Africans have been waiting for decades for the mains electricity which the rich world takes for granted. Sub-Saharan Africa’s 910m people consume less electricity each year than the 4.8m people of Alabama. Many more who are on the grid suffer brown-outs and dangerous surges in current. But a solar revolution is afoot. In 2009 just 1% of sub-Saharan Africans used solar lighting. Now it is nearly 5% or 11m people. The International Energy Agency, a Paris-based government think-tank, reckons that 500m more people will have solar electricity by 2030, Why is solar power spreading so fast in Africa? There are three main reasons. First, solar panel technology has improved. Efficiency gains and mass production mean that modern photovoltaic panels have plunged in price per watt – to around 30 cents. Second, low-energy bulbs have got better and cheaper. Modern solar lamps cost as little as $8—they charge by day and give light by night. They replace costly and dangerous alternatives - Africans waste $10 billion a year on kerosene. Even worse are candles, open fires—or darkness, which hurts productivity and encourages crime. The third, crucial development is in storage, as lamps are needed at night and solar power is collected in the daytime. Old nickel cadmium batteries wore out after 500 recharges; lithium-based ones can manage 2,000 and store much more electricity Additionally, solar power is increasingly well-financed in Africa. Aid donors are sponsoring more ambitious projects – specially designed fridges and televisions, for example. Bigger solar systems can run a school or clinic, a grain mill or irrigation pump, or even a whole village. Some dismiss solar as a second-best solution. But conventional, centralised electrical grids have proved unreliable and inefficient in the past -- and solar is much better than nothing.

Addressing the key design challenges involved in the development and implementation of these systems requires simulation tools capable of not only modeling and analyzing the behavior of diverse electronic components, but also the ability to combine them with the associated control algorithms and evaluate the full system performance. In this webinar, MathWorks engineers demonstrate how to use dynamic models to test and validate the performance of photovoltaic systems that include the PV arrays, the power converters and inverter electronics, and a variety of loading conditions, including a connection to the utility grid. The examples show how simulation can be used to perform design trade-offs and to develop and test control algorithms, including maximum power point tracking (MPPT).

I use a large fresnel lens to test the effect of concentrated sunlight on a solar cell. To keep the solar cell cool I immerse it in mineral oil. I measure the voltage, current and the temperature. But I also test it without the cooling and sure enough, the solar cell is destroyed by the concentrated sunlight. The fresnel lens is one I got from a rear projection TV. The proposed Project is fully in line with the 2014-2017 Country Partnership Strategy (CPS) for the Kingdom of Morocco. It will contribute to the development of the CPS results area 2.2 “increase renewable energy generation and enhance energy efficiency,” which is part of Morocco’s effort to reduce its dependence on fossil fuels, protection against excessive fluctuations of prices from fossil fuels, and the development of Morocco’s vast renewable energy resources. Morocco’s new strategy targets a renewable energy capacity of 41 percent by 2020. Morocco estimates that the Morocco Solar Plan, which is to deliver 2000 MW towards Morocco’s renewable energy target, will cost US $9 billion. The country is making resources available accordingly and has created a dedicated agency – MASEN – to implement the Moroccan Solar Plan. https://www.worldbank.org/projects/P131256?lang=en

I had a sunny day so I got to really test out my old forklift batteries on my tiny house solar power. I also had a special delivery today which I will tell cover in detail later. Since it was a bright, sunny winter day I was able to put the old forklift battery bank into manual equalize mode. My Tristar MPPT solar charge controller allows me to manually start an equalization. This means that the solar charge controller hits the battery bank with over 15 volts for a certain amount of time. This boils the acid in the battery cells and mixes the electrolyte up better. With time the heavier acid settles down and the lighter water rises. This creates an unbalanced chemistry in the battery and causes uneven distribution of power in the battery cell. Boiling the fluid in the battery with a higher voltage mixes the fluids better and also breaks up the lead sulfate on the battery plates. This brings the battery up closer to its full power capacity. While at Tractor Supply the other day I found a manual/automatic battery charger on sale. It