In a new interview with CNN International’s Hala Gorani, Paris Mayor Anne Hidalgo said she’s “still angry” with Fox News over its reports on her city’s supposed Muslim “no-go zones” and the lawsuit against the network she vowed to pursue will be moving forward.
“It was a lie at a very serious time,” Hidalgo said through a translator, referring to the days after the Charlie Hebdo shooting. “And some like Fox stigmatized a portion of the population and they wanted to show something that doesn’t exist. So it’s normal I’m angry. And I am still angry.”
Responding to the Washington Post’s Erik Wemple, who called the lawsuit “idiotic,” Hidalgo said her suit is not “just for show,” citing the economic implications that could arise if Americans take Fox’s characterization to heart and become afraid of visiting Paris.
But while Hidalgo told CNN the lawsuit has been filed, Wemple reported Friday that Fox had not as of yet received any formal complaint from the city.
Back in January, when Hidalgo first brought up the plans to sue in an interview with CNN’s Christiane Amanpour, Fox News EVP Michael Clemente said in a statement, “We empathize with the citizens of France as they go through a healing process and return to everyday life. However, we find the Mayor’s comments regarding a lawsuit misplaced.”
That same night, Fox News host Bill O’Reilly was on the case, telling his audience, “This is just an attention-getter, another playing to the left, that’s what this is. Suit’s going nowhere. It’s ridiculous.”

He makes history of being the first Muslim and Pakistani who became a Mayor third time in U.S. History.
Today I interviewed him and questioned him with very hard questions in which I asked what ties in between Pakistani establishment he has ? Did he issue a Heath certificate to the former President Pervez Musharraf based on his friendship ?
What merciless is behind those that are Americans or Pakistani and our both top establishment people's whom are his patients? How he has achieved to become Mayor for the third time. What discrimination and hardship he has faced throughout his journey.
The answers to these questions are in this interview. The video will be out soon.

OVERCAST SKIES DIMMED THE OPENING OF A MAN-MADE BEACH IN THE MIDDLE OF BRUSSELS, BELGIUM ON FRIDAY.
MORE THAN 3,000 TONS OF SAND WERE BROUGHT IN FROM BELGIUMS NORTH SEA COAST --TO CREATE A BEACH ALONG ONE OF THE CITY'S CANALS. --BUT SUNBATHERS STAYED IN DOORS.
TEMPERATURES BARELY REACHED 68 DEGREES. STILL A FEW LOCALS BRAVED A LIGHT DRIZZLE TO SEE WHAT THE OPENING DAY HAD TO OFFER.
[Notes:14. SOUNDBITE: (English) Danielle Desmedt, Brussels resident:]
"I think it's still okay. It's not raining, so that's the most important thing."
MEANWHILE THE ANNUAL "PARIS PLAGE" (PLAHZH), OR PARIS BEACH, IS UNDER CONSTRUCTION IN PARIS.
MACHINES SPRAYED 2,000 TONS OF SAND ONTO THE BANKS OF THE RIVER SEINE (SEHN), WHERE WORKERS SHOVELED IT INTO PLACE TO FORM THE BEACH.
OFFICIALS IN BOTH COUNTRIES HAVE BEEN BRINGING A LITTLE BIT OF THE BEACH --TO THE HEART OF THEIR CITIES FOR SEVEN YEARS.
[Notes:8. SOUNDBITE: (English) Freddy Thielemans, City of Brussels Mayor:]
"Some years ago, the mayor of Paris decided to have a beach and I thought, 'Damn it, we should have thought of the idea, you know? Then we decided to think it over, and came up with another concept than what was his. The idea here was not to have so much as a beach, than a city around a beach."

Democracynow.org - While 130 people died in the Paris attacks, an average of 100 Americans are killed in gun violence every day, prompting many to question whether "another Paris is taking place in America this very day." We speak with one of the mayors leading the charge for stricter federal gun laws. Ras Baraka is mayor of Newark, New Jersey, where one in four residents live in poverty, schools are under state control and the city has one of the highest murder rates in the country. "The shootings in these cities where I am the mayor and all over the country are growing higher and higher because of access to guns," Baraka said. "In New Jersey, fortunately, we have some stricter gun laws. But unfortunately, they bring guns across I-78 and I-95, guns come from the southern part of the country and into hands of 14- and 15-year-old kids who are using them to solve disputes and creating murder and mayhem in our community. We have to have universal kind of gun laws that affect every state and every city, not just a few."

