The foreign ministers of China, Japan and South Korea are meeting for their first talks in three years. The meeting in Seoul is likely to focus on ways to ease regional tensions over territorial and diplomatic disputes. The three states have strong economic ties but relations still suffer from unresolved issues dating back to Japan's actions in World War Two. A Chinese foreign ministry spokesman said he hoped the ministers would be able to "look forward into the future". South Korea's Yun Byung-se welcomed Japan's Fumio Kishida and China's Wang Yi to South Korea's capital on Saturday. Foreign ministers from the three countries last met in April 2012, for their sixth annual trilateral meeting. It was cancelled the following year after Japanese Prime Minister Shinzo Abe angered China and South Korea by visiting a shrine that honours Japan's war dead, including a number of senior war criminals. Japan colonised the Korean peninsula and occupied parts of China during World War Two and both countries have accused Tokyo of failing to adequately atone for its aggression. Mr Kishida met his South Korean counterpart ahead of the trilateral meeting, and said that "despite difficult issues between the two countries", the two sides would "continue communicating at various levels in order to strengthen our co-operation". (CNN)U.S. Ambassador to South Korea Mark Lippert was attacked in Seoul, possibly by more than one person, according to U.S. government sources in the U.S. and South Korea. He is in stable condition, according to a U.S. embassy spokesperson. Lippert was injured by a small razor blade, according to Seoul police. His injuries are not life threatening, according to Marie Harf, a State Department spokeswoman. He received injuries on his right cheek and hand at about 5.42 p.m. ET, according to South Korean police. The President called U.S. Ambassador to the Republic of Korea, Mark Lippert, to tell him that he and his wife Robyn are in his thoughts and prayers, and to wish him the very best for a speedy recovery," said Bernadette Meehan, National Security Council spokesperson. READ: Canadian pastor reported missing after trip to North Korea According to South Korea's YTN news channel, Lippert was about to deliver a speech at a breakfast being held at Sejong Hall in Seoul. The report says nothing specific about the attack, only that yelling was heard and then the bloodied ambassador was taken to hospital. The YTN report also says a suspect identified by last name "Kim" was detained. The suspect -- believed to be in his 50s -- is detained and currently under investigation. Lippert has been a confidant of President Barack Obama ever since he arrived in the Senate in 2005. Lippert worked with Obama on the Senate Foreign Relations Committee and traveled the world with the senator as he garnered the foreign policy experience that helped pave the way for his presidential campaign. When Obama declared he would run for president in the 2008 race, Lippert was by his side again, and was on the road with the candidate and ultimately served as the chief foreign policy adviser for the Obama campaign. In 2007, Lippert was deployed as a Naval Reserve Lieutenant to Iraq to work as an intelligence officer with Navy SEALS. In a Wall Street Journal story that year, Lippert was profiled while he was in Iraq in a story which included an anecdote about him receiving an email on his Blackberry from then-Sen. Obama which read, "I miss you, brother." Lippert's deployment was not without irony, because he was in Iraq at a time when his boss was actively campaigning against what he said was a "dumb war." After his deployment, Lippert returned to Washington and served as deputy national security adviser and the chief of staff for the National Security Council in the Obama White House. In October 2009, however, he decided to return to active duty. He was deployed to Afghanistan and he also served as an intelligence officer for the Naval Special Warfare Development Group in Virginia Beach. "He is a close friend, and I admire and respect his devotion to our country and answering the call to active duty service," Obama said in a statement at the time. Lippert was nominated to be the top Asia policy official in the Pentagon in 2011 amid stories that he had clashed while on the NSC with former national security adviser, retired Gen. James Jones, which were reported in Bob Woodward's book "Obama's Wars." Woodward wrote that Jones resented Lippert and another former Senate aide Denis McDonough, who later was to become White House chief of staff, referring to them as part of the "politburo" who he thought thwarted the effective framing of policy. Woodward reported in the book that Obama affectionately referred to the two close aides by the Doctor Seuss nickname of "Thing One and Thing Two." Last year, Obama nominated Lippert to serve as ambassador to South Korea.SEOUL, South Korea — The American ambassador to South Korea, Mark W. Lippert, was taken to a hospital on Thursday after a South Korean assailant protesting joint American-South Korean military exercises attacked him with a knife, according to South Korean journalists and officials who were at the scene. Mr. Lippert was in stable condition with bleeding on the right side of his face, they added. South Korean news websites carried photos of Mr. Lippert walking to a car to be taken to a hospital. He was covering the injury with his hand, and his shirt was splattered with blood. The assailant was apprehended at the scene and taken into the custody of the South Korean police. Before he was taken away, the attacker, who identified himself as Kim Ki-jong, told South Korean reporters that he had attacked Mr. Lippert to protest the annual joint military exercises that the United States started this week with South Korea. Some left-leaning activists in South Korea have criticized the annual military exercises, saying that they raise tensions with North Korea and hamper efforts to build reconciliation on the divided Korean Peninsula. North Korea also condemned the exercises as a rehearsal for invasion, though both Washington and Seoul said the drills were defensive in nature.

