The former Democratic Unionist Party leader Ian Paisley, has died aged 88. Mr Paisley, who grew up in Ballymena, County Antrim, led opposition to the Good Friday agreement before entering into agreement and becoming Northern Ireland first minister in 2007. Members of the public gave their reaction his death in Belfast, Londonderry and his home town of Ballymena.
This excellent production from BBC NI was shown to commemorate the 40th Anniversary of Bloody Friday. Bloody Friday is the name given to the bombings by the Provisional Irish Republican Army (IRA) in Belfast on 21 July 1972. Twenty-two bombs exploded in the space of eighty minutes, killing nine people (including two British soldiers) and injuring 130.

BBC Coast Northern Ireland - Documentary (FULL) Don't for get to like and sub for all things Northern Ireland. Pop Goes Northern Ireland.
This BBC documentary focuses on the campaign of ethnic cleansing waged against protestants in the Ardoyne area of Belfast, Northern Ireland. For over forty years IRA and Sinn Fein catholic fundamentalist terrorists have committed religious murders of protestants, burned down homes and businesses and forced thousands of innocent protestant civilians from the area - so that catholics could take over their homes once they had gone. Between 1996 and 2004 a systemic hate campaign against a small community of 200 protestant families forced every single one of them from their homes in the Torrens area - immediately adjacent to the catholic Ardoyne ghetto. These protestants were attacked by Sinn Fein and IRA gunmen on an almost daily basis until they had left. Within hours of the last family leaving, catholic flags had been placed on boarded up homes in a sickening act of triumphalism. Around the same time a similar campaign began targeting protestants living in the Glenbryn area - to the north of Ardoyne. Hundreds of homes were destroyed, leading to thousands of protestants fleeing the area in fear of their lives. Fortunately, the protestant people from Glenbryn have steadfastly fought against the IRA religious pogroms and a vibrant community still remains in the area. This documentary follows some members of that community - and shows what life is like for a protestant living near Sinn Fein controlled areas in Northern Ireland.

Just over a year and half after the reintroduction of the numeric 2, the original 11 idents were augmented by even more 2s… and then some more… and a few more. The possibilities of what these 2s could do seemed endless. 23 years after their original launch, they have been brought back to help celebrate BBC 2’s 50th birthday… and of course BBC NI’s 90th.
This video is meant to be a simulation of what BBC TWO Northern Ireland junctions would look like if they used presentation devices which were in the style of the much-loved 1990s package. Why Northern Ireland? BBC Northern Ireland have clearly demonstrated on several occasions that they have more freedom when it comes to on-screen presentation than the Network feed. Also, as they broadcast only in SD, they do not need to worry about HD constraints. This is one of the reasons why BBC TWO Northern Ireland are currently showing 36 idents compared to the Network's mere 9. Why the 1990s? Currently, in all four nations, BBC TWO are showing 1990s idents so it would make sense to also show 1990s-themed presentation.
As you probably know the retro 90's BBC Two idents which made a temporary come back for the 50th anniversary of the channel have been brought back on a permanent basis. I for one am extremely glad as I love these idents. However the idents in Northern Ireland (where I live) are different from those in England, Scotland and Wales and I for one think their better. They have no annoying teal box awkwardly placed and NI brought back lots of the best dents, that the others haven't. Despite being smaller Northern Ireland always goes above and beyond with their presentation and for one I'm glad they gave this classic set such care, bringing back classics that haven't been seen on the other networks so far. The idents belong to the BBC of course and I originally downloaded them from The Ident Gallary. Please visit their great site, filled with loads of idents and support them.

Britain stands accused of helping known terrorists to assassinate suspected enemies of the state during the 1980s, BBC Panorama reveals the extent to which some members of the British intelligence services colluded with and even tried to direct loyalist death squads in Northern Ireland, A handful of active IRA members were assassinated but so were some innocent Catholics, Government death squads are normally associated with South American dictatorships and unthinkable in a modern democracy like Britain. With disturbing new documentary evidence and exclusive interviews the distinguished investigative exposes the secrets of Britain's dirty war, The programme focuses on the five tumultuous years that preceded the search for peace, 1985 to 1990 was very much the dark before the dawn the Provisional IRA was still throwing everything it had at the British security forces and re-armed loyalist murder gangs were assassinating IRA members suspects and Catholics alike, Panorama uncovers the role of Military Intelligence and RUC Special Branch officers in one of the most brutal and controversial murders of the troubles that of Belfast solicitor, Patrick Finucane. He exposes the lengths to which both services have gone in their attempts to disguise such criminal activities, This Panorama special is the result of 13 years of research who has had unrivalled access to secret papers and sources.

