All too predictable violence resulting from York University's completely reckless decision to resume classes, despite being urged not to by CUPE 3903, YUFA, over 5,000 undergrads (and counting) and many departments/faculties.
Tense moments on the picket line at York University earlier today were caught on video and prompted a police investigation. A video posted on YouTube shows an angry showdown between striking members of CUPE 3903 and people trying to get on campus. Some drivers were trying to cross the picket line at one of the entrances to York. But when striking teaching assistants forced them to wait, tempers quickly flared. One of the two women shot at York University Thursday spoke exclusively the CBC's Travis Dhanraj from her hospital bed Friday night.
Transcript: Hello. I would like to provide an update on both the academic activities at York University and the current status of the labour disruption. First, we recognize the inconvenience this disruption continues to cause our students, faculty and staff. We deeply regret the impact this strike decision by CUPE 3903 is having on the entire York community, and particularly our students. Reaching fair and competitive settlements with CUPE 3903 was our goal from the outset of negotiations. As you know, we were able to achieve this with our contract faculty, who recently ratified a new three-year contract. However, Teaching Assistants and Graduate Assistants voted to reject the University's offers and remain on strike. Our aim was to have the labour disruption resolved before it became necessary to resume classes. Unfortunately, this has not been possible. As a result, we have had to make efforts to respond to our students who have been asking to resume their classes. Our students deserve certainty so they can complete their terms, plan for summer jobs and graduate on time. We began a phased resumption of classes on March 11, with more classes following on March 16 and 17. To all returning students I extend a very warm welcome back to campus. Now let me assure you, the decision to resume classes was not taken lightly. We know there are many difficulties associated with the resumption of classes. These had to be balanced with our students' concerns to complete their courses and program requirements in a timely way. We share their concerns because if prevented from returning to class, many of our students face serious and urgent consequences, including those related to accreditation and certification, placement and graduation. I understand the feelings and concerns expressed by those who prefer not to be back to class at this moment. The Senate policy regarding labour disputes continues to apply. Students who are unable or unwilling to participate in academic activities because of the strike have numerous entitlements including immunity from penalty and reasonable access to materials. If a student is not willing or able to come to campus during the disruption, there is detailed information on our website that they are encouraged to review. As classes resume, the safety and well-being of all members of the York community is our primary concern. Tensions may arise as a result of the picket lines. I urge the University community to show calm and civil conduct at all times, and to demonstrate vigilance, cooperation and patience in entering and exiting our campuses. We value the contributions of our teaching assistants and graduate assistants. We believe this is reflected in our ongoing commitment to provide one of the highest levels of graduate support in Canada. We remain in contact with the provincially appointed mediator, who will advise us when there is a basis to resume negotiations. We continue to believe a settlement is readily achievable, and we look forward to resuming negotiations and to an end to the labour disruption.
Here's an overview of Canada's interdisciplinary university, its people and what it offers.