was on clearance because it was stocked as a Christmas gift item. After the holidays they need to clear out old stock to prepare for new spring items. So I got an awesome deal on this charger. The battery charger has a 10 amp setting and can be set to manual mode which allows me to put 10 amps at 14.8 volts into my forklift batteries as long as I want. This allows me to run devices inside my tiny house on wheels when the sun is down even though the batteries are not running at full capacity. These old forklift batteries are badly sulfated. They were abused and I expect it will take a long time before they are performing well in my off grid solar application. But they are only temporary anyway until the reconditioned forklift battery arrives. Which, by the way, happened on this day. In the afternoon hours a van pulled in carrying my new/reconditioned forklift battery. This is a 3 year old 12 volt battery bank rated at 750 AH. And it comes with a one year warranty. This forklift battery will become the main power source for my tiny house when the sun is not generating power through the solar panels. I expect the new forklift battery to last me at least 20 years in my solar powered home. I used my harbor freight engine hoist to get the battery raised off the bed of the van while they drove it out from under the battery. Then I lowered it onto the ground for now. I have to fix my truck brakes before I can get the battery over to the tiny house. I plan to put the battery into the bed of the truck and then drive the truck over to the back side of the tiny house. Then lift the battery out with the HF engine hoist and lower it to the ground. Then I have to manipulate it into place on the pallet next to the other batteries. Is the fall in fossil-fuel prices killing the business case for renewables? The decline in fossil-fuel prices does have some effect, but remember that 78 percent of the economies of the U.S. have state-mandated renewable portfolio standards. They require that a specified fraction of electricity must come from renewable energy. For example, in California the goal is 33 percent renewable energy by 2020. Right now renewable electricity is roughly 13 percent of total electricity generated in the U.S. Half is hydropower and the other half is mostly wind energy, with some solar, biomass and geothermal. Renewable energy costs have come down significantly. Even if natural gas, which is the cheapest form of electricity generation today, stays at $4 per million Btus [British thermal units], wind without subsidy is almost as inexpensive. Electrical generation in the sunnier parts of the U.S. is also approaching equality with a new natural gas power plant. The cost of wind and solar is anticipated to decline for at least a decade or two. I set up solar a solar power system for my tiny house on wheels plus I have a helper working at the off grid homestead. I have a pair of solar batteries that I got out of the scrap yard a couple years ago which I am now using for my tiny house for now. This is a temporary setup until I have time to build a proper insulated battery box for my RV golf cart batteries. Then I will move the golf cart batteries over to the tiny house and swap them out with the solar batteries. I am using a harbor freight solar panel system for my tiny house for now. It is actually bringing in more power per day at only 45 watts than my entire 800 watt solar panel system for the RV. This is because the HF solar panels are amorphous and are producing power during cloudy and rainy days when the polycrystalline panels are not. I am also using the HF solar charge controller for now. I plan to use a better solar charge controller soon though. I cut a hole in the tiny house wall under the kitchen sink. I used a hole cutter to make the hole. This allows me to pass the wired into and out of the tiny house for the battery bank. A set of wires enters the tiny house between the solar panels and the charge controller. Another set of wires is connected between the batteries and the charge controller. Yet another pair of wires comes from the batteries back into the tiny home. This is the main power line for the tiny house. I have a helper who will be working on the souvenirs for The Off Grid Project since I have been too busy working on the house. Emre is a foreign student who is going go college locally. I am going to pay him per item made. He will be making The Off Grid Project coffee coasters and helping with various other souvenirs while I finish the tiny house. I finished connecting the solar power system to my tiny home and started to connect some LED lighting to the house. I am using my homemade paneling to hold the LED spotlights above the kitchen counter. A package arrived containing a tool belt and some saw blades. I do not know who sent it but thank you. Three celestial events will make for a rare triple event today. That's because a total