Most of the island is made up of Ireland (Irish: Éire, also known as Poblacht na hÉireann = the Republic of Ireland). The remainder is Northern Ireland, which is part of the United Kingdom. See in Ireland ============ Blarney Castle - Located in County Cork This historic castle is known for its "Blarney Stone." Tradition is that if the Blarney Stone is kissed, one will be blessed with great eloquence, better known as "the gift of the gab." One kisses the stone by lying back and being held by an employee of the castle. Photographers are there to capture the moment! Cliffs of Moher - Located in County Clare One of Ireland's biggest and most visited tourist attractions. The Cliffs are 230 meters in height and tower over the Atlantic Ocean. This attraction, whilst beautiful in the Summer, can be a bit of a tourist trap. If you intend to take your own transport, the over-priced car park is your only option (since the road is too narrow to park on) and to purchase your 'pay-and-display' parking ticket, you will need to go all the way through the gift shop (on the opposite side of the road), before returning to place it in your car. Kilkenny - One of Ireland's favourite tourist spots, this Medieval Capital just 1 hour 40 minutes train out of Dublin City is a must see. Its beautiful buildings and of course imposing Norman Castle - not to mention the numerous festivals including the Arts Festival and Rhythm and Roots Festival - make Kilkenny a most desirable location. Co. Donegal - An amazing area to see if you have your own transport, as bus services can be fairly limited. This part of the country is very traditional and you can expect to see plenty of low stone walls, thatched roof houses, rugged hills, cliffs and golden sand beaches. Best visited during Spring or Summer, there are plenty of hills walks and photo opportunities waiting to be discovered. Do in Ireland ========== Bus Tours - For travellers wishing to experience Ireland on a budget, there are a variety of inexpensive bus tours in almost every part of the country. These tours can range from hop-on hop-off busses in major cities such as Dublin and Cork to 5-day trips through some of the most scenic parts of the country. The bus drivers/guides are generally well informed about Irish history and enjoy sharing local legends and songs with anyone happy to 'lend and ear'.

Welcome to this video about our travel guides! We publish two guides, one about Tuscany and one about Ireland. Our guides are different – and we think a lot better – than other travel guides, and here are two reasons why. First, each of our guides is comprehensive – well over 1,000 pages on an iPad or Kindle Fire – so you get complete information for your trip. For example, our guide to Tuscany not only includes complete coverage of Florence and Chianti, but also contains thorough coverage of the Central hilltop towns region and Maremma, two of our favorite locations in Tuscany. Likewise, in our guide to Ireland we include many locations in Northern Ireland. Northern Ireland is an up-and-coming travel destination which is largely ignored by many other travel guides. Second, we believe that the best way to explore these wonderful destinations is by car. Many locations within Tuscany, for example, are simply not accessible by train and with so much to see and do, why be stuck in a tour bus with strangers on a schedule out of your control? The roads in Europe are terrific and the smaller roads that crisscross Tuscany are a joy to drive. The problem comes when you find yourself hopelessly lost. Navigating in a foreign land can be a real challenge and lead to many frustrations. Each of our books comes – at no additional charge – with a separate, downloadable set of GPS coordinates that can be easily loaded on your separate Garmin or tom-tom GPS device. When you arrive at your destination in Tuscany or Ireland, simply power on your GPS device, select one of the destinations in our books, and travel confidently to that destination. Available through Amazon's Kindle Store and Apple iTunes.

The Shankill Butchers is the name given to an Ulster loyalist gang—many of whom were members of the Ulster Volunteer Force (UVF)—that was active between 1975 and 1982 in Belfast, Northern Ireland. It was based in the Shankill area and was responsible for the deaths of at least 23 people, most of whom were killed in sectarian attacks. The gang was notorious for kidnapping and murdering random civilians from the Catholic community; each was beaten ferociously and had their throat hacked with a butcher's knife. Some were also tortured and attacked with a hatchet. The gang also killed six Protestants over personal disputes, and two other Protestants whom it mistook for Catholics. Most of the gang were eventually caught and, in February 1979, received the longest combined prison sentences in United Kingdom legal history. However, gang leader Lenny Murphy and his two chief "lieutenants" escaped prosecution. Murphy was killed in November 1982 by the Provisional IRA, likely acting with loyalist paramilitaries who perceived him as a threat. According to Conor Cruise O'Brien, the Butchers brought a new, frightening level of paramilitary violence to a country already hardened by death and destruction. The judge who oversaw the 1979 trial described their crimes as "a lasting monument to blind sectarian bigotry".

