Found on the North Wessex Downs and with a population of around 13,000 is the market town of Calne. It was first mentioned in the 10th century and it was once a major area which processed pig meat.
Calne has a small shopping area as well as an annual festival. Having been running for nearly forty years, the Calne Music and Arts Festival is very popular and attracts huge crowds every year.
Many attractions are in Calne. From historic houses and ancient habitations which date back to the Neolithic age, Calne also has the Cherhill White Horse which was first cut into stone in the 18th century. Although its railway station no longer exists, Calne is close to the A3102 road which can take travellers to Swindon. Therefore, experiencing many of Calne's attractions is very easy.
