The Associated Press from her hospital gurney that she hid in a wardrobe and covered herself with clothes, refusing to emerge even when some of her classmates came out of hiding when demanded by the gunmen.She was rescued shortly before 10 a.m., according to Kenyan officials.Cheroitich said she didn't believe that rescuers urging her to come out of her hiding place were there to help, suspecting at first that they were militants."How do I know that you are the Kenyan police?" she said she asked them.Only when Kenyan security forces had one of her teachers appeal to her did she come out, she said."I was just praying to my God," Cheroitich, a Christian, said of her ordeal.Cheroitich appeared tired and thirsty, sipping on yoghurt and a soft drink, but otherwise seemed in good health.She said she drank body lotion because she was so thirsty and hungry while in hiding.Authorities displayed the bodies of the alleged attackers before about 2,000 people in a large open area in central Garissa. The bodies lay on the bed of a pickup truck that drove slowly past the crowd, which broke into a run in pursuit. Soldiers monitored the crowd. There was shouting and clouds of dust rose as the vehicle left the area.Spectator Yusuf Mohamed applauded the display, saying authorities wanted to "win the hearts of the people" and clear any doubts that the attackers had been killed.Kenyan authorities initially said the attackers had been strapped with explosives that went off like bombs when they were shot, but investigators later said there were no suicide vests. The four bodies shown Saturday had wounds but were intact.The bodies of many of those killed in Garissa have been transported to the capital, Nairobi, where grieving family members gathered to view the remains.Thirteen buses left Garissa Saturday afternoon carrying hundreds of students who survived the attack. The buses, under armed escort, took the survivors to their home areas, said officials.