Our recent week in New York City was an action-packed one. We decided to set ourselves a challenge to see and do as much as we possibly could, and that gave way to this travel video guide which highlights 50 of the top attractions. In a city like New York this means we barely scratched the surface, but hopefully this video will highlight the cornucopia of possibilities that is the Big Apple. We try our best to cover all of the top attractions including fine arts, entertainment, festivals, dining, architecture and museums as well as focusing on lesser known off the beaten path attractions to cover all forms of tourism. If you only have time to visit only one city in the United States it ought to be NYC, USA: http://nomadicsamuel.com/photo-essays/50-things-to-do-in-new-york-city 50 Things to do in New York City Top Attractions Travel Guide: 1 Grand Central Terminal 2 The High Line 3 Meatpacking District 4 Greenwich Village 5 Brooklyn Bridge 6 Williamsburg 7 Street Art in Williamsburg 8 Prospect Park 9 Dumbo 10 New York Style Pizza 11 Bryant Park 12 New York Public Library 13 Staten Island Ferry 14 Statue of Liberty 15 Battery Park 16 Little Italy 17 Little Korea 18 Chinatown 19 Coney Island 20 Mermaid Parade 21 The Cloisters 22 Harlem's Apollo Theatre 23 Soul Food in Harlem at Sylvia's 24 World Trade Center Memorial 25 Trinity Church 26 Wall Street 27 Lincoln Center 28 Ride a Bicycle 29 Watch a New York Yankees baseball game at Yankee Stadium 30 MET Museum (Metropolitan Museum of Art) 31 Flatiron Building 32 Washington Square Park 33 NYU (New York University) 34 National Museum of the American Indian 35 Museum of Natural History 36 Times Square 37 MOMA (Museum of Modern Art) 38 Roosevelt Island Tramway 39 Fifth Avenue Shopping 40 Rockefeller Center 41 Empire State Building 42 Carnegie Hall 43 Central Park 44 Strawberry Fields 45 Street Food 46 Catch a Broadway Theatre Performance 47 Madison Square Garden 48 African Burial Ground 49 Columbus Circle 50 Take the Subway Metro Most journeys begin at Penn Station or Grand Central, and if you arrive at the later you'll be wowed by the building. The Meatpacking District was once home to markets, slaughterhouses, and packaging plants, but times have changed. Today you'll find a mixture of trendy restaurants, clubs and boutiques. The Village used to be a bohemian neighborhood that drew artists and musicians, but today you're more likely to find upper middle class families living here. Completed in 1883, Brooklyn Bridge is one of the oldest suspension bridges in the United States. Williamsburg has become popular given its lower rent prices. University students and young professionals have been flocking to this part of town. You can walk along the riverfront for a great view of the Brooklyn and Manhattan Bridges and the Manhattan skyline. During the summer months, Bryant Park also becomes a popular hangout spot people looking to relax and even work on their tans. The Staten Island Ferry is free of charge and this makes it really popular with visitors who want to catch a glimpse of the Statue of Liberty from a distance. Battery Park is located on the southern tip of Manhattan. Having both lived in South Korea, we were thrilled to come across Manhattan's own Little Korea. Coney Island is all about good old fashioned fun. You can ride roller coasters, stroll down the boardwalk, enjoy some beach time, and then head over the Nathan's Famous hot dogs. The Cloisters will make you feel like you've travelled over to Europe. Central Park is massive and there are so many places to visit within its boundaries. We managed to visit Belvedere Castle, the Great Lawn, Shakespeare Garden, The Ramble, The Jackie Onassis Reservoir, the Alice in Wonderland Statue, and we still left feeling like we barely scratched the surface. Strawberry Fields is a section of Central Park dedicated to the memory of John Lennon. And that concludes a look at our very busy week in New York City. I'm still shocked we managed to cover so many attractions, but the great thing about this city is that distances aren't very long and there's always something really cool worth checking out around each corner. Have you been to New York? What are your favorite things about this city? Feel free to share your thoughts in the comments section below. Travel video about destination New York in the United States of America. New York is capital city of the American Dream, with its population drawn from each corner of the world. The Empire State Building is a symbol of the glamour and fascination of this frenetic city, yet the Chrysler building is just as imposing, its unusual tower being decorated with car motifs such as bonnets, hub caps and car wheels of the 1930‘s. Wall Street derived its name from a wall which had been erected to protect the emerging town from attack by Native American Indians and now most of the city is an open powerhouse of ceaseless activity with a constant mêlée of car horns, sirens, and screeching tyres.Greenwich Village is one of the few areas of the city that has no clearly-defined symmetry. Attractive steps grace many of its 19th century houses of red brick and brown sandstone and, until the 1960‘s, many important artists and authors lived there, such as Edgar Allen Poe and Henry James. Little Italy, Chinatown, The Brooklyn Bridge, Central Park, Ellis Island, The Statue of Liberty, Broadway, Times Square…each has its own colourful stories to tell amid the fantastic man-made Manhattan glass horizons: the skyscrapers which shamelessly reach up to the heavens and exclaim that New York is most assuredly the commercial capital of the universe.

Take a tour of Nubble Lighthouse in Maine, United States -- part of the World's Greatest Attractions series by GeoBeats. Sitting atop an islet on lush green grass and lovely landscape is The Nubble Lighthouse. Officially known by many as Cape Neddick Lighthouse, this beautiful yet simple structure is considered by many to be exemplary lighthouse. The tower, made of cast-iron and lined with red-brick, is approximately 41 feet in height. In 1874 Congress approved the 15,000 dollars it would take to build this lighthouse. A photograph of this lighthouse was even put in the Voyager Spacecraft, whose mission is to provide information about our world to any possible extra-terrestrials. Set amid the deep blue waters of the Atlantic Ocean on a small yet enchanting island with a pleasant coastline, this charming lighthouse is surely picture-perfect.

