An Easy Explanation Of The Gini Coefficient
This video shows how to calculate the Gini Index that corresponds to a given Lorenz function, using either the fundamental theorem of calculus or the function integration (fnInt) command on a TI83 graphing calculator. The meaning of the Gini Index is also explained.
What is Gini coefficient? A report all about Gini coefficient for homework/assignment The Gini coefficient (also known as the Gini index or Gini ratio) is a measure of statistical dispersion intended to represent the income distribution of a nation's residents. This is the most commonly used measure of inequality. The coefficient varies between 0, which reflects complete equality and 100 (or 1), which indicates complete inequality (one person has all the income or consumption, all others have none). It was developed by the Italian statistician and sociologist Corrado Gini and published in his 1912 paper "Variability and Mutability" (). Follow us on TWITTER: http://twitter.com/cnforbiddennews Like us on FACEBOOK: http://www.facebook.com/chinaforbiddennews Recently Peking University issued a report pointing out that the top 1 percent of Chinese households possess over one-third of the nation's wealth. But, 25 percent of the poorest families own just 1 percent of the country's wealth. The report says that families' net property of the Gini coefficient stood at 0.73. Experts say that the huge gap between rich and poor shows Deng Xiaoping's reform and opening policy doesn't work. The state-run mouthpiece people.cn said that Peking University's Institute of Social Science issued a report -- “Chinese Livelihood Development Report 2014” on July 25. The report says that Chinese inequality in property has increased rapidly. The net wealth of Gini coefficient was 0.45 in 1995, 0.55 in 2002, and 0.73 in 2012. The top 1 percent of the families have a third of the nation's wealth. However, 25 percent of the poorest families possess just 1 percent of national wealth. The Gini coefficient also known as Gini index, is an international measure of statistical dispersion intended to represent the income distribution of a nation's residents. The higher the value, the more the inequality would be. Jian Tianlun, US-based economist: “We knew in the past that Chinese wealth distribution is seriously unequal. However, the government's statistics have no credibility, We don't know the truth. This time the Gini index is 0.73, it is definitely the top in the world. Of over 60 percent of countries except China, only five countries all located in Africa, they are very under developed or exist serious racial differentiation.” Jason Ma, NTD Television special economic commentator: “This figure is shocking and strange. In the world, such as in Latin America, society likely became unhealthy by differentiation between rich and poor. China's Gini index reached 0.73, which proves that Chinese society is completely abnormal.” Radio France Internationale (RFI) reported that although Chinese major websites had reproduced people.cn report, the comment function had been disabled. There is no single post to follow the article. Not even propaganda posts followed. Writer Nanjinglong's blog pointed out that the reason is simple, if they sent 50-cent Party to post lies, it cannot prove the Chinese Communist Party's “Great, Glorious and Correct”, on the contrary, it will result in even worse impact. Under the propaganda department's arrangement, this news has been muted. Although you know the figure is close to the fact, but there is no way to communicate with readers. How serious is the problem? The real reason the cause is unknown. Jian Tianlun observes that the top Chinese families often possess huge undisclosed properties. The figure provided by Peking University is underestimated. Jian Tianlun: “This certainly excluded cash that corrupt officials had embezzled. Because embezzled money is illegal, is impossible to be accounted in. For example, after Zhou Yongkang's arrest, we know he possessed over 300 homes in Beijing. Officials similar to Zhou have tens of homes, there are many, so, empty homes and ghost towns exist everywhere in China. This is why less than 1 percent of people seized somuch assets.” Jason Ma points out that Gini index is 0.73, indicating the wealth gap is seriously wide. This kind of society doesn't have any stability. RFI says that according to theory of Deng Xiaoping, former Chairman of Central Military Committee, the reform is unsuccessful. Jian Tianlun: “This actually was caused by China's entire system, direction of reform and reform policy. It was Deng Xiaoping that let part of the population get rich first, and letting the rest support the rich, so the gap widened gradually.” Jason Ma: “The more one gets close to the people who have power, the quicker one gets rich. Once the people with power got rich, they would have their social interest firmed. Actually this is an economic development model of an extreme polarized society. This society is totally unstable, they just diverted the CCP's crisis onto the entire nation.” Jason Ma says that since 2003, the statistics bureau announced Gini index was 0.47 or 0.48. This time allowed figure 0.73 being disclosed, showing that at least one faction at high-level understood that they cannot cover their eyes to live. What the final reaction of the high-level would be? If the figure 0.73 caused a strong social response, would the CCP come out to deny the rumor? We will see. 《神韵》2014世界巡演新亮点 http://www.ShenYunPerformingArts.org/

***ORIGINAL UPLOAD BY RussiaToday*** Permission to repost granted. January 25, 2011 Thousands of anti-government protesters, some hurling rocks and climbing on top of an armoured police truck, clashed with riot police on Tuesday in the centre of Cairo in a Tunisia-inspired demonstration to demand the end of Hosni Mubarak's nearly 30 years in power. Police responded with blasts from a water cannon and set upon crowds with batons and acrid clouds of tear gas to clear demonstrators who chanted "Down with Mubarak", and as they demanded an end to the country's grinding poverty.

