Aaron Hernandez trial: Former New England Patriots tight end found guilty in murder of Odin Lloyd

Former Patriots star Aaron Hernandez is facing life in prison after a jury found him guilty of murder and five weapons charges, according to Reuters. The jury heard from 135 witnesses and deliberated for more than 25 hours before declaring Hernandez guilty of first-degree murder in the death of Odin Lloyd. Lloyd was a semi-professional football player and was dating the sister of Hernandez’s fiancee at the time of the murder. In the early morning hours of a June day in 2013, Hernandez picked up Lloyd from his home in Massachusetts. The two men who were with Hernandez -- Carlos Ortiz and Ernest Wallace -- will stand trial at a later date. With Lloyd in the car, Hernandez reportedly confronted him about spending time with people Hernandez didn't like. Hours later, a jogger discovered Lloyd’s body, peppered with gunshot wounds, at an industrial park about a mile from Hernandez’s home. Police found additional evidence, including 5 shell casings and an unlit joint containing DNA that matched Lloyd’s and Hernandez’s. Prosecutors also brought before the jury cellphone records, fingerprint evidence and surveillance footage from outside Hernandez’s home. In addition to Lloyd’s murder, Hernandez also faces charges of killing Daniel de Abreu and Safiro Furtado in a drive-by shooting in 2012. Jury members for Lloyd’s case told reporters that they didn’t even know about the double homicide until after Wednesday’s verdict. Hernandez signed a $40 million contract with the Patriots less than three years ago. ------------------------------------------------------------- Welcome to TomoNews, where we animate the most entertaining news on the internets. EXCLUSIVE: VICE News Meets Barack Obama: http://bit.ly/1wT03Bi Last summer, the group known as the Islamic State of Iraq and Syria (ISIS) swept from Syria into northern Iraq, routing Iraqi security forces and seizing the city of Mosul. Soon afterward, the group declared the establishment of a dubious "caliphate" in the area it controls and rebranded itself the Islamic State. With Iraq's army weakened and radical militants advancing on Baghdad, the country's Iran-backed Shia militias — which have their own history of sectarian abuses — fought back, halting the Islamic State's progress. The militias have successfully combated Islamic State fighters on the ground with the assistance of air strikes from a US-led military coalition. But their growing influence within Iraq's government amid accusations that they have harmed Sunnis in areas that they control has led many to fear that the militias threaten the country's fragile sectarian and political balance. VICE News traveled to Iraq in December to witness firsthand how Shia militias are taking the fight to the Islamic State, and to document the fallout of their controversial rise to power.

With Lloyd in the car, Hernandez reportedly confronted him about spending time with people Hernandez didn\'t like.
