The National Higher Education Entrance Examination (also translated as National Matriculation Examination or National College Entrance Examination or "NCEE"), commonly known as Gaokao (高考, "Higher Education Exam", Pinyin gāo kǎo, lit. "High test"), is an academic examination held annually in People's Republic of China. This examination is a prerequisite for entrance into almost all higher education institutions at the undergraduate level. It is usually taken by students in their last year of senior high school, although there has been no age restriction since 2001.
The exams last about 9 hours, depends on the Chinese provinces, over a period of 2 days. Chinese literature, Mathematics, and English language (in most provinces) are required for all students. Students choose either one of two academic areas, Humanities (文綜)or Natural Sciences (理綜).
In 2006, a record high of 9.5 million people applied for tertiary education entry in China. Of these, 8.8 million (93%) are scheduled to take the national entrance exam and 27,600 (0.28%) have been exempted from standardized exams (保送) due to exceptional or special talent. Everyone else (700,000 students) will take other standardized entrance exams, such as those designed for adult education students.

I'm not so great at taking tests but in this video I tried taking the English portion of the Jiangsu Province Gao Kao (college entrance) exam. You'd think that since I'm a native English speaker I'd get a perfect score, but...
There’s a trend that increasing numbers of Chinese high school students choose to pass on college entrance exams in China and apply to universities abroad instead. Is it because Chinese parents are getting wealthier and can afford to foot the bill for extended stays abroad or are there other reasons behind it? Gaokao - The National College Entrance Exam of China my
While many true stories about this grueling but crucial and one and only college entrance exam in china, Gao Kao also has inconvenient advantages.
I see a knight - a wandering fool
A man of few words
Doesn’t play by the rules of deceit
I see a knight - courageous and cool
A master of swords
One who never surrenders, and knows no defeat
Now their ship’s setting sail
To the Castle of Sadness
Will their quest for the Grail
Lead to glory or madness
Will their search ever end
Are they lost in this secret land
Where nothing is real
One is judged by his deeds
Based on moral perfection
One is found too discrete
For not asking the questions
So their search never ends
They are lost in these secret lands
Where nothing is real
They can see it, almost touch it
But their eyes will be blinded by the light
Lacking courage, lacking virtue, lacking wisdom
Just found in the purest of knights
I see a knight - his journey begins
He comes from afar
And where others have failed he’ll succeed
I see a knight - free of all sins
His goodness of heart will earn him his place on the
Perilous Seat
In his barren domain
Waits a king for the right one
Plagued by terrible pains
That won’t stop ’till the knight comes
Whose compassion is real
Then his wounds will be healed at last
All misery’s passed
He can see it, he can touch it
And his eyes won’t be blinded by the light
Only courage, only virtue, only wisdom
Combined in the purest of knights
I see a knight
I see a knight
