FULL SPEECH: Peace Prize Message of Love between Pakistan, India. 10/10. Malala Yousafzai Makes Statement as she receives Nobel Peace Prize 2014. Malala Yousafzai Responds to Nobel Peace Prize. (Full Speech) Nobel laureate Malala Yousafzai, a devout Muslim, says she is happy to share the award with a Hindu child-rights activist from India. (NBC) Pakistani teen Malala Yousafzai, who was shot in the head by the Taliban for advocating girls' education, and Indian children's rights advocate Kailash Satyarthi were jointly awarded the 2014 Nobel Peace Prize on Friday. Yousafzai, 17, is the youngest winner of the award. She was honored for "her heroic struggle," said Thorbjørn Jagland, chairman of the Norwegian Nobel Committee. "Despite her youth, Malala ... has shown by example that children and young people can contribute to improving their own situation." Satyarthi, 60, has been a lifelong campaigner against the exploitation of children for financial gain. The announcement of a joint Indian and Pakistani winner came as the two countries were involved in deadly clashes along a stretch of disputed border. "The Nobel Committee regards it as an important point for a Hindu and a Muslim, an Indian and a Pakistani, to join in a common struggle for education and against extremism," Jagland added. Yousafazi, who received a standing ovation when she made a powerful address to the United Nations on her 16th birthday, is still receiving treatment in Britain for her injuries. "We are so proud," said Ahmad Shah, principal of the Sarosh Academy in her hometown of Mingora. "I was across the street when she was shot. And I now I see this day. What a day." However, the teen is sometimes viewed with suspicion in her conservative homeland, and is unable to return because of Taliban death threats. Mehar Bokhari, 30, one of Pakistan's leading female news anchors, said: "It's ironic, really. She is such an inspiration for the rest of the world, yet we fail to gain any inspiration from her as a people and a nation." Before the announcement, the secretive Norwegian Nobel Committee revealed that it had received a record 278 nominations. Committee member Geir Lundestad had suggested the choice was more difficult this year, telling The Associated Press they had "seven meetings rather than five or six." The $1.1 million prize will be presented on Dec. 10, the anniversary of prize founder Alfred Nobel's death in 1896. Nobel Peace Prize ceremony disrupted by Mexican flag protest Nobel Peace Prize ceremony disrupted by Mexican flag protest Nobel Peace Prize ceremony disrupted by Mexican flag protest Nobel Peace Prize disrupted by protest: Man brandishing Mexican flag is tackled by security as Pakistani teenager Malala becomes youngest ever recipient of award at star-studded ceremony Malala Yousafzai awarded the Nobel Peace Prize in Oslo, Norway Awards ceremony interrupted by a man who ran onto the stage Young man waved a Mexican flag and was later arrested She is join recipient of the prize with Indian activist Kailash Satyarthi Malala survived an assassination attempt by the Taliban in 2012 The 17-year-old schoolgirl from Pakistan is the youngest ever to win Miss Yousafzai became a household name after her campaigning for girls' right to education led to an assassination attempt by the Taliban two years ago, and has worked tirelessly as a human rights campaigner following her recovery. 'I tell my story, not because it is unique, but because it is not,' Malala said as she received the award in Oslo's ornate city hall on the anniversary of Swedish industrialist Alfred Nobel's death. Addressing being the youngest ever recipient of the tender age of 17, Malala said: 'I am pretty certain that I am also the first recipient of the Nobel Peace Prize who still fights with her younger brothers. 'I want there to be peace everywhere, but my brothers and I are still working on that.' Arriving in Norway with friends and young activists from Pakistan, Syria and Nigeria, Malala met thousands of children, walked the streets to greet supporters and will open an exhibit where her blood stained dress, worn when her school bus was attacked, was put on display. Miss Yousafzai was barely 11 years old when she began championing girls' education, speaking out in TV interviews. The Taliban had overrun her home town of Mingora, terrorizing residents, threatening to blow up girls' schools, ordering teachers and students into the all-encompassing burqas. She was critically injured in October 2012, when a Taliban gunman boarded her school bus and shot her in the head. A bullet narrowly missed her brain and she was later airlifted to Britain for specialist treatment at the Queen Elizabeth Hospital in Birmingham, where she underwent numerous surgeries and made a strong recovery. Malala currently lives with her father, mother and two brothers in Birmingham, attending a local school. She has since written a book, I Am Malala, spoken to international audiences and on television and has been been showered with human rights prizes, including the European Parliament's Sakharov Award. In September the Pakistani military arrested ten men, all part of the Tehrik-i-Taliban Pakistan (TTP), for the attempted murder of Malala. Her fellow recipient, Satyarthi, who is credited with saving around 80,000 children from slave labour sometimes in violent confrontations, kept a modest profile in Oslo and even conceded to being overshadowed by Malala surrounded by admirers. 