Paul Lorin Kantner (born March 17, 1941) is an American rock musician, known for co-founding the psychedelic rock band Jefferson Airplane and its spin-off band Jefferson Starship.
Although the band was originally formed by Marty Balin, Kantner eventually became the main man of Jefferson Airplane and captained the group through various successor incarnations of Jefferson Starship. Kantner has the longest continuous membership with the band; at times he was its only member. A political anarchist, Kantner once advocated the use of psychedelic drugs such as LSD for mind expansion and spiritual growth, and is a prominent advocate of the legalization of marijuana. In a 1986 interview, Kantner shared his thoughts about cocaine and alcohol, saying, "Cocaine, particularly, is a bummer. It's a noxious drug that turns people into jerks. And alcohol is probably the worst drug of all. As you get older and accomplish more things in life in general, you realize that drugs don't help, particularly if you abuse them." When Kantner suffered a cerebral hemorrhage in 1980, his attending physician at Cedars-Sinai, Stephen Levy, was quick to point out it was not a drug-related issue, saying: "There is zero relationship between Paul's illness and drugs. He doesn't use drugs." Kantner's primary instrument is the rhythm guitar, and he also sings lead or backup vocals. Kantner has three children, sons Gareth and Alexander, and daughter China.
Grace Slick (born Grace Barnett Wing; October 30, 1939) is an American singer, songwriter, and former model, best known as one of the lead singers of the rock groups The Great Society, Jefferson Airplane, Jefferson Starship, and Starship, as well as for her work as a solo artist from the mid-1960s to the mid-1990s. Slick was an important figure in the 1960s psychedelic rock movement, known for her witty lyrics and powerful contralto vocals.
Grace Barnett Wing was born in Evanston, Illinois, to Ivan W. Wing (1907–1987) and Virginia (née Barnett; 1910–1984), the latter a direct descendant of passengers of the Mayflower). In 1949, a month before her tenth birthday, her brother Chris Wing was born. Her father was transferred several times when she was a child and, in addition to the Chicago area, she lived in Los Angeles and San Francisco before her family finally settled in Palo Alto, California, south of San Francisco, in the early 1950s. She attended Palo Alto Senior High School before switching to Castilleja High School, a private all-girls school in Palo Alto. Following graduation she attended Finch College in New York from 1957 to 1958 and the University of Miami in Coral Gables, Florida, from 1958–1959.
James Douglas "Jim" Morrison (December 8, 1943 – July 3, 1971) was the lead singer and lyricist of the rock band The Doors, as well as a poet. Following The Doors' explosive rise to fame in 1967, Morrison developed a severe alcohol and drug dependency that culminated in his death at the age of 27 in Paris. He is presumed to have died from a heroin overdose, but as no autopsy was performed, the events surrounding his death and the exact cause of it continue to be disputed by many to this day.
Morrison was well known for often improvising spoken word poetry passages while the band played live. Due to his wild personality and performances, he is regarded by critics and fans as one of the most iconic, charismatic and pioneering frontmen in rock music history. Morrison was ranked number 47 on Rolling Stone's list of the "100 Greatest Singers of All Time", and number 22 on Classic Rock Magazine's "50 Greatest Singers In Rock".
James Douglas Morrison was born in Melbourne, Florida, to future Rear Admiral George Stephen Morrison and Clara Morrison. Morrison had a sister, Anne Robin, who was born in 1947 in Albuquerque, New Mexico; and a brother, Andrew Lee Morrison, who was born in 1948 in Los Altos, California. He was of Irish and Scottish descent.
Marty Balin (born Martyn Jerel Buchwald; January 30, 1942) is an American musician. He is best known as the founder and one of the lead singers of the psychedelic rock band Jefferson Airplane.