French and American politicians are responding to the Paris attacks in a variety of different ways in regard to future willingness to take in Syrian refugees. France shows us how it’s done. John Iadarola (Think Tank) and Elliot Hill (The Lip TV), hosts of the The Young Turks, break it down. Tell us what you think in the comment section below.
"French President Francois Hollande promised to honor his commitment to take in tens of thousands of refugees on Wednesday. He said France would do so despite concerns raised by ultra-right nationalist leaders that refugees might pose a security threat to the country.
“Some people say the tragic events of the last few days have sown doubts in their minds,” Hollande said, but added that it is a “humanitarian duty” to help the throngs of refugees who have landed on European shores after fleeing conflict and hardship in countries like Syria and Afghanistan.
In a speech to mayors from around France, Hollande said France would welcome 30,000 refugees over the next two years. That’s even more than the 24,000 he committed to accepting in September.
Hollande said that he would invest about $53.3 million to develop housing for refugees.”*

A White House summit to address the threat of extremism heard testimony on Wednesday from two European mayors who recently saw violent attacks in their own cities.
Deadly attacks in France, Belgium and Denmark by extremists have left Europeans feeling vulnerable to the type of violent ideology promoted by the Islamic State group and once thought to be confined mostly to the Middle East and North Africa.
The Mayors of Paris, France and Vilvoorde, Belgium addressed the summit in Washington, DC, on Wednesday, outlining what their cities are doing to try and combat the rise in violence.
Paris Mayor Anne Hidalgo said as an immigrant herself, she was aware of how isolation can impact those who are not proud of their origins.
"Evidently these attacks in January did not target exclusively Paris or the Parisians. And this is something that we witnessed just quite recently in Copenhagen. And, in fact, these attacks are attacking the foundations of our democracies," said Hidalgo.
Hidalgo said she was convening a City Hall meeting in March looking for concrete proposals from religious leaders to help reduce violence.
Mayor Hans Bonte, from Vilvoorde, Belgium - on the outskirts of Brussels - described how 28 young people from his city had gone to Syria to join the Islamic State militant group.
Bonte said five were already known to have been killed, eight had returned to their home city and two are currently in prison.
"We are facing a global problem, but we have to act locally. We have to see that we can't win the war against radicalism and extreme violent behaviour of a minority only by bombing in Syria and Iraq," said Bonte.
"We also have to combat in our cities, in the neighbourhoods, especially in these vulnerable neighbourhoods we have to make a fist to break down those who try to radicalise other people," he added.
US police leaders, lawmakers and mayors from around the world are gathering in Washington, hoping to concentrate the world's focus on the need to combat the underlying ideologies that entice otherwise modern individuals to behead a non-believer, kidnap a schoolgirl or shoot up a synagogue.
The summit was originally planned for last October and in the months since, extremist violence has gotten worse, with the Islamic State group metastasising and European cities learning firsthand that extremism's reach is not confined to the Middle East.

Mayors urge bold action on climate at Vatican meeting

Dozens of environmentally friendly mayors from around the world demanded on Tuesday that their national leaders take bold steps at the Paris climate talks this year, saying that may be the last chance to keep the warming of the Earth at levels safe for humanity.
Some 60 mayors gathered on Tuesday at the Vatican for a two-day climate conference to keep the pressure on world leaders ahead of the Paris negotiations in December and to promote Pope Francis' environmental encyclical, which denounced the fossil fuel-based world economy that exploits the poor and destroys the Earth.
The mayors are expected to sign a declaration that states that "human-induced climate change is a scientific reality and its effective control is a moral imperative for humanity," according to the final declaration seen by The Associated Press.
In his remarks to the meeting, New York City Mayor Bill de Blasio announced new greenhouse gas emissions targets for the Big Apple and urged other cities to follow suit.
"The Paris summit is just months away," De Blasio said. "We need to see it as the finish line of a sprint, and take every local action we can in the coming months to maximize the chance that our national governments will act boldly."
De Blasio is a founding member of an alliance of cities around the world that have committed to reducing their emissions by 80 percent by 2050 or sooner. He said New York was taking an interim step, committing to reducing its emissions by 40 percent by 2030.
The climax of Tuesday's inaugural session was an afternoon audience with Pope Francis, who has become a hero to the environmental movement and has used his moral authority and enormous popularity to focus world attention on climate change and its effects on the poor.
The Vatican conference is aimed at showing how both are related: The exploitation of the Earth and its most vulnerable people, with global warming often responsible for creating "environmental refugees" forced to flee homes because of drought or other climate-induced natural disasters.
"Addressing both these phenomenon, climate change and modern slavery, is a herculean task for us as city administrators," said Tony Chammany, the mayor of Kochi, India.
Financial incentives
The final declaration calls for financial incentives to transition from using fossil fuels to using low-carbon and renewable energies and to shift public financing away from the military to "urgent investments" in sustainable development, with wealthy countries helping poorer ones.
And it says political leaders have a "special responsibility" at the Paris talks to approve a "bold climate agreement that confines global warming to a limit safe for humanity, while protecting the poor and the vulnerable from ongoing climate change that gravely endangers their lives."
Drawing rousing applause in one of the opening speeches, California Gov. Jerry Brown denounced global warming deniers who he said are "bamboozling" the public and politicians with false information to persuade them that the world isn't getting warmer.
Brown, a former Jesuit seminarian, urged the mayors to not be complacent in opposing climate deniers. California has enacted the toughest greenhouse gas emissions standards in North America.
"We have a very powerful opposition that, at least in my country, spends billions on trying to keep from office people such as yourselves and elect troglodytes and other deniers of the obvious science," he said.
Stockholm Mayor Karin Wanngaard said the Paris talks must take fossil fuels off the table and focus on other energy sources. Stockholm is one of the world's leaders in using renewable energy sources, with 75 percent of the city's public transport network runs on renewable energy. Wanngaard's goal is to make the Swedish capital fossil fuel-free by 2040.
"Climate negotiators must dare to push boundaries and exclude fossil fuels as an option and reward solutions that are long-term sustainable and renewable," she said.
Other mayors attending hail from Boston; Boulder, Colorado; Oslo, Norway; San Francisco and Vancouver. Experts have long said that cities are key to reducing global warming since urban areas account for nearly three-quarters of human emissions.
The conference opened with two tearful testimonies by Mexican women who were trafficked for prostitution and forced labor.
"We are human beings," said Ana Laura Perez Jaimes, who told of the 600 scars across her body she suffered when forced to work as a slave.
wn.com/Mayors Urge Bold Action On Climate At Vatican Meeting
Wanngaard's goal is to make the Swedish capital fossil fuel-free by 2040.