Election 2015: DUP and UUP agree pact in four constituencies Northern Ireland's two biggest unionist parties have agreed a general election pact in four constituencies, including the UK's most tightly contested seat. The deal between the Democratic Unionist Party and Ulster Unionist Party means representatives will field a single unionist candidate. The DUP will step aside in Fermanagh and South Tyrone and Newry and Armagh. The UUP will step aside in East Belfast and North Belfast. Sinn Féin has now called on the SDLP to form a pact. However, the SDLP told BBC NI's Good Morning Ulster that it was against the idea, calling the unionist move "a sectarian carve-up". The unionist pact includes the constituency of Fermanagh and South Tyrone, which Sinn Féin held in 2010 by a margin of just four votes. Despite six months of negotiations, the unionist parties were not able to agree a single unionist candidate for South Belfast. However, DUP leader Peter Robinson described the unionist pact as the "most comprehensive electoral agreement between our two parties in the last 29 years". Belfast Telegraph 2015-03-27Northern Ireland (Irish: Tuaisceart Éireann pronounced [ˈt̪ˠuəʃcəɾˠt̪ˠ ˈeːɾʲən̪ˠ] ( listen), Ulster Scots: Norlin Airlann or Norlin Airlan) is a part of the United Kingdom in the north-east of the island of Ireland. It shares a border with the Republic of Ireland to the south and west. As of 2001, its population was 1,685,000, constituting about 30% of the island's total population and about 3% of the population of the United Kingdom. Since the signing of the Good Friday Agreement in 1998, Northern Ireland is largely self-governing. According to the agreement, Northern Ireland co-operates with the rest of Ireland – from which it was partitioned in 1921 — on some policy areas, while other areas are reserved for the Government of the United Kingdom, though the Republic of Ireland "may put forward views and proposals".
Northern Ireland was for many years the site of a violent and bitter inter-communal conflict — the Troubles — which was caused by divisions between nationalists, who are predominantly Roman Catholic, and unionists, who are predominantly Protestant. Unionists want Northern Ireland to remain as a part of the United Kingdom, and generally see themselves as British, while nationalists wish for it to be politically reunited with the rest of Ireland, independent of British rule, and generally see themselves as Irish. Additionally, people from both sides of the community may describe themselves as Northern Irish. Since 1998, most of the paramilitary groups involved in the Troubles have ceased their armed campaigns.

Ireland (pronounced [ˈaɪrlənd] ( listen); Irish: Éire [ˈeːɾʲə] (
listen); Ulster Scots: Airlann or Airlan) is an island to the northwest of continental Europe. It is the third-largest island in Europe and the twentieth-largest island on Earth. To its east is the larger island of Great Britain, from which it is separated by the Irish Sea.
Politically, Ireland is divided between the Republic of Ireland, which covers just under five-sixths of the island, and Northern Ireland, a part of the United Kingdom, which covers the remainder and is located in the northeast of the island. The population of Ireland is approximately 6.4 million. Just under 4.6 million live in the Republic of Ireland and just under 1.8 million live in Northern Ireland.
Relatively low-lying mountains surrounding a central plain epitomise Ireland's geography with several navigable rivers extending inland. The island has lush vegetation, a product of its mild but changeable oceanic climate, which avoids extremes in temperature. Thick woodlands covered the island until the 17th century. Today, it is one of the most deforested areas in Europe. There are twenty-six extant mammal species native to Ireland.

Will leave the people, ignorant of everything that's relevant
So who is who defending, and who's protecting who?
Until you know the answers, don't pretend you do do do do don't pretend you do!
So we see the brave young soldiers
And we read about the murders
Then we place our weak opinions
On what the papers tell us
But telling half the truth is as bad as telling lies
For a war to keep continuing
There has to be two sides!
But who is who defending, who's protecting who?
Until you know the answers, don't pretend you do do do do don't pretend you do!
Supporting one side or the other
Is really nothing more
Than saying there is no solution
But to carry on the war
And both the IRA and the army
Are equally to blame
In general terms of violence
You know they're doing just, they're doing just, they're doing just the same
Doing just the same
So who is who defending, and who's protecting who?
Until you know the answers, don't pretend you do do do do don't pretend you do!
