In a campaign to save Baslow Village shop - which has been there for 70 years - our friends at BBC East Midlands Today came to talk to the Baslow SOS campaign, and the owners of the shop. Despite the driving snow, the villagers turned out in force to show their solidarity with David and Christine Upton. Watch the video and see for yourself what a travesty it would be if this local shop - employing local people, and stocking local goods (from farmers, bakers and micro breweries) was squished by New River Retail and the Co Op. He has overall responsibility for regional output across TV, radio and online from the East Midlands region, which includes ‘BBC East Midlands Today’, ‘Inside Out’, ‘Sunday Politics’, ‘Late Kick Off’ and three BBC local radio stations – ‘BBC Radio Nottingham’, ‘BBC Radio Derby’ and ‘BBC Radio Leicester’. Stuart joined the BBC in 2009 from ITV, where he was responsible for their flagship regional news programme, ‘London Tonight’, as well as being a member of the team which manages ‘ITV News’ at ITN. During his time at ‘London Tonight’ Stuart was instrumental in re-launching the regional news programme in 2004, developing a format that was then rolled out to all ITV regions around England and Wales. Stuart began his career in television at Channel 4 in 2002 running the news operation on the Channel 4 breakfast programme ‘RI:SE’. Prior to this Stuart spent several years working in radio, notably as Programme Controller of both ‘LBC 1152AM’, and ‘ITN News Direct 97.3FM’, London's two speech radio stations. Stuart is based at the BBC’s East Midland’s headquarters in Nottingham.

ATV (Associated Television) acquired the Elstree Studios on the edge of London in 1958 and through the 60s and 70s made a vast array of ATV's biggest shows there ... from The Muppet Show to Family Fortunes When ATV was restructured as Central Independent Television from 1982, one of the conditions of their franchise renewal by the Independent Broadcasting Authority was that ATV should leave any London facilities and become more firmly based in the Midlands. The Elstree Studios remained in operation by Central TV up until July 1983 when production moved to the new East Midlands TV Centre at Lenton Lane, Nottingham. The BBC then took over the Elstree complex in 1984, which is still home to major series such as Eastenders and Holby City. To mark the occasion of the end of the ATV/Central era, Elstree staff produced this internal tribute video looking back at all the shows made at the studios in the ATV (and to a much lesser extent, Central TV) era. Many staff were unhappy about the closure of Elstree and the move to Nottingham and, certainly, the subtext of this internal film for Central's 'Closed Circuit' is a fond look back at ATV and a certain amount of bitterness at the changes implemented by Central. The video is narrated by Shaw Taylor, a former ATV continuity announcer and best known as the presenter of the 'Police 5' crime show on several ITV regions.

Another episode where I do 3 stations in one day. In this episode I have a day out in the East Midlands. Starting at my local station I catch the usual early morning train to Durham then I travel to Newark North Gate station first a station which I had not done before. Afterwards I visit the city of Lincoln which I had never been to before, I end up climbing up a steep bank to the cathedral and then have a good session at the station. Afterwards I catch an East Midlands Trains class 153 back to Newark then head down to Grantham for a couple of hours in the evening. The journey coming back was full of delays both on the train and the bus from Durham back to Chester-le-Street. Date filmed 1/11/14

noodls 2015-03-26The East Midlands is one of the regions of England, consisting of most of the eastern half of the traditional region of the Midlands. It encompasses the combined area of Nottinghamshire, Derbyshire, Leicestershire, Rutland, Northamptonshire and most of Lincolnshire.
A looser definition of the East Midlands might also include the City of Peterborough (once part of Northamptonshire, but now Cambridgeshire), and North Lincolnshire.[citation needed]
The highest point in the region is Kinder Scout in the Peak District, at 2,088 ft (636 m). The centre of the East Midlands area lies roughly between Bingham and Bottesford. The geographical centre of England lies in Higham on the Hill in west Leicestershire, close to the boundary between the East and West Midlands. 88% of the land is rural, although agriculture accounts for less than three percent of the region's jobs. All of the coastline within the region falls within Lincolnshire.
The region is home to large quantities of limestone, and the East Midlands Oil Province. Charnwood Forest is noted for its abundant levels of volcanic rock, estimated to be approximately 600 million years old.
Sarah Dilys Outen MBE FRGS (born 26 May 1985) is an English adventurer. She is the first woman and the youngest person to row solo across the Indian Ocean.
Outen attended Stamford High School before reading Biology at St Hugh's College, Oxford where she started rowing in 2004.[citation needed]
After an eleven day failed attempt which she dubbed her 'Warm Up Lap'[citation needed], Outen set out again from Fremantle, Western Australia, on 1 April 2009 in her 19ft boat called Serendipity. She rowed for 124 days, 14 hours and 9 minutes before arriving at Bois des Amourettes, on the island of Mauritius, on 3 August 2009. She was the first woman to attempt the crossing single-handedly, and only the fourth person to ever complete a solo crossing.
Her journey raised more than £30,000 for two charities, Arthritis Care and Arthritis Research Campaign. She dedicated the crossing to the memory of her father who died in 2006. She was elected Fellow of the Royal Geographical Society shortly afterwards and awarded three Guinness World Records for her crossing.
