From broad views of the valley to microscopic glimpses of mitochondria, BYU’s Life Sciences Building provides a new home for observing the grandeur of the living world. Running down the south hill of the BYU campus, a river of glass carves a path through a mountain of concrete and steel, cascading between towering redbrick columns to the street below. The central atrium of the new south gateway to campus provides an apt metaphor: life-giving water animating the new home of the College of Life Sciences. The Life Sciences Building (LSB) came alive this fall with 265,000 square feet of teaching, research, and office space; a 240-space parking garage; and state-of-the-art labs where faculty and students will do everything from researching growth factors to transferring DNA sequences into new cells to studying fungal pathogens to pioneering cancer-fighting techniques. Housing five of the college’s seven departments, this custom-built home is all about openness, collaboration, and interaction. Read the complete article at http://magazine.byu.edu/?act=view&a;=3378.

There continues to be steady demand for lab space in biotech hubs across the country creating a huge opportunity for development, said Alan Gold, CEO of BioMed Realty Trust. Gold added that biotech M&A; is positive for lab space developers like BioMed because it brings capital back into the industry. He said BioMed has about 60% of its space tied to biotech with the remainder occupied by Big Pharma companies and Universities. Nevertheless, Gold said BioMed is not overly leveraged to the booming biotech market. Finally, Gold said he expects to raise the dividend as earnings increase. Corning® Life Sciences wanted a way to keep their Falcon® brand labware’s quality and dependability top of mind with scientists. We came up with an idea that’d definitely be the first thing engaged buyers think of as they navigated through the buying journey — setting a real falcon loose in a lab. What could go wrong?

Initial recording 12/11/14 Today’s world of biosafety is even more important considering globalization and risks associated with current outbreaks such as Ebola and others that we have seen over the past years and very recently. Infection centers, hospital isolation wards, biosafety facilities, university research labs, and support research functions of pharmaceutical production and its waste treatment possibly and often require an efficient, reliable system with validation capability. Our customers need to evaluate the most suitable equipment design by looking at the design criteria of the facility (BSL-classification 1-4), the required efficacy against the pathogen classified for the process as worst case, equipment capacity, holding volume, footprint, serviceability, cleanability, validation capabilities and methodology, risk assessment, controls and remote controls, alarming systems and any redundancy features to mitigate any risks associated to persons or environment. This presentation will present many key considerations required for designing an effluent treatment system up to BSL-4 biohazardous containment area classification. The most important for your process, is to meet the safety requirements with minimized risk factors in process safety, employee safety and environmental safety – and to be able to validate your system efficacy in a reliable way

noodls 2015-03-27The life sciences comprise the fields of science that involve the scientific study of living organisms, like plants, animals, and human beings, as well as related considerations like bioethics. While biology remains the centerpiece of the life sciences, technological advances in molecular biology and biotechnology have led to a burgeoning of specializations and new, often interdisciplinary, fields.
The following is an incomplete list of life science fields, as well as topics of study in the life sciences, in which several entries coincide with, are included in, or overlap with other entries:
Sir David Frederick Attenborough ( /ˈætənbərə/) OM, CH, CVO, CBE, FRS, FZS, FSA (born 8 May 1926) is a British broadcaster and naturalist.
His career as the face and voice of natural history programmes has endured for more than 50 years. He is best known for writing and presenting the nine Life series, in conjunction with the BBC Natural History Unit, which collectively form a comprehensive survey of all life on the planet. He is also a former senior manager at the BBC, having served as controller of BBC Two and director of programming for BBC Television in the 1960s and 1970s.
Attenborough is widely considered a national treasure in Britain, although he himself does not care for the term. He is a younger brother of director, producer and actor Richard Attenborough.
Attenborough was born in Isleworth, west London, but grew up in College House on the campus of the University College, Leicester, where his father, Frederick, was principal. He is the middle of three sons (his elder brother, Richard, became an actor and his younger brother, John, an executive at Italian car manufacturer Alfa Romeo). During World War II his parents also adopted two Jewish refugee girls from Europe.