How we are being conned: Inequality, Taxation and Corporations. Our Tory Prime Minister (David Cameron) has been saying inequality is back down to 1986 levels - with the backing of the Office for National Statistics. But this is a lie - inequality has been getting much worse over these years - surely the PM and ONS must know this? I looked at the Gini coefficient (which ONS use to measure inequality) and found out it is a scam. I contacted the ONS but their reply was dismissive of my concerns - hence this video. The Gini coefficient is about as much use as a chocolate teapot for measuring inequality. For example: a dictatorship with one boss having 100 times the income of a worker can have better equality than a cooperative with six times income differential using the Gini Index. That is just using a small sample of 210 people. Also this cooperative with six times income differential having the same inequality as the UK (32.3) – when we know inequality here is worse than that. It is clear to me that Gini is merely a confidence trick using frequency distribution, also that it does not compare the poor to the rich - just the poor to the average income. Also I explain how it is the poor being squeezed with taxation - not the rich. Finally, the government could easily make the crooks running the corporations and banks responsible for their actions - why don't they? Please do not judge this video on my orator skills - or the special effects when I morph into my younger self, which is so poor I deliberately made it worse. Just look at the information within to see how I can be wrong about it. Unfortunately my health has not been too good and I haven't been able to concentrate much on my first effort - I know it could be a lot better. Sorry, it is the best I can do under the circumstances. Distribution of income in the United States has been the subject of study by scholars and institutions. Data from a number of sources indicate that income inequality has grown significantly since the early 1970s, after several decades of stability. While inequality has risen among most developed countries, and especially English-speaking ones, it is highest in the United States.Studies indicate the source of the widening gap (sometimes called the Great Divergence) has not been gender inequality, which has declined in the US over the last several decades, nor inequality between black and white Americans, which has stagnated during that time, nor has the gap between the poor and middle class been the major cause—though it has grown. Most of the growth has been between the middle class and top earners, with the disparity becoming more extreme the further one goes up in the income distribution. Upward redistribution of income is responsible for about 43% of the projected Social Security shortfall over the next 75 years. The Brookings Institution said in 2013 that income inequality was increasing and becoming permanent, reducing social mobility in the US.A 2011 study by the CBO found that the top earning 1 percent of households gained about 275% after federal taxes and income transfers over a period between 1979 and 2007, compared to a gain of just under 40% for the 60 percent in the middle of America`s income distribution. Other sources find that the trend has continued since then. In spite of this data, only 42% of Americans think inequality has increased in the past ten years. Income inequality is not uniform among the states; as measured by the Gini coefficient: after tax income inequality in 2009 was greatest in Texas and lowest in Maine.Scholars and others differ as to the causes, solutions, and the significance of the trend, which in 2011 helped ignite the `Occupy` protest movement. Education and increased demand for skilled labor are often cited as causes, some have emphasized the importance of public policy; others believe the cause(s) of inequality`s rise are not well understood. The Chechen Republic (/ˈtʃɛtʃɨn/; Russian: Чече́нская Респу́блика, Chechenskaya Respublika; Chechen: Нохчийн Республика, Noxçiyn Respublika), commonly referred to as Chechnya (/ˈtʃɛtʃniə/; Russian: Чечня́, Chechnya; Chechen: Нохчийчоь, Noxçiyçö), also spelled Chechnia or Chechenia, sometimes referred to as Ichkeria (English: Land of Minerals), is a federal subject (a republic) of Russia. It is located in the North Caucasus, situated in the southernmost part of Eastern Europe, and within 100 kilometers of the Caspian Sea. The capital of the republic is the city of Grozny. As of the 2010 Census, the republic had a population of 1,268,989 people, predominantly of the Chechen ethnic group with a notable Russian minority. After the dissolution of the Soviet Union in 1991, the Chechen-Ingush ASSR was split into two: the Republic of Ingushetia and the Chechen Republic. The latter proclaimed the Chechen Republic of Ichkeria, which sought independence. Following the First Chechen War with Russia, Chechnya gained de facto independence as the Chechen Republic of Ichkeria. Russian federal control was restored during the Second Chechen War. Since then there has been a systematic reconstruction and rebuilding process, though sporadic fighting continues in the mountains and southern regions of the republic. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Chechnya Income inequality in the United States has grown significantly since the early 1970s,[1][2][3][4][5] after several decades of stability,[6][7] and has been the subject of study of many scholars and institutions. Denmark has a diverse, mixed economy, but one that relies almost entirely on human resources, as there are few mineral resources available, except mature oil and gas wells in the North Sea. Cooperatives form a large part of some sectors, be it in housing, agriculture or retail. Foundations play a large role as owners of private sector companies. Denmark's nominal GDP was estimated to be $333,238 million, the 32nd largest in the world. It has the world's lowest level of income inequality, according to the World Bank Gini (%), and the world's highest minimum wage, according to the IMF. As of June 2010 the unemployment rate is at 7.4%, which is below the EU average of 9.6%. As of 28 February 2014 Denmark is among the countries with the highest credit rating. Denmark's main exports are: industrial production/manufactured goods 73.3% (of which machinery and instruments were 21.4%, and fuels, chemicals, etc. 26%); agricultural products and others for consumption 18.7% (in 2009 meat and meat products were 5.5% of total export; fish and fish products 2.9%). Denmark is a net exporter of food and energy and has since the 1990s had a balance of payments surplus. The accumulated value of service and merchandise exports in 2013 amounted to 54% of GDP, and imports in 2013 amounted to 49% of GDP. Notable among the service exports are container shipping. There is no net foreign debt as other countries owe more money to Denmark than Denmark owes to them, but because of large deficits due to increased unemployment levels the central government has increased its debt level since the end of September 2008, when it stood at 21 percent (gross debt) of GDP, according to the central bank - in accordance with the Eurostat EMU- gross debt numbers, which only take liabilities into account. (See below (Budgets)). Taking assets into account as well net debt of the central government was 11 percent. The public sector as a whole had net assets of 108 billion kroner in 2008. Within the European Union, Denmark advocates a liberal trade policy. Its standard of living is average among the Western European countries - and for many years the most equally distributed as shown by the Gini coefficient - in the world, and the Danes devote 0.8% of gross national income (GNI) to foreign aid. It is a society based on consensus (dialogue and compromise) with the Danish Confederation of Trade Unions and the Confederation of Danish Employers in 1899 in Septemberforliget (The September Settlement) recognising each other's right to organise, thus, negotiate. The employer's right to hire and fire their employees whenever they find it necessary is recognised. There is no official minimum wage (Danish: minimumsløn) set by the government; the minimum of wages (Danish: mindsteløn) is determined by negotiations between the organisations of employers and employees. Denmark produces oil, natural gas, wind- and bio-energy. Its principal exports are machinery, instruments and food products. The US is Denmark's largest non-European trading partner, accounting for around 5% of total Danish merchandise trade. Aircraft, computers, machinery, and instruments are among the major US exports to Denmark. Among major Danish exports to the U.S. are industrial machinery, chemical products, furniture, pharmaceuticals, Lego and canned ham and pork. This video is targeted to blind users. James Kenneth Galbraith (born January 29, 1952) is an American economist who writes frequently for mainstream and liberal publications on economic topics. He is currently a professor at the Lyndon B. Johnson School of Public Affairs and at the Department of Government, University of Texas at Austin. He is also a Senior Scholar with the Levy Economics Institute of Bard College. He is also part of the executive committee of the World Economics Association, created in 2011. From 1981 to 1982, Galbraith served on the staff of the Congress of the United States, eventually as Executive Director of the Joint Economic Committee. In 1985, he was a guest scholar at the Brookings Institution. Galbraith is currently a professor at the Lyndon B. Johnson School of Public Affairs and at the Department of Government, University of Texas at Austin. Galbraith heads up the University of Texas Inequality Project (UTIP), which has been described by economic historian Lord Skidelsky as "pioneering inequality measurement". UTIP is also noted for replacing the established Gini coefficient with the Theil index as the measurement of choice for comparing inequality between groups, regions and countries. In March 2008 Galbraith used the 25th Annual