Iranians vote amid economic woes - 06/14/2013 As Iranians head to the polls this Friday, their country weathers an unprecedented economic crisis, due mainly to international sanctions over Iran's controversial nuclear programme. When it comes to Tehran, it's impossible to avoid politics and easy to overlook the Iranian city's thriving culinary scene. In our first installment of The MUNCHIES Guide to Tehran, our host Gelareh Kiazand introduces us to the bustling street food offerings in the city. We begin our journey at the capital city's Grand Bazaar, since that's where commodities first arrive. Gelareh beelines for the market's food stands, where she samples dried fruits and nuts while waiting out the line at Moslem Restaurant, frequented by up to 5,000 kebab connoisseurs daily—well worth it for her favorite tah chin. At the more modest and bygone Tajrish Bazaar, she's the proverbial kid in a candy store, wading through copper and carpet vendors in search of sweet snacks, such as grape molasses and lavasak (fruit leather). Iranian Foreign Minister Mohammad Javad Zarif says Iran will continue to have a serious uranium enrichment program under any deal with the P5+1 group. Zarif made the remarks at a press conference at the end of a week of talks with the six countries in Vienna. The Iranian foreign minister added that four months is enough time to resolve the outstanding issues in the nuclear negotiations. He went on to say that the seven months of additional time provided by the extended deadline will be used to put complicated technical issues into a final agreement. Zarif also stated that a deal is within reach if a positive-sum approach is adopted rather than a zero-sum perspective. Earlier, Zarif and EU coordinator Catherine Ashton read out a joint statement on the extension of a former plan of action that expired at midnight on November 24th. They said that the two sides had agreed to continue diplomatic efforts toward a comprehensive nuclear deal at the quickest pace possible. They also confirmed that the next meeting between Iran and the P5+1 group will be held in December. For our second installment of The MUNCHIES Guide to Tehran, Gelareh visits Nayeb, a white-tablecloth restaurant that's been serving up succulent kebabs in Iran for over 120 years—and even got its initial footing in the bazaar. Their signature dish, koobedih, is a spiced meat kebab dipped in onion juice and cooked over an open flame, served with rice, somagh (sour powdered sumac) butter, and raw egg. After dining with Nayeb's fifth generation, great-great-great-great-granddaughter Sogol, Gelareh heads to the Baghe Saba Teahouse—a cultural hub akin to a Parisian salon that was once a mens-only enclave but now welcomes families. There, Gelarah is greeted by a buffet of salads, stuffed eggplant, barley soup, and every size of sabzi koofteh (Persian meatballs). All aboard the Tehran express: Why tourists are paying $40,000 to travel into the heart of the hard-line Muslim state - and the majority are Americans For years it was a no-go zone, locked in diplomatic disputes with the United States, which it famously decried as 'The Great Satan'. But now Iran, which sparked one of the 20th Century's tensest diplomatic stand-off by taking 52 Americans hostage, is once more a popular tourist spot. Tehran, the vibrant capital, is the final destination of a new luxury train trip from Europe to the Middle East, which also takes in Persian ruin sites like Isfahan and Persepolis. And, according to the Golden Eagle Luxury Trains company, which has just launched its Jewels of Persia service, a substantial chunk of its customers are from the U.S. The train journey, which costs around $40,000 per passenger, takes a 14-day journey from Budapest, Hungary, through eastern Europe, Turkey and into Iran. Speaking to NBC News, one customer from Kansas said her family think she is 'absolutely nuts'. She said: 'There is no reason not to come to Iran, don't let what is perceived to keep you home.' A report from the Iranian capital says there is heightened security in Tehran's streets as the Iranian government's cuts to economic subsidies come into force. AP quoted witnesses as saying clusters of riot police could be seen at every major square in the city. It is an idea that aims at multiplying trade exchange between Iran and Russia and bypassing the sanctions on Iran’s banking sector. Head of Iran-Russia Joint Chamber of Commerce Assadollah Asgaroladi says that Iran and Russia are studying the possibilities of opening a new chapter in trade relations between Tehran and Moscow that according to him could break the domination of western currencies over Iran-Russia trade. Unilateral US and EU sanctions on Iran’s banking sector and the recent western sanctions against Russia over Ukraine have prompted trade officials from both sides to boost economic cooperation. Since President Rouhani took office in 2013 both Iranian and Russian heads of states have met in four different occasions. Iran’s minister of economy says that the Islamic Republic has already traded with some of its partners through the exchange of national currencies and will welcome the act. Elsewhere in the parliament MPs are cautiously observing the steps taken by the Iran-Russia joint chamber of commerce. Law makers say that Iranian merchants have already had similar experiences with China and India but the fluctuation of currency rates in those countries resulted into losses for the Iranian side. Tehran and Moscow already have close political ties. Now both countries are trying to strengthen economic ties as a means to get even closer. Discussing monetary and financial systems under Islamic principles; Tehran has organized a two-day conference on Islamic banking which has brought together senior financial experts and officials among them the minister of economy and the governor of the central Bank of Iran. The conference is mainly aimed at finding a proper solution to the economic woes of the country. It was a good opportunity for the officials to explain more about the challenges facing Iran's economic development. Meanwhile addressing the conference the governor of the central bank of Iran Valiollah Seif said that the first step is to control inflation; Head of Iran's Presidential office Mohammad Nahavandian who is an economist himself attended He noted that if a banking system is truly Islamic it should have positive impacts on the economy of the society but if it has failed to achieve such a goal it means that it has not been thoroughly Islamic and the banking system needs to be reviewed. Islam's strong prohibition of usury or Riba in particular is seen as a new foundation for a healthy banking system and consequently a sustainable economy. Other Islamic principles like zakat and waqf or endowments have potential economical functions. In recent years Islamic Banking for example, has been tried with some success in some of Muslim and non-Muslim countries. International Financial Services Authority estimates the assets controlled by Islamic banks at the global level to be around 500bn dollars which is growing at a pace of 10-15% per year. Experts believe with about 1.5 billion Muslims worldwide Islamic financial and economic model seems to be a feasible solution for the future.

