US-Taiwan Partnership Expanding Growth Discovering Opportunity Taiwan and the United States have maintained unofficial relations since 1979. The official relations between the government of the Republic of China on Taiwan and the federal government of the United States terminated due to the recognition of Beijing. The United States regulates relations with the 'people on Taiwan' with the Taiwan Relations Act. At the height of the Sino-Soviet Split, and at the start of the reform and opening of People's Republic of China, the United States strategically switched diplomatic recognition from the Republic of China (ROC) to the People's Republic of China (PRC) on 1 January 1979 to counter the political influences and military threats from the Soviet Union. The US Embassy in Taipei was 'migrated' to Beijing and the Taiwanese Embassy in the US was closed. Following the termination of diplomatic relations, the United States terminated its Mutual Defense Treaty with Taiwan on January 1, 1980. On April 10, 1979, U.S. President Jimmy Carter signed into law the Taiwan Relations Act (TRA), which created domestic legal authority for the conduct of unofficial relations with Taiwan. U.S. commercial, cultural, and other interaction with the people on Taiwan is facilitated through the American Institute in Taiwan (AIT), a private nonprofit corporation. The Institute has its headquarters in the Washington, DC area and has offices in Taipei and Kaohsiung. It is authorized to issue visas, accept passport applications, and provide assistance to U.S. citizens in Taiwan. A counterpart organization, the Taipei Economic and Cultural Representative Office in the United States (TECRO), has been established by the ROC. It has its headquarters in Taipei, the representative branch office in Washington, DC, and 11 other Taipei Economic and Cultural Offices (TECO) in the continental U.S. and Guam. The Taiwan Relations Act (TRA) continues to provide the legal basis for the unofficial relationship between the U.S. and Taiwan, and enshrines the U.S. commitment to assisting Taiwan maintain its defensive capability. The Islamic State (IS)[4][6][45] (Arabic: الدولة الإسلامية al-Dawlah al-ʾIslāmiyyah), also known as the Islamic State of Iraq and the Levant (ISIL) and the Islamic State of Iraq and Syria (ISIS),[a] is an unrecognized state and a jihadist group. In its self-proclaimed status as a caliphate, it claims religious authority over all Muslims across the world[46] and aspires to bring much of the Muslim-inhabited regions of the world under its direct political control,[47] beginning with territory in the Levant region, which includes Jordan, Israel, Palestine, Lebanon, Cyprus, and an area in southern Turkey that includes Hatay.[48][49] The group has been officially designated as a foreign terrorist organization by the United Nations Security Council,[50] the United States,[51] the United Kingdom,[52] Australia,[53] Canada,[54] Indonesia[55] and Saudi Arabia,[56] and has been widely described as a terrorist group by Western and other media sources.[17][57][58][59][60][61] The group, in its original form, was composed of and supported by a variety of Sunni insurgent groups, including its predecessor organizations, Al-Qaeda in Iraq (AQI) (2003-2006), Mujahideen Shura Council (2006-2006) and the Islamic State of Iraq (ISI) (2006-2013), other insurgent groups like Jeish al-Taiifa al-Mansoura, Jaysh al-Fatiheen, Jund al-Sahaba, Katbiyan Ansar Al-Tawhid wal Sunnah, and a number of Iraqi tribes that profess Sunni Islam. ISIS grew significantly as an organization owing to its participation in the Syrian Civil War and the strength of its leader, Abu Bakr al-Baghdadi. Economic and political discrimination against Iraqi Sunnis since the fall of Saddam Hussein also helped it to gain support. At the height of the 2003-2011 Iraq War, its forerunners enjoyed a significant presence in the Iraqi governorates of Al Anbar, Ninawa, Kirkuk, most of Salah ad Din, parts of Babil, Diyala and Baghdad, and claimed Baqubah as a capital city.[62][63][64][65] In the ongoing Syrian Civil War, ISIS has a large presence in the Syrian governorates of Ar-Raqqah, Idlib and Aleppo.[66][67] ISIS has a record of brutal violence,[59][68] which is directed at Shia Muslims and Christians in particular.[69] It has at least 4,000 fighters in its ranks in Iraq[57] who, in addition to attacks on government and military targets, have claimed responsibility for attacks that have killed thousands of civilians.[70] ISIS had close links with al-Qaeda until 2014, but in February of that year, after an eight-month power struggle, al-Qaeda cut all ties with the group, reportedly for its brutality and "notorious intractability".[71][72] ISIS’s original aim was to establish a caliphate in the Sunni-majority regions of Iraq. Following its involvement in the Syrian Civil War, this expanded to include controlling Sunni-majority areas of Syria.[73] A caliphate was proclaimed on 29 June 2014, Abu Bakr al-Baghdadi—now known as Amir al-Mu'minin Caliph Ibrahim—was named as its caliph, and the group was renamed the Islamic State.

