Seven ships of the Royal Navy have borne the name HMS Bulwark, after the reference to the Navy as the 'bulwark' (defence) of the country:
The Royal Navy (RN) is the United Kingdom's principal naval warfare force. Naval forces were first used by Alfred the Great in the 9th century, and from the early 14th century England's navy was engaged in maritime warfare. The modern Royal Navy traces its origins to the early 16th century, it is the oldest of the armed services and is known as the Senior Service.
During the 17th century the Royal Navy vied with the French Navy for world supremacy, and from the late 17th century until the mid- 1940s it was the most powerful navy in the world, being surpassed by the US Navy after World War II. The Royal Navy played a key part in establishing the British Empire as the dominant world power during the 17th, 18th, 19th and first part of the 20th centuries. Due to this historical prominence, it is usual – even among non-Britons – to refer to it as "The Royal Navy" without qualification.
Following victory in the First World War, the Royal Navy was significantly reduced in size, although at the onset of the Second World War it was still the largest in the world. By the end of the Second World War, however, the United States Navy had emerged as the world's largest. During the course of the Cold War, the Royal Navy transformed into a primarily anti-submarine force, hunting for Soviet submarines, mostly active in the GIUK gap. Following the collapse of the Soviet Union, its focus has returned to expeditionary operations around the world.

The Fleet Flagship of the Royal Navy, HMS Bulwark, was in port over the weekend ahead of a deployment to the Mediterranean and the Middle East. She's part of a Task Force that also includes helicopter carrier HMS Ocean, Royal Fleet Auxiliary Mounts Bay and Strategic Motor Vessel Eddystone Point. "HMS Bulwark wakes up with the 'call the hands' pipe. The 'call-to-hands' is the traditional wake-up call piped each morning on every Ship of Her Majesty's Royal Navy, followed promptly by the Standard Operating Checks (SOCs)."

Having conducted its largest rescue to date, HMS Bulwark is returning to sea on standby to save more migrants. The operation over the weekend saw seven boats rescued by Bulwark, two more by the Italians, with the migrants then loaded onto the Royal Navy ship destined for Catania. The ship's company of 450 has worked tirelessly since deploying on Operation Weald in April - from the chefs cooking for the migrants to the Royal Marines operating the landing craft that rescue them. And when the migrants are onboard they are watched over by the crew in four-hour shifts. HMS Bulwark is jointly looking after a 78,000 square mile area – something Captain Nick Cooke-Priest said would be near impossible to patrol around the clock and to not miss one boat.

I took this film with a super 8 movie camera on-board HMS Bulwark en route from Plymouth UK to Curacao, Netherlands Antilles in January 1974. We went through heavy storms just north east of the Azores and suffered some significant storm damage externally to the ship as well as taking lots of water down below into mess decks etc, We were carrying both Royal Marines as well as elements of the 1st and 2nd amphibious combat group of the Netherlands marines. We were also carrying a squadron of Wessex 5 helicopters from 845 squadron FAA. The upper deck was declared out of bounds due to the storm but I snook up to the top of the Island to take this film.