Al Jazeera 2015-04-07Oil reserves in Iran, according to its government, rank third largest in the world at approximately 150 billion barrels (24×10^9 m3) as of 2007, although it ranks second if Canadian reserves of unconventional oil are excluded. This is roughly 10% of the world's total proven petroleum reserves. Iran is the world's fourth largest oil producer and is OPEC's second-largest producer after Saudi Arabia. As of 2009 it was producing an estimated 4.172 million barrels per day (663.3×10^3 m3/d) of crude oil. At 2006 rates of production, Iran's oil reserves would last 98 years if no new oil was found.
Iran has more than a century of history in exploration and production activities; the first successful exploration well was Masjid Suleiman-1 on May 26, 1908. Since then, based on the latest oil and gas reports, 145 hydrocarbon fields and 297 oil and gas reservoirs have been discovered in Iran, with many fields having multiple pay zones. A total of 102 fields are oil and the remaining 43 are gas, and there are 205 oil reservoirs and 92 natural gas reservoirs. According to Iran Energy Balance Sheet (2009, in Persian), 78 of these fields are currently active, with 62 onshore and 16 offshore, leaving 67 fields inactive at present. Some 23 hydrocarbon fields lie in border areas and are shared between Iran and adjacent countries, including Kuwait, Iraq, Qatar, Bahrain, UAE, Saudi Arabia and Turkmenistan .
Tehran ( pronunciation (help·info)) (Persian: تهران Tehrān; pronounced [tehˈɾɒːn]), sometimes spelled Teheran, is the capital of Iran and Tehran Province. With an estimated population of 8,429,807; it is also Iran's largest urban area and city, the largest city in Western Asia, one of the largest in Southern Asia, and the 19th-largest city globally.
In the 20th century, Tehran was subject to mass-migration of people from all around Iran. The city is home to many historic mosques, churches, synagogues and Zoroastrian fire temples. Contemporary Tehran is a modern city featuring many structures, of which the Azadi (Freedom) Tower and the Milad Tower have come to be symbols of Tehran itself. In 2008 Tehran was the least expensive capital in the world and the second-least expensive city globally based on the cost-of-living index presenting the best value for money in the world. Globally it stands 19th by city population, 56th by the size of its GDP and 29th by the population of its metropolitan area. Throughout Iran's history, the capital city has been relocated many times, with Tehran being the 32nd national capital of Iran. Persian is the city's native tongue, with roughly 98% of the population able to speak and understand it. The majority of people in Tehran identify themselves as Persians. In pre-Islamic and early Islamic times, Tehran was called Ray (which in the Avesta occurs in the form of Ragha)[citation needed].
In your plane in the blue sky
You roam again
Words that echo in your mind
Make your heart beat faster
This is no Vietnam
We will win in Iran
The president said let it ride
Islam be damned
Make your last stand
In Tehran
Warrior, the time bombs
About to go
What will you feel
Will you ever wonder
If the man that's in your sights
Ever kissed his girl goodbye
The captain said kill or die
Islam be damned
Make your last stand
In Tehran
Great Satan
Our flags of burning
Soon America may find
Its young man in the sand
Where there casualty
Is just a number
In Iran
The president said let it ride
You will be damned
Make your last stand
In your plane in the blue sky

Make your heart beat faster
This is no Vietnam
We will win in Iran