Balin was born Martyn Jerel Buchwald in Cincinnati, Ohio, the son of Catherine Eugenia "Jean" (née Talbot) and Joseph Buchwald. His paternal grandparents immigrated from Eastern Europe. His father was Jewish and his mother was Episcopalian. Balin is mildly autistic, and as a child he struggled with this while growing up in Ohio, and it affected him into his adulthood. Marty attended Washington High School in San Francisco, California and is a member of the Washington Hall of Fame.
In 1962, Martyn renamed himself Marty Balin and began recording with Challenge Records, releasing the singles "Nobody But You" and "I Specialize in Love". By 1964, Balin was leading a folk music quartet called The Town Criers, with fellow band members Larry Vargo, Jan Ellickson and Bill Collins.
Balin was the founder and one of the lead vocalists for Jefferson Airplane from 1965 to 1971.
John William "Jack" Casady (born April 13, 1944) is an American musician considered one of the foremost bass guitarists of the rock music era and best known as a member of Jefferson Airplane. First playing as a lead guitarist with the Washington D.C. area rhythm and blues band "The Triumphs", he switched to bass during his high school years and while still underage (and with a forged I.D.), played the Washington D.C club scene, backing artists such as Little Anthony and the Imperials and Ray Charles. He became the bass player for Jefferson Airplane when lead guitarist Jorma Kaukonen, a high school friend and former Triumphs rhythm guitarist, invited him to join in late September 1965. Jefferson Airplane became the first successful exponent of the San Francisco Sound. Their singles, including "Somebody to Love" and "White Rabbit," had a more polished style and successfully charted in 1967 and 1968. Casady, along with the other members of Jefferson Airplane, was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 1996.

There's an island way out in the sea
Where the babies they all grow on trees
And its jolly good fun
To swing in the sun
But you gotta watch out if you sneeze-sneeze
You gotta watch out if you sneeze
Yeah you gotta watch out if you sneeze
For swingin' up there in the breeze
You're liable to cough
You might very well fall off
And tumble down flop on your knees-knees
Tumble down flop on your knees
And when the stormy winds wail
And the breezes blow high in a gale
There's a curious dropping and flopping and plopping
And fat little babies just hail-hail
Fat little babies just hail
And the babies lie there in a pile
And the grownups they come after awhile
And they always pass by
All the babies that cry
And take only babies that smile-smile
They take only babies that smile...
MUSIC & Lyrics: Jack Traylor
Paine and Pierce and Robespierre, Juarez and Danton,
Luther, King and Lumumba dead but far from gone
Lenin, Cleaver, Jesus too, outlaws in their nations,
Revolutionaries all, dreamed of liberation
God is up in heaven his agents here on earth
The church has said that this man rules, he's best because of birth.
But what's that noise down in the street, who dares to shout and sing?
With all his courtiers at his side, who dares to touch the king?
Old man get some soldiers, keep them close at hand
There's a fire in the country, there's a flame come to the land
Seven thousand loyal troops, in ranks they stretch so far
With seven thousand well armed men, no one can touch the czar.
Louis watch the prisons, send the goons around
Is that Paris burning, is the Bastille falling down?
And where are all the mercenaries - paid for by the king?
Have they joined the mob you say, doesn't money mean anything?
Old men get some soldiers, keep them close at hand,
The seeds that were sown yesterday now flower in the land
And guard yourself most carefully with military might.
She'll suck on anything you give her
Stare at anything that's shiny bright
Her voice cuts through the sea even when its stormy
But she's only two feet high - she'll get higher
I hope she sees some things that will make her time happy
It all comes in so fast it all comes in
She sleeps through almost any sound
Even when its screaming loud and clear
But she wakes up and smiles at a friendly voice
If it whispers softly in her ear
I see in her new face, a clear beginning
It all comes in so fast it all comes in
She knows who she is without looking
She says it out happy when the feeling is there
She's an all new person who says just what she feels
She's a fat faced goddess of nowhere
I hope she sees some things that will make her time happy
Lyrics & Music: Paul Kantner
Where will you go what will you do
What will you see when your night is thru
What can you do where will you go
When the people of this planet send you away from here
My bo
Where do you come from white boy what is your land
Everybody else knows where they come from
You don't know your place you never did you never can
You can't find a place in this land
chorus
Blacks and Reds and Apaches and Jews
All know where they come from but you don't seem to know
Baby do you understand
You appeared in the Caucasus mountains the southern Russia of now
And you spread your peculiar form of death from Mexico to Moscow
You surprised the Europeans the Egyptian too
All of a sudden you appeared on their land
You made mountains for the Incas built pyramids for the Pharoah man
And you grew and you lived by their hands
chorus
Viking Roman fair hair Alexander Emperor slave.