Milton Friedman Distinguished Lecture to launch a sweeping attack on the Washington Consensus on free market policies, especially the monetarist version. He argued strongly that Keynesian economics offered a solution to the financial crisis that started in 2007 whereas monetarist polices would deepen the recession. Towards the end of 2008 policy makers around the world began acting in line with Galbraith's recommendations, as part of the Keynesian resurgence described by the Financial Times as "a stunning reversal of the orthodoxy of the past several decades". In 2010 he edited an edition of his father's works for the prestigious Library of America series. Paul Robin Krugman (born February 28, 1953) is an American economist, Professor of Economics and International Affairs at the Woodrow Wilson School of Public and International Affairs at Princeton University, Centenary Professor at the London School of Economics, and an op-ed columnist for The New York Times.[4][5] In 2008, Krugman won the Nobel Memorial Prize in Economic Sciences for his contributions to New Trade Theory and New Economic Geography. According to the prize Committee, the prize was given for Krugman's work explaining the patterns of international trade and the geographic concentration of wealth, by examining the effects of economies of scale and of consumer preferences for diverse goods and services.[6] Krugman is known in academia for his work on international economics (including trade theory, economic geography, and international finance),[7][8] liquidity traps, and currency crises. Krugman is ranked among the most influential academic thinkers in the US.[9] As of 2008, Krugman has written 20 books and has published over 200 scholarly articles in professional journals and edited volumes.[10] He has also written more than 750 columns on economic and political issues for The New York Times, Fortune and Slate. As a commentator, Krugman has written on a wide range of economic issues including income distribution, taxation, macroeconomics and international economics. Krugman considers himself a liberal, calling one of his books and his New York Times blog The Conscience of a Liberal. His popular commentary has attracted considerable comment, both positive and negative.

How Income Inequality and the Lack of Economic Mobility Threaten the American Dream (2013) Economic mobility is the ability of an individual, family or some other group to improve (or lower) their economic status—usually measured in income. Economic mobility is often measured by movement between income quintiles. Economic mobility may be considered a type of social mobility, which is often measured in change in income. Socio-economic mobility in the United States refers to the movement of Americans from one social class or economic level to another, often by changing jobs or marrying. This vertical mobility can be the change in socioeconomic status between parents and children (inter-generational); or over the course of a lifetime (intra-generational). It typically refers to relative mobility — the chance that an American's income/status will rise or fall compared to others in another income/status group—but can also be absolute—whether (and by how much) living standards in America have increased. Belief in strong social and economic mobility—that Americans can and do rise from humble origins to riches—has been called a civil religion, the bedrock upon which the American story has been anchored, and part of the American identity (the American Dream), celebrated in the lives of famous Americans such as Benjamin Franklin and Henry Ford, and in popular culture (from the books of Horatio Alger and Norman Vincent Peale to the song Movin' on Up). Opinion polls show that this belief has been both stronger in the US than in years past, and stronger than in other developed countries. However, in recent years several large studies have found that vertical inter-generational mobility is lower, not higher, in the US than in those countries. The Brookings Institution said in 2013 that income inequality was increasing and becoming permanent, sharply reducing social mobility. Income inequality in the United States has grown significantly since the early 1970s, after several decades of stability, and has been the subject of study of many scholars and institutions. While inequality has risen among most developed countries, and especially English-speaking ones, it is highest in the United States. Income inequality (as measured by the Gini coefficient) is not uniform among the states: after-tax income inequality in 2009 was greatest in Texas and lowest in Maine. Most of the growth has been between the middle class and top earners, with the disparity becoming more extreme the further one goes up in the income distribution.[12] A 2011 study by the CBO[13] found that the top earning 1 percent of households increased their income by about 275% after federal taxes and income transfers over a period between 1979 and 2007, compared to a gain of just under 40% for the 60 percent in the middle of America's income distribution.