During the march protesters passed the prefecture building of the Pyrénées-Orientales, a French region which some refer to as ‘Northern Catalonia’ or ‘French Catalonia.’ Catalan is spoken in the region, and the Perpignan municipality promotes its use, however it has no legal status or standing. The protesters also organised a mock vote on land reform, a process which is currently being undertaken in the Spanish region of Catalonia. Surveys indicate that 83 percent of the population of the Pyrénées-Orientales would like Catalan to be taught in schools.
