Many exhibitions have been held in the vast spaces of US National Guard armories, but the Armory Show refers to the 1913 International Exhibition of Modern Art that was organized by the Association of American Painters and Sculptors. The exhibition ran in New York City's 69th Regiment Armory, on Lexington Avenue between 25th and 26th Streets, from February 17 until March 15, and became an important event in the history of American art, introducing astonished New Yorkers, accustomed to realistic art, to modern art. The show served as a catalyst for American artists, who became more independent and created their own "artistic language".
The Armory Show was the first exhibition mounted by the Association of American Painters and Sculptors and was run by their president, Arthur B. Davies, secretary Walt Kuhn, and Walter Pach. It displayed some 1,300 paintings, sculptures, and decorative works by over 300 avant-garde European and American artists. Impressionist, Fauvist, and Cubist works were represented.
Duke Riley is an American artist.
Riley earned a BFA in painting form the Rhode Island School of Design, and a MFA in Sculpture from the Pratt Institute. He lives in Brooklyn, New York. He is noted for a body of work incorporating the seafarer's craft with nautical history, as well as the host of a legendary series of illegal clambakes on the Brooklyn waterfront for the New York artistic community. Riley told the Village Voice that he has "always been interested in the space where water meets land in the urban landscape."
One of Riley's projects entailed a bar constructed from found objects in the concrete pilings that supported the humming Belt Parkway. Riley told a reporter for the New York Times that he charged for the drinks so that he was violating New York law by selling alcohol without a license as well as trespassing on federal property.
In 2007, Riley launched a replica of the Revolutionary War era Turtle, a small wooden submarine designed to enable American patriots to sink British Navy ships by attaching mines to the hulls. He and two companions who had helped him construct the wooden submarine were arrested by the New York City police when they came within 200 feet of the Queen Mary 2, without authorization, at New York City's Red Hook Brooklyn cruise ship terminal. Jesse Bushnell, one of the men arrested with Riley, is a descendant of David Bushnell, the inventor of the Turtle.
The Timothy Taylor Gallery is a modern and contemporary art gallery in Mayfair, London, owned and founded by Timothy Taylor. The gallery represents a variety of modern and contemporary artists, selling original and editioned artworks across many different media.
The gallery was founded in 1996 on Bruton Place and later moved to 24 Dering Street in 2003, expanding to include a second space at 21 Dering Street in 2006.
In October 2007, Timothy Taylor Gallery opened a new 2,000-square-foot (190 m2) space in Carlos Place, Mayfair, London, with an inaugural exhibition of Alex Katz’s works, entitled ‘One Flight Up’., The move allowed the gallery to exhibit a greater scope of works in a space designed by the acclaimed Eric Parry Architects.
Former senior curator of the Tate Modern, Emma Dexter, joined Timothy Taylor as director of exhibitions in 2007. Emma curated group shows including 'Ballet Mécanique' in 2007 and ‘Ventriloquist’ in 2009.,,
The gallery has produced over twenty publications, and shown over fifty exhibitions since its opening. Timothy Taylor Gallery also actively takes part in a number of art fairs worldwide, including the Frieze Art Fair, Art Basel Miami, and Art Basel.
If I could believe
If I only could see another way
I would sail away
On ship with things
From which to gaze
Across the waves
But I'm without you
Through the heartland
We can be brave again
Stand up you fool
Forevermore - forevermore
If I only could see
If I did not deceive your shelter
I would build bridges with a care
We could kiss forever there
But I'm without you ...
Get on get up off the floor
Here it comes now
Whenever I'm near you
Whenever I see you
I know that I need you
I know that I must go
If I shook a rock loud
And I shook the sea
And I shake the world about me
Would you know
To point me the way to go home
And I'll cry aloud
Sleep city sleep
Stood in a rain cloud
When I needed the rain
But ran to a shelter
Covered in shame
This is the easy time
The first and last river crossed
A happy time
Can you hear the voices
Calling - calling - calling
Go on - go on - go on keep moving
Its so easy to see why
He who will rise will fall again
I see your eyes
Castles In Spain
Push your way across
And did I feel uneasy here
You settled in
Can you hear ...