A militant Korean nationalist has slashed the face of the US ambassador to South Korea at a breakfast meeting in Seoul, but the envoy was not seriously hurt. Mark Lippert, 42, was also cut on his left hand, with blood spattered over the breakfast table. Security officers subdued the attacker, one pinning him down with a shoe on his neck, until he was arrested. North Korea has described the attack as "just punishment for US warmongers". The North's Korean Central News Agency (KCNA) said he had delivered a "knife shower of justice". The attacker, named as Kim Ki-jong, 55, appears to have broken his ankle during the attack and was taken away on an ambulance trolley after questioning. South Korean police, who are in the process of obtaining warrants to search his home, are seeking to establish whether he has close ties with the North, the BBC's Stephen Evans reports from Seoul. Mr Lippert had hospital treatment but later wrote in a tweet: "Doing well and in great spirits... Will be back ASAP to advance US-ROK [Republic of Korea] alliance!" US President Barack Obama called his ambassador to wish him "the very best for a speedy recovery", a US official said. The ritual, in which the 60ft (18m) tower was covered in colourful lights and topped with a cross, was seen by the North as propaganda by the South. The North repeatedly demanded its demolition and threatened to shell it. The move came a week after senior military officials from the two Koreas held talks for the first time in seven years. The BBC's Stephen Evans in Seoul says the South's decision to finally scrap the tower could be seen as a gesture to the North that provocation needs to be toned down. Two weeks ago, the two countries briefly exchanged gun fire across their land border, in a rare incident. Gunfire was also exchanged recently when a North Korean patrol ship crossed the disputed western maritime border. The tower, which stood about 3km (2 miles) from the border, could be seen by North Koreans living in nearby towns. Citing a defence official, South Korea's Yonhap news agency said the tower, built in 1971, was being removed because it could collapse. abc breaking news, bbc, bbc football, bbc iplayer, bbc news, bbc news america, bbc persian, bbc sport, bbc weather, bbc world news, breaking celebrity news, breaking election news, breaking late news, breaking local news, breaking music news, breaking news, breaking news alerts, breaking news canada, breaking news headlines, breaking news in atlanta, breaking news in nigeria, breaking news india, breaking news pensacola florida, breaking news plane crash, breaking news story, breaking sports news, business expensive news home media world, christian world news, cnn, cnn breaking news, cnn money, cnn news, cnn news breaking news, cnn news world, detroit breaking news, global news, headline, headline news, health care technology news, hot latest global news, internet technology news, las vegas breaking news, latest breaking news, latest celebrity news, latest information technology news, latest music news, latest news, latest news headlines, latest news update, latest sports news, live breaking news, local breaking news, local news today, msn breaking news, nbc breaking news, nbc world news, news of the world, news report us world, news today news, news updated daily, solar technology news, sports news today, technology news, the latest news, today news, us news and world, us news and world report, us news and world report magazine, us news and world report web site, us news world report, world news, world news daily, world news headlines

FOLLOW US: Facebook: http://facebook.com/FreedomRequiresWings Twitter: http://twitter.com/FRW More Human Rights videos: http://fdrq.ws/FRWYouTubeSub Documentary by Mark Stone, Asia Correspondent for Sky News INFO: In a series of rare and harrowing interviews, defectors have told Sky News of their horrific lives inside North Korea and their extraordinary journeys to escape the country. The men and women agreed to talk from their new homes in the South Korean capital, Seoul. Their interviews form part of a special programme to be shown on Sky News this weekend. Two of the defectors had spent time inside North Korea's notorious political prison camps. Another was a tank commander in the secretive state's army before managing to escape. One women describes, for the first time, the torture she endured at the hands of North Korean prison camp guards. From her Seoul apartment, Cheon YoungSuk sobbed uncontrollably as she recalled the torture. "With that plank, they hit me until it split into two or they won't stop hitting me. It must split into two. Then the beating stops. They hit me like that, they starved me, kicked me," she said. Lee SoonShil, a defector from North Korea who made it South Korea. "During the torture the hardest thing was they made me kneel on a chair. The guard had ridges on the bottom of his shoes. He would stand on my bare skin and start twisting (his feet). "When bare skin and shoe soles are twisted with pressure it grinds the skin. That was the most hard. That was the time I shouted. It hurt too much. "Because it hurt too much I shouted to him to grind faster. Twist faster to finish it more quickly. "They wrapped my hair on their hand and start smashing my face on the corner of the desk.... [they are] crueller than beasts. How could a human do that to another human?" On Thursday, diplomats addressed the United Nations saying that North Korea must act immediately to halt its "litany of abuses" and "crimes against humanity". "We note with concern that... human rights violations and crimes against humanity continue to take place with impunity," British UN representative Karen Pierce told the Geneva forum. North Korea denies the existence of prison camps. It reacted angrily to a United Nations Human Rights Council Commission of Inquiry (COI), published in February. The COI conducted scores of interviews with defectors all of whom told stories similar to those heard by Sky News. The UN body concluded that "systematic, widespread and gross human rights violations have been and are being committed" by North Korea. It said that "the gravity, scale and nature of these violations reveal a state that does not have any parallel in the contemporary world". It described a catalogue of "unspeakable atrocities" which amounted to "crimes against humanity". The report is currently being considered at the General Assembly of the United Nations in New York. The detailed findings of the report were also discussed at informal meeting of the UN Security Council two weeks ago. However, two members of the council, Russia and China, both historically allied to North Korea, failed to attend. The Defectors - Sky News Special Programme Speaking after the informal meeting, the chairman of the Commission of Inquiry, retired Australian judge Michael Kirby, said he was disappointed that China and Russia failed to attend but still hoped that the UN would now act against North Korea. "The time has come for effective action from the United Nations," he said. "If ever there is to be a case for referral of a matter to the International Criminal Court, it is difficult to imagine a stronger case than has been made out in the case of North Korea. "If this is not a case for such a referral, it is difficult to imagine what would be." The level of abuse uncovered in North Korea, both in the UN report and the interviews conducted by Sky News has been compared to some of the abuses during the holocaust of World War Two. Mr Kirby said that the descriptions he heard reminded him of Holocaust abuses. He said: "I never thought that in my professional life, my life as a judge or as an officer of the United Nations, I would sit there and hear descriptions that were so similar to the descriptions of what went on in those places. "I thought we had said as a world community, 'never again'. "I thought that was what the charter of the United Nations was about. I thought that was why in the charter it speaks of international peace and security and the protection of universal human rights together." Learn More » SEOUL, South Korea — President Park Geun-hye of South Korea vowed on Monday to disband her country's Coast Guard, saying that South Korea owed "reform and a great transformation" to hundreds of high school students who died in a ferry disaster last month. Bowing deeply before television cameras, Ms. Park offered a "heartfelt apology" for failing to prevent the sinking of the 6,825-ton ferry, Sewol, on April 16 and for the Coast Guard's bungling of rescue operations. "The ultimate responsibility lies with me, the president," she said. Although she had apologized a few times over the sinking, Ms. Park's nationally televised speech on Monday was her clearest expression of public contrition. As of Monday, 286 people had been confirmed dead, with 18 missing, making the episode one of the country's worst peacetime disasters. It has also developed into Ms. Park's biggest political crisis; over the weekend, the police detained more than 200 people who had tried to march on her office, calling on her to step down. "We failed to save those students who should have been saved," Ms. Park said. "I will make this an opportunity for South Korea to be born again." She promised a reorganization of her government to help it deal more efficiently with disasters. She said she would disband the Coast Guard, which she said failed to do enough to save the students. The vast majority of the dead and missing were students who were trapped in the ferry after its crew repeatedly urged them to stay put in the dangerously listing vessel. The first Coast Guard boats arriving at the scene on April 16 saved the ship's captain and other crew members deserting the ship, and made little effort to reach the trapped students.

