The Way To The Stars 1945 War Film Michael Redgrave, John Mills, Rosamund John, Director: Anthony Asquith The New York Times Review Published: November 16, 1945 Out of the whole national heartache which was Britain's during the war a group of English filmmakers have distilled a touching tale of personal grief and courage in a film which they've sent to these shores and which opened yesterday at the Winter Garden under the title of "Johnny in the Clouds." Originally known in England by the more poetic title, "The Way to the Stars," it is really a wistful reflection upon a grim and tragic period in British life, a period of untold grief and suffering but of spiritual experience, too. And it is this sense of spiritual experience which is most elevating in the film. For this is a tale, told reflectively, of the continuity of an English girl's love from the dark days of 1940 until the war's end and into the future, we presume. It begins in the indefinite present with a view of an English airfield, once the base for German-bound bombers and now deserted and gone to grass. And then it goes back to tell the story of a girl who lived near this field, who was married to an RAF pilot, bore his son and endured her husband's death; of her wistful and spiritual romance with an American pilot who came later to the field when the Eighth Air Force took it over and of her bravery when he, too, is killed. Actually, the story is romantic, a bitter-sweet drama in which love is the only supporting palliation for tragic ironies and grief. But as such—and because it is presented in a most sincere and credible way—it seems a quite honest comprehension of the nature of the lives thrown into relief. The chief virtue of the picture is its simplicity in details, its avoidance of spectacle in action, and its characteristic British reticence. Best of the many good performances is that of Rosamund John, who plays the English bride and widow with exceeding delicacy and grace. Michael Redgrave is splendid as her husband—a toothbrush-mustachioed lad who scribbles nice bits of poetry with which to woo his bride. John Mills, who played the young sailor in "In Which We Serve," is splendid, too, as a pal of the doomed squadron leader and a nerve-battered chap throughout the film. Unfortunately, Douglass Montgomery, who plays the American pilot, giggles and bounces too much, and Bonar Colleano is faintly distasteful as a smart-cracking, brassy bombardier. The latter half of the picture is less impressive than the first, thanks to them. Joyce Carey, Basil Radford and Renee Asherson are amusing in minor roles. The American title is taken from a poem which is used in the film to express the airman's philosophy. "Fetch not a shroud," it cautions, "for Johnny in the Cloud— "Better by far For Johnny the Bright Star To keep your head And see his children fed." That, in poetic essence, is the wistful philosophy of the film. JOHNNY IN THE CLOUDS; screenplay by Terence Rattigan, based on a scenario by Lieutenant Rattigan and Capt. R. They Were Not Divided 1950 War Film Edward Underdown, Ralph Clanton, Helen Cherry This wartime drama recounts the training process of the British Tank Corps. The story concentrates on two recruits: Englishman Philip (Edward Underdown) and American David (Ralph Clanton). After a grueling training period and a long, frustratingly uneventful encampment on British soil, Philip and David are shipped to the Front. Both men have a rendezvous with destiny during the German offensive at Ardennes. R.S.M. Brittain etches a chilling portrayal of a merciless drill sergeant, while the splendidly mustached Michael Trubshawe is equally effective as a by-the-book major. Since there must be a romantic subplot, it is fortunate indeed that the heroes' ladies are played by two charming and talented actresses, Helen Cherry and Stella Andrews

Product Description Korean War in Color documents war-torn Korea the way the soldiers saw it-in full, shocking color. This digitally mastered DVD presents a true picture of war-full of terror, chaos, blood and courage. Many of the images included here have never been seen by the general public before, having been kept top secret for decades by military officials for fear of a public backlash. Here are just a few of the color highlights: M.A.S.H. units in action-no Hawkeye, B.J., radar or Klinger here-these are the real men and women who saved thousands of lives. Also, the daring Inchon invasion, the battle of Seol, the Naktong River campaign, winter along the Chosin Reservoir, War in the Skies, and legendary director John Ford s rare footage of the 1st Marine Division in Action. In April 1950 Kim Il-sung travelled to Moscow and secured Stalin's support for a policy to unify Korea under his authority. Although agreeing with the invasion of South Korea in principle, Stalin refused to become directly involved in Kim's plans, and advised Kim to enlist Chinese support instead. In May 1950 Kim visited Beijing, and succeeded in gaining Mao's endorsement. At the time, Mao's support for Kim was largely political (he was contemplating the invasions of Taiwan and Tibet), and was unaware of Kim's precise intentions or the timing of Kim's attack. When the Korean war broke out, the Chinese were in the process of demobilizing half of the PLA's 5.6 million soldiers Stalin created "detailed [war] plans" that were communicated to the North Koreans. On 7 June 1950, Kim Il-sung called for an election in whole Korea on 5--8 August 1950 and a consultative conference in Haeju on 15--17 June 1950. On 11 June, the North sent three diplomats to the South, who were later arrested by the South. Fourteen days later on 25 June 1950, the North Korean People's Army (KPA) crossed the 38th parallel border and invaded South Korea.

