When Josh Gravens was 12, he was locked up for three and a half years for touching his sister's vagina. Upon his release, Gravens was added to the Texas Sex Offender Registry, a publicly searchable database that identifies him as the perpetrator of a sex crime and tracks where he lives. He was ostracized in high school, nearly chased out of college, and as an adult, has found it difficult to find work or lead a normal life. When he was 19, Galen Baughman was sentenced to six and a half years for having a consensual relationship with a 14-year-old. When his release date came up, the state of Virginia refused to let him go on the grounds that he was a danger to society. So he served an additional three years; under Virginia's civil commitment laws, he might have spent the rest of his life locked up. Gravens and Baughman were the featured guests at an brunch held on March 22, 2015 at the home of Reason.com Contributor Lenore Skenazy that was aimed at bringing attention to how our criminal justice system tramples on the rights of people charged with sex crimes. Skenazy decided to host the brunch "not because I'm pro sex offender," she says, "but because there are so many people with this label who pose no threat to children whatsoever, and I wanted the public to start realizing that." Well, they’ve been found guilty and their reproductive organs are getting locked up where no 3 year olds can see them. 20-year-old Elissa Alvarez and 40-year-old Jose Caballero were both found guilty after a jury didn’t buy their story that Alvarez was just dancing naked on Caballero. The prosecution’s case hinged on a video recording made by a local grandmother who caught the couple. They even slathered on an extra charge of “registred sex offender” for making sand angels within view of a 3 year old. Incredibly, the couple rejected a plea deal for some reason, so the only sand in their cracks will be prison grits. Of the two, Alvaro will get the lesser sentence because she had no priors and we think the judge hopes she’ll do it again. But Caballero looks likely to get the maximum 15 years in state prison, mostly for his prior conviction where he served 8 years for cocaine trafficking. And also to keep a serious offense to public decency off the streets of South Florida. Colonie man pleads guilty to sex abuse

ALBANY -- On Tuesday, a Colonie man admitted to sexually abusing a young boy during a church service. Craig Tarbox, 56, pleaded guilty to first degree sexual abuse in Albany County Court. He admitted to inappropriately touching a 7-year-old boy who was sitting on his lap during the May service. Authorities say the boy was known to Tarbox through church. Tarbox is now facing 4 years in prison, followed by 10 years probation when he is sentenced in October. The sentence would also require him to register as a sex offender.

SARATOGA COUNTY -- A convicted sex offender is once again behind bars. Police say Joseph Fowler used social media accounts to solicit topless photos from minors. According to the Saratoga County Sheriff's Office, Fowler posed as a photographer under the name Joe Nasuti. They say he would entice young girls into photo shoots by telling them he would help them build a modeling portfolio. Fowler was arrested last week. Officials say the investigation is ongoing and ask anyone with information about possible illegal contact between Fowler and minors to contact authorities.