When grocery chain Tesco wanted to expand their market share in South Korea, they came up with a brilliant idea. Because the people in South Korea work long hours they thought of an efficient way to sell their products. The Korean subsidiary Home Plus put up billboards in subway stations with their range of products, accompanied by QR, or Quick Response codes. All people had to do now is scan the QR codes with their cell phone and the groceries were delivered to their doorsteps.

When coming up with a top attractions travel guide for South Korea it became a daunting task to go through my travel video library collection of Korean videos and decide which ones to use. There is just so much to see and do in Korea from food to culture and from attractions and cities worth visiting. From Seoul to Busan and from countryside to urban city centers there is something for everyone. The following recommendation for the top things to do in South Korea: 1) Visiting Insadong Considered by many to the cultural hub of Seoul, Insadong is the perfect place to indulge in Korean street, go shopping and take in Korean traditional musical performances. It is also one of the best places for people watching as you'll notice a mix of both Koreans and foreigners. 2) Korean Folk Village The Korean Folk Village, nestled in between the cities of Suwon and Yongin, is a place you'll definitely want to check out. While wandering around he scenic premises you can snack on Korean street food delights such as sugary taffy where you'll notice traditional Korean wedding ceremonies, tightrope walking and equestrian students and performances. The best time of year to come is in the fall or spring. 3) Cat Cafes Although we've been to several cat cafes in Thailand, Malaysia and Germany we still haven't found one that tops the cat cafe we visited in Hongdae, Seoul, South Korea. Purchase an entrance ticket, which entitles you to a drink, allows you to come in and interact with the cats playing, feeding and petting them to your hearts content. 4) One of the most historic markets in all of Seoul - and Korea for that matter - is Namdaemun Market. As the largest and oldest open air market in all of Korea you'll have a chance to shop and eat Korean street food all day long. My favorite snack here is hotteok. 5) A scenic and peaceful way to experience the heart of downtown Seoul is to wander along the Cheonggyecheon. There are few places that are more attractive to go walking. When we visited in winter we noticed many ice sculptures. 6) To beat the heat in the winter, visit a traditional Korean tea house for a fragrant cup of hot fruity tea and a delicious plate of Korean rice cake snacks. 7) Not a fan of cats? Try visiting a dog cafe as an alternative. It's the same deal as the cat cafe in terms of purchasing overpriced drinks for the chance to play and interact with cute dogs and puppies. 8) Kimbap Restaurant For excellent Korean rice rolls, known as kimbap, head to one of the ubiquitous locations for some excellent kimchi fried rice, mandu and Korean soups. 9) Bamboo Park If you visit the city of Damyang, in the southern region of Korea, you'll be treated to the Damyang Bamboo Forest Park. A nice scenic escape from urban Korean life, these parks do sometimes get crowded. 10) Boseong Tea Fields and Plantation Not far from the Bamboo Forest Park is the Boseong Tea Fields. Come climb up to the very top - it's quite the workout and enjoy a cup of green tea or green tea flavored ice cream upon returning to the bottom. 11) There are a plethora of fascinating palaces and temples to explore in Seoul. Our favorite, is Gyeongbokgung Palace where admission is only 3000 Won. Pose with Korean guards and stick around for the changing of the guard. 12) If you're ready to shop until you drop be sure to visit Myeongdong, one of the most popular shopping districts in all of Seoul. Here you'll find swanky boutique shops and plenty of restaurants. 13) For the art and hipster scene be sure to visit Hongdae, the most popular student hangout area for Koreans. From food to nightlife to shopping this place has it all for young 20 somethings. 14) An alternative to Itaewon is Songtan - located nearby an American Military base in the Pyeongtaek region. This is where you'll come to buy American goods and to eat International cuisine. 15) Seoul Tower offers amazing views of the city but I enjoyed climbing Namsan even more. The climb is free and it best enjoyed on a fall or spring afternoon when the weather is cool. This is part of our Travel in Korea series. When it comes to street food in Asia, Korea reigns supreme as the true heavyweight offering up a diverse spread of delectable street snacks that range from sweet to salty and from savory to spicy. Whether you're in the mood for a small bite - or a huge feast - you'll certainly find what you're looking for at an affordable price as most Korean street food items are priced between 1000 to 4000 Korean Won. When many foreigners think of Korean cuisine the first thought that may come to mind is having Korean barbecue at a Korean restaurant; however, Korean food is so much more than that and I truly believe it is showcased in its finest form on the streets of Seoul - or any Korean city/town for that matter. Where can you get the best street food in Korea? In my opinion, the street food in Seoul is as good as it gets; however, the truth is that Korean street food can be found all over Korea - from sprawling urban center to tiny little rural village. Whether your outing is for breakfast, lunch, dinner, a snack or even a hangover cure, eating on the street is as real and authentic as it gets in South Korea. Please be sure to let me know how your experience eating Korean street food compares to other types of Asian street food and/or street food from around the