Fantastic performance footage of one of Jazz's greatest stars - Duke Ellington. With performances of song of his most famous songs including "Mood Indigo", "Caravan" & "Sophisticated Lady" Edward Kennedy "Duke" Ellington was an American composer, pianist, and big-band leader. Ellington wrote over 1,000 compositions. A major figure in the history of jazz, Ellington's music stretched into various other genres. His career spanned more than 50 years and included leading his orchestra, composing an inexhaustible songbook, scoring for movies, composing stage musicals, and world tours. Several of his instrumental works were adapted into songs that became standards. Due to his inventive use of the orchestra, or big band, and thanks to his eloquence and extraordinary charisma, he is generally considered to have elevated the perception of jazz to an art form on a par with other traditional genres of music. His reputation increased after his death and the Pulitzer Prize Board bestowed on him a special posthumous honor in 1999. Ellington called his music "American Music" rather than jazz, and liked to describe those who impressed him as "beyond category." 1. Sophisticated Lady 2. Caravan 3. The Mooch 4. V.I.P's Boogie 5. Ellington at Newport is a 1956 live jazz album by Duke Ellington and his band of their 1956 concert at the Newport Jazz Festival. Jazz promoter George Wein describes the 1956 concert as "the greatest performance of [Ellington's] career... It stood for everything that jazz had been and could be."

This is a portion of a documentary project I produced while a grad student at UCLA back around 1974 called "Reminiscing In Tempo". I was fortunate to interview many of the great musicians who had played with Duke Ellington's band over the years, among them the great drummer Louie Bellson. The interview segment is followed by a small group version of "Cottontail" featuring Duke Ellington on piano, Joe Pass on guitar, Ray Brown on bass, and Louie Bellson on drums.

Although it is billed as a Duke Ellington and Johnny Hodges album, Side by Side is a 1959 album mostly under the leadership of Johnny Hodges, Duke Ellington's alto saxophonist for many years. Ellington only appears on three of this album's tracks. The album places Hodges at the fore, backing him with piano by Ellington or Billy Strayhorn and providing other accompaniment by well-known jazz figures like Ben Webster, Roy Eldridge, Harry "Sweets" Edison and Jo Jones. The album, a follow-up to the popular Back to Back: Duke Ellington and Johnny Hodges Play the Blues, has remained perpetually in print. Track Listing: 1. "Stompy Jones" (Duke Ellington) 2. "Just Squeeze Me" (Fats Waller, Clarence Williams) 3. "Big Shoe" (Jimmy Hamilton) 4. "Going Up" (D. Ellington) 5. "Just a Memory" (Lew Brown, Buddy DeSylva, Ray Henderson) 6. "Let's Fall in Love" (Harold Arlen, Ted Koehler) 7. "Ruint" (Mercer Ellington, Johnny Hodges) 8. "Bend One" (Hodges) 9. "You Need to Rock" (Hodges) (C) 1959 Verve Jazz

The concluding part of an excellent documentary on Duke Ellington, broadcast on 10 May 1994 at 22.55 as part of BBC One's Omnibus arts strand. Co-written (with Geoffrey C. Ward), produced and directed by Robert S. Levi, this second part of the documentary focuses on Ellington's career from the exceptional 'Blanton Webster' band of the early 1940s up to Ellington's death in 1974. The documentary addresses the highs and lows of Ellington's life and work during these years - taking in the critical response to Black, Brown and Beige, the decline of the Ellington band's fortunes in the late 1940s and early 1950s, Ellington's legendary 'comeback' concert at the 1956 Newport Jazz Festival and Ellington's relationship with the civil rights movement and Martin Luther King, Jr. Contributors include Louie Bellson, Mercer Ellington, Mercedes Ellington, Herb Jeffries, Sid Kuller, Marion Logan, Albert Murray, Gunther Schuller, Bob Udkoff, Barry Ulanov and George Wein. The picture quality is variable alas due to the age of the recording.

