Hello all, and here is the long awaited update 5. This update is about the track plans I've been creating with SCARM, great bit of software based on CAD but it has taking a while for me to learn enough to create something as basic as this. A look over some of the stunning scale model train exhibitions at St Luke's 28th Model Railway show. This time around I was trying to get "Hand Of God" shots as the model railway exhibitors fixed trains after de-railing of crashing. I forgot to pick up the show's info sheet but luckily I found an online draft version. 2. Half Pint Creek, Chris Fraser This is a freelance American outline switching layout in HO scale. It depicts the rather run down Lostan Foundry and is set in rugged terrain on the west coast. All the buildings are scratch built from cardboard and bits from the junk box. 3. Class 38 Pacific Meccano Loco No. 3830, John Thompson This model of the well known class 38 pacific loco of the NSWGR was first built in between 1953 and 1955. It was completely rebuilt in 2003 and every part was overhauled. 5. Electric Car Sheds, Historic Electric Traction This HO scale New South Wales model is based on the now demolished Punchbowl car sheds in Sydney. It showcases the single deck suburban trains commonly remembered as the Red Rattlers. 6. Midway, Ian Williamson This model of a small city is of no particular place and features the CBD and the very efficient tram service from the suburbs. Most of the buildings are by Tomix and Tomy and the trams are from the same makers. 7. Bushtown, Georges River Model Railway Club An N Scale Australian layout that features NSW and Victorian trains and represents a typical branch line in the South West Slopes and Snowy mountains area. The buildings are models of actual structures in NSW. It is DCC controlled using the NCE Powerhouse system. 8. Kidzpower, North Shore Railway Modellers This layout has been developed by the junior modellers and was started in 2013. It had the Bachmann Thomas The Tank tearing up the tracks. 9. Bridport South Western, Peter Betts This unique 4mm scale layout features both standard (18mm) and broad gauge (28mm) tracks. It is set in 1890 and features complicated handmade mixed gauge trackwork that is shared by trains from the London and South Western and Great Western railways. The locomotives and 90% of the rolling stock are scratch built and some are more than 50 years old. There are also many working mechanical devices that add interest to operations. The layout is operated in sync with the recorded commentary. 10. Umatilla Valley Railroad, Milton Brown The Umatilla River Valley and Columbia Plateau are in Western USA. The N Scale Umatilla Valley Railroad is a fictitious short line that connects with the mighty Union pacific Railroad. The model is set in 1950/60’s and features stock from all over western and central USA. 12. Defty, St Luke’s Model Railway Club This is the club’s HO scale modular layout. It allows members to run long trains that may not fit on their smaller home layouts. Despite its size it packs away into a cupboard when not in use. This year it features a mix of Australian, American and British trains. Rob Evans will also be running his OO scale live steamers at regular intervals. As always the Hornby Live Steam did not disappoint. 14. Audreyville, Rob Evans The layout was conceived as a portable layout to take when visiting my granddaughter (who loves Thomas and friends). It unfolds and is designed to be used on the floor with the child able to crawl over it when playing. The buildings are relocatable and all items have been pre-loved. Audrey loves it. Now whats weird is I thought it related to Reverend W. Awdry, creator of Thomas The Tank Engine And Friend. 15. Penguins Halt, Jenny Evans This layout is the “U-Drive” It has an animal theme and has been designed to be fun to watch. Children are welcome to try their hand at driving the trains. 16. Appletree Vale, John Byrne and Lachlan This HO layout was built by the late Peter Legatt of Asquith Model railways and was developed by one of St Lukes junior modelers with assistance from his grandfather. It is a good example of the next step from a basic train set. 17. Thomas Big Loader TOMY, Rick Lovelock This layout is made up of three modules. The train lift scoop and crane are all driven by a single motor unit powered by 1 AA battery. See what Thomas and his friends get up to! 18. Pangbourne Ridge, Rick Lovelock This scenic layout was built by the late Lindsay Dousha and features a narrow gauge – HOe scale logging operation in the steam to diesel transition period. 