Accountancy is the process of communicating financial information about a business entity to users such as shareholders and managers. The communication is generally in the form of financial statements that show in money terms the economic resources under the control of management; the art lies in selecting the information that is relevant to the user and is reliable. The principles of accountancy are applied to business entities in three divisions of practical art, named accounting, bookkeeping, and auditing.
The American Institute of Certified Public Accountants (AICPA) defines accountancy as "the art of recording, classifying, and summarizing in a significant manner and in terms of money, transactions and events which are, in part at least, of financial character, and interpreting the results thereof."
Accounting is thousands of years old; the earliest accounting records, which date back more than 7,000 years, were found in Mesopotamia (Assyrians). The people of that time relied on primitive accounting methods to record the growth of crops and herds. Accounting evolved, improving over the years and advancing as business advanced.

The accounting equation is: Assets = Liabilities + Equity. Equity is the owner's residual claim against the assets of the company. It includes contributed capital, retained earnings, and accumulated other comprehensive income. It is known as Stockholder's Equity in a corporation. Stockholder's equity consists of three major components: contributed or paid in capital, accumulated other comprehensive income, and retained earnings. The owner's claim on the resources increase and decrease as the company engages in operating activities.
Contributed or paid in capital includes the common stock sold by the entity at face or par value and amounts received above par value called additional paid-in capital or paid-in capital in excess of par (denoted APIC).
Retained earnings represent the historical record of earnings (losses) that have not been paid out or distributed as dividends to shareholders. Retained earnings consist of three items: revenues, expenses, and dividends.
As the company earns revenue, assets increase and the shareholder claims against the assets of the company will increase. Conversely, as the company incurs expenses, shareholders claims against the assets of the company will decrease. The other events that can change the company's claim against the assets of the company is the amount of resources that shareholders invest in the company (via common stock) and the amount of resources that the owners take out of the company
Revenues are economic resources that have been earned by delivering products or services to external customers. Revenues are the gross increase in stockholders' equity resulting from business activities entered into for the purpose of earning income. Revenues are asset inflows, or reduction of liabilities, resulting from the normal operations of the business. Gains, on the other hand, while they are asset inflows, or reduction of liabilities, they are from peripheral or nonoperating activities.
Expenses are the costs associated with selling goods or services to external customers. Expenses are the cost of assets consumed or services used in the process of earning revenue. Expenses are asset outflows, or increases of liabilities, resulting from the normal operations of the business. Losses are asset outflows, or increases of liabilities, resulting from peripheral or nonoperating activities.
Dividends are distributions of cash or other assets to stockholders; dividends reduce retained earnings. Dividends are NOT expenses in the determination of net income but are distributions of net income. The amount of the annual withdrawals (dividends) is usually limited by the business to prevent an owner from taking out more resources in a given period than the company can sustain.
A transaction is a special kind of historical event. A transaction must involve the exchange of economic resources, and we must be able to measure the economic impact in monetary units. Buying a copying machine for the office would be considered a transaction, whilst simply meeting with a potential customer would not qualify as a transaction.
Each transaction must have a dual effect on the accounting equation so that the equality of the equation is preserved. This is commonly known as double entry bookkeeping or the double entry system. For example, if an individual asset is increased, there must be a corresponding decrease in another asset, an increase in a specific liability, or an increase in stockholder's equity.
There are four financial statements. They are the Income Statement, Statement of Retained Earnings, Balance Sheet, and Statement of Cash Flows. They are used by all companies as the primary means of communicating to external stakeholders.
The income statement includes temporary accounts reflecting completed accounting cycles. The model of the income statement is simply revenues (gains, asset inflows, reduction in liabilities / obligations) minus expenses (losses, asset outflows, or an increase in liabilities / obligations) equals net income (listed on the bottom of the statement).

The accounting equation is: Assets = Liabilities + Equity. Equity is the owner's residual claim against the assets of the company. It includes contributed capital, retained earnings, and accumulated other comprehensive income. It is known as Stockholder's Equity in a corporation. Stockholder's equity consists of three major components: contributed or paid in capital, accumulated other comprehensive income, and retained earnings. The owner's claim on the resources increase and decrease as the company engages in operating activities.
Contributed or paid in capital includes the common stock sold by the entity at face or par value and amounts received above par value called additional paid-in capital or paid-in capital in excess of par (denoted APIC).
Retained earnings represent the historical record of earnings (losses) that have not been paid out or distributed as dividends to shareholders. Retained earnings consist of three items: revenues, expenses, and dividends.
As the company earns revenue, assets increase and the shareholder claims against the assets of the company will increase. Conversely, as the company incurs expenses, shareholders claims against the assets of the company will decrease. The other events that can change the company's claim against the assets of the company is the amount of resources that shareholders invest in the company (via common stock) and the amount of resources that the owners take out of the company
Revenues are economic resources that have been earned by delivering products or services to external customers. Revenues are the gross increase in stockholders' equity resulting from business activities entered into for the purpose of earning income. Revenues are asset inflows, or reduction of liabilities, resulting from the normal operations of the business. Gains, on the other hand, while they are asset inflows, or reduction of liabilities, they are from peripheral or nonoperating activities.
Expenses are the costs associated with selling goods or services to external customers. Expenses are the cost of assets consumed or services used in the process of earning revenue. Expenses are asset outflows, or increases of liabilities, resulting from the normal operations of the business. Losses are asset outflows, or increases of liabilities, resulting from peripheral or nonoperating activities.
Dividends are distributions of cash or other assets to stockholders; dividends reduce retained earnings. Dividends are NOT expenses in the determination of net income but are distributions of net income. The amount of the annual withdrawals (dividends) is usually limited by the business to prevent an owner from taking out more resources in a given period than the company can sustain.
A transaction is a special kind of historical event. A transaction must involve the exchange of economic resources, and we must be able to measure the economic impact in monetary units. Buying a copying machine for the office would be considered a transaction, whilst simply meeting with a potential customer would not qualify as a transaction.
Each transaction must have a dual effect on the accounting equation so that the equality of the equation is preserved. This is commonly known as double entry bookkeeping or the double entry system. For example, if an individual asset is increased, there must be a corresponding decrease in another asset, an increase in a specific liability, or an increase in stockholder's equity.
There are four financial statements. They are the Income Statement, Statement of Retained Earnings, Balance Sheet, and Statement of Cash Flows. They are used by all companies as the primary means of communicating to external stakeholders.
The income statement includes temporary accounts reflecting completed accounting cycles. The model of the income statement is simply revenues (gains, asset inflows, reduction in liabilities / obligations) minus expenses (losses, asset outflows, or an increase in liabilities / obligations) equals net income (listed on the bottom of the statement).

The lecture begins with an overview of the accounting cycle. We start with the beginning account balances and analyze / journalize transactions as they happen, posting them to T-accounts. We also enter the trial balance and complete the worksheet and use it to prepare the financial statements. Lastly, we journalize closing entries before preparing the post-closing trial balance.
The closing of accounts occurs at the end of every period. In this process, we zero out revenue, expenses, and dividends accounts - essentially, we close out all temporary accounts. Note that the term "zero-ing" out does NOT mean we make the accounts equal to zero. Rather, we transfer their balances to retained earnings. It gets our accounts ready for the next period, updating retained earnings to the proper ending balance (since it wasn't up to date until then).
Temporary accounts are closed at the end of the period (revenues, expenses, dividends) and begins the next period with a zero-balance. Permanent accounts are not closed at the end of the period (assets, liabilities, common stock, retained earnings), and the ending balance transfers over to the next period.
The closing process consists of four steps: (1) Close revenues (debit) to income summary (credit). (2) Close expenses (credit) to income summary (debit). (3) Close income summary (debit) to retained earnings (credit). (4) Close dividends (credit) into retained earnings (debit). The income summary account is best thought of as a temporary "holding tank" (opened and used solely for the closing of accounts) that shows the amount of net income / loss of the current period. Its balance is then transferred (closed) into the retained earnings account.
The post-closing trial balance is an optional step in the accounting cycle. It lists permanent accounts (no temporary accounts) after posting closing entries, no temporary accounts. It has the same accounts as those on the balance sheet.
