Here's a fascinating bbc radio play circa 1985 "Willys Wild Oats" about William Whiteley the Victorian founder of Whiteleys department store in public an advocate teetotal Christian values, but in private a philanderer who was more than a little fond of the feminine charms of his shop girls who was shot dead by a young man who claimed to be his illegitimate son in 1907. William Whiteley (29 September 1831 – 24 January 1907) was an English entrepreneur of the late 19th and early 20th centuries. He was the founder of Whiteleys department store. In 1851 he paid his first visit to London to see the Great Exhibition. The exhibition fired his imagination, particularly the magnificent displays of manufactured goods. All that could be bought or sold was on display, but nothing was for sale. Whiteley had the idea that he could create a store as grand as the Crystal Palace where all these goods could be under one roof and it would make him the most important shopkeeper in the world. Wakefield, once the centre of the Yorkshire woollen trade, was in decline and Whiteley now wanted to be something more than a small town draper. On completion of his apprenticeship he arrived in London with £10 in his pocket. Seizing every opportunity, he acquired a row of shops in Westbourne Grove in 1867 and turned them into 17 departments. Dressmaking was started in 1868, and a house agency and refreshment room, the first ventures outside drapery, opened in 1872. By then 622 people were employed on the premises and a further 1,000 outside. Whiteley started selling food in 1875, and a building and decorating department was added in 1876. This proved to be particularly profitable, as the large stuccoed houses in the area needed regular repainting. Claiming that he could provide anything from a pin to an elephant, William Whiteley dubbed himself "The Universal Provider". He met strong opposition from smaller tradesmen, and also from the local authorities over his grand building plans, and several bad fires in the 1880s may have been caused by opponents. Business nonetheless prospered, aided by a delivery service extending up to 25 miles (40 km), and in 1887 the store was described as 'an immense symposium of the arts and industries of the nation and of the world'. By 1890 over 6,000 staff were employed in the business, most of them living in company-owned male and female dormitories, having to obey 176 rules and working 7 am to 11 pm, six days a week. Whiteley also bought massive farmlands and erected food-processing factories to provide produce for the store and for staff catering. In 1896 he earned an unsolicited Royal Warrant from Queen Victoria - an unprecedented achievement. On 24 January 1907, Whiteley was shot dead at his shop by Horace George Raynor, aged 29, who claimed that he was Whiteley's illegitimate son. In his will Whiteley left £1,000,000 (a fabulous amount at that time, equivalent in 2014 to £89.5 million). Some of the money was used to create Whiteley Village, a retirement village near Walton-on-Thames.

Vera english series Vera thriller, vera series, vera english series, vera english episodes, vera english police series, vera english episodes s04E04, vera english series policies, vera policier series, The central character is Detective Chief Inspector (DCI) Vera Stanhope of the fictional Northumberland & City Police (Northumbria & City Police in some episodes) who is obsessive about her work and driven by her own demons. If she’s lonely she doesn’t show it and faces the world with caustic wit, guile and courage, often with highly strung bad temper. Her trusted and long-suffering colleague is Detective Sergeant (DS) Joe Ashworth (David Leon), her right-hand man and surrogate son. Forthright, drink-loving Inspector Vera Stanhope and her young sergeant Joe Ashworth investigate when 15-year-old Luke Armstrong is strangled and placed in a bath strewn with flowers and candles. Luke's widowed mother Julie tells them that Luke's friend Tommy accidentally drowned some months earlier and initial suspicion falls on Tommy's father. But then teacher Lily Marsh is murdered, also throttled and dumped on a beach, surrounded by flowers. The body is found by a group of ornithologists, including husband and wife Peter and Felicity Calvert, into whose beach house Lily was due to move, and Gary Wright, a womanising friend of Julie. Lily had a sugar daddy who paid money into her account and Vera learns that Tommy had photographed her with this man and had drowned trying to save his camera when it fell into the sea. She deduces that he is rubbing out evidence of the affair and believes the lover to be Peter Calvert. DS Ashworth's daughter is a witness to the death of a pensioner, seemingly stabbed, on a rush hour train she and her father were travelling on. The investigation leads back to the past lives of residents of Harbour Street in a quiet coastal village. When a young property developer dies on a beach in Whitley Bay, Vera Stanhope's investigation includes his father, his step-mother, brother, and an estranged sister. Another suspect is an arcade owner who hated the father since his own 15 year old son had died at their house years before, falling from the roof, accused of burgling the property. A man killed by a single gunshot wound is found by his car in a quarry. The victim was in Northumberland to sell his recently deceased grandfather's property but at the last minute pulled out of the sale to a wealthy couple who own a nearby Deer shoot. A second vehicle is found burnt out with the remains of a dead Stag in the back and poaching is suspected until Vera delves into the interwoven lives of the suspects that knew the victim and the fate of a huge Stag called The Emperor Hadrian. A man, outwardly happily married, is discovered in the river with his shoe laces tied together suggesting suicide until the post mortem confirms murder. Vera's investigation is joined by a Revenue and Customs investigator for whom the victim was an informant into the smuggling of alcohol which widens the suspects from family to include his business associates.

The auditor general is being called on to investigate claims £10m was spent on improving roads to Cardiff Bay on the understanding the BBC would move there. South Wales Central AM Eluned Parrott said she had written to Huw Vaughan Thomas asking him to intervene. Former First Minister Rhodri Morgan has accused the BBC of a "breach of faith" following a decision to relocate its headquarters to Cardiff city centre. A BBC Cymru Wales spokesman has said Mr Morgan is mistaken. The auditor general's office said it had not yet received Ms Parrott's letter. But it said it would be "considering the issues" and would look at the "extent to which this matter warrants further audit scrutiny". It was announced last week that BBC Wales will move its HQ from Llandaff to a purpose-built building in Central Square in Cardiff. But Mr Morgan has since claimed the Welsh government agreed to invest £10m in new roads before building work on BBC Wales' Roath Lock drama village began.

BBC News 2015-03-28Dame Judith Olivia “Judi” Dench, CH, DBE, FRSA (born 9 December 1934) is an English film, stage and television actress.
Dench made her professional debut in 1957 with the Old Vic Company. Over the following few years she played in several of William Shakespeare's plays in such roles as Ophelia in Hamlet, Juliet in Romeo and Juliet and Lady Macbeth in Macbeth. She branched into film work, and won a BAFTA Award as Most Promising Newcomer; however, most of her work during this period was in theatre. Not generally known as a singer, she drew strong reviews for her leading role in the musical Cabaret in 1968.
During the next two decades, she established herself as one of the most significant British theatre performers, working for the National Theatre Company and the Royal Shakespeare Company. In television, she achieved success during this period, in the series A Fine Romance from 1981 until 1984 and in 1992 began a continuing role in the television romantic comedy series As Time Goes By.
Her film appearances were infrequent until she was cast as M in GoldenEye (1995), a role she has played in each James Bond film since. She received several notable film awards for her role as Queen Victoria in Mrs. Brown (1997), and has since been acclaimed for her work in such films as Shakespeare in Love (1998), Chocolat (2000), Iris (2001), Mrs Henderson Presents (2005) and Notes on a Scandal (2006), and the television production The Last of the Blonde Bombshells (2001).