D'you come from the earth D'you come from the sky?
Nobody seems to know You build and you burn create and destroy,
You rule me now fair skin man with an unfair hand.

Where were you living when the earth was formed
What can you do where will you go

Millions of children in motion
All of us waiting for the rain
To wash away the dust from our bodies
Can you dance, can you remember
How to dance and get along with all of us
For the rest of our life
And yet there were some of the men and ladies
Who remembered that in the beginning we were one
A body and one spirit in all of our bodies
Whoa... oh sanctuary
Come and sail with me ... revelation
Standing on the edge of civilization
Farewell to the good times behind you
Goodbye San Francisco Dream
Good mornin San Francisco ladies
Good mornin San Francisco crazies
Get it on, come along now
Just maybe one more chance
To get it on with all of us for all of our life

Look for Atlantis, it is waiting for you - it lives there and it breathes there
Look for Rosemary to open the door for you
And she sees you and she needs you
Enter the cavern
Of the starmaker
Sundance
All through you
Holding together holding together
To the children of the Viet Cong
And to the songs of the Yaqui and the Sioux
The Seminole and the Apache too
We're lookin for you - we need you
I see the wolfpack
Flashin down
From the mountain
And the children
Of the town
Run down beside them now
Holding together holding together
Ride the tiger
You can feel the universe
Inside of you
We can shining on
Thru you
Cold shimmering
Silver - fire of the
Morning sun - streak
Flash bam up and
Away from the forest
Up and away from
No rising sun
We leave the earth to the wind
To the cool clean air that should have been here and we can and we go into nova
I see the wolfpack
Come flashin down
From the mountain
And the children
Of the town run down
Beside them now
I see the Empire is
Breakin' down
From the inside
And the underground
Ain't no place for
Hidin now
It's a way
To move
You are the ocean
That we travel
Through
On the way to
Andromeda
50 million
Light years

The summer was dry like your nose when you've been behind coke for a day and a
season
We sail out into the grasshopper nite and we seek the righteous poison
Sunday morning in speedway, y'know the people come around for a reason
SUNDAY MORNIN SUNDAY MORNIN
The land is green and you make it grow, go to the forest and move
The sound of thundering electrical energy calls us to the park in the noon
C'mon anybody-now fill my pipe * to the park * to the forest and move
When I feel you coming round me - ridin in the sun
Goin home move your mind toward Mars and then beyond
Genesis is not the answer to what we had before
I we altogether in you
You know I remember the 23rd of November
In the abyss of Chicago you can see the barbed wire - pigs around a lot of
nothin
The witch hunters wail and they bark and they wheeze and they try to turn us
into their poison
You know - a starship circlin in the sky - it ought to be ready by 1990
They'll be buildin it up in the air even since 1980
People with a clever plan can assume the role of the mighty
and HIJACK THE STARSHIP
Carry 7000 people past the sun
And our babes'll wander naked thru the cities of the universe
Cmon
free minds, free bodies, free dope, free music
the day is on its way the day is ours
You breathe out You breathe in
And the glow of the machine'll get you on
Moving slow, don't feel the changes
Gracefully growing - as wild as we can be
Only the sun knows what we really need to know
Only the sun holds the secret
And more than human can we be
Cause human's truly locked
To this planetary circle
You gotta ride said the Doktor of space
I have lived here once before
The lites in the nite are a village of stars
Of stars that I have explored
Beyond the idea of beyond the void
And beyond that and more
Parallel lines in this village of stars
Will lead you to the second door
Time won't wait for the Doktor of space from the city of the sun to come
WHERE DO YOU GO FROM HERE
CHAOS OR COMMUNITY
CAN'T YOU SEE - ON THIS AND FUTURE SUNDAYS
7000 Gypsies swirlin together
Offering to the sun in the name of the weather
instrumental
Words/Music: Kantner, Crosby
Have You Seen The Stars Tonight?