world. The following is a guide to some of our favorite Korean street food bites that you'll want to try when you visit Korea for the first time: I've now traveled to over forty countries and I've yet to experience street food that can compete with Korea. Known locally as Pojangmacha, you can tantalize your taste buds with spicy, savory, salty and sweet street snacks. Two of my personal favorites include Tteokbokki (떡볶이) and Hotteok (호떡). The following is a guide to some of our favorite Korean street -- warning -- I hope you're not hunrgy while watching this. And we are going to show you the different kinds of food you can buy in this alley. So that looks pretty appetizing. What do you have there? It sure does. Well we found some food on a stick here. Different kind of battered food objects. So if you want to take a look. We've got what appears to be a rice cake, kind of a lobster roll and as we go down a bit lower sort of like a hotdog/sausage thingamajig. And this is our first little snack food of the day. It looks tasty. Let's try it. Okay, I'm going to have the rice one. Very classy! Mmmmmm. Nice. Alright, now you are up. What are you going to have? I'm going to take a bite of the hotdog. Scarf it. Mmmmm. It's nice and spicy. Is it? This is really good. Yeah. You'll have to try this one. 호떡? 얼마 죠? 1000 원입니다. Okay, so we have got a delicious treat here called Hotteok. And it's a fried kind of sweet treat. Inside it's filled with cinnamon, honey and sugary kind of goodness. You bit into it and it's really warm. Perfect for the fall or winter. So I will take the first bite here. Oh yeah. Oh yeah. That's good. Mmmmmmm....haha So we've found ourselves a nice little back-alley to enjoy it. We're going to feast on the hotteok. It's delicious. Show us how it is done. It's hot. It's hot! Oh nice! The gooey-ness. It's made of honey. Malt. M A L T. Actually honey is liquid right? We boil this for one week. We make it solid because I have to show you a performance. It's hard. This is corn flour. Make a hole. Like this. Like this. Stretch. Stretch. Little by little. I have a clump of candy in my cheek. Nice. We just bought some sticky rice taffy and it is all natural. It is very sweet. It is kind of like a chewy candy. This would appear to be ice cream in some kind of cane. Look at what we've got here. Nice. Big enough? Go take a bite of that. Take a look at this. I think it is big enough to share. Well, good. Is that the biggest ice cream you've ever had? Yeah, that is really good. If you're looking to try Korean street food Insadong (인사동) is one of your best bets in the entire country let alone Seoul. Speaking Korean. When traveling to Korea don't be afraid to sample as many Korean street food snacks as you possibly can -- your taste buds will surely be rewarded: http://nomadicsamuel.com/video-blog/korean-street-food This is part of our Travel in Korea series. In this travel video we explore Insadong traditional street (인사동) - popular with Koreans and foreigners - wandering around the traditional restaurants, arts and crafts, street food, malls and street performances. There are a lot of cultural style performances for both music and dance. We enjoyed both sunny and rainy weather during our two visits. The video captures all of the action on the busiest pedestrian street in Seoul, South Korea. 비디오 서울, 한국에서 가장 붐비는 보행자 거리에 동작을 모두 캡처합니다. http://nomadicsamuel.com : Insadong-gil is "well known as a traditional street to both locals and foreigners"[10] and represents the "culture of the past and the present".[11] It contains a mixture of historical and modern atmosphere and is a "unique area of Seoul that truly represents the cultural history of the nation."[10] The majority of the traditional buildings originally belonged to merchants and bureaucrats. Some larger residences, built for retired government officials during the Joseon period, can also be seen. Most of these older buildings are now used as restaurants or shops. Among the historically significant buildings located in the area are Unhyeongung mansion, Jogyesa - one of the most significant Korean Buddhist temples, and one of Korea's oldest Presbyterian churches.[3] 仁寺洞 The area is well known for sightseeing, with approximately 100,000 visitors on Sundays reported in 2000.[5] Insadong is also a visiting spot for foreign dignitaries such as Queen Elizabeth II and the princes of Spain and the Netherlands.[12] It contains 40 percent of the nation's antique shops and art galleries as well as 90 percent of the traditional stationery shops.[13] Particularly noteworthy is Tongmungwan,[14] the oldest bookstore in Seoul, and Kyung-in Art Gallery,[15] the oldest tea house. There are daily calligraphy demonstrations and pansori performances. Insadong is a dong, or neighborhood of the Jongno-gu district of the South Korean city of Seoul. The main street is Insadong-gil, which is connected to a multitude of alleys that lead deeper into the district.[1][2] At one time it was the largest market for antiques and artworks in Korea.[2] In area, 12.7 hectares (or 31.4 acres),[3] the district is bordered by Gwanhun-dong to the north, Nagwon-dong to the east, and Jongno 2-ga and Jeokseon-dong to the south, and Gongpyeong-dong to the west. As North Korea is becoming aware of the Korean wave, or so-called Hanryu, the socialist country is raising its guard against such capitalist mindset and culture spreading to North Korea via publications, culture, arts as well as electronic media. In this week's Bizline, we analyze the changes detected in North Korea and its background. We listen to North Korean defectors and experts what is happening in North Korea in terms of hanryu fever and through what ways it is spreading. We will also discuss if reform and opening of North Korea can accelerate with this phenomenon.

