Russian news agency Interfax quoted a separatist leader as saying on Thursday, pro-Russian separatists have started pulling back artillery from positions in the southern part of their Donetsk separatist region in east Ukraine. Interfax reported that Russia's Defence Ministry said on Thursday that large-scale anti-aircraft exercises had started in southern Russia, involving over 2,000 troops and 500 items of weaponry. The Defence Ministry added that the military exercises would last until April 10 and take place in the Southern, and North Caucasus Federal Districts. Pro-Russian separatists will press on with a military offensive in east Ukraine and will not initiate ceasefire talks with the Ukrainian authorities. Alexander Zakharchenko, head of the self-proclaimed Donetsk People's Republic in east Ukraine, made clear the rebels were in no mood to compromise after making territorial gains in recent weeks. Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov told Interfax news agency in an interview published on Monday, moscow wants a solution to the crisis in Ukraine envisaging a constitutional reform and the Russian-speaking eastern regions staying with Kiev. Ukraine's Finance Minister Natalia Yaresko said on Wednesday Ukraine expects the first tranche of aid from the International Monetary Fund to amount to $5 billion. According to news agency Interfax Ukraine, when asked how large she expected the first slice of IMF funding to be under a new $17.5 billion program, Yaresko said "five". The Washington-based fund announced a preliminary agreement for the new four-year loan program last month.