19. JB Mining, John Bell This freelance layout in Hoe scale features a mine, quarry, crushing plant and cement works. The quarry is reaching the end of its working life and nature is starting to take over again. The local passenger train still runs for workers and tourists. The track winds its way through narrow gorges and tunnels with limited clearance keeping the locos and stock small. In Consolations, de Botton attempts to console the reader through everyday problems (or at least help them to understand them) by extensively quoting and interpreting a number of philosophers. These are categorised in a number of chapters with one philosopher used in each. Consolation for Unpopularity (Socrates) Consolation for Not Having Enough Money (Epicurus) Consolation for Frustration (Seneca) Consolation for Inadequacy (Montaigne) Consolation for a Broken Heart (Schopenhauer) Consolation for Difficulties (Nietzsche) The critical reception for Consolations has been primarily positive. It received glowing praise in, among other publications, The New York Review of Books, The Times, The Spectator, The Sunday Telegraph, The Sunday Times, The Irish Times, The Literary Review, and The Mail on Sunday.[1] A few critics have been negative. Edward Skidelsky of the New Statesman wrote: "Comforting, but meaningless. In seeking to popularise philosophy, Alain de Botton has merely trivialised it, smoothing the discipline into a series of silly sound bites. ... [De Botton's The Consolations of Philosophy] is bad because the conception of philosophy that it promotes is a decadent one, and can only mislead readers as to the true nature of the discipline."[2] Jonathan Lear, writing in the New York Times said: "Academic philosophy in the United States has virtually abandoned the attempt to speak to the culture at large, but philosophy professors are doing something of incredible importance: they are trying to get things right. That is the thread that connects them back to Socrates -- even if they are not willing to follow him into the marketplace -- and that is the thread that The Consolations of Philosophy cuts. ...[L]et's face it, this isn't philosophy."[3] Mary Margaret McCabe stated in the Times Literary Supplement: "In the culture of the market economy, we miss the fact that philosophy is valuable in and by itself.... It is deeply dispiriting, then, that the latest attempt to popularize philosophy [De Botton's The Consolations of Philosophy] - that is to say, to make philosophy into televisual fodder - does so precisely on the basis that philosophers can provide us with useful tips.... This is not the dumbing down of philosophy, it is a dumbing out. Nothing in this travesty deserves its title; Boethius must be turning in his grave." The book was the inspiration for the Channel 4 TV series Philosophy: A Guide To Happiness. The series was produced mirroring the book's layout with the following six episodes: Socrates on Self-Confidence Epicurus on Happiness Seneca on Anger Montaigne on Self-Esteem Schopenhauer on Love Nietzsche on Hardship http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Consolations_of_Philosophy Michel Eyquem de Montaigne (/mɒnˈteɪn/;[3] French: [miʃɛl ekɛm də mɔ̃tɛɲ]; 28 February 1533 – 13 September 1592) was one of the most influential philosophers of the French Renaissance, known for popularizing the essay as a literary genre. He became famous for his effortless ability to merge serious intellectual exercises with casual anecdotes[4] and autobiography—and his massive volume Essais (translated literally as "Attempts" or "Trials") contains, to this day, some of the most influential essays ever written. Montaigne had a direct influence on writers all over the world, including René Descartes,[5] Blaise Pascal, Jean-Jacques Rousseau, Albert Hirschman, William Hazlitt,[6] Ralph Waldo Emerson, Friedrich Nietzsche, Stefan Zweig, Eric Hoffer,[7] Isaac Asimov, and possibly on the later works of William Shakespeare. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Michel_de_Montaigne Arthur Schopenhauer (German: [ˈaʁtʊʁ ˈʃɔpənˌhaʊ̯ɐ]; 22 February 1788 – 21 September 1860) was a German philosopher best known for his book, The World as Will and Representation (German: Die Welt als Wille und Vorstellung), in which he claimed that our world is driven by a continually dissatisfied will, continually seeking satisfaction. Influenced by Eastern philosophy, he maintained that the "truth was recognized by the sages of India";[2] consequently, his solutions to suffering were similar to those of Vedantic and Buddhist thinkers (e.g., asceticism). The influence of "transcendental ideality"[3] led him to choose atheism.[4][5][6][7] At age 25, he published his doctoral dissertation, On the Fourfold Root of the Principle of Sufficient Reason, which examined the four distinct aspects[8] of experience in the phenomenal world; consequently, he has been influential in the history of phenomenology. He has influenced many thinkers, including Friedrich Nietzsche,[9] Richard Wagner, Ludwig Wittgenstein, Erwin Schrödinger, Albert Einstein,[10] Sigmund Freud, Otto Rank, Carl Jung, Joseph Campbell, Leo Tolstoy, Thomas Mann, and Jorge Luis Borges, among others. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Arthur_Schopenhauer

The Times of India 2015-04-19Wikipedia (i/ˌwɪkɨˈpiːdiə/ or i/ˌwɪkiˈpiːdiə/ WIK-i-PEE-dee-ə) is a free, collaboratively edited and multilingual Internet encyclopedia supported by the non-profit Wikimedia Foundation. Its 22 million articles (over 0 million in English alone) have been written collaboratively by volunteers around the world. Almost all of its articles can be edited by anyone with access to the site, and it has about 100,000 regularly active contributors. As of June 2012, there are editions of Wikipedia in 285 languages. It has become the largest and most popular general reference work on the Internet, ranking sixth globally among all websites on Alexa and having an estimated 365 million readers worldwide. It is estimated that Wikipedia receives 2.7 billion monthly pageviews from the United States alone.
Wikipedia was launched in January 2001 by Jimmy Wales and Larry Sanger. Sanger coined the name Wikipedia, which is a portmanteau of wiki (a type of collaborative website, from the Hawaiian word wiki, meaning "quick") and encyclopedia. Wikipedia's departure from the expert-driven style of encyclopedia building and the presence of a large body of unacademic content have received extensive attention in print media. In its 2006 Person of the Year article, Time magazine recognized the rapid growth of online collaboration and interaction by millions of people around the world. It cited Wikipedia as an example, in addition to YouTube, MySpace, and Facebook. Wikipedia has also been praised as a news source because of how quickly articles about recent events appear. Students have been assigned to write Wikipedia articles as an exercise in clearly and succinctly explaining difficult concepts to an uninitiated audience.

Jimmy Donal "Jimbo" Wales ( /ˈdoʊnəl ˈweɪlz/; born August 7, 1966) is an American Internet entrepreneur best known as a co-founder and promoter of the online non-profit encyclopedia Wikipedia and the Wikia company. Wales was born in Huntsville, Alabama, United States, where he attended Randolph School, a university-preparatory school, then earned bachelor’s and master’s degrees in finance. While in graduate school, he taught at two universities, but left before completing a PhD in order to take a job in finance and later worked as the research director of a Chicago futures and options firm. In 1996, he and two partners founded Bomis, a male-oriented web portal featuring entertainment and adult content. The company would provide the initial funding for the peer-reviewed free encyclopedia Nupedia (2000–2003) and its successor, Wikipedia.
On January 15, 2001, with Larry Sanger and others, Wales launched Wikipedia, a free, open content encyclopedia that enjoyed rapid growth and popularity, and as Wikipedia’s public profile grew, he became the project’s promoter and spokesman. He is historically cited as a co-founder of Wikipedia, though he has disputed the "co-" designation, declaring himself the sole founder. Wales serves on the Board of Trustees of the Wikimedia Foundation, the non-profit charitable organization he helped establish to operate Wikipedia, holding its board-appointed "community founder" seat. In 2004, he co-founded Wikia, a for-profit wiki-hosting service. His role in creating Wikipedia, which has become the world’s largest encyclopedia, prompted Time magazine to name him in its 2006 list of the world’s most influential people.