'I've lost two of my colleagues,' Satyarthi said about his work. 'Carrying the dead body of a colleague who is fighting for the protection of children is something I'll never forget, even as I sit here to receive the Nobel Peace Prize.' Nobel Prize winners in literature, chemistry, physics, medicin eand economics are currently gathering in Stockholm, due to receive their prizes from the King of Sweden later in the day. Nobel Peace Prize winner Kailash Satyarthi joins Google's Executive Chairman Eric Schmidt for a fireside chat about his life's work. Nobel Laureate Kailash Satyarthi has been leading the global fight against child slavery for over three decades. As the founder of a grassroots nonprofit, Bachpan Bachao Andolan, or Save Childhood Movement, he has rescued more than 80,000 Indian children to date from various forms of exploitation from child labor to child trafficking. Kailash’s work has involved organizing almost weekly raid, rescue and recovery missions on workplaces that employ and enslave children. Since 2001, Satyarthi’s has risked his own life to rescue these children and has convinced families in more than 300 Indian villages to avoid sending their children to work, and instead putting them in school. Satyarthi’s has also managed to grab and retain the world’s attention on the problem. He organized the Global March Against Child Labor in the 1990s to raise awareness and free millions of children shackled in various forms of modern slavery. His activism was also instrumental in the adoption of Convention No. 182 by the International Labour Organization, a statute that's become a guideline for many governments on child labor. In 2014, he and Malala Yousafzai were awarded the Nobel Peace Prize for “their struggle against the suppression of children and young people and for the right of all children to education.”

"The Better Angels of Our Nature: Why Violence Has Declined" is a 2011 book by Steven Pinker, arguing that violence in the world has declined both in the long run and in the short. The phrase "the better angels of our nature" stems from US President Lincoln's first inaugural address. Pinker uses the phrase as a metaphor for four human motivations that, he writes, can "orient us away from violence and towards cooperation and altruism," namely: empathy, self-control, the "moral sense," and reason. Moderated by Tom Crann, host of All Things Considered on MPR News.

This song was performed at the Johnson Mansion in Charlotte, NC for a Fundraiser for the "No Backpack Project," which provides backpacks for school children in Liberia. The guest of honor was Leymah Gbowee, Nobel Peace Prize Laureate for 2011. She flew in for this event, and left for Liberia immediately after. It was a pleasure to have have been invited to sing for her and to meet her! In 2011, the Norwegian Nobel Committee decided that the Nobel Peace Prize for 2011 was to be divided in three equal parts between Ellen Johnson Sirleaf (Africa's first democratically elected President), Leymah Gbowee and Tawakkul Karman "for their non-violent struggle for the safety of women and for women’s rights to full participation in peace-building work, [and] ...to become participants on an equal footing with men in peace processes and in peace work in general. Leymah Gbowee mobilized and organized women across ethnic and religious dividing lines to bring an end to the long war in Liberia, and to ensure women’s participation in elections." http://www.nobelprize.org/nobel_prizes/peace/laureates/2011/press.html http://www.placeofhopescameroon.org/no-back-pack-day.php

With humour and humility she relates her life story, which began from humble roots in rural Kenya, and describes how some of Africa's most disadvantaged women significantly improved their environment. She challenges her audience to get involved at all levels against environmental degradation, crippling debt in the developing world, corruption and poverty. A group of inspired teachers gather after the talk to think about ways in which they can take these messages back into their schools. Licensed to CPD College Ltd.

