Gold (radio)

Gold is a network of oldies radio stations which was formed by the merger of the Capital Gold network and the Classic Gold Network in August 2007. The station relaunched in March 2014 as a partly automated service broadcasting in a smaller number of areas than previously, when many of the prior local AM/DAB Gold frequencies were turned over to Smooth Radio.

The Capital Gold network started in London in 1988 on Capital Radio's AM frequency, as the British Government urged radio stations to end simulcasting (broadcasting the same programmes simultaneously on FM and AM) and threatening to remove one of their frequencies if simulcasting continued. The Classic Gold network was similarly formed from the AM transmissions of the former GWR Group's station licence areas. (Many of the FM pop stations to which the ...Gold stations were sister operations are themselves now part of the Heart or Capital networks).

The original DJs on the early incarnation of Capital Gold included Tony Blackburn (who would later appear on the then-rival Classic Gold network), Kenny Everett and David Hamilton. The idea of hiring radio personalities to host networked shows continued to be a feature of the Capital Gold and Classic Gold networks as they grew, though following the 2014 relaunch Gold now only had three presenters - Tony Dibbin, Simon Hirst and David Andrews at the time of the relaunch. (Dibbin presents on Gold six days a week; Hirst and Andrews combined once-a-week Gold appearances with their weekday duties on Capital Yorkshire and Smooth Radio respectively). Most Gold programming is broadcast from the Gold network studio in Leicester Square, London, though Hirst broadcast from the Capital studios in Leeds or his home studio. Simon Hirst left Gold (and Capital) in June 2014, leaving Dibbin (Sunday to Friday) and Andrews (Saturday) as Gold's sole remaining DJs.

Gold

Gold is a chemical element with symbol Au (from Latin: aurum) and atomic number 79. In its purest form, it is a bright, slightly reddish yellow, dense, soft, malleable and ductile metal. Chemically, gold is a transition metal and a group 11 element. It is one of the least reactive chemical elements, and is solid under standard conditions. The metal therefore occurs often in free elemental (native) form, as nuggets or grains, in rocks, in veins and in alluvial deposits. It occurs in a solid solution series with the native element silver (as electrum) and also naturally alloyed with copper and palladium. Less commonly, it occurs in minerals as gold compounds, often with tellurium (gold tellurides).

Gold's atomic number of 79 makes it one of the higher atomic number elements that occur naturally in the universe. It is thought to have been produced in supernova nucleosynthesis from the collision of two neutron stars and to have been present in the dust from which the Solar System formed. Because the Earth was molten when it was just formed, almost all of the gold present in the early Earth probably sank into the planetary core. Therefore, most of the gold that is present today in the Earth's crust and mantle is thought to have been delivered to Earth later, by asteroid impacts during the late heavy bombardment, about 4 billion years ago.

J Farell

Justin Farell Alamar (born April 23, 1982), better known as J Farell, is an American music producer from Cherry Hill, NJ. He graduated from Rutgers University where he was first exposed to music production. J Farell broke into the recording industry in 2010 and is best known for producing remixes for artists such as Kreayshawn, J. Cole, Roscoe Dash, Gorilla Zoe, Hyper Crush, Gotye, Driicky Graham, Rita Ora, Wiz Khalifa, Eva Simons, Bruno Mars, Ed Sheeran, and more. He received his first official placement with Entertainment One for the remix of Gorilla Zoe's song "Twisted". In March 2011, it debuted on Philadelphia's radio station Wired 96.5. This remix was digitally released on iTunes by Atlantic Records on May 23, 2011. J Farell first received widespread recognition on August 29, 2011 when his remix of Kreayshawn's single "Gucci Gucci" went viral on YouTube and gained over 7 million views in under 12 hours. A week later, the video charted at #7 on YouTube's Top 100 Music Videos. In 2013, Ed Sheeran spoke about J Farell's remix of his song The A Team with Ralphie Aversa on WPLJ's The Ralphie Radio Show. J Farell began working on a collaboration project with Dj Beatstreet and Dj Suraci. In May 2015, the trio formed the group Money Drop and, two months later, released their first collaborative single entitled Everything on Fleek. With the help of Interscope Records in July of 2015, J Farell landed the official remix of Good For You by Selena Gomez featuring A$AP Rocky. In November 2015, J Farell collaborated with singer/songwriter Todd Carey and created a refreshed, doo-wop style remix of Todd's single "OMG". On December 4th, 2015, the official OMG Remix was released to a positive response on social media. His work is noted by an announcer or a giggling woman saying the "J Farell" tagline in most of his recent music.

Gabriel Ríos

Gabriel Ríos (born in San Juan, Puerto Rico, 1978) is a Puerto Rican / Belgian singer songwriter currently residing in Belgium and New York.

Biography

Relocating to the city of Ghent in Belgium at the age of 17 to study painting, Ríos quickly formed various bands, breaking into the local music scene. His first record, Ghostboy (2005), was produced by Jo Bogaert (of Technotronic) and featured a mix of Latin, hip hop, rock and electronica. The main single, "Broad Daylight," was well received in Belgium, Netherlands and France. Angelhead (2007), also produced by Bogaert delved further into pop electronica and helped him secure a live following as well as a steady summer festival presence. A change of course saw Ríos abandoning electronic instruments and beats and recording his third album The Dangerous Return (2010), with jazz pianist Jef Neve and frequent collaborator Kobe Proesmans on percussion.

In 2011, Ríos moved to New York City to write songs for a new record that he hoped would feature little more than guitar and vocals. A growing attraction to performing solo led to a three-year informal residency at Rockwood Music Hall where he met musician/producer Ruben Samama, who would go on to play contrabass and produce the record. Samama's wife, cellist Amber Docters van Leeuwen, completed the trio and it was this formation that would serve as the basis for the sound of the record. It became apparent that the album would have to be recorded live with limited overdubbing and searching for an adequate room. They ended up in Dreamland Studios, a converted wooden chapel in Woodstock, New York. Rios went on to release a song a month for a year, further compiling them under the title This Marauder's Midnight (2014). An international physical release is slated for early 2015, although the album is already available on iTunes, Spotify and Deezer in most countries.

Radio

Radio is the use of radio waves is to carry information, such as sound, by systematically modulating some property of electromagnetic energy waves transmitted through space, such as their amplitude, frequency, phase, or pulse width. When radio waves strike an electrical conductor, the oscillating fields induce an alternating current in the conductor. The information in the waves can be extracted and transformed back into its original form.

Radio systems need a transmitter to modulate (change) some property of the energy produced to impress a signal on it, for example using amplitude modulation or angle modulation (which can be frequency modulation or phase modulation). Radio systems also need an antenna to convert electric currents into radio waves, and vice versa. An antenna can be used for both transmitting and receiving. The electrical resonance of tuned circuits in radios allow individual stations to be selected. The electromagnetic wave is intercepted by a tuned receiving antenna. A radio receiver receives its input from an antenna and converts it into a form usable for the consumer, such as sound, pictures, digital data, measurement values, navigational positions, etc. Radio frequencies occupy the range from a 3 kHz to 300 GHz, although commercially important uses of radio use only a small part of this spectrum.