You're here and you know why
He who will ...
Can you hear ...
What can I do
You settled in
A happy time
On a merry go round
Going the wrong way
I can put it right bright
Nothing can hurt you
I will be there
No on will hurt you
It spins around in my head
Everything seemingly pushing us back again
She climbed so high
Forgot where she was going
No feeling could describe
The right way in which she's moving
Moving - moving again
The way in which she's moving
In a sense of freedom
Here we go round now a thunder
Just slipping away tonight
Where are we going
Climbing so high
Nothing can hurt you
We enjoy the day
We are soon to be
Step aside we're coming through
Step aside we call to you
A feeling
They came openly
They are here to stay
And I feel like a lion
Alive in a grave
I've got to do something
Or I'll always be safe
Step aside ...
Into you heart - watching it fade away
A feeling
Taking the chance you've waited for
This is the one we're asking for
A feeling
Into you heart watching it fade away
I will be released
I see you understanding
And this the sail away the give away
And I - I see you in the arms of November
We sail - we sail
On the glory of love
The boy is astray
And he's sailing away
On the glory
On the glory of love
I am as reflections
I recieve (sic) no injury
And when the days away the ships away
And I - I see you in the arms of December
We sail ...
And if we disappoint will circumstance
Destroy our new horizons
Babes in the wood
Crying for a city
Half of her smiles
Love feels as a fire
She went for me
A sound lullaby
Shes old money
Shes to grow
I just dont care anymore
Oh Catherine with your beautiful eyes
Oh Catherine with those waterboy cries
If I could be king
Of the world who smiles
Oh Catherine I'll tend you a fire
Burning down the bridges
This is summer - some are watching
Understanding the promises
That drift away - they drift away
Nothing to share in low water
Over above an avalanche she falls away
This summer - some are August
Crying far air not to be had
Is this the way is this this the way
More than enough move to the side
Watch him pass he passes by he gets away
If I could lose myself and dream away
Day upon day upon day upon day
In an avalanche she drifts away
Over its over its over its over
I wish we could be together again
Against the grain am I living again
In a ray of light
Waiting and waiting for the floods to come
Fire flies into my eyes
As I follow the sun
Where to now where will we go
Fa fa fa
And I believed you
But you deceived me
In an hour in a minute in a second I hope
The floods will come
Magnificent is disarray
Watch me tumbling down
Waiting and waiting for the floods to come
walk away fist in the air feet on the ground
Tell me oh tell me
Where is it to be this time
fa ...
The floods will not come
Judy In July - looking into the sky
Like a sail in the wind
She sails away into the boundary
Oh Oh Oh Kyrie awake me
Judy in July - through a golden eye
Can see over the fields
The hawk weave on through the boundary
Oh Oh Oh Kyrie awake me
See it through - Judy Oh Judy
Curious in the vale of tears I know
I love you anyway
Memory - at the feast of fools I know
I love you anyway
Will I remember you
Will I get you back
Judy in July - in anger calm and shy
Oh how she beats the floor
Timber it fell in the city
Falling and falling all over me
The pioneer calls - its up to me
Growing and showing how its to be
Running and running and running around
City so high its burning down
Boldly as a lion into the night
If I took your hand would you understand
Knowing you are for sale
In the Jungle Of Cities who can prevail
We followed the river
Over land never seen
Oh were is the - where is the sound
Under and over shes goes
Always forever
The innocence - the innocence of love
Came through a silence
Or was it relief
Oh were is the - where is the sound
Running away from it all
Always forever
Forever always at home
Farewell to farewell to
Your heart - your heart
The innocence - the innocence of love
Always the echo
Breaking the fall
Oh were is the - where is the sound
Put her foot down in her hope
Always forever
He lifted me a high
Higher than the world
Caught me running wild
Higher than the world
We fell on open ground
Feel it - can you feel it
The sun shone on my side
Run - run - runaway - run away
Oh promises of change
Higher than the world
Come silent as the shade
I'm higher than the world
And on it goes like a fire