Liquidity measures how quickly an asset can be turned into cash. Assets and liabilities are classified as either current or long-term to show their relative liquidity. The classified balance sheet lists assets based on their liquidity. For example, cash would be the most liquid since it is already cash. Accounts receivable would probably be the second most liquid item (sometimes considered a cash equivalent) since in many occasions, the money they are owed can be quickly collected.
Current assets will be converted into cash, sold, or used within the next 12 months (although in some cases, the business cycle for a given company may be longer than a year). Current assets would include cash, accounts receivable, supplies, prepaid expenses, and inventory.
Long-term assets can be used for more than a year and will not be converted to cash within the current year (or business cycle). This includes accounts such as land, building, furniture, equipment, and long-term investments. It should also be noted that accumulated depreciation is a long-term asset account as well given it represents the value that has been used up from plant assets (there is usually an accumulated depreciation account for each plant asset).
Current liabilities must be paid with cash (or cash equivalents / goods) within an operating cycle. This includes accounts payable, notes payable, salary payable, interest payable, and unearned revenue. Our internet, cell phone, electric, and water bills are all current liabilities since we have to pay for them on a monthly basis.
Long-term liabilities are not due within the current year or operating cycle. This includes notes payable (similar to accounts receivable except it has a maturity date over an entire year) and mortgages. For example, if you buy a car, you usually have to sign up for several years of car payments (assuming you don't purchase the car at once). This can be thought of as a long-term liability.
Current ratio and debt ratios are discussed last.

She discovered the Severson Entrepreneurship Academy in her first year and stayed engaged through all four years. She helped establish the Beaver Brew Café, a coffee shop created and run by students, that serves as a learning lab for running a business.

A special CBI (Central Bureau of Investigation) court in Hyderabad on Thursday found Satyam Computers former chairman B Ramalinga Raju and nine others guilty in the multi-crore scam.
The court announced a 7-year prison term and a fine of Rs 5 crores for Raju.
Raju and other nine were convicted under different sections of the Indian Penal Code (IPC), including 120B (criminal conspiracy), 409 (criminal breach of trust), 420 (cheating), 471(using forged records as real) and 477-A (distortion of records).

Equity is the owner's residual claim against the assets of the company. It includes contributed capital, retained earnings, and accumulated other comprehensive income. It is known as Stockholder's Equity in a corporation. Stockholder's equity consists of three major components: contributed or paid in capital, accumulated other comprehensive income, and retained earnings. The owner's claim on the resources increase and decrease as the company engages in operating activities. Contributed or paid in capital includes the common stock sold by the entity at face or par value and amounts received above par value called additional paid-in capital or paid-in capital in excess of par (denoted APIC). Retained earnings represent the historical record of earnings (losses) that have not been paid out or distributed as dividends to shareholders. Retained earnings consist of three items: revenues, expenses, and dividends. As the company earns revenue, assets increase and the shareholder claims against the assets of the company will increase. Conversely, as the company incurs expenses, shareholders claims against the assets of the company will decrease. The other events that can change the company's claim against the assets of the company is the amount of resources that shareholders invest in the company (via common stock) and the amount of resources that the owners take out of the company Revenues are economic resources that have been earned by delivering products or services to external customers. Revenues are the gross increase in stockholders' equity resulting from business activities entered into for the purpose of earning income. Revenues are asset inflows, or reduction of liabilities, resulting from the normal operations of the business. Gains, on the other hand, while they are asset inflows, or reduction of liabilities, they are from peripheral or nonoperating activities. Expenses are the costs associated with selling goods or services to external customers. Expenses are the cost of assets consumed or services used in the process of earning revenue. Expenses are asset outflows, or increases of liabilities, resulting from the normal operations of the business. Losses are asset outflows, or increases of liabilities, resulting from peripheral or nonoperating activities. Dividends are distributions of cash or other assets to stockholders; dividends reduce retained earnings. Dividends are NOT expenses in the determination of net income but are distributions of net income. The amount of the annual withdrawals (dividends) is usually limited by the business to prevent an owner from taking out more resources in a given period than the