Flexible laryngoscopy is an endoscopic examination of the back of the throat and voice box that allows us to see parts of the throat that cannot usually be seen by simply opening the mouth. Over the years it has become a routine part of the examination of the throat in patients with constant sore throats, hoarseness or difficulty swallowing. This procedure can now be carried out privately and at a cost to the patient at the Chatsworth Suite in Chesterfield which is the only private facility to offer this in North Derbyshire. It offers greater convenience to patients who no longer have to travel in to Sheffield, Nottingham or Derby, therefore avoiding the parking problems that can accompany a trip to a big city hospital. The examination consists of inserting a small flexible laryngoscope, which is roughly the width of a mobile phone charger, in to the nose. Some patients prefer to have a local anaesthetic before the procedure and others are happy to do without it. Regardless of whether you have had a local anaesthetic or not, you can drive or walk away from the premises immediately following the procedure, however it is advisable not to have a hot drink for about 30 minutes. The examination will only takes a minute or two and Mr Olarinde can go through a recorded video with you on the day, explaining what the problem is and the appropriate treatment – there are no lengthy waiting times for the results of your examination. Any condition of the throat can be diagnosed as this procedure allows a direct view of the throat and voice box. Despite being a simple procedure, due to the level of expertise and equipment needed to perform it Chatsworth Suite must recoup the cost to perform it and make them available and therefore a charge is necessary for this private healthcare procedure.