Sydney Morning Herald 2015-04-11Since 1901, the Nobel Prize in Literature (Swedish: Nobelpriset i litteratur) has been awarded annually to an author from any country who has, in the words of the will of Alfred Nobel, produced "in the field of literature the most outstanding work in an ideal direction" (original Swedish: den som inom litteraturen har producerat det mest framstående verket i en idealisk riktning). Though individual works are sometimes cited as being particularly noteworthy, here "Work" refers to an author's work as a whole. The Swedish Academy decides who, if anyone, will receive the prize in any given year. The academy announces the name of the chosen laureate in early October. It is one of the five Nobel Prizes established by the will of Alfred Nobel in 1895; the others are the Nobel Prize in Chemistry, Nobel Prize in Physics, Nobel Peace Prize, and Nobel Prize in Physiology or Medicine.
Nobel's choice of emphasis on "idealistic" or "ideal" (English translation) in his criteria for the Nobel Prize in Literature has led to recurrent controversy. In the original Swedish, the word idealisk translates as either "idealistic" or "ideal". In the early twentieth century, the Nobel Committee interpreted the intent of the will strictly. For this reason, they did not award certain world-renowned authors of the time such as James Joyce, Leo Tolstoy, Anton Chekhov, Marcel Proust, Henrik Ibsen, and Henry James. J. R. R. Tolkien was nominated by his friend C. S. Lewis but rejected on the grounds of his "poor prose"; the prize was instead awarded to Ivo Andrić. More recently, the wording has been more liberally interpreted. Thus, the Prize is now awarded both for lasting literary merit and for evidence of consistent idealism on some significant level. In recent years, this means a kind of idealism championing human rights on a broad scale. Hence the award is now arguably more political.
A Nobel Committee is the working body responsible for the most of the work involved in selecting Nobel Prize laureates. There are five Nobel Committees, one for each Nobel Prize.
The Nobel Committees for four of the prizes, physics, chemistry, physiology or medicine, and literature, are working bodies within their prize awarding institutions, the Royal Swedish Academy of Sciences, Karolinska Institutet, and the Swedish Academy. These four Nobel Committees only propose laureates, while the final decision is taken in a larger assembly: the entire academy for the prizes in physics, chemistry, and literature, and the 50 members of the Nobel Assembly at the Karolinska Institute for the prize in physiology or medicine.
The fifth Nobel Committee, the Norwegian Nobel Committee responsible for the Nobel Peace Prize, has a different status since it is both the working body and the deciding body for its prize.
The work involved in selecting laurates for the Sveriges Riksbank Prize in Economic Sciences in Memory of Alfred Nobel, is done in the same way as for the five Nobel Prizes. The corresponding committee is called the Committee for the Prize in Economic Sciences in Memory of Alfred Nobel.
After his death in 1896, the will of Swedish industrialist Alfred Nobel established the Nobel Prizes. This specified that annual prizes are to be awarded for service to humanity in the fields of physics, chemistry, physiology or medicine, literature, and peace. Similarly, the Bank of Sweden Prize in Economic Sciences in Memory of Alfred Nobel is awarded along with the Nobel Prizes. Since the first award in 1901, the prizes have engendered criticism and controversy.
Nobel sought to reward "those who, during the preceding year, shall have conferred the greatest benefit on mankind". One prize, he stated, should be given "to the person who shall have made the most important 'discovery' or 'invention' within the field of physics". Awards committees have historically rewarded discoveries over inventions: 77% of Nobel Prizes in physics have been given to discoveries, compared with only 23% to inventions. In addition, the scientific prizes typically reward contributions over an entire career rather than a single year.