Would you like to go up on 'A' Deck and look at them with me?
Have You Seen The Stars Tonight?
Would you like to go up for a stroll and keep me company?
Do you know
We could go?
We are free
Anyplace you can think of
We could be
Have you seen the stars tonight?
Have you looked at all the family of stars?
Lyrics & Music: Grace Slick
So we all went through the wall
No one uses doors anymore
We all want to be that small
We can't fit if we're fat and that's all
chorus
Some days you do
Anything anything looks good to do
Some days hardly smiling boy
Well your tongue's so thin it makes no noise
I just don't hear a sound
Don't start pulling it apart
If you can't put it back together again
Don't you roll over in your bed too fast
Land on the floor in nothing but your cold bare skin
chorus
Some days you do
Anything anything looks good to do
Some days hardly smiling boy
Well your tongue's so thin it makes no noise
How do you feel to shoot down your brother now
And bury us in cages of cement and steel
What do you see when you look at one another now
Who do you see tell me how do you feel
Sing a song for the children who are gone
Sing a song for Diana
Huntress of the moon and a lady of the Earth
Music: David Freiberg
Lyrics: Grace Slick
Look in the mirror you're lookin' guilty
Did the devil just give you the nod
You may be thinking you're funny lookin'
Well you're right that's right you're plenty odd
But think about it think about it
If you were funny enough
You could play great god
And I would fall down on my knees to you
Fall down flat on my face
I don't have to ask you where you're going
I just sit here laaghing & I watch the race
Nobody needs to baptize me
Anytime I laugh I got religion
Cross my forehead cross my knees
I'll take any good sign I'm a clay pigeon
Nobody needs to baptize me
Anytime I laugh I got religion
And I fall down on my knees to you
Music & Lyrics: Grace Slick
Somebody aimed you when you were young
But nobody ever fired
Now you just sit there inside the gun
Bullet you're getting old and tired
If you want out - get out and get it all
I mean a fair trial is no trial at all
You're not guilty you can't even move without
A human hand
You can't cock yourself woman
You need a man
All the way you need him
All the way
All the way across the floor
Across the board
The man's only got one finger
He doesn't need anymore
He makes his way one prong down
All the way
All the way
All the way across the floor
Seven inches of pleasure
Seven inches going home
Somebody must have measured
All the way down the old bone
All the way
All the way
All the way
How do you feel as you cut
Down your children now
And leave them dying
On the grass in the sun
What do you see
When you look at one another
Now?
Tell me old man
Tell me where will you run?
Sing a song
For the children going down
Remember - the ones you know
Remember how we danced
And remember what we sang
In America
So many years ago
Words/Music: Kantner, Slick, Crosby
Last electric Sunday mornin' waitin' in the park for the dawn
Listenin' to all the animals in the Park and in the city beyond
Flashin' with my lady. Sky goin' black to blue
She said I got a surprise for you
A child is coming
A child is coming
A child is coming to yu
What you gonna do when Uncle Samuel comes around
Askin' for the young one's name
And lookin' for the print of his hand for the files in their numbers game
I don't want his chance for freedom to ever be that slim
Let's not tell 'em about him --
It's gettin' better
Lyrics & Music: Paul Kantner
You have left your body be aware if you care
Your mind has left your body and for this one moment you are
Under the polar ice cap in a place we call home
How is it there white bear like that where you grow...
Now all of you come back to here and now elsewhen to there
Move on out the other way where...
