Documentary made in 2004 about the Mapuche people in Chile, their struggle for land rights and the terrorist law which is, eight years later, still applied to them.
The Mapuche people are the largest ethnic group in Chile and constitute approximately 10% (more than 1.000.000 people) of the Chilean population. Half of them live in the south of Chile from the river Bio Bio until the Chiloe Island. The other half is found in and around the capital, Santiago. There are also around 300.000 Mapuches living in Argentina. The Mapuche people call themselves differently according to where they live, for example the Huilliche, people from the south, the Lafkenche, people from the west or the Nagche, people of the valley. Pehuenches, people of the pehuen tree (auracaria) area, is one part of the Mapuche people, who live in the Andes and alongside the Bio Bio River.
Today the situation of the Mapuches in Chile is still vulnerable. Chile is a strongly pronounced class society where the Mapuches belong to the lowest class. All through history, the State and the Church have carried on strategies to assimilate the Mapuches into the Chilean society. During the Pinochet era, all Mapuche land was privatised and to a large extent sold out to wealthy landlords and foreigners. Pinochet also introduced new laws, which declared that there were "no indigenous people in Chile, only Chileans". The loss of a large quantity of their land resulted in migration to the big cities. Mapuches who move to the cities soon forget their culture in order to be able to get a place in the society. They face difficulties in getting jobs, education and are less paid than their Chilean colleagues. It is not an uncommon phenomenon to change a Mapuche name into a Chilean, and avoid passing on Mapudungun to the children, in order to get a chance to climb the social ladder.
The last years'governments in Chile have taken another standpoint towards the indigenous people. In 1993 the Indigenous Act, Ley Indigena (no 19.253), was introduced, which will provide protection, promotion and development of the indigenous groups in Chile. With this law the indigenous cannot be forced to move from their land. If the Government or a company wants to move indigenous from one place to another, they have to offer a piece of equal land. This is called the permuta. If the owner does not accept the permuta, no transfer can take place. According to the law, if only one single person does not agree, there cannot be an agreement.
Besides establishing the Indigenous Act, CONADI (Corporacion Nacional de Desarollo Indigena) was formed. It is a state authority, with both Chilean and indigenous representatives, which task is to control that the cultural development of indigenous people is protected, provided and respected. Its duty is also to conserve Mapuche land, so that it is being used in a proper way, that will say maintain an ecological balance. For the first time in Chiles history, it is officially accepted that Chile is a multi-ethnic society.
At the same time however, Chile has a high pressure to develop fast according to the neo-liberal model. Large-scale development projects, which were initiated during the Pinochet era, go on today. There are roads being built through Mapuche areas, the forest is being felled in at fast speed and big power plants are being constructed in the rivers. When it comes to these large-scale projects the Mapuches still feel infringed on their historical and cultural rights.

