Christopher Isett: New evidence of the great divergence of China and Europe
Historian Christopher Isett aims to answer a big historical debate about world development: "Why, given all the advances, China did not arrive at the industrial revolution or Modern Capitalism? Why that originated in Europe?" In order to answer the question, Dr. Isett uses the height records of wrongful death victims to estimate the average height of the people before the 1900s in China. The average changes of height of a population are an important index for historians to understand the changes of nutrition levels and the stability of the society (the degree of diseases, famine, or other disasters). Dr. Isett found that in 18th century, the average height of Chinese people stagnated, which reflects the stagnation of people's income level. The research team will extend the search into the 19th centaury to research the process of "The Great Divergence." The results will provide new evidence and could alter the arguments of the well-known historian Kenneth Pomaranze. - published: 19 Aug 2013

GEM13: Robert Boyd on the First Great Divergence
Economists refer to the Great Divergence as the growth occurred in Europe and North America over the past several hundred years. But, at the 2013 Global Empowerment Meeting, Robert Boyd examines the First Great Divergence - where the human species diverged from other animals. Both examples are driven by the same factors: the cultural accumulation of productive knowledge in populations. Great divergence - the economic growth in Europe and North America View slides: http://www.hks.harvard.edu/var/ezp_site/storage/fckeditor/file/pdfs/centers-programs/centers/cid/news_and_events/recent-conferences/GEM2013/Boyd_Divergence_GEM13.pdf For more on the Global Empowerment Meeting, visit http://www.hks.harvard.edu/centers/cid/news-events/recent-conferences/gem/agenda- published: 12 Nov 2013

Harper Lecture with Kenneth Pomeranz: Unique Patterns of Chinese Economic Development
Among the most striking features of late imperial China (ca. 1400-1912) was the fact that, though it had a highly commercialized society, most peasants continued to have very strong claims to their land, and only a very small share of the population became dependent on earning wages. In this talk, Professor Pomeranz will analyze several reasons for this pattern of development and trace the long-term consequences of the system that resulted from it, showing that it created a distinct political economy that produced considerable agricultural and commercial dynamism--but not industrialization. Pomeranz will further argue that the impact of these economic patterns continues even in today's era of post-Mao reform. Kenneth Pomeranz is University Professor in the Department of History and the College at the University of Chicago and the current president of the American Historical Association. His publications include The Great Divergence: China, Europe, and the Making of the Modern World Economy, and The Making of a Hinterland: State, Society and Economy in Inland North China, 1853-1937, as well as several coauthored, edited, and coedited volumes. He is a fellow of the American Academy of Arts and Sciences and has received fellowships from the Guggenheim Foundation, the American Philosophical Society, the American Council of Learned Societies, the Institute for Advanced Studies, and the National Endowment for the Humanities, among others.- published: 18 Dec 2013

Simplified Divergence as a Leading Technical Indicator
Simplified Divergence as a Leading Technical Indicator
This video is just a 10 minute excerpt of the recorded webinar. To view the webinar in its entirety, please visit http://bit.ly/1eV1ujr There's a word missing from the vernacular in mainstream trading circles - "divergence". Despite its hush-hush reputation, traders who already use divergence in their trading often consider it one of the leading indicators out there; a front-runner in a sea of technical analyses. Why is divergence so seldom used if it is so powerful? According to Tony Peterson of the Intentional Trader, it's because divergence has historically been very difficult to understand and to read on a trading chart using traditional methods. Well, no more! Join Tony for this insightful webinar, in which he will review why divergence is so powerful and how to recognize this leading technical analysis indicator without any effort on your part. Specific topics to be addressed include: Why knowing and understanding divergence can help to fine-tune your current trading system, as well as how you can develop an entire trading system around divergence (yes, it is that powerful!). How to spot and bypass the several different parameters of divergence that can cause confusion and potential hesitation. How to not overlook great divergence trade opportunities simply because you didn't know what to look for, or just plain missed it. Tony Peterson was introduced to day trading in 2000 and, after 7 years of struggling, he retooled his trading approach with a focus on his mental attitude. Tony created an informal trading room as his real life experiences had prepared him to understand what other traders were going through. This trading room continued to grow leading Tony to found The Intentional Trader where he created a TradeRx Trading Skills Development Program. Currently, Tony spends his days moderating, teaching, and trading in his trade room as well as mentoring TradeRx participants and developing new indicators for NinjaTrader 7.- published: 25 Feb 2014