When it comes to street food Asia is without a doubt the leader in terms of top notch delectable and inexpensive bite sized delights. Prior to teaching English in South Korea, having grown up in Canada, I really didn't know what street food was all about. Over the past decade, having focused most of my time living and traveling in Asia, I've become such a huge fan of street food that I feel as though I'm being robbed whenever I visit a country or city where I'm unable to get it. When you think of street food in Asia numerous countries pop into mind. The standouts in my opinion are Korean street food, Chinese street food, Thai street food, Malaysian street food, Vietnamese street food and Taiwanese street food. The following is a travel and food guide to the best street food to be found in Asia: 1) Thai Street Food Where can you find Thai street. In a word - everywhere! Street food in Thailand is as much a part of daily life as songthaews and Buddhist monks. In this video we showcase the Saturday Night Market in Chiang Mai, Thailand where we sample numerous street food delights including twist potatoes, blueberry cheesecake ice cream, pan-fried dumplings, sausage and banana pancakes with chocolate. 2) Korean Street Food I've said it before but it is worth repeating again: "There is no place on earth that offers better street food that South Korea." Called 'pojangmacha' some of my favorites include tteokbokki and hotteok. If you're in Seoul consider checking out Insadong and Namdaemun for a diverse selection of delectable delights. 3) Macanese Street Food Friends had told us about the legendary street food in Macua. Fortunately for us we had an opportunity to try it ourselves. Some of the top highlights included egg tarts, pork chop bun, almond cakes, soy milk and Taiwanese pearl milk bubble tea. 4) Chinese Street Food Our favorite city to eat street, while traveling in China, was the night market in Yangshuo. We started off with satay, a smoky and spicy meat and then moved on to Chinese banana pancakes. Compared to other countries where I've tried banana pancakes this one compared favorably. 5) Malaysian Street Food I've visited many night markets in Asia and the Jonker Street Night Market, located in Malacca, Malaysia, is one of my all time favorites. On a hot and humid evening we had a chance to cool down with some delicious Cendol - a shaved iced dish with coconut milk, cane syrup, jellies and beans along with some refreshing sugarcane juice. 6) Singapore Street Food Singapore is by far the most expensive country in Southeast Asia to visit. Accommodation is expensive. Eating at restaurants costs a small fortune. The solution? Hawker Centres. These open air food stall complexes serve up wonderful delights from cuisine all over Asia and especially SE Asia. We were lucky enough to sample Hainanese chicken rice, butter chicken, butter naan, satay and dim sum. 7) Khmer Street Food Have you ever tried insects before? Prior to traveling in SE Asia I had yet to experience eating an insect. While in Cambodia I had the chance to devour some deep-fried crickets. Surprisingly, they were delicious - tasting similar to a potato chip. 8) More Malaysian Cuisine While wandering around in Melaka we cooled down with Cendol - this time with ice cream while munching on deep-fried banana. 9) More Thailand Cuisine Here we show you the infamous Thai banana pancake, also known as banana roti, as made from scratch Thai style. While living nearby Chiang Mai Gate we came here often to this stall for a sweet treat and for some dessert. Coming in at only 30 Baht (1 USD) it's the kind of treat where you can have more than one. 10) Thai Cuisine once again One of our favorite outdoor stalls in Chiang Mai served yellow noodles with dumplings. The wanton like dumplings were a real treat. Coming in at just over a dollar we ate here often to save money. This is our street food guide to Asia. Did you enjoy it? What are some of our favorite street foods from Asia or around the world? This is part of our Travel in Asia series. In this travel video we visit one of the most popular areas in Korea for university students, young adults and indie culture seekers in Seoul, Korea known as Hongdae -- 홍대앞. This is the first neighborhood I ever visited in Seoul, when I came on an independent journey, way back in 2004 to see -- whether or not -- I would like to teach English in South Korea after completing my University degree. It made quite an impression upon me then and it still does to this day. So much has changed in the Hongdae since I first arrived. The guest house where I met some of the first long-term backpackers I had ever encountered is no longer in operation. Many of the stores, clubs, bars and street vendors that I used to frequent have since left; however, the spirit of the area remains the same and it's as popular as ever. What can you expect to find in Hongdae? The area is full of restaurants, shops, cute cafes & vintage boutiques. It's also a great place to view artsy mural paintings. It's the kind of neighborhood where you can watch indie music being performed while having a bite for lunch at the park. If you feel a little peckish, the plethora of street food stalls that line many of the busiest streets will cover your every need. Fancy a quiet or quirky cafe? Two of my favorite cafes are located in Hongdae and it shouldn't come as a surprises that both involve animals. For those interested try visiting a cat cafe or dog cafe in the area. In this travel video we try to capture some of the hustle and bustle by taking time lapse video from several different vantage points in Hongdae: http://nomadicsamuel.com/video-blog/time-lapse-hongdae The Hongdae Area (홍대앞) is a region in Seoul, South Korea near the Hongik University, after which it is named. It is known for its urban arts and indie music culture, clubs and entertainments. The area is located in Mapo-gu in the western end of Seoul, stretching from Seogyo-dong to Hapjeong-dong. Hongdae (홍대) is an abbreviation of Hongik Daehakgyo, the Hongik University (홍익대학교). The term 'hongdae' is usually used in regards to the Hongik University which has one of the nation's top fine arts colleges in South Korea. Hongdae area is known for its indie spirit, urban street arts and underground band musicians. The area provides street art festivals and performances, as well as music concerts by independent artists and mainstream entertainers. One of the most popular areas in Korea for students to come is a place called Hongdae, which is near a university called Hongik University and several other prominent universities in Korea. What I'm going to show you now are a series of time-lapses from different places in Hongdae and you're going to get a sense of just how busy it is - how much hustle and bustle, how much shopping. Jane Wilson visits the city of Seoul in South Korea to explore the city. Seoul is the capital of Korea with over 600 years of history. It is the heart of Korea's culture and education as well as politics and economics. Seoul is home to many old historic sites like Gyeongbokgung and Changdeokgung Palaces, and places of traditional culture like Bukchon Hanok Village, Insa-dong, and Namdaemun Market. The shopping and entertainment districts of Myeongdong and Apgujeong. The center of the city offers a myriad of resting areas for citizens. Seoul is the business and cultural hub of South Korea, where skyscrapers tower over Buddhist temples. Take it all in from the N Seoul Tower, built atop a peak in Namsan Park. The teahouses and shops of Insadong give you a taste of Korean flavor, which you can further experience with a visit to the grounds and museums of Gyeongbokgung. UNESCO World Heritage Site Changdeokgung Palace is a fine example of authentic ancient architecture.