Che Guevara is considered by many to be a hero and savior of the people, but in this video we take a look at his darker, more sinister side.
Ernesto Guevara, or, Che Guevara as we know him was born not on June 14th 1928 as his birth certificate states, but the previous month, May 14th 1928. His parents had his certificate date changed as they weren't married when Ernesto was conceived so they hid this fact to protect themselves from criticism.
In 1948 Che the entered the University of Buenos Aires to study medicine. In 1950 he decided to substitute his college pursuits with two motorcycle trips through the rural areas of Northern Argentina and most of South America. These excursions ended up vastly changing his view of politics, himself, and the world around him.
After he returned to Argentina he completed the rest of his college studies and received his medical degree in June 1953. After graduation he set out from Argentina again, which began his new stage in life as a fighter and leader in the Cuban revolution.
Contrary to those that sport Che shirts, he wasn't fighting for cultural change, but for a traditional Marxist Communists revolution. He didn't care about personal freedoms and rights, in fact Che went as far to say that he wanted "Individualism to disappear from the nation" and that "it is a criminal act to think of individuals". Yes, the government that Che helped overthrow was very bad, but he was just replacing it with another form that would censor and regulate it's citizens and withhold their rights.
It was during this time that Che took on the name, Che. It's a Spanish interjection equivalent of the American "dude", or British "mate" used in Argentina and Uruguay.
After the Batista regime collapsed, Castro put Che in charge of La Cabaña prison supervising executions. Che executed as many as 2,000 people while in command, and was given the name "butcher of La Cabana". Not only low ranking enemy combatants but also people he suspected as "spies", personal enemies, and deserters were all given swift trials, and then executed, many by Che himself.
The youth of today sport Che's image on t-shirts as a sign of rebellion, freedom, or revolution against the system. What they don't understand is that the very ideas they uphold are part of the system that Che wanted to abolish. By the mid '60s the crime of listening to rock and jazz or effeminate behavior got thousands of youths yanked off Cuba's streets and parks by secret police and dumped in prison camps with "Work Will Make Men Out of You" in bold letters above the gate and with machine gunners posted on the watchtowers.
"Youth must refrain from ungrateful questioning of governmental mandates" commanded Guevara. "Instead, they must dedicate themselves to study, work, and military service." And woe to those youths "who stayed up late at night and thus reported to work tardily."
"Youth," wrote Guevara, "should learn to think and act as a mass." "Those who chose their own path" were denounced as worthless "delinquents."
One of the ironies of the legacy of Che Guevara is that it's the face of a communists leader that is used to sell t-shirts in capitalist America. You can pretty much divide those who wear his shirts into two groups, people who know who Che Guevara was and what he did and are actually communists, and the other group; middle class teenage "rebels" that Che would have shot or imprisoned.
After years of fighting, Che surrendered and was captured on October 8th, 1967 in Bolivia. Contrary to traditional lore, he was armed, and still had a full clip in his gun when he surrendered.
Che was executed the next day, on October 9th, 1967.
With his hippie hair and revolutionary beard, Che is the perfect icon for the 60s mentality, if only those who glorify him today would see through the fog and realize what a monster he was.
So ends the history of Ernesto Che Guevara.

Two dogs waiting patiently to get served in "restaurant", and in spite of waiting, never get anything to drink.
This video has had many positive comments - thanks to all of you. Some people though are worried for the dogs - were they forced and did they hurt themselves on the forks?
Firstly the dogs loved it - they are best friends and really like getting all the attention. We practiced with the cutlery in advance, and both dogs very quickly figured it out. Besides the "waitress" kept on talking to them and encouraging them. They are very well behaved, and know when to sit still, take it slow and wait. This video was shot in one take, no cuts or editing - and both dogs had a wonderful time..The hand coordination was not preplanned - since everything was up to the dogs - but we both intuitively acted on the feeling of the dogs movement, plus we could hear from the "waitresses" comments, what the dogs were doing.

The Che people (Chinese: 輋民 or 輋族) are a branch of the Yao people found in the Guangdong and Jiangxi provinces of China. Outside of those areas, they are also known as the She people.
The Che people are some of the earliest known settlers of Guangdong; they are thought to have originally settled along the shallow shore for easier fishing access during the Neolithic era. Eventually, after an influx of Yuet people moved south during the Warring States Period, serious competition between the two peoples for resources developed.
From the time of the Qin dynasty on, waves of migrants from northern China have had a serious impact on the Che people. Because they possessed superior tools and technology, these migrants were able to displace the Che and occupy the better land for farming. As a result of this some of the Che were forced to relocate into the hilly areas of the Jiangxi and Fujian provinces.
Following this relocation, the Che people became hillside farmers. Their methods of farming included burning grasses on the slope, casting rice seeds on those embers and then harvesting the produce following the growth season. Some of the Che people also participated in the production and trade of salt, obtained from the evaporation of local pools of salt water.