Mayors from around the world and Asian ambassadors observed a minute of silence during a meeting on Saturday in Paris to seek ways to help victims of the tsunami, especially children.
Paris Mayor Bertrand Delanoe hosted the talks that gathered mayors and other representatives from about 20 cities, from Istanbul to Rome to Toronto.
Delanoe said the mayors planned to focus on helping children in countries devastated by the December 26 earthquake-triggered tsunami, which killed more than 157-thousand people.
"To be reborn, to find hope, first of all these regions need for the children to have prospects," he said, adding that cities hoped to help with projects such as rebuilding schools.

FRANCE, Paris: Members of a French delegation spoke at a major Iran Freedom rally in Villepinte on Saturday, June 13, 2015. The event was held at Parc des Expositions exhibition center.
The delegation included Dominique Lefebvre, Member of the French Parliament for Val d’Oise; Alan Neri, Member of French Senate; and Jean-Pierre Muller, Mayor of Magny-en-Vexin.
The speakers supported the democratic aspirations of their Iranian people and their organized opposition. They also voiced support for the National Council of Resistance of Iran (NCRI) and its President-elect Maryam Rajavi, who called for a democratic, secular and non-nuclear Iran.
Iranians and their international supporters including 600 international lawmakers and personalities attended the rally in support of Iranian opposition leader Rajavi’s 10-point plan for a future free Iran.
They indicated that preventing nuclear proliferation and the defeat of Islamic fundamentalism calls for supporting Iran’s Parliament-in-exile, the NCRI, to bring about regime change.

The New School (http://www.newschool.edu/) engages with world-leading Mayors and local government representatives as they pledge their support for the United Nations’ new Sustainable Development Goals (UN SDGs) in their cities and commit to implementing the new urban agenda between now and 2030.
At this event, global urban leaders will offer a roadmap from New York’s UN SDGs to Paris’ climate summit at COP21 (December 2015), with implications for the new urban agenda to be adopted at Habitat III in Quito (October 2016).
The Under 2 Memorandum Of Understanding is an agreement amongst these subnational jurisdictions to limit the increase in global average temperature to below 2 degrees Celsius - the warming threshold at which scientists say there will likely be catastrophic climate disruptions. Since the global agreement was first signed at a Sacramento ceremony in May, other states and provinces joined in June, July and September. With the addition of Zhenjiang in China and Los Angeles last week, the first cities to endorse the agreement, a total of 23 jurisdictions in 10 countries and five continents have signed or endorsed the Under 2 MOU, collectively representing more than $5.5 trillion in GDP and 141 million people.
Speakers:
- Nilda Mesa
- Francesco La Camera
- Governor Edmund Brown, Jr., Governor of California
- Glen R. Murray
- Ambassador Laurence Tubiana
- Jeffrey Sachs
Location:
