He'd tinker and daydream and read through the day. "Go do something useful!" his father would say. Now, scientists then were already aware That electrical waves could be sent through the air. Which soon led his curious brain to inquire, Could messages somehow be sent without wire? So he took to his lab and succeeded quite well With a gadget that set off a faraway bell. He showed it to experts, who told him, "Dear boy, It won't work long-distance. It's only a toy!" Now, he could have just put it away on a shelf, But Marconi decided, "I'll see for myself!" It worked! And it transmitted farther each day! When he showed it in England, it blew them away! He built them a radio system for ships To stay in close contact on long ocean trips. He then built antennas so strong and gigantic, Their signals could travel across the Atlantic! He soon became rich and was known far and wide! "Ah, that's-a my boy!" said his father with pride. As others then built on his bold innovations, They gave us our popular radio stations! The airwaves are busy, and that's no baloney, Because of the brains of Guglielmo Marconi! Guglielmo Marconi, 1st Marquis of Marconi (Italian: [ɡuʎˈʎɛlmo maɾˈkoːni]; 25 April 1874 -- 20 July 1937) was an Italian inventor and electrical engineer, known for his pioneering work on long-distance radio transmission and for his development of Marconi's law and a radio telegraph system. Marconi is often credited as the inventor of radio, and he shared the 1909 Nobel Prize in Physics with Karl Ferdinand Braun "in recognition of their contributions to the development of wireless telegraphy". An entrepreneur, businessman, and founder in Britain in 1897 of The Wireless Telegraph & Signal Company (which became the Marconi Company), Marconi succeeded in making a commercial success of radio by innovating and building on the work of previous experimenters and physicists. In 1924 the King of Italy ennobled Marconi as a Marchese (marquis). This video is targeted to blind users. Attribution: Article text available under CC-BY-SA Creative Commons image source in video

This newsreel (without the music)would have been shown in the cinemas at the time of the disaster. Footage includes the Titanic leaving Belfast Lough for Southampton on April 2nd, 1912. Captain Smith on the Bridge of the Titanic. The video also shows various ships such the Carparthia returning from rescuing survivors. Journalists interviewing survivors. Guglielmo Marconi, the inventor of long distance radio transmission and who was credited with saving those who were saved because of his marvelous invention. Although it says this was shot on April 2nd, 2012, British Pathe think it was probably earlier. The ship still looks like work is being done to it with lots of workmen still around. The Titanic's name is in black as is other parts of the ship which ultimately ended up as white. There is also a workman's loo which can clearly be seen dangling off the left hand side of the ship - this surely would have been removed before setting sail. Business Wire 2014-10-09Guglielmo Marconi (Italian pronunciation: [ɡuʎˈʎɛːlmo marˈkoːni]; 25 April 1874 – 20 July 1937) was an Italian inventor, known as the father of long distance radio transmission and for his development of Marconi's law and a radio telegraph system. Marconi is often credited as the inventor of radio, and indeed he shared the 1909 Nobel Prize in Physics with Karl Ferdinand Braun "in recognition of their contributions to the development of wireless telegraphy". Much of Marconi's work in radio transmission was built upon previous experimentation and the commercial exploitation of ideas by others such as Hertz, Maxwell, Faraday, Popov, Lodge, Fessenden, Stone, Bose, and Tesla. As an entrepreneur, businessman, and founder of the The Wireless Telegraph & Signal Company in 1897, Marconi succeeded in making a commercial success of radio by innovating and building on the work of previous experimenters and physicists. In 1924, he was ennobled as Marchese Marconi.
Marconi was born in Bologna on April 25, 1874, the second son of Giuseppe Marconi, an Italian landowner, and his Irish wife, Annie Jameson, daughter of Andrew Jameson of Daphne Castle in the County Wexford, Ireland and granddaughter of John Jameson, founder of whiskey distillers Jameson & Sons. Marconi was educated privately in Bologna in the lab of Augusto Righi, in Florence at the Istituto Cavallero and, later, in Livorno. As a child Marconi did not do well in school.Baptized as a Catholic, he was also a member of the Anglican Church, being married into it; however, he still received a Catholic annulment.