The term black people is used in some socially-based systems of racial classification for humans of a dark-skinned phenotype, relative to other racial groups represented in a particular social context. Different societies apply different criteria regarding who is classified as "black", and often social variables such as class and socio-economic status also play a role, so that relatively dark-skinned people can be classified as white if they fulfill other social criteria of "whiteness" and relatively light-skinned people can be classified as black if they fulfill the social criteria for "blackness" in a particular setting.
As a biological phenotype being "black" is often associated with the very dark skin colors of some people who are classified as "black". But, particularly in the United States, the racial or ethnic classification also refers to people with all possible kinds of skin pigmentation from the darkest through to the very lightest skin colors, including albinos, if they are believed by others to have African ancestry, or to exhibit cultural traits associated with being "African-American". Ernesto "Che" Guevara (Spanish pronunciation: [ˈtʃe ɣeˈβaɾa]; June 14, 1928 – October 9, 1967), commonly known as el Che or simply Che, was an Argentine Marxist revolutionary, physician, author, intellectual, guerrilla leader, diplomat, and military theorist. A major figure of the Cuban Revolution, his stylized visage has become a ubiquitous countercultural symbol of rebellion and global insignia within popular culture.
As a young medical student, Guevara traveled throughout Latin America and was radically transformed by the endemic poverty and alienation he witnessed. His experiences and observations during these trips led him to conclude that the region's ingrained economic inequalities were an intrinsic result of capitalism, monopolism, neocolonialism, and imperialism, with the only remedy being world revolution. This belief prompted his involvement in Guatemala's social reforms under President Jacobo Arbenz, whose eventual CIA-assisted overthrow solidified Guevara's political ideology. Later, while living in Mexico City, he met Raúl and Fidel Castro, joined their 26th of July Movement, and sailed to Cuba aboard the yacht, Granma, with the intention of overthrowing U.S.-backed Cuban dictator Fulgencio Batista. Guevara soon rose to prominence among the insurgents, was promoted to second-in-command, and played a pivotal role in the victorious two-year guerrilla campaign that deposed the Batista regime.

Firstly the dogs loved it - they are best friends and really like getting all the attention. We practiced with the cutlery in advance, and both dogs very quickly figured it out. Besides the "waitress" kept on talking to them and encouraging them. They are very well behaved, and know when to sit still, take it slow and wait. This video was shot in one take, no cuts or editing - and both dogs had a wonderful time..The hand coordination was not preplanned - since everything was up to the dogs - but we both intuitively acted on the feeling of the dogs movement, plus we could hear from the "waitresses" comments, what the dogs were doing. The Mapuche people are the largest ethnic group in Chile and constitute approximately 10% (more than 1.000.000 people) of the Chilean population. Half of them live in the south of Chile from the river Bio Bio until the Chiloe Island. The other half is found in and around the capital, Santiago. There are also around 300.000 Mapuches living in Argentina. The Mapuche people are the largest ethnic group in Chile and constitute approximately 10% (more than 1.000.000 people) of the Chilean population. Half of them live in the south of Chile from the river Bio Bio until the Chiloe Island. The other half is found in and around the capital, Santiago. There are also around 300.000 Mapuches living in Argentina. The Mapuche people call themselves differently according to where they live, for example the Huilliche, people from the south, the Lafkenche, people from the west or the Nagche, people of the valley. Pehuenches, people of the pehuen tree (auracaria) area, is one part of the Mapuche people, who live in the Andes and alongside the Bio Bio River.
Today the situation of the Mapuches in Chile is still vulnerable. Chile is a strongly pronounced class society where the Mapuches belong to the lowest class. All through history, the State and the Church have carried on strategies to assimilate the Mapuches into the Chilean society. During the Pinochet era, all Mapuche land was privatised and to a large extent sold out to wealthy landlords and foreigners. Pinochet also introduced new laws, which declared that there were "no indigenous people in Chile, only Chileans". The loss of a large quantity of their land resulted in migration to the big cities. Mapuches who move to the cities soon forget their culture in order to be able to get a place in the society. They face difficulties in getting jobs, education and are less paid than their Chilean colleagues. It is not an uncommon phenomenon to change a Mapuche name into a Chilean, and avoid passing on Mapudungun to the children, in order to get a chance to climb the social ladder.
The last years'governments in Chile have taken another standpoint towards the indigenous people. In 1993 the Indigenous Act, Ley Indigena (no 19.253), was introduced, which will provide protection, promotion and development of the indigenous groups in Chile. With this law the indigenous cannot be forced to move from their land. If the Government or a company wants to move indigenous from one place to another, they have to offer a piece of equal land. This is called the permuta. If the owner does not accept the permuta, no transfer can take place. According to the law, if only one single person does not agree, there cannot be an agreement.
Besides establishing the Indigenous Act, CONADI (Corporacion Nacional de Desarollo Indigena) was formed. It is a state authority, with both Chilean and indigenous representatives, which task is to control that the cultural development of indigenous people is protected, provided and respected. Its duty is also to conserve Mapuche land, so that it is being used in a proper way, that will say maintain an ecological balance. For the first time in Chiles history, it is officially accepted that Chile is a multi-ethnic society.
At the same time however, Chile has a high pressure to develop fast according to the neo-liberal model. Large-scale development projects, which were initiated during the Pinochet era, go on today. There are roads being built through Mapuche areas, the forest is being felled in at fast speed and big power plants are being constructed in the rivers. When it comes to these large-scale projects the Mapuches still feel infringed on their historical and cultural rights.

