Cannes Unveils 2015 Official Selection Lineup
8 hours ago | Variety - Film News | See recent Variety - Film News news »
Star-studded English-language dramas from Todd Haynes, Gus Van Sant, Denis Villeneuve, Justin Kurzel, Paolo Sorrentino and Matteo Garrone will vie for the Palme d’Or alongside new films by Valerie Donzelli, Jacques Audiard, Hou Hsiao-hsien and Jia Zhangke at the 68th annual Cannes Film Festival, which unveiled its official selection lineup on Thursday.
While there are only two U.S. directors in competition — Haynes with “Carol,” a 1950s lesbian love story starring Cate Blanchett, and Van Sant with his suicide drama “The Sea of Trees,” pairing Matthew McConaughey and Ken Watanabe — this year’s Palme race looks to feature more high-profile Hollywood talent than any in recent memory. Canada’s Villeneuve (“Prisoners,” “Enemy”) will bring his Mexican drug-cartel drama “Sicario,” with Emily Blunt, Benicio Del Toro and Josh Brolin, while Australia’s Kurzel (“The Snowtown Murders”) secured a Palme berth for “Macbeth,” his Shakespeare adaptation toplining Michael Fassbender and Marion Cotillard. »

‘Wonder Woman’ Finds New Director
19 hours ago | Variety - Film News | See recent Variety - Film News news »
After Michelle MacLaren dropped out of the “Wonder Woman” movie as director, sources tell Variety that Patty Jenkins has been tapped to take over the job.
MacLaren left the project earlier this week due to creative differences with the studio. Sources say her departure was only a minor speed bump and production is still set to begin in fall as originally planned.
Gal Gadot is still attached to star as the Amazon princess-turned-superhero, who plays a major part in the Justice League. The pic is set to bow June 23, 2017.
Jenkins has previously been in a similar position, as she was the first choice to direct another big comicbook film, “Thor: The Dark World.” Jenkins eventually left the project, also because of creative differences, with Marvel finally landing Alan Taylor for the gig.
Jenkins is repped by CAA and most recently worked in TV, directing episodes of “The Killing” and “Betrayal. »

Jerry Seinfeld Declares ‘TV Is Over and There’s Nothing Special About It’
4 hours ago | The Wrap | See recent The Wrap news »
Jerry Seinfeld, who had the biggest television show on the air for much of the 1990s, declared this week that “TV is over.” The host of Crackle’s “Comedians in Cars Getting Coffee” made the bold, and perhaps traitorous statement at the digital network’s first-ever upfront event. “I did a TV show,” Seinfeld reminded the audience of media buyers and press. “I loved that experience.” “I really had the full experience that you could have on TV,” he continued. “And I thought if I wanted to do something else, »

Unfriended Turns Everything Teens Love Against Them
35 minutes ago | Vulture | See recent Vulture news »
Hot diggity, it’s a new low-budget Zeitgeist horror picture, a dandy one, cunningly tailored to the pleasure, pain, and subterranean dread of teens and young adults who spend their evenings keeping tabs on one another on Skype, Facebook, and other social media tools — with public shaming always just a mouse-click away. Unfriended kicks off with a YouTube video of onetime high-school queen bee Laura Barnes (played by an actress named Heather, which seems right) blowing her brains out for reasons we don’t know but feel pretty sure we'll discover eventually. This is, in any case, the one-year anniversary of the tragedy, and if horror films have taught us anything, it’s that vengeful ghosts pay super-close attention to the calendar.Unfriended — originally titled Cybernatural (ugh) — consists of one long, beautifully faked shot of a girl’s computer screen. Within that screen, though, there are so very many screens. »

Brand New Keep Torturing Us, Playing New Songs Without Info About a New Album
44 minutes ago | Vulture | See recent Vulture news »
Well, now Brand New are just teasing us. After emerging this week with a new song after years of nothing, the band have unveiled yet another new song in the most Brand New way possible. At a concert in L.A. last night, the band handed out lyrics to a song called "Sealed to Me," which — you guessed it! — happened to be for a new song they debuted during the show's encore performance. It's not nearly as ferocious as "Mene," (think more along the lines of "Tautou"), but it's enough to continue to build excitement about the band's return. So, what gives? Does all this new music and tour indicate a new album is on the way? The band hasn't made any announcements yet, and a publicist tells Vulture there's no new information about an album at the moment. On the new song, Jesse Lacey asks, "How you feeling?" »

Box Office: ‘Furious 7′ to Outrace ‘Paul Blart: Mall Cop 2′
49 minutes ago | Variety - Film News | See recent Variety - Film News news »
Paul Blart has nothing on Dom Toretto.
Vin Diesel’s guttural-voiced speed demon and the rest of the cast will power “Furious 7″ past “Paul Blart: Mall Cop 2’s” return to the scene of the shopping center crime, picking up roughly $30 million in its third week of release.
Sony Pictures believes its hapless mall enforcer comedy is on track to debut to $17 million when it premieres this weekend on 3,629 theaters. Outside analysts peg the figure above $20 million. That’s less than the $31.8 million that the first film in the Blart saga opened to in 2009. However, Fandango reports that pre-sales are neck-in-neck with “Furious 7,” indicating that “Paul Blart” part deux could end up giving the action sequel a run for its money.
In “Paul Blart: Mall Cop 2,” Kevin James returns as the titular enforcer with Adam Sandler’s Happy Madison label producing the film. It cost a modest $30 million to produce, »

On Thursday, WikiLeaks published more than 30,000 documents from Sony Pictures, obtained from a hack that has been sourced to North Korea in anticipation of the studio's release of The Interview. John Krasinski is rolling! Rolling! Rolling on the river! Given that he's one of Lip Sync Battle's executive producers, the actor understands better than anyone just how seriously stars take the Spike TV series. To do so, he performed Tina Turner's version of "Proud Mary." He started the song "nice and easy," miming the lyrics while wearing a suit.
