BLACKS IN THE PACIFIC By RUNOKO RASHIDI DEDICATED TO SISTER CHARSEE McINTYRE PART 1 MELANESIA: THE STRUGGLE CONTINUES! Melanesia (the Black islands of the South Pacific) has been described as the eastern flank of the African world, an expression of ages past when an uninterrupted belt of Black people stretched across Africa, Eurasia, Australia, Oceanica and ancient America. In 1545 Spain made a claim on New Guinea, the largest and most populous island in Melanesia. Indeed, New Guinea is the largest island in the world after Greenland. It is tremendously wealthy in mineral resources, including uranium, copper cobalt, silver, gold, manganese, iron and oil. In 1545 Spain made a claim on the island and called it Nueva Guinea because of the striking resemblance between Melanesians and West Africans. Other Melanesian islands include New Caledonia, the Solomon Islands, Vanuatu, Fiji, New Ireland and New Britain. Split into two by colonial design, New Guinea has until recently contained a racially homogeneous population of five to six million Africoid people. The eastern half of the island became independent in 1975 under the name of Papua New Guinea. In a 1976 interview, Foreign Minister Ben Tanggahma of Papua New Guinea insisted that: "Africa is our motherland. All of the Black populations which settled in Asia over the hundreds of thousands of years, came undoubtedly from the African continent. In fact, the entire world was populated from Africa. Hence, we the Blacks in Asia and the Pacific today descend from proto-African peoples. We were linked to Africa in the past. We are linked to Africa in the present. We will be linked to Africa in the future." The western half of New Guinea, however, along with a significant portion of the island's total population, has been seized by Indonesia. Indonesians generally have a condescending view of Melanesians and consider them their racial inferiors. Under Indonesian rule since 1963, the Melanesians of New Guinea, known as Kanaks, want their island to become an independent country run by and for Melanesians. Their struggle continues.

Fiji is an island nation in the Pacific Ocean. Though geographically Melanesian, the music of Fiji is more Polynesian in character. Nevertheless, Fijian folk styles are distinct in their fusion of Polynesian and Melanesian traditions. Folk music is dominated by vocal church music, as well as dances characterized by rich and dull harmony and complex percussion made from slit drums or natural materials, like drums. Fijian people are the major indigenous people of the Fiji Islands, and live in an area informally called Melanesia. Indigenous Fijians are believed to have arrived in Fiji from western Melanesia approximately 3,500 years ago, though the exact origins of the Fijian people are unknown. Later they would move onward to other surrounding islands, including Rotuma, as well as blending with other (Polynesian) settlers on Tonga and Samoa. They are indigenous to all parts of Fiji except the island of Rotuma. The original settlers are now called "Lapita people" after a distinctive pottery produced locally. Lapita pottery was found in the area from 800 BC onward. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Fijian_people

Sponsored by Volvo, the 2014 RUPA Awards luncheon was held today at Sydney's Merivale (Ivy Bar) function room. Pacific Illustrated was able to interview Henry Speight, AKA 888, joint winner alongside Pat McCutcheon of the Community Service Award. Fellow Fijian-Australian centre Samu Kerevi, from Brisbane City's premiership NRC franchise, won the Buildcorp NRC's Players' Player award. Other winners on the night included James Slipper who won the highly coveted Medal for Excellence Award. The award is the result of votes cast by each Super Rugby player for both on and off the field efforts based on leadership, performance, consistency and discipline. Popular with the public, Western Force skipper Matt Hodgson took the People's Choice Award. Jeremy Tilse was awarded the Academic Excellence award for his continued academic achievements, while Sean McMahon took out Super Rugby debutant of the year. Rugby 7s Players' Player awards were secured to Cameron Clark and Emilee Cherry. Congrats to all players who were nominated and in particular those players who walked away with the awards today. Well done to RUPA for the good work they do each year in supporting professional rugby players with the challenges experienced both on and off the field. Not to mention, the lunch formalities and setup was of the highest standard.

As of 2005, Fijians constituted slightly more than half of the Fijian population. Indigenous Fijians are predominantly of Melanesian extraction, with some Polynesian admixture. Other ethnic groups in Fiji include Indo-Fijians, the Rotuman people, and minority communities, which include Caucasians, Chinese, and other Pacific Islanders.
New Zealand has a large Fijian population, according to the Ministry of Pacific Island Affairs. In 2001, Fijian people were the fifth largest Pacific ethnic group living in New Zealand. There was a decrease of 8 percent between 1996 and 2001. The estimated Pacific Islander population size is 231,800 in 2001 Fijians comprising about 7,000 of that.