We decided to take on the ultimate Australian 4WD adventure and head up Queenslands Cape York Peninsula to Australias most northern point. There are a number of ways you can tackle this drive experience. You can take on the OTT or OTL (Old Telegraph line track) where you will experience the great remote wilderness of Australia. This track starts at Bramwell junction and finishes at the Jardine River. There are two bypass roads that allow travellers to get from the Peninsula Development Road to The Tip without having to navigate all of the creek crossings and rough roads. They pass mainly through the highlands to the east and west of the route, and are heavily corrugated which makes for a rough drive. If you decide to take on the challenge of the OTT there are a number of creek crossings along the way, some more challenging than others. Along the way the track reconnects with the Bypass road so you can bypass some of the more challenging crossings if need be. Palm creek, Gunshot, cockatoo creek are some of the more challenging crossings we take on, however there is some pretty spectacular places you will come across on the track like the beautiful elliot falls, twin falls and fruit bat falls all of which provide a great place to cool of or camp for the night. CUPE 3903/3902 Rally Demand a quality education for all! Why: Better public funding for an accessible education and good working conditions in universities Where: Dundas Square (TTC: Dundas) When: Saturday, March 21 at 1:00 p.m. (march will begin at 1:30 p.m.) All undergraduates and Toronto residents are invited to march in solidarity with teaching assistants (TAs), Course Instructors (CIs) and graduate assistants (GAs) from York University and the University of Toronto. TAs, CIs and GAs are not only workers, but also graduate students. There are several demands being made by unions in both universities, and they all come down to providing an equitable, accessible and affordable learning and working experience. This solidarity rally aims to defend the accessibility of graduate studies, but also to demand better public funding of universities for all students. This means that tuition fees should also be lower for all students, including for undergraduates. As has been mentioned in the comments below, March 21st is also the International Day for the Elimination of Racial Discrimination. It is important to consider the interlinkages between racial discrimination and access to education. Individual cases of racial discrimination are often linked to broader societal discrimination stemming from histories of colonialism, slavery, and segregation. The current forms of societal discrimination still serve to impoverish racialized people and indigenous people, as many distribution of wealth studies can attest. The increased privatization of higher education will mean that only those who can afford to pay the costs will be able to go, reinforcing cycles of poverty and racial discrimination. Fighting for an affordable and accessible education is one of many ways of moving towards a world free of racial discrimination. An invitation from : CUPE 3903 (York University) CUPE 3902 (University of Toronto) This rally is endorsed by : CUPE 3904 (Ryerson Unversity) CUPE 3908 (Trent University) CUPE-Ontario Ontario Federation of Labor Toronto & York Region Labour Council Canadian Federation of Students - Ontario United Steelworkers - Toronto Area OPIRG York Service Employees International Union for more info about the strike please visit http://3903.cupe.ca/ please follow us on twitter @3903picketline

JJ Knox Covers fourfive seconds Talking about the recent york university strike
On Tuesday, March 3, 2015, the OFL President Sid Ryan and Executive Vice-President Irwin Nanda joined CUPE 3903 members on the first day of their strike at York University.
As of Tuesday March 3rd, our University is now experiencing a labour disruption by one of our unions, CUPE 3903, representing Teaching Assistants, contract faculty and Graduate Assistants. The strike is unfortunate. It impacts the entire York community, particularly our students. I know that students and their parents are very concerned – I share their concerns. Let me assure you that every reasonable effort was made by the University to avoid this labour disruption. We believe a settlement is readily achievable, and we look forward to resuming negotiations. While we face the same fiscal challenges as other institutions in the broader public and university sector, York University has not sought concessions, roll-backs or net zero compensation increases. In fact, the compensation and other collective agreement improvements we are offering are highly competitive with recent settlements elsewhere. Moreover, York already leads the postsecondary education sector in a variety of bargaining areas. To provide clarity to our students, for the duration of the strike, we have regrettably suspended classes, with limited exceptions. However, all York facilities, including libraries, residences, computer labs, cafeterias, athletic facilities and offices will remain open during their usual operating hours. The University remains committed to returning to normal operations as quickly as possible so that students can complete their courses and program requirements in as timely a way as possible. We value our relationship with CUPE 3903. I am confident that, when we return to the bargaining table, we will reach a fair and competitive settlement, which will enable us all to get back to our priority of providing the best possible learning environment for our students. Mamdouh Shoukri President and Vice-Chancellor

BBC News 2015-04-14York (local i/ˈjɔːk/) is a walled city, situated at the confluence of the Rivers Ouse and Foss in North Yorkshire, England. The city has a rich heritage and has provided the backdrop to major political events throughout much of its two millennia of existence. The city offers a wealth of historic attractions, of which York Minster is the most prominent, and a variety of cultural and sporting activities.
The city was founded by the Romans in 71 AD, under the name of Eboracum. It became in turn the capital of the Roman province of Britannia Inferior, and of the kingdoms of Northumbria and Jorvik. In the Middle Ages, York grew as a major wool trading centre and became the capital of the northern ecclesiastical province of the Church of England, a role it has retained.
In the 19th century York became a hub of the railway network and a confectionery manufacturing centre. In recent decades, the economy of York has moved from being dominated by its confectionery and railway-related industries to one that provides services. The University of York and health services have become major employers, whilst tourism has become an important element of the local economy.