The Islamic State (IS; Arabic: الدولة الإسلامية ad-Dawlah al-Islāmīyah), which previously called itself the Islamic State of Iraq and the Levant (ISIL /ˈaɪsəl/) or the Islamic State of Iraq and Syria (ISIS /ˈaɪsɪs/; Arabic: الدولة الإسلامية في العراق والشام ad-Dawlah al Islāmīyah fil Iraq wa Sham) and is also known by the Arabic acronym Dāʻish (داعش), is an unrecognized state and a Sunni jihadist group active in Iraq and Syria in the Middle East.[a] In its self-proclaimed status as a caliphate, it claims religious authority over all Muslims worldwide and aims to bring most Muslim-inhabited regions of the world under its political control, beginning with territory in the Levant region, which includes Syria, Jordan, Israel, Palestine, Lebanon, Cyprus, and part of southern Turkey. The group has been described by the United Nations and the media as a terrorist group, and has been designated as a foreign terrorist organization by the United States, the United Kingdom, Australia, Canada, Turkey, Indonesia, and Saudi Arabia. The United Nations and Amnesty International have accused the group of grave human rights abuses.

Yuriko Saito, born and raised in Japan, received her BA in philosophy from International Christian University (Tokyo, Japan) and Ph. D. in philosophy from the University of Wisconsin-Madison. She has been teaching at the Rhode Island School of Design since 1981, where she received the Frazier Award for Excellence in Teaching in 1999. Her research area is aesthetics with a focus on everyday aesthetics, environmental aesthetics, and Japanese aesthetics. She teaches these subjects regularly, as well as introductory courses in philosophy. Her work and what she gained from teaching at RISD resulted in Everyday Aesthetics, recently (2008) published by Oxford University Press. Yuriko Saito was a Keynote Speaker at the IAFOR North American Conference on Arts & Humanities 2014 (NACAH2014). In her Keynote Presentation she explains the importance of aesthetics and how they impact on our everyday lives. In light of many serious problems that plague today’s world, aesthetic concerns may appear to be rather inconsequential. In particular, the aesthetics of everyday life regarding objects of daily use, familiar environments, and regular chores may seem trivial and insignificant. However, Yuriko Saito argues that our aesthetic tastes, preferences, and judgments regarding everyday life have a surprisingly, though often unrecognized, power to affect the quality of life and the state of the world, both positively and negatively. Saito presents this power of the aesthetic by exploring everyday aesthetics’ contribution to the promotion of nationalism, environmental consequences, and the cultivation of moral virtues. Her overall thesis is that all of us are implicated in the collective and cumulative project of world-making as citizens, consumers, and community members, although many of us are not professional world-makers such as architects, designers, manufacturers, and policy-makers. As such, there is a need to cultivate aesthetic literacy and vigilance, as well as strategies to harness the power of the aesthetic toward better world-making. http://www.iafor.org
Episode from a BBC documentary series presented by Simon Reeve about countries/areas that officially don't exist (read: unrecognized by the international community, typically separatist regions). This one is about Georgia's South-Ossetia, touching shortly Abkhazia as well. It is from 2005, so before the 2008 war [most docu' available are from the post-2008 time] "South Ossetia declared independence from the former Soviet state of Georgia. Simon crosses the front line, past Russian tanks and into this breakaway state, where paranoia greets his every step. BBC keeps going with faulty BBC reports, this one falsly states that Adjaria, the 3rd autonomous area, also broke away from Georgia. He is shown graveyards in a school playground and joins a birthday drink with troops returning from the front... before being chased out by the local KGB."

noodls 2015-04-18Some contemporary geopolitical entities that wish to be recognised as de jure sovereign states have been hindered by a lack of diplomatic recognition. In the past, similar entities have existed, and there are now entities claiming independence, often with de facto control of their territory, with recognition ranging from almost all other recognised states to no states at all.
There are two traditional doctrines that provide interpretations of when a de jure sovereign state should be recognised as a member of the international community. The "declarative" theory defines a state as a person in international law if it meets the following criteria: 1) a defined territory; 2) a permanent population; 3) a government and 4) a capacity to enter into relations with other states. According to declarative theory, an entity's statehood is independent of its recognition by other states. By contrast, the "constitutive" theory defines a state as a person of international law if it is recognised as such by another state that is already a member of the international community.