[13] Other sources find that the trend has continued since then.[14] In spite of this data, only 42% of Americans think inequality has increased in the past ten years.[15] In 2012, the gap between the richest 1 percent and the remaining 99 percent was the widest it's been since the 1920s.[16] Incomes of the wealthiest 1 percent rose nearly 20 percent, whereas the income of the remaining 99 percent rose 1 percent in comparison.[16] Scholars and others differ as to the causes, solutions, and the significance of the trend,[17] which in 2011 helped ignite the Occupy protest movement. Education and increased demand for skilled labor are often cited as causes,[18] some have emphasized the importance of public policy; others believe the cause(s) of inequality's rise are not well understood.[13] Inequality has been described both as irrelevant in the face of economic opportunity (or social mobility) in America, and as a cause of the decline in that opportunity.[19][20][21] Yale professor and economist Robert J. Shiller, who was among three Americans who won the Nobel prize for economics in 2013, believes that rising economic inequality in the United States and other countries is the most important problem that we are facing now today.[22] Pope Francis echoed this sentiment in his Evangelii Gaudium, stating that as long as the problems of the poor are not radically resolved by rejecting the absolute autonomy of markets and financial speculation and by attacking the structural causes of inequality, no solution will be found for the world's problems or, for that matter, to any problems.[23] President Barack Obama referred to the widening income gap as the defining challenge of our time.

South Africa has been cited as having the highest gini coefficient in the world at 0.7. The coefficient measures the difference between the richest and the poorest person in a country. It is expressed as a number between 0 and 1, where 0 corresponds with perfect equality, where everyone has the same income and 1 corresponds with perfect inequality, where one person has all the income and everyone else has none. CCTV's Angelo Coppola reports.
IHDI: Income Gini coefficient Measure of the deviation of the distribution of income (or consumption) among individuals or households within a country from a perfectly equal distribution. A value of 0 represents absolute equality, a value of 100 absolute inequality. World Bank (2012).

BBC News 2015-03-13The Gini coefficient (also known as the Gini index or Gini ratio) is a measure of statistical dispersion developed by the Italian statistician and sociologist Corrado Gini and published in his 1912 paper "Variability and Mutability" (Italian: Variabilità e mutabilità).
The Gini coefficient measures the inequality among values of a frequency distribution (for example levels of income). A Gini coefficient of zero expresses perfect equality where all values are the same (for example, where everyone has an exactly equal income). A Gini coefficient of one (100 on the percentile scale) expresses maximal inequality among values (for example where only one person has all the income).
It has found application in the study of inequalities in disciplines as diverse as sociology, economics, health science, ecology, chemistry, engineering and agriculture. It is commonly used as a measure of inequality of income or wealth. Worldwide, Gini coefficients for income range from approximately 0.23 (Sweden) to 0.70 (Namibia) although not every country has been assessed.
Deng Xiaoping (IPA: [tə̂ŋ ɕjɑ̀ʊpʰǐŋ] ( listen); 22 August 1904 – 19 February 1997) was a Chinese politician, statesman, and diplomat. As leader of the Communist Party of China, Deng was a reformer who led China towards a market economy. While Deng never held office as the head of state, head of government or General Secretary of the Communist Party of China (historically the highest position in Communist China), he nonetheless served as the paramount leader of the People's Republic of China from 1978 to 1992. As the core of the second generation leaders Deng shared his power with the two most powerful men after him: Li Xiannian and Chen Yun.
Born into a peasant background in Guang'an, Sichuan, China, Deng studied and worked in France in the 1920s, where he was influenced by Marxism. He joined the Communist Party of China in 1923. Upon his return to China he worked as a political commissar in rural regions and was considered a "revolutionary veteran" of the Long March. Following the founding of the People's Republic of China in 1949, Deng worked in Tibet and other southwestern regions to consolidate Communist control. He was also instrumental in China's economic reconstruction following the Great Leap Forward in the early 1960s. His economic policies were at odds with the political ideologies of Chairman Mao Zedong. As a result, he was purged twice during the Cultural Revolution but regained prominence in 1978 by outmaneuvering Mao's chosen successor, Hua Guofeng.