Che Guevara is considered by many to be a hero and savior of the people, but in this video we take a look at his darker, more sinister side.
Ernesto Guevara, or, Che Guevara as we know him was born not on June 14th 1928 as his birth certificate states, but the previous month, May 14th 1928. His parents had his certificate date changed as they weren't married when Ernesto was conceived so they hid this fact to protect themselves from criticism.
In 1948 Che the entered the University of Buenos Aires to study medicine. In 1950 he decided to substitute his college pursuits with two motorcycle trips through the rural areas of Northern Argentina and most of South America. These excursions ended up vastly changing his view of politics, himself, and the world around him.
After he returned to Argentina he completed the rest of his college studies and received his medical degree in June 1953. After graduation he set out from Argentina again, which began his new stage in life as a fighter and leader in the Cuban revolution.
Contrary to those that sport Che shirts, he wasn't fighting for cultural change, but for a traditional Marxist Communists revolution. He didn't care about personal freedoms and rights, in fact Che went as far to say that he wanted "Individualism to disappear from the nation" and that "it is a criminal act to think of individuals". Yes, the government that Che helped overthrow was very bad, but he was just replacing it with another form that would censor and regulate it's citizens and withhold their rights.
It was during this time that Che took on the name, Che. It's a Spanish interjection equivalent of the American "dude", or British "mate" used in Argentina and Uruguay.
After the Batista regime collapsed, Castro put Che in charge of La Cabaña prison supervising executions. Che executed as many as 2,000 people while in command, and was given the name "butcher of La Cabana". Not only low ranking enemy combatants but also people he suspected as "spies", personal enemies, and deserters were all given swift trials, and then executed, many by Che himself.
The youth of today sport Che's image on t-shirts as a sign of rebellion, freedom, or revolution against the system. What they don't understand is that the very ideas they uphold are part of the system that Che wanted to abolish. By the mid '60s the crime of listening to rock and jazz or effeminate behavior got thousands of youths yanked off Cuba's streets and parks by secret police and dumped in prison camps with "Work Will Make Men Out of You" in bold letters above the gate and with machine gunners posted on the watchtowers.
"Youth must refrain from ungrateful questioning of governmental mandates" commanded Guevara. "Instead, they must dedicate themselves to study, work, and military service." And woe to those youths "who stayed up late at night and thus reported to work tardily."
"Youth," wrote Guevara, "should learn to think and act as a mass." "Those who chose their own path" were denounced as worthless "delinquents."
One of the ironies of the legacy of Che Guevara is that it's the face of a communists leader that is used to sell t-shirts in capitalist America. You can pretty much divide those who wear his shirts into two groups, people who know who Che Guevara was and what he did and are actually communists, and the other group; middle class teenage "rebels" that Che would have shot or imprisoned.
After years of fighting, Che surrendered and was captured on October 8th, 1967 in Bolivia. Contrary to traditional lore, he was armed, and still had a full clip in his gun when he surrendered.
Che was executed the next day, on October 9th, 1967.
With his hippie hair and revolutionary beard, Che is the perfect icon for the 60s mentality, if only those who glorify him today would see through the fog and realize what a monster he was.

The small dog is a Yellow Labrador and the other a "Broholmer" - an old Danish breed. Apologies for the wrong breed description in the final credits.
Two dogs waiting patiently to get served in "restaurant", and in spite of waiting, never get anything to drink.
This video has had many positive comments - thanks to all of you. Some people though are worried for the dogs - were they forced and did they hurt themselves on the forks?
Firstly the dogs loved it - they are best friends and really like getting all the attention. We practiced with the cutlery in advance, and both dogs very quickly figured it out. Besides the "waitress" kept on talking to them and encouraging them. They are very well behaved, and know when to sit still, take it slow and wait. This video was shot in one take, no cuts or editing - and both dogs had a wonderful time..The hand coordination was not preplanned - since everything was up to the dogs - but we both intuitively acted on the feeling of the dogs movement, plus we could hear from the "waitresses" comments, what the dogs were doing.