Do you find yourself floating growing there
chorus
Riders of the rainbow
Let it grow let it grow
You can exercise your mind on where you want to go
And y'can see the city lights flashin' two thousand miles below you
You can feel the sands of Zanzibar or pierce the nearest sun
Find out what and who you are and if you need to run
chorus
Riders of the rainbow
Let it grow let it grow
There is one moment in your life and it can come at any time
And you remember all of what went on from the instant you were born
Thru your early years
And if you can fasten on that moment and expand thru the afterglow
You can reverse your mind in time and travel back to when
The earth was formed
The sky was born
And the universe began
chorus
Riders of the rainbow
Let it grow let it grow
You have left your body
Return when you may
When I was a boy I watched the wolves
When I was a boy I watched wolfpack
Run, I watched the wolves
till the mornin' sun
And as I grew I soon found the wolfpack grow on me
Laser bright feel the lunar light comin down on me
Moonlight, leave me be, comin down on me
We Roll and we go thru the mountain snow
Wolfpack silver, down to the water
Timber line leader gonna find you
Getcha goin down to the nighttime
No eyes shine on the mind protected
No light shines on the fang neglected
Run with the wolfpack
When I was young and low out here in San Francisco
I could rely on the fire of my friends, now I can
Carry a few and I do when I can we get
By however we can
Me and my friends we roll thru the hills in the nighttime
Me and my friends run into the mornin sunshine
I suppose you could yell at your dog
He'd be barking his face right back
I imagine you calling yourself big fang
Observing you run with the pack
Wolfpack werewolf, gleaming on the hillside
She-wolf dripping come here and find me
Down by the cool clear waterside
Down by the nighttime
Bow to the moon / lean to the morning sun
Feel how clean / when the night when your nite is done
Run with the wolfpack
Get down be bright go back, run with the wolfpack
We have the mountains, we have the town now
Battle cruiser, two tone silver loser
Run with the wolfpack
Run with the wolfpack
Lyrics & Music: Paul Kantner
Lyrics: Grace Slick
Walkin down the road to glorytown
Walkin on the ocean water
Walkin down the road to glory town
Lookin for the pharoah's daughter
I'm goin' down and if I don't come back
Tie all my dope on a wire wheel track
Give it to the man who'll have them back
From my life from my life
chorus
Oh... honey have a time on me
Oh... baby getcha high on me
Oh... wont you try a dance on me
Oh... honey have a time on me
Walkin down the road to glorytown
Walkin on the ocean water
Walkin down the road to glory town
Huntin for the pharoah's daughter
She's makin' it hotter & hotter
Take my hand it's an avalanche
It'll worry your mind but take a chance
Take off your tie but don't leave the dance
Of your life of your life
You know we found a place on the land
Where we can lay down and watch the ocean roll
And we walk in the sand my lady and me
And we watch and see the child grow
But the hand of man came runnin thru
Runnin thru you and me
Hurricane nighttime sympathy for you and for me
And there ain't no more room here, no more room here
No more room on this planet to grow
The rambler man he comes and he goes in our land
And gets you people on and we sing his song
With a little bit of San Francisco added on
Gonna get you people here all together, gonna roll,
Roll on you - try to move your minds together,
Gonna try to pull you thru -
Sub carbon oscillation, sunshine blurring fascination
Pulsar craft, moving fast, gonna take me past the hand of man to you
The sword of the lord don't mean nothin to me if he won't get down
On the people makin' such a mess of the land and the sea all around me...
Got to learn to leave the planet be
No more room here to fuck around like we did before,
Just maybe one more chance to leave it be.