Check out my Seoul travel guide and tips at this link: http://migrationology.com/2012/05/seoul-travel-guide/ - All my personal Seoul travel tips and suggestions! Seoul, South Korea, is truly an amazing city to visit! It's modern, easy to navigate and there's little something everyone will enjoy. The Seoul subway system makes it easy to get around town and discover exactly what the giant city has to offer. Surrounded by Japan and China, Seoul and South Korea sometimes doesn't get all the attention is deserves . Korea is home to a unique culture, cuisine and a fascinating history. If you ever have the chance to visit Seoul, you'll have a great time! I traveled to Seoul Korea and was able to do all kinds of things, but I've narrowed this list down to twenty five of the best things to do in Seoul - of course there are other things as well but this list is just the beginning and intended to get your ideas and travel imagination flowing! Anyway, on to the top Seoul attractions, here's the list in case you can't see the video: 1. Gyeongbukgung Palace 2. Bukchon Hanok Village 3. Jogyesa Buddhist Temple 4. Suwon's Hwaseong Fortress 5. War Memorial and Museum 6. N Seoul Tower 7. Myeongdong Shopping 8. Insadong 9. Namdaemun Market 10. Dongdaemun 11. International Itaewon 12. Hongdae (Hongik University) 13. Lotte Mart 14. Lotte World 15. Seoul Children's Park 16. Han River Walking / Riding 17. Walk along the Cheonggyecheon Stream 18. Hike in Seoul 19. Gwangjang Market 20. Noryangjin Fish Market 21. If you get a chance to visit Seoul I hope your'e able to do all these wonderful things while you're there! Anything else you love about Seoul that's not on this list? Train travel from China to Cult Korea: Beijing-Pyongyang. May 2010. See Videos 2, 3 and 4 for the walking tour of NK. This was a propaganda tour that brings tourists to the country's showcase cities and fertile regions. These videos give people thinking about visiting NK an overview of what they will see there (A variety of tours are offered but itineraries are often similar). These videos are neither truncated nor narrated. Footage is exclusive to regions in N. Korea where the elite population resides. Therefore you will not see how the majority of N. Koreans live, with oppression, famine, lack of human rights and medical care, or the most unfortunate 150,000 political victims living in Soviet Gulag/Nazi Concentration style camps. South Korea maintains a cowardly and disturbing indifference to the large scale atrocities occurring in North Korea. In the 60 years since the division of the Korean Peninsula, South Korweakens have lost their sense of unity and urgency. S. Korea has overwhelming military and non-military options if it wanted the Northern regime to collapse. It does not need to wait forever on the the vastly useless and toothless UN to solve South Korea's problem. Yet, the SK government and inhabitants are shockingly content with maintaining their segregation due to the massive financial costs of rebuilding the North's infrastructure and rehabilitating a mentally/physically stunted and uneducated population. Even though the reunification costs increases each year, the Holocaust stays alive because information connected South Korea ignores the suffering when they are morally responsible and fully capable of taking back their own country. The S. Korean government downplays the N. Korean human rights abuses and over-hypes North Korea's military capacity to discourage citizens from talking about the necessity of freeing Korea. South Korea has 50 times greater GDP and generations more advance military, yet cowers to a starving, impoverished country with antique armaments. N. Korean refugees are not warmly received in S. Korean society. South Korea does not voice opposition to China's illegal forced repatriation of N. Korean refugees, of which there may be over 100,000. When men, women and children are repatriated back to North Korea, they face cruel punishment and imprisonment, or if they had communicated with Westerners or religious groups, they are tortured and/or executed. Yet, this does not concern or alarm the prosperous South Koreans. North Korean lives are dispensable to them. And this is all great news for tourists wanting to see a Stalinist/Maoist country in the 21st century. So no need to rush, you still have plenty of time to visit. The UN is powerless, and South Korea is spineless. If you want to help North Korean civilians, I recommend visiting HRNK (The Committee for Human Rights in North Korea) and the UK Manna Mission of Europe (which operates bakeries to feed NK children).
