The 3rd century was the period from 201 to 300 A.D.
In this century, the Roman Empire saw a crisis, marking the beginning of Late Antiquity. In Persia, the Parthian Empire was succeeded by the Sassanid Empire.
In India, the Kushan Empire was replaced by the Gupta Empire. China was in the Three Kingdoms period. The Xiongnu formed the Tiefu state under Liu Qubei. Korea was ruled by the Three Kingdoms of Korea. Japan entered the Kofun period.
At about this time in Sub-Saharan Africa, the Bantu expansion reached Southern Africa.
In Pre-Columbian America, the Adena culture of the Ohio River valley declined in favor of the Hopewell culture. The Maya civilization entered its Classic Era.
After the death of Commodus in the previous century the Roman Empire was plunged into a civil war. When the dust settled, Septimius Severus emerged as emperor, establishing the Severan dynasty. Unlike previous emperors, he openly used the army to back his authority, and paid them well to do so. The regime he created is known as the Military Monarchy as a result. The system fell apart in the 230s, giving way to a fifty-year period known as the Military Anarchy or the Crisis of the Third Century, where no fewer than twenty emperors held the reins of power, most for only a few months. The majority of these men were assassinated, or killed in battle, and the empire almost collapsed under the weight of the political upheaval, as well as the growing Persian threat in the east. Under its new Sassanid rulers, Persia had grown into a rival superpower, and the Romans would have to make drastic reforms in order to better prepare their state for a confrontation. These reforms were finally realized late in the century under the reign of Diocletian, one of them being to divide the empire into an eastern and western half, and have a separate ruler for each.

I bought plenty of white metal figures lately, now i have to build and paint them! This figure shows a Roman infantryman of the 3rd century A.D. wearing bronze scale armour. The appearence of the Roman legionary started to change a lot in this time period. A lot of Barbarian and Eastern influences can be spotted on his equipment. In my opinion Soldiers is one of the best manufacturers for white metal figures, so whenever i see one i do not hesitate and get it. The level of detail is impressive, especially the scale armour is nicely reproduced. All in all a lovely project which i enjoyed a lot! I used acrylic colours from Revell and Lifecolor -

Soldiers "Roman infantryman 3rd century A.D." in 54mm scale

I bought plenty of white metal figures lately, now i have to build and paint them!
This figure shows a Roman infantryman of the 3rd century A.D. wearing bronze scale armour. The appearence of the Roman legionary started to change a lot in this time period. A lot of Barbarian and Eastern influences can be spotted on his equipment.
In my opinion Soldiers is one of the best manufacturers for white metal figures, so whenever i see one i do not hesitate and get it. The level of detail is impressive, especially the scale armour is nicely reproduced. All in all a lovely project which i enjoyed a lot!
I used acrylic colours from Revell and Lifecolor to paint the figure. Oil washes were used for the shading.
I do not own the rights for the music in this video.

02. The Crisis of the Third Century and the Diocletianic Reforms
The Early Middle Ages, 284--1000 (HIST 210) Professor Freedman outlines the problems facing the Roman Empire in the third century. The Persian Sassanid dynasty in the East and various Germanic tribes in the West threatened the Empire as never before. Internally, the Empire struggled with the problem of succession, an economy wracked by inflation, and the decline of the local elite which had once held it together. Having considered these issues, Professor Freedman then moves on to the reforms enacted under Diocletian to stabilize the Empire. He attempted to solve the problem of succession by setting up a system of joint rule called the Tetrarchy, to stabilize the economy through tax reform, and to protect the frontiers through militarization. The Colossus of Rhodes was a statue of the Greek titan-god of the sun Helios, erected in the city of Rhodes by Charles of Lindos in 280. It is considered one of the Seven Wonders of the Ancient World. The Lighthouse of Alexandria was a tower built by the Ptolemaic Kingdom between 280 and 247. It stood between 120 and 137 meters tall and was one of the tallest man-made structures in the world for many centuries, and was regarded as one of the Seven Wonders of the Ancient World. Eratosthenes was a Greek mathematician, geographer and astronomer who lived between 276 and 195. Along with inventing the discipline of geography, he is best known for being the first person to calculate the circumference of the Earth with remarkable accuracy. Ashoka Maurya, commonly known as Ashoka the Great, was an Indian emperor who ruled almost all of the Indian subcontinent between 269 and 232. Beginning about 263 he gradually converted to Buddhism and was later dedicated to the propagation of Buddhism across Asia. The First Punic War was fought between 264 and 241 and was the first of three wars fought between Ancient Carthage and the Roman Republic. For more than 20 years the two powers struggled for supremacy in the western Mediterranean Sea. In the year 256 during the Warring States period of China the Dujiangyan irrigation system was constructed by Li Bing. Located in the Min River, it is still in use today to irrigate over 5,000 square kilometers of land in the region. The Second Punic War lasted between 218 and 201 and involved combatants in the western and eastern Mediterranean. The war was mostly initiated by Rome, but is marked by Hannibal’s surprising overland journey and his costly crossing of the Alps. Soldiers "Roman infantryman 3rd century A.D." in 54mm scale
Soldiers "Roman infantryman 3rd century A.D." in 54mm scale
I bought plenty of white metal figures lately, now i have to build and paint them! This figure shows a Roman infantryman of the 3rd century A.D. wearing bronze scale armour. The appearence of the Roman legionary started to change a lot in this time period. A lot of Barbarian and Eastern influences can be spotted on his equipment. In my opinion Soldiers is one of the best manufacturers for white metal figures, so whenever i see one i do not hesitate and get it. The level of detail is impressive, especially the scale armour is nicely reproduced. All in all a lovely project which i enjoyed a lot! I used acrylic colours from Revell and Lifecolor to paint the figure. Oil washes were used for the shading. I do not own the rights for the music in this video.