company can sustain. A transaction is a special kind of historical event. A transaction must involve the exchange of economic resources, and we must be able to measure the economic impact in monetary units. Buying a copying machine for the office would be considered a transaction, whilst simply meeting with a potential customer would not qualify as a transaction. Each transaction must have a dual effect on the accounting equation so that the equality of the equation is preserved. This is commonly known as double entry bookkeeping or the double entry system. For example, if an individual asset is increased, there must be a corresponding decrease in another asset, an increase in a specific liability, or an increase in stockholder's equity. There are four financial statements. They are the Income Statement, Statement of Retained Earnings, Balance Sheet, and Statement of Cash Flows. They are used by all companies as the primary means of communicating to external stakeholders. The income statement includes temporary accounts reflecting completed accounting cycles. The model of the income statement is simply revenues (gains, asset inflows, reduction in liabilities / obligations) minus expenses (losses, asset outflows, or an increase in liabilities / obligations) equals net income (listed on the bottom of the statement). Financial Accounting: Completing the Accounting Cycle (Closing Entries)
Introduction to Financial Accounting Completing the Accounting Cycle (Chapter 4) February 20th, 2013 by Professor Victoria Chiu The lecture begins with an overview of the accounting cycle. We start with the beginning account balances and analyze / journalize transactions as they happen, posting them to T-accounts. We also enter the trial balance and complete the worksheet and use it to prepare the financial statements. Lastly, we journalize closing entries before preparing the post-closing trial balance. The closing of accounts occurs at the end of every period. In this process, we zero out revenue, expenses, and dividends accounts - essentially, we close out all temporary accounts. Note that the term "zero-ing" out does NOT mean we make the accounts equal to zero. Rather, we transfer their balances to retained earnings. It gets our accounts ready for the next period, updating retained earnings to the proper ending balance (since it wasn't up to date until then). Temporary accounts are closed at the end of the period (revenues, expenses, dividends) and begins the next period with a zero-balance. Permanent accounts are not closed at the end of the period (assets, liabilities, common stock, retained earnings), and the ending balance transfers over to the next period. The closing process consists of four steps: (1) Close revenues (debit) to income summary (credit). (2) Close expenses (credit) to income summary (debit). (3) Close income summary (debit) to retained earnings (credit). (4) Close dividends (credit) into retained earnings (debit). The income summary account is best thought of as a temporary "holding tank" (opened and used solely for the closing of accounts) that shows the amount of net income / loss of the current period. Its balance is then transferred (closed) into the retained earnings account. The post-closing trial balance is an optional step in the accounting cycle. It lists permanent accounts (no temporary accounts) after posting closing entries, no temporary accounts. It has the same accounts as those on the balance sheet. Liquidity measures how quickly an asset can be turned into cash. Assets and liabilities are classified as either current or long-term to show their relative liquidity. The classified balance sheet lists assets based on their liquidity. For example, cash would be the most liquid since it is already cash. Accounts receivable would probably be the second most liquid item (sometimes considered a cash equivalent) since in many occasions, the money they are owed can be quickly collected. Current assets will be converted into cash, sold, or used within the next 12 months (although in some cases, the business cycle for a given company may be longer than a year). Current assets would include cash, accounts receivable, supplies, prepaid expenses, and inventory. Long-term assets can be used for more than a year and will not be converted to cash within the current year (or business cycle). This includes accounts such as land, building, furniture, equipment, and long-term investments. It should also be noted that accumulated depreciation is a long-term asset account as well given it represents the value that has been used up from plant assets (there is usually an accumulated depreciation account for each plant asset). Current liabilities must be paid with cash (or cash equivalents / goods) within an operating cycle. This includes accounts payable, notes payable, salary payable, interest payable, and unearned revenue. Our internet, cell phone, electric, and water bills are all current liabilities since we have to pay for them on a monthly basis. Long-term liabilities are not due within the current year or operating cycle. This includes notes payable (similar to accounts receivable except it has a maturity date over an entire year) and mortgages. For example, if you buy a car, you usually have to sign up for several years of car payments (assuming you don't purchase the car at once). This can be thought of as a long-term liability.