Medical tourism is booming in South Korea with K-pop fans flocking to the country in the hope that plastic surgery will help them look like their idols. Dura...
Travel video about destination South-Korea. South Korea is a land of ancient tradition and contemporary life, a fascinating world…with five thousand years of history. Seoul is the country’s economic and cultural centre, a metropolis of twelve million inhabitants who are proud of their ancient culture. The War Museum is a reminder of the Forgotten War when the United States of America and twenty other countries took part in a United Nations military operation to support South Korea against the forces North Korea and China. Thirty kilometres south of Seoul is the fortress town of Suwon where at the end of the eighteenth century the Hwaseong Fortress was built, now a World Heritage Sight. South Korea’s most famous monastery is located in the Gaya-San National Park. Today the complex and its ninety buildings have become one of the main Buddhist centres in the East.. Tumuli Park is situated in the centre of Kyong Ju, former capital of the Silla Kingdom and contains twenty three royal tombs that look from the outside like large green hills. A huge number of valuable finds were made here thus the National Museum was created in which more than a hundred and fifty thousand exhibits from prehistoric times right up to the Joseon Dynasty are on display. Jeju island is a unique holiday paradise, a volcanic island with temples, waterfalls, tea plantations and several leisure facilities. For Koreans as well as the Japanese, Jeju Island has, due to its tropical climate, become a very popular honeymoon destination. When during dinner a volcano erupts and laser gods battle against each other, the Korean people are reminded of the fact that they have withstood invasion by the Mongols, Chinese and Japanese. At the climax of the show a fiery dragon appears: his sole task to protect glorious South Korea!
South Korea Travel Video Guide: South Korea, formally the Republic of Korea is a country in East Asia. South Korea occupies the southern half of the Korean Peninsula, with North Korea to the north, China across the sea to the west and Japan a short ferry ride to the southeast. Archeological finds of prehistoric toolmaking on the Korean Peninsula date back to 70,000 BC, and the first pottery is found around 8000 BC. Comb-pattern pottery culture peaked around 3500-2000 BC. Legend has it that Korea began with the founding of Gojoseon (also called Ancient Chosun) by the legendary Dangun in 2333 BC. Archeological and contemporaneous written records of Gojoseon as a kingdom date back to around 7th-4th century BC. Gojoseon was eventually defeated by the Chinese Han Dynasty and its territories were governed by four Chinese commanderies. The political chaos following the fall of the Han Dynasty in China allowed native tribes to regain control of Korea and led to the emergence of the Three Kingdoms of Korea, namely Goguryeo, Silla and Baekje. Despite repeated attempts by China, namely the Sui Dynasty and later the Tang Dynasty, to conquer the Korean Peninsula, northern-based Goguryeo managed to repel them. Eventually, Goguryeo fell to a Silla-Tang alliance, which had earlier defeated Baekje. This unified Korea under the Silla dynasty. Even though Tang later invaded, Silla forces managed to drive them out, thus maintaining Korea's independence. Unified Silla was replaced by the Goryeo (also called Koryo) dynasty, from which the modern name "Korea" derives. One highlight of the Goryeo dynasty was that in 1234 the world's first metal movable type was invented by a Korean named Choe Yun-ui (200 years before Gutenberg's printing press). Goryeo was replaced by the Joseon (also called Chosun) dynasty, after a coup by one of its generals. The Joseon dynasty ruled Korea from 1392 to 1910, being one of the longest actively ruling dynasties in world history. It was during the early part of the Joseon dynasty that Korean technological inventions such as the world's first water clock, ironclad ship, and other innovations took place. During the rule of King Sejong the Great, the world's first rain gauge was invented and the Korean alphabet known as hangul was created. With one of the lowest birth rates in the world, South Korea is in danger of disappearing by the end of the millennium. If the situation stays as it is, South Koreans are predicted to become extinct by 2750. Because of the rapidly aging population, elderly prostitutes known as "Bacchus ladies" have cornered a number of public parks as their working areas. Meanwhile, South Korean kids are living with their families well into their 20s—as a result, an entire economy of sex motels has sprung up to give kids a place to fool around outside the watchful eyes of their parents. We sent Matt Shea to investigate this generational crisis, which led him to Seoul's red-light district, a pre-wedding photo shoot on the set of a Korean soap opera, and an erotic sculpture park on South Korea's "honeymoon island." This documentary unveils secrets about how Korea, once the poorest country in the world, escaped poverty and grew to become the World's 14th largest economy and the first Asian nation to host the G20 summit, in 2010. The film identifies key factors behind Korea's economic success such as Korea's strategies, incessant efforts and investment that helped the nation achieve what the world came to call the "Miracle on the Han River."