solar eclipse and Super Moon occur during the 2015 Spring Equinox (also known as the Vernal Equinox) on Friday, March 20, 2015. The total solar eclipse occurs at 9:43 a.m. UTC but will only be viewable from the Faroe Islands, located northwest of Scotland, and the Svalbard Islands, located east of Greenland. Around the same time, a partial solar eclipse will be visible in surrounding regions of Europe, northern Africa and northern Asia. The eclipse will not be visible from anywhere in the U.S. A solar eclipse occurs when the moon passes between Earth and the sun, casting a shadow over Earth. The moon’s shadow masks the solar surface and blocks sunlight from reaching Earth directly – but the amount of sunlight blocked depends on location. For example, on March 20, those in Glasgow, Scotland, will see about 94-percent of the sun blocked by the moon. The unblocked sunlight will appear as a thumbnail sliver. In Paris, the moon will block about three-quarters of the sun at the time of maximum eclipse. Elsewhere there were reports of birds "going crazy" and flocking to trees, confused by the fading light. Skywatchers in Newquay, Cornwall, got a clear view of first contact as the moon cut across the Sun at 8.20am, shortly after observers in Spain saw the eclipse begin. As the spectacle began, astronomer Tom Kerss told Sky News: "You're seeing the Moon's rugged mountainous and valleyed surface starting to cut into the face of the Sun. That will just grow and cut more of the Sun away." First contact in London was visible at 8.47am, with a large crowd of enthusiasts choosing the Royal Observatory at Greenwich as the ideal spot to watch as the Sun was partially obscured. Members of the public and commuters who might have caught sight of the eclipse on the way to work had been warned that looking directly at the Sun could seriously damage their eyesight. Despite fears that cloud cover could ruin the event, there were good views in many areas, from the South West to London, Lincolnshire and the Isle of Lewis in Scotland. Some lucky observers in Britain got to experience the full extent of the event as the moon crossed in front of the sun, covering up to 97% of its face. It was most visible from the North Atlantic and Arctic Oceans, Greenland, Iceland, Ireland, United Kingdom, Faroe Islands, northern Norway and Murmansk Oblast. The shadow began its pass off the south coast of Greenland. The shadow then moved to the northeast, passing between Iceland and the United Kingdom before moving over the the Faroe Islands and the northernmost islands of Norway. The shadow of the eclipse was visible in varying degrees all over continental Europe. South eastern locations only experienced a partial solar eclipse.[3] For example, London will experience an 85% partial solar eclipse compared to north of the Faroe Islands in the Norweigian Sea which will see a complete solar eclipse.[4] Impact[edit] The European Union has about 90 Gigawatts of solar power and production may have been temporarily decreased by up to 34 GW of that dependent on the clarity of the sky. This was the first time that an eclipse had a significant impact on the power system, and the electricity sector took measures to mitigate the impact. The power gradient (change in power) may be −400 MW/minute and +700 MW/minute. Places in Netherlands, Belgium and Denmark may be 80% obscured.[5][6] Temperature may decrease by 3°C, and wind power may decrease as winds are reduced by 0.7 m/s.[7] The maximum phase of over 100% occurred over the Arctic Ocean with 102% over Barentsburg.

Solar power is the conversion of sunlight into electricity, either directly using photovoltaics (PV), or indirectly using concentrated solar power (CSP). Concentrated solar power systems use lenses or mirrors and tracking systems to focus a large area of sunlight into a small beam. Photovoltaics convert light into electric current using the photoelectric effect.
Commercial concentrated solar power plants were first developed in the 1980s. The 354 MW SEGS CSP installation is the largest solar power plant in the world, located in the Mojave Desert of California. Other large CSP plants include the Solnova Solar Power Station (150 MW) and the Andasol solar power station (150 MW), both in Spain. The 214 MW Charanka Solar Park in India, is the world’s largest photovoltaic plant.
Solar power is the conversion of sunlight into electricity. Sunlight can be converted directly into electricity using photovoltaics (PV), or indirectly with concentrated solar power (CSP), which normally focuses the sun's energy to boil water which is then used to provide power. Other technologies also exist, such as Stirling engine dishes which use a Stirling cycle engine to power a generator. Photovoltaics were initially used to power small and medium-sized applications, from the calculator powered by a single solar cell to off-grid homes powered by a photovoltaic array.