SUNFIGHTER - GUNFIGHTER -
MOUNT THE EARTH AND LEARN TO RIDE HER -
FEEL THE LAND MOVIN UNDER YOU
I can feel you all around me
I can feel you huntin, bowstring weary,
Hear me clearly - I see you -
And I like it here -
I like it here
SUNFIGHTER - GUNFIGHTER -
MOUNT THE EARTH AND LEARN TO RIDE HER -
Words: Kantner, Slick, Balin, Blackman
Music: Kantner
What you gonna do when you feel your lady rollin'
How you gonna feel when you see your lady strollin'
On the deck of the starship
With her head hooked into Andromeda
C'mon Hijack
Gotta get back and ahead to the things that matter
Amerika hates her crazies
And you gotta let go you know
gotta let go you know
gotta let go you know
gotta let go you know or else you stay
SPILLIN' OUT OF THE STEEL GLASS
GRAVITY GONE FROM THE CAGE
A MILLION POUNDS GONE FROM YOUR HEAVY MASS
ALL THE YEARS GONE FROM YOUR AGE
Hydroponic gardens and forests
Glistening with lakes in the Jupiter starlite
Room for babies and Byzantine dancing astronauts of renown
The magician and the pantechnicon
Take along the farmer and the physician
We gotta get out and down
Back into the future
Beyond our own time again
Reachin' for tomorrow
It's so fine Starshine
THE MELTING ACID FEVER STREAKIN' THRU MY MIND
MAKES IT OH SO DIFFICULT TO SEE YOU
AND OH SO EASY TO TOUCH YOU
I MELT WITH YOU
FEEL WITH YOU
MAKE LOVE FOR YOU
AT YOU
AROUND YOU
I LOVE YOU
Dear Brumus, the ship'll be ours and you got to roll with it
Though your master's head's blown off you got to go with it
Roll with the natural flow
Like water off a spinning ball
Out - the one remaining way to go
Free - the only way to fall
The light in the night is the sun
And it can carry you around the planetary ground
And the planetary whip of the sun
Will carry you well past Gideon
And the people you see will leave you be
more than the ones you've known before
Hey - rollin' on
We come and go like a comet
We are wanderers
Are you anymore?
The land is green and you make it grow
And you gotta let go you know
You gotta let go you know
You gotta let go you know
Or else you stay
MANKIND GONE FROM THE CAGE
ALL THE YEARS GONE FROM YOUR AGE
At first
I was irridescent
Then
I became transparent
Finally
Lyrics & Music: Paul Kantner
Lyrics: Grace Slick
He's stronger by talk than by sight
But by sight he'll know you
You buy him a ride he'll know you
Somebody's bound to lead you
Sooner or later you're bound to go
You don't know what this man feels like
He doesn't care if you think you know
Somebody's bound to lead you
If that man got a smile on his face
Sooner or later you're bound to go
bound to go
Let me tell you bout a man I knew
He roamed the depth and the breadth of China
On a horse that he grew himself
From the bark of a tree on mainland China
And he had a time yes he had the time of his life in China
He carried strife and harmony to all the people on the mainland
And there was a warlord who rode the murky depths of China
With a shotgun in his hand and he wondered where the people'd gone to
Have you got the time to listen while i sing this song
I had the time to listen to the man go right and wrong and right thru
China
chorus
And it ain't what you want it's what you need
No it ain't what you want it's what you need
And I'd rather be here than yesterday
It ain't what you want it's what you need
And there was a lady she rolled around in town in China
And there was a lady she rolled and rolled
And she killed a war she made the warlord rise in time
She sat him down took him down and she laid him out for just one more
round
Drunk in a beautiful garden celebration
Here comes the Khan Storm the palace look for Alice
Rising Oriental girl diving back for just one more pearl
chorus
And it ain't what she wants it's what she needs
She don't want your sound she wants your country
And I'd rather be next year than on the way to Bombay
Throw down all your
silver spoons - eat
all of the raw meat
with your hands.
Pick it up piece by piece
Pick it up piece by piece
Pick it up piece by piece
Where are the bodies
for dinner?
I want my food!
What if you were
starving to death and
they only food you had
was me - what would
you say to the cannibal
question? Would your
answer be perfectly
free?
Your mama told you never
to eat your friends
with your fingers and
hands, but I say you
ought to eat what
you will - shove it
in your mouth any way
that your can.