North and South Korea are, both legally and philosophically, in a state of war. While the guns may be silent, the conflict between the two countries has now become one of propaganda. With the assistance of the Human Rights Foundation, North Korean defectors now in South Korea have been launching hydrogen-filled balloons across the 38th parallel — carrying both money and propaganda. In late 2014, a balloon launch sparked a brief exchange of gunfire between North and South Korean soldiers, and even more recently, Pyongyang has promised that hellfire will rain on South Korea if any copies of the controversial Hollywood comedy The Interview make it across the border. VICE News traveled to Seoul to meet frontline soldiers in this information war — and to attend a clandestine launch of propaganda balloons into the Hermit Kingdom. KOREA HISTORY _ REBUILD INNOVATE South Korea Technology Leader WORLDS BEST AUTOMAKER advexontube.com WORLD TRAVEL (EUROPE, ASIA, AFRICA, AMERICAS..) South Korea’s development over the last half century has been nothing short of spectacular. Fifty years ago, the country was poorer than Bolivia and Mozambique; today, it is richer than New Zealand and Spain, with a per capita income of almost $23,000. For 50 years, South Korea’s economy has grown by an average of seven percent annually, contracting in only two of those years. In 1996, South Korea joined the Organization for Economic Cooperation and Development, the club of rich industrialized countries, and in 2010, it became the first Asian country and the first non-G-7 member to host a G-20 summit. To call South Korea an emerging market, therefore, is a bit of an anachronism. The country is a rich, technologically advanced, mature democracy with an impressive record of innovation, economic reform, and sound leadership. Yet South Korea is not exactly a developed market, either. The value of its exports plus imports (at $1.25 trillion a year) exceeds its national income (at $1.1 trillion). That openness, along with the lack of protection provided by a bloc such as the EU, subjects South Korea to greater market volatility than other major industrialized countries and presents some serious challenges. So, too, does its highly concentrated corporate sector, aging population, and politically dangerous neighborhood. South Korea may well be more dynamic than some developed economies, making it attractive to investors, but it is also much riskier. SO LONG, KOREA DISCOUNT Given South Korea’s extraordinary accomplishments, it is tempting to try to distill the secrets of its success, so that they can be bottled and used elsewhere. But South Korea’s remarkable leap from poverty to riches owes to a unique set of historical circumstances. Soon after the division of the Korean Peninsula, in 1945, South Korea already had in place the building blocks for growth: an educated population, property rights, land reform that boosted productivity, and the institutions of modern capitalism. But then came the Korean War, which devastated the country. Investment did not take off until the country began to rebuild in the 1960s, when the authoritarian president Park Chung-hee (father of the current president, Park Geun-hye) embarked on a set of policy reforms that encouraged domestic saving and opened the economy up to international trade. South Korea’s initial rapid growth was characterized by both political authoritarianism and extensive state intervention in the economy. In the 1970s and 1980s, Seoul channeled massive amounts of capital through subsidies and low-interest-rate loans into trusted family-led chaebol, or conglomerates. These favored firms also enjoyed trade preferences and monopoly rights, among other indulgences extended by the government. Such preferential treatment enabled the chaebol, which today include Hyundai and Samsung, to grow into massive business empires whose brands are now recognized and envied around the world. But the story has a dark side: today, the chaebol’s ongoing dominance poses challenges to regulators seeking to make South Korea’s markets more competitive. And the conglomerates’ historical ties to the country’s early dictators feed resentment among many South Koreans, who regard the businesses as having achieved their dominance unfairly. Thank You! God Bless

advexontube.com WORLD TRAVEL (EUROPE, ASIA, AFRICA, AMERICAS...) Korean cuisine has evolved through centuries of social and political change. Originating from ancient agricultural and nomadic traditions in the Korean peninsula and southern Manchuria, Korean cuisine has evolved through a complex interaction of the natural environment and different cultural trends.[2][3] Korean cuisine is largely based upon rice, vegetables, and meats. Traditional Korean meals are noted for the number of side dishes (banchan) that accompany steam-cooked short-grain rice. Kimchi is served often, sometimes at every meal. Commonly used ingredients include sesame oil, doenjang (fermented bean paste), soy sauce, salt, garlic, ginger, pepper flakes and gochujang (fermented red chili paste). Ingredients and dishes vary by province. Many regional dishes have become national, and dishes that were once regional have proliferated in different variations across the country. The Korean royal court cuisine once brought all of the unique regional specialties together for the royal family. Meals are regulated by Korean cultural etiquette. Thank You! God Bless

A U S military commander says China should not be concerned if the U S deploys an advanced missile defense system in South Korea to counter the threat from a nuclear North Korea. Gen. Curtis Scaparrotti is the commander of U S forces in South Korea. He told a congressional hearing Thursday that the defense system — if deployed — would be focused on defending the Korean Peninsula and wouldn't have "any influence beyond that. " Pacific forces commander Adm. Samuel Locklear said a potential deployment of the defense system was under discussion. He didn't say whether those were internal U S discussions or discussions with South Korea.

It was indeed a memorable experience going to South Korea. This is my first out of the country (Philippines) vacation. For one week of walking around the streets of South Korea may have drained all my energy, yet moments like this are totally worth it. Visa valid for 3 years with multiple entries, I will surely come back for more adventures. :)

Richmond Times Dispatch 2015-04-20South Korea ( listen), officially the Republic of Korea (Hangul: 대한민국; Hanja: 大韓民國; Daehan Minguk listen), is a sovereign state in the southern part of the Korean Peninsula. The name "Korea" is derived from Goryeo, a dynasty which ruled in the Middle Ages (an initial "G" in Korean is pronounced like an English "K").
Its neighbors are China to the west, Japan to the east, North Korea to the north, and the Korea Strait to the south. South Korea lies in the north temperate zone with a predominantly mountainous terrain. It covers a total area of 99,392 square kilometers and has a population of almost 50 million. The capital and largest city is Seoul, with a population of 9,794,304.
Archaeological findings show that the Korean Peninsula was occupied by the Lower Paleolithic period.Korean history begins with the founding of Gojoseon in 2333 BC by the legendary Dan-gun. Following the unification of the Three Kingdoms of Korea under Silla 668 AD, Korea went through the Goryeo Dynasty and Joseon Dynasty as one nation until the end of the Korean Empire in 1910, when it was annexed by Japan. After liberation and occupation by Soviet and U.S. forces at the end of World War II, the nation was divided into North and South Korea. The latter was established in 1948 as a democracy, though political turmoil and times of military rule and martial law characterized much of the period until the foundation of the Sixth Republic in 1987.