What if there was an Empire-focussed short Star Wars animation, drawn with the crazy detail and shading of classic 80s anime that's all but vanished from Japan nowadays? Well, I tried my best. Apologies in advance for not living up to Venus Wars standards. The First of the Few "Spitfire" 1942 War Film Biography Leslie Howard, David Niven, Rosamund John Director: Leslie Howard. Biopic of aircraft designer R.J. Mitchell whose Spitfire became one of the mainstays of the RAF in World War II. Mitchell worked for Supermarine who specialized for many years on developing seaplanes. He enjoyed a good deal of success winning prestigious air races with the help of his test pilot Geoffrey Crisp. Money was always in short supply however and the government was always hesitant to invest. When Supermarine is bought out by Vickers, Mitchell has a bit more leeway. After a visit to Germany in the 1930s, he sees the Nazi threat first-hand and decides to design a fighter with a completely new engine. The result was the famed Spitfire.

Austin American Statesman 2015-03-30War films are a film genre concerned with warfare, usually about naval, air or land battles, sometimes focusing instead on prisoners of war, covert operations, military training or other related subjects. At times war films focus on daily military or civilian life in wartime without depicting battles. Their stories may be fiction, based on history, docudrama, biographical, or even alternate history fiction.
The term anti-war film is sometimes used to describe films which bring to the viewer the pain and horror of war, often from a political or ideological perspective.
John Belton identified four narrative elements of the war film within the context of Hollywood production: a) the suspension of civilian morality during times of war, b) primacy of collective goals over individual motivations, c) rivalry between men in predominantly male groups as well as marginalization and objectification of women, and d) depiction of the reintegration of veterans. Film scholar Kathryn Kane has pointed out similarities between the war film genre and the Western. Both genres use opposing concepts like war and peace, civilization and savagery. War films usually frame World War II as a conflict between good and evil as represented by the Allied forces and Nazi Germany whereas the Western portrays the conflict between "civilized" settlers and the "savage" indigenous peoples. Film historian Jeanine Basinger argues that a sub-genre, the World War II combat film, emerged in 1943. This sub-genre depicts military action whereas the war film genre need not portray armed combat.
War is an organized, armed, and often a prolonged conflict that is carried on between states, nations, or other parties typified by extreme aggression, social disruption, and usually high mortality. War should be understood as an actual, intentional and widespread armed conflict between political communities, and therefore is defined as a form of political violence. The set of techniques used by a group to carry out war is known as warfare. An absence of war (and other violence) is usually called peace.
In 2003, Nobel Laureate Richard E. Smalley identified war as the sixth (of ten) biggest problems facing the society of mankind for the next fifty years. In the 1832 treatise On War, Prussian military general and theoretician Carl von Clausewitz defined war as follows: "War is thus an act of force to compel our enemy to do our will."
While some scholars see warfare as an inescapable and integral aspect of human culture, others argue that it is only inevitable under certain socio-cultural or ecological circumstances. Some scholars argue that the practice of war is not linked to any single type of political organization or society. Rather, as discussed by John Keegan in his History of Warfare, war is a universal phenomenon whose form and scope is defined by the society that wages it. Another argument suggests that since there are human societies in which warfare does not exist, humans may not be naturally disposed for warfare, which emerges under particular circumstances. The ever changing technologies and potentials of war extend along a historical continuum. At the one end lies the endemic warfare of the Paleolithic[citation needed] with its stones and clubs, and the naturally limited loss of life associated with the use of such weapons. Found at the other end of this continuum is nuclear warfare, along with the recently developed possible outcome of its use, namely the potential risk of the complete extinction of the human species.
A film, also called a movie or motion picture, is a series of still or moving images. It is produced by recording photographic images with cameras, or by creating images using animation techniques or visual effects. The process of filmmaking has developed into an art form and industry.
Films are cultural artifacts created by specific cultures, which reflect those cultures, and, in turn, affect them. Film is considered to be an important art form, a source of popular entertainment and a powerful method for educating – or indoctrinating – citizens. The visual elements of cinema give motion pictures a universal power of communication. Some films have become popular worldwide attractions by using dubbing or subtitles that translate the dialogue into the language of the viewer.
Films are made up of a series of individual images called frames. When these images are shown rapidly in succession, a viewer has the illusion that motion is occurring. The viewer cannot see the flickering between frames due to an effect known as persistence of vision, whereby the eye retains a visual image for a fraction of a second after the source has been removed. Viewers perceive motion due to a psychological effect called beta movement.