You think that I will come
to your mouth, looking for
a home. But I get stuck
sideways in your throat
like a good old chicken
bone.
Where are the bodies for dinner?
I want my food!
Stay out the kitchen children
The cook is cleaning his gun
He just got back from the open
markey - shooting his food on
the run.
Your mama told you never
to eat your friends
with your fingers and
hands, but I say you
ought to eat what
you will - shove it
in your mouth any way
that your can.
Sharpen your teeth for the
family feast - let all the
hungry drool roll down
your chin. Hide the human
and bring out the beast.
Let all the animal games begin!
Where are the bodies for dinner?
I want my food!
You could leave to dine on
your friends - pour their
bones into a cannibal soup
muscles like steak
blood like wine - save
the brains to feed to troops
Your mama told you never
to eat your friends
with your fingers and
hands, but I say you
ought to eat what
you will - shove it
in your mouth any way
that your can.
Scarlet juices ozing
slow - boiling in a
human sea.
Is it human dinner
you're talking about?
Then slice me tender
raw and lean
Where are the bodies
for dinner?
I want my food!
Oily fingers can hardly
wait - bodies slumped
face in plate
Wake up the drunks
the coffers on
the fourteenth course
has come and gone.
So long
all day sucker
your candy has
come and gone
and its left you
with your mouth
wide open.
Just humming
Robert Hunter
Everything
Everything has come to life again
No one doubted but the ice got thin
What came too soon was so hard to keep
So full a harvest it was hard to reap
There were days
Seemed just like the walls would crumble
Shoot from the hip and pray for trouble
Stone-cold sober and seeing double
How that midnight band could ramble
Taking mansions and leaving shambles
Remember other times and places
Last night's dance
The glowing faces
All the lights the shadows in the hall
Seeking higher peaks from which to fall
Remember we were telling you
that time would stop and nations fall
Now we find the lies come true
Can you tell me, tell me, tell me
What are we to do?
Because the good old days
Those good old days are all dead and gone
Good-bye and bless them all, every one
What was true has passed the test
Just as well forget the rest
Half of what you saw was not yours to know
by Paul Kantner, Grace Slick, Joey Covington
Put your old ladies back into bed
Your old men back into their graves
Cover their ears so they can't hear us sing
Cover their eyes so that can't see us play
Get out of the way
Let the people play
We're gonna get down on you
Come alive all over you
Dancin' down into your town
Tyrannosaurus Rex was destroyed before
By a furry little ball that crawled along
The primeval jungle floor
And he stole the eggs of the dinosaur
CLOSE YOUR EYES & CREATE THE SOUND
OPEN YOUR HANDS & REBUILD THE GROUND
We are egg snatchers -
flashin' sunshine children
Diamond thieves
You unlease the dogs
of a grade-B movie star governor's war
While you sit in the dark -
insane with the fear of dying
We'll ball in your parks
- insane with the flash of living
I AM ALIVE
I AM HUMAN
I WILL BE ALIVE AGAIN
So drop your fuckin' bombs
Burn your demon babies
I WILL BE AGAIN -
The rabid lover-feelin' the starch in your grin
Callin' for acid cocaine and grass
And receiving your homemade gin
PUSH THE BUTTON
PULL THE SWITCH
CUT THE BEAM
C'MON MAKE IT MARCH
Sign me up as a diplomat - my only office is the park
You need to be out before you come in
And after you come you go
In the midst of Yang is a smaller part of Yin
And when it happens you know -
THE DAWN COMES
HEY DICK
Whatever you think of us is totally irrelevant
Both to us now and to you
We are the present
We are the future
You are the past
Pay your dues and get outta the way
'Cause we're not the way you used to be
When you were very young
We're something new
We don't quite know what it is
Or particularly care
We just do it - You gotta do it
Open your eyes there's a new world a-comin'
Open your eyes there's a new world today
Open your hearts people are lovin'
Open it all we're here to stay
Look at the wood and the way he carves it
Must have taken him years
I asked him the price and he said it was free
And I couldn't believe my ears
Tell me old man how long have you lived
To have such amazing talent
I'm twenty years short of a century
And the best years are in the balance
As a baby his mother had fed him frogs
And a wide assortment of lizards
It made him tough and wise and strange
And gave him the mind of a wizard
He had a new woman every five years
Faithful to each in her turn
They gave him children and time to smile
And he showed them all the love they could learn
The man had love to burn
Now he's lived his life and he'll live it again
Thru one more gentle soul
You'll know him by his smile and his fork held high
He'll be dining on toads and moles
Look at the wood and the way he carves it
Look at the sun, the golden harvest
What would it gain me
If I was to go?
