McVeigh started her career as a reporter for BBC Northern Ireland, reporting on both local news stories and various aspects of the troubles,
McVeigh became an occasional presenter for BBC Newsline from the late 1990s. Transferring permanently to BBC News as a reporter in 2002, she became a presenter from summer 2006 on return from maternity leave, replacing Joanna Gosling who moved to the weekday schedule. McVeigh normally presents on Fridays between 7pm and 10pm and between 7pm and 12pm at the weekend, alongside Clive Myrie.
She anchored much of the daytime coverage for the UK Papal visit on the BBC News Channel during September 2010.
McVeigh married BBC manager Martin Read in Tullysarran, County Armagh.