The Los Angeles Police Department (LAPD) is the police department of the city of Los Angeles, California. The LAPD has been copiously fictionalized in numerous movies, novels and television shows throughout its history. The department has also been associated with a number of controversies, mainly concerned with racial animosity, police brutality and police corruption. The radio show Calling All Cars hired LAPD radio dispacher Jesse Rosenquist to be the voice of the dispatcher. Rosenquist was already famous because home radios could tune into early police radio frequencies. As the first police radio dispatcher presented to the public ear, his was the voice that actors went to when called upon for a radio dispatcher role. The iconic television series Dragnet, with LAPD Detective Joe Friday as the primary character, was the first major media representation of the department. Real LAPD operations inspired Jack Webb to create the series and close cooperation with department officers let him make it as realistic as possible, including authentic police equipment and sound recording on-site at the police station. Due to Dragnet's popularity, LAPD Chief Parker "became, after J. Edgar Hoover, the most well known and respected law enforcement official in the nation". In the 1960s, when the LAPD under Chief Thomas Reddin expanded its community relations division and began efforts to reach out to the African-American community, Dragnet followed suit with more emphasis on internal affairs and community policing than solving crimes, the show's previous mainstay. Several prominent representations of the LAPD and its officers in television and film include Adam-12, Blue Streak, Blue Thunder, Boomtown, The Closer, Colors, Crash, Columbo, Dark Blue, Die Hard, End of Watch, Heat, Hollywood Homicide, Hunter, Internal Affairs, Jackie Brown, L.A. Confidential, Lakeview Terrace, Law & Order: Los Angeles, Life, Numb3rs, The Shield, Southland, Speed, Street Kings, SWAT, Training Day and the Lethal Weapon, Rush Hour and Terminator film series. The LAPD is also featured in the video games Midnight Club II, Midnight Club: Los Angeles, L.A. Noire and Call of Juarez: The Cartel. The LAPD has also been the subject of numerous novels. Elizabeth Linington used the department as her backdrop in three different series written under three different names, perhaps the most popular being those novel featuring Det. Lt. Luis Mendoza, who was introduced in the Edgar-nominated Case Pending. Joseph Wambaugh, the son of a Pittsburgh policeman, spent fourteen years in the department, using his background to write novels with authentic fictional depictions of life in the LAPD. Wambaugh also created the Emmy-winning TV anthology series Police Story. Wambaugh was also a major influence on James Ellroy, who wrote several novels about the Department set during the 1940s and 1950s, the most famous of which are probably The Black Dahlia, fictionalizing the LAPD's most famous "cold case", and L.A. Confidential, which was made into a film of the same name. Both the novel and the film chronicled mass-murder and corruption inside and outside the force during the Parker era. Critic Roger Ebert indicates that the film's characters (from the 1950s) "represent the choices ahead for the LAPD": assisting Hollywood limelight, aggressive policing with relaxed ethics, and a "straight arrow" approach. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/LAPD

The Woods is the seventh and final studio album by the indie rock trio Sleater-Kinney. Released in 2005, the album was released to widespread critical acclaim. The album was produced by Dave Fridmann, whose earlier work includes collaborations with The Flaming Lips and Mercury Rev. It represents a stylistic shift from their previous releases, fusing elements of album-oriented rock with the band's more characteristic punk rock sound, while continuing lyrical themes such as consumerism and personal relationships. Rolling Stone placed The Woods at number 70 on its list of top 100 albums of the 2000s. Track listing: 1.The Fox - 0:00 2.Wilderness - 3:25 3.What's Mine Is Yours - 7:05 4.Jumpers - 12:03 5.Modern Girl - 16:29 6.Entertain - 19:42 7.Rollercoaster - 24:38 8.Steep Air - 29:30 9.Let's Call It Love - 33:35 10.Night Light - 44:37 NOTE: When I originally made this vid for YT I accidentally utilized another version of Modern Girl that was already on my 'puter. Dawn 2015-04-05Edward Kennedy "Duke" Ellington (April 29, 1899 – May 24, 1974) was an American composer, pianist, and big-band leader. Ellington wrote over 1,000 compositions. In the opinion of Bob Blumenthal of The Boston Globe "In the century since his birth, there has been no greater composer, American or otherwise, than Edward Kennedy Ellington." A major figure in the history of jazz, Ellington's music stretched into various other genres, including blues, gospel, film scores, popular, and classical.