Like Jacob of old
To the well of the world
To wax halls where candles
Burn on through the day
To light you a path
So you'd never lose your way
I was down in the valley
Where the shadows are long
The birds in the harp tree
Were singing this song
There is time to deliver
Time to receive
All that you're lacking
Of whatever you need
Turn around, by the by
You'll still see the sea
As it was in the dawning
As it always will be
Raise up your bottles
And drink down the blood
You planted the vine here
In spite of the flood
Turn an ear to the harp tree
An eye to the wall
The songs in the singing
Or nowhere at all
No where to come from
No place to retire
No shelter nowhere
Except in the fire
The birds in the harp tree
Can finish their song
Then rest in its branches
Which is where they belong
But where can a man go
That's sweet to his soul
When his time is not ready
But he's still turning old
Here's a dream for the piper
And a tune for his lady
Outside the thin wall
The waves are still raging
Here's one for the harp tree
And one for his song
One for the morning
When the night was too long
Here's one for the candle
That lights you to bed
And one for the sword
Lyrics & Music: Grace Slick
Afternoon slides in sideways
It's going down summer smooth
The man - and the water
They move me ah yes they move me
From standing too long
They both dance man & water
They both dance together
They both dance over me
They both dance lying down
Like I was making love to a flying fishman
Swim over my body with the sea in his hands
I'll have him again on Andromeda's sand
He's the son of Calaban
He's the son of Calaban
Fishman rules the ocean hand
Earth mother your children are here
High and feeling dandy
Earth mother your children are here
Ripped on coke and candy
Once the earth was a garden
It gave us all we need
Then it grew so barren
All because of greed
Once the air was for breathing
And clouds caused rain to fall
Then it filled with poisons
Strangling us all
Chorus
Water was once for drinking
And giving life to the land
Then it was used for cooling
The machinery of man
Chorus
It's not your fault you're ill now
It's the men who went before
Your children are at your side now
Don't worry anymore
Your children are your salvation
They see your life as their own
They recognize no nation
They dance around your throne
Dancing in the meadows
To the sound of a living tree
In and out of the shadows
Laughing with the breeze
What time is it, boys and girls?
It's time for the Dark Ages!
Your nightmares and traumas
can make you rich and famous
Commericals can teach you
all that you need to know
Kiss my flag
Don't look back
The past is gaining on us
Read my lips
Watch my hips
These are the Dark Ages
George Orwell's dream came true
But no one realizes
It crushed us so nicely
with so much wit and style
Entertainment might as well be
just like a rocket launcher
Too bad it's in the hands of the enemy
Nobody believes me
And so I know that I'm right
Charisma addiction gives me a deja vu
Is this like Germany in the 1930s?
Do we have to
live through the apocalypse again?
Might be the dark ages
But we're so happy
Happy to be today
You never know when you
might have to fave the censor
So I don't pretend to
want to make too much sense
Revolution on TV
in far-off distant countries
Too bad
it's just another mini-series here
Nobody believes me
And so I know that I'm right
Charisma hangover
has got to wear off soon
Could this be like Eastern Europe
in the 1990s?
Will we ever get a chance
to have perestroika here?
These are the Dark Ages
But we're so happy
Happy to be here today
Might be the Dark Ages
But we're so happy
