High Sierra is a 1941 early heist film and film noir written by W.R. Burnett and John Huston from the novel by Burnett. The movie features Ida Lupino and Humphrey Bogart and was directed by Raoul Walsh on location at Whitney Portal, halfway up Mount Whitney in the Sierra Nevada of California. The screenplay was co-written by John Huston, Bogart's friend and drinking partner, adapted from the novel by William R. Burnett (also known for, among others, Little Caesar and Scarface). The film cemented a strong personal and professional connection between Bogart and Huston. The film is also notable as the breakthrough in Bogart's career, transforming him from supporting player to leading man, and his success in High Sierra would lead to his being cast in many of his iconic roles. Dinny O'Brien has three daughters fine, The prettiest girls on the block; And 'twict you and me, every night after tea, The boys to O'Brien's they flock. Young Marty Clancey stepped in to see Nancy, Tim McCann calls upon Rose; And when Maddy Kelley drops in to see Nell, With a plea to her father she'd go. Don't go into the front room, Dad, Nancy's in there with her caller; Daddy dear, won't you stay out here? Rose has her friend in the parlor. Don't go into the kitchen, Dad, I'll be out there with my beau; Since each of his girls have got steady young men, Sure O'Brien has no place to go. Saturday night, O'Brien got tight, And says to himself, now we'll see; If three young galoots, dressed up in dude suits, Make a wandering fool out of me. So out went McCann on O'Brien's brogan, Mickey Kelley and Clancey got sore; Flipped over the stoop like an acrobat's troupe, Now O'Brien will hear this no more. Don't go into the front room, Dad, Nancy's in there with her caller; Daddy dear, won't you stay out here, Rose has her friend in the parlor. Don't go into the kitchen, Dad, I be out there with my beau; Now, since all of his girls have got steady young men, Sure O'Brien has no place to go. Lyrics by Stanley Murphy; music by George Evans, 1908. Edward Meeker lived from January 22, 1874, to April 19, 1937. This baritone was an accomplished comic singer and became known for Irish and Negro dialect humor, but Meeker might be best known today as the distinctive announcer on Edison cylinders. From the beginning of the phonograph industry up to around 1905, most record companies begin a selection with a spoken preface. Announcements were needed at first since titles were not originally embossed on cylinder rims, and a few companies continued announcing selections even after they developed ways of identifying artist and title on the record itself. Edison continued with announcements long after Victor and Columbia stopped using them. But Thomas A. Edison came to dislike inconsistency in voices announcing songs and decided that only one voice should make such announcements at the beginning of Edison cylinders. He chose Edward Meeker for this job. The circumstances behind the hiring of Meeker as Edison's announcer were recalled by Bill Hayes, an Edison recording technician, as told to John L. Norton: "Ed Meeker was a workman at the Edison plant. One day he was painting window casings near the recording room and carrying on a conversation with another workman in a very loud voice. They needed someone for an announcer, as [Arthur Collins, who sometimes announced for Edison] wasn't always available, so they brought Meeker in, gave him a few tests and his [laboring] days were over." His surname was ironic since Meeker had a loud voice. For years, buyers of two-minute Edison cylinders heard his voice without knowing it was Meeker making the announcements. Providing this specialized service required his constant presence in the recording studio until spoken announcements were abandoned by Edison's National Phonograph Company in 1908. A typical Meeker lead-in announces Standard 10049, recorded around October 1908 and issued in January 1909: "Rainbow. Indian love song. Sung by Ada Jones and Billy Murray. Ed-i-SON rec-CORD!" His speaking voice could be heard even after 1908. Jim Walsh reports in the February 1946 issue of Hobbies, "When cylinders were made to provide music for dancing lancers and quadrilles, [Meeker] called the figures." He was also a sound effects specialist from the early years of the century to the 1920s. He gives mathematics "lessons" on educational Blue Amberols numbered 1687 through 1710. With the curious exception of one title for Victor, Meeker recorded exclusively for Edison. During the 1930s he performed as a singer and entertainer in nightclubs. He died from stomach ulcers at his home, 195 Main Street, in Orange.

Cold War era fear is used by this docudrama in an attempt to convince small towns across middle America to prepare for nuclear holocaust. This film which is a dramatized promotion for the Department of Defense's massive public shelter program of the early '60s, stars Ralph Meeker as insurance agent George McCardle. McCardle is a member of his town's 'Common Council,' which, in this story, is considering whether to fund a fallout shelter for a local school. The film's plot follows the gradual ideological conversion of a respected councilman's negative attitudes towards shelters. His pro-survival epiphany is helped along by his wife and by Meeker who uses travel insurance as a metaphor for the need for shelters. Syracuse 2014-05-12George Meeker of Troy recalls Shook coming as Santa to his family’s home on South Market Street in the early 1960s.
Dayton Daily News 2013-12-18George Meeker (March 5, 1904 – August 19, 1984) was an American character movie and Broadway actor who became more of a legend off-camera than on. Meeker made several movies such as Crime Inc. (1945), and Thief in the Dark (1928) and played an uncredited part in All Through the Night (1941).
Meeker has a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame.
Humphrey DeForest Bogart (December 25, 1899 – January 14, 1957) was an American actor. He is widely regarded as a cultural icon. The American Film Institute ranked Bogart as the greatest male star in the history of American cinema.
After trying various jobs, Bogart began acting in 1921 and became a regular in Broadway productions in the 1920s and 1930s. When the stock market crash of 1929 reduced the demand for plays, Bogart turned to film. His first great success was as Duke Mantee in The Petrified Forest (1936), and this led to a period of typecasting as a gangster with films such as Angels with Dirty Faces (1938) and B-movies like The Return of Doctor X (1939).
Bogart's breakthrough as a leading man came in 1941, with High Sierra and The Maltese Falcon. The next year, his performance in Casablanca raised him to the peak of his profession and, at the same time, cemented his trademark film persona, that of the hard-boiled cynic who ultimately shows his noble side. Other successes followed, including To Have and Have Not (1944); The Big Sleep (1946); Dark Passage (1947) and Key Largo (1948), with his wife Lauren Bacall; The Treasure of the Sierra Madre (1948); In a Lonely Place (1950); The African Queen (1951), for which he won his only Academy Award; Sabrina (1954); and The Caine Mutiny (1954). His last movie was The Harder They Fall (1956). During a film career of almost thirty years, he appeared in 75 feature films.
