Sweaty, itchy beards. Pounding 45°C desert heat. Lung-implodingly high mountain passes. Cows in lime-green Ladas. More friendly kids than an extremely enthusiastic baseball coach could high-five in the busiest of baseball seasons, and so much more vodka than even the most serious Russian alcoholic could ever hope to consume. This film is the result of months of adventure whittled down to minutes of digital moving-image-magic for your armchair entertainment. Kick back with a nice cup of tea and enjoy some snippets of our bike ride through Central Asia. Huge thanks to our friends for the fun and adventure along the way, and of course for the amazing footage! Good luck with the rest of your adventures! Traversing near fire blazing 45 degree deserts and gasping for oxygen along the unforgiving terrain of the highway many refer to as 'The Roof of the World' with only a small backpack and hybrid bicycle was one of the most memorable experiences of my life. I have created this short documentary film to share with everyone the emotional highs, lows and beautiful scenery along with providing a glimpse into the daily lives of some of the most hospitable people I have ever met. Enjoy!

How do China's concerns over the Uyghurs of Xinjiang affect its strategy in Central Asia? Arguing that China's turn to land routes to the West arise from its desire to escape from US control of sea lanes, Ben Chang suggests ways in which China's approach to former Soviet parts of Central Asia may mirror its strategy in Xinjiang. This presentation will offer insights of importance to anyone following Central Asia, China, energy, development, and western strategies in Central Asia.

Traveler Ian Wright's journey begins in the smallest of these oasis towns, Khiva. Khiva is a strange time capsule in the middle of the Kara-Kum Desert. The city grew up around one small well and the old inner town with its mud streets and squares has been perfectly preserved as a museum. Ian wanders the streets and attends an Uzbek wedding. Later that evening he takes part in a wrestling contest. Ian drives to Bukhara and swims in the sacred pool in the centre of town called Lyab-i-Haus. He visits a holy Imam at the tomb of Sheikh Bakhautdin just outside Bukhara and joins some old men discussing Islamic and Soviet history. Tashkent is Ian's next destination and he arrives in time for the Independence Day celebrations. From Tashkent he flies to Bishkek, the capital of the Republic of Kyrgyzstan. Kyrgyzstan is a mountain paradise surrounded by deserts and populated mostly by nomads who were never quite tamed by the Soviet regime. Ian makes his way into the Tian Shan mountains, where he meets an eagle trainer and watches his eagle hunt a badger. He climbs to a higher plateau where some local villagers have gathered to celebrate the festival for 'Manas', a mythical folk hero. Karakol serves as a base for horse trekking, climbing and skiing expeditions to the Tian Shan mountain range. Impossibly remote, they are seldom visited, with jagged peaks stretching to 7000 meters. From Karakol, Ian hitches a ride in an old Red Army helicopter and goes heli-skiing with them. Ian travels to the remote and stunning Arshane Valley in a bumpy wagon. He goes on a horse trek and meets nomadic shepherds who live in an oval-shaped tent called a 'yurt'. On special occasion they prepare a feast called a beshparmak, where they kill and cook a sheep. They have so few Western visitors that they prepare a feast especially for Ian. Ian has to plait the intestines and cook the sheep's head in the fire. He then shares a meal with the nomads and has to eat the sheep's eye, which is offered only to the honored guest and to refuse is an insult.

http://silkroadexplore.com/ Central Asia Travels: Travelling to Kyrgyzstan Kyrgyzstan, also referred to as the Kyrgyz Republic, is a country that is situated in Central Asia. It is landlocked and bordered by four other countries: Kazakhstan to the north, Tajikistan to the south, Uzbekistan to the west, and China to the east. The capital of Kyrgyzstan is Bishkek, which is located at the northern part of the country. Aside from being the largest and most populated city, you may also notice that many of Bishkek's buildings bear some Soviet influence. The country's official languages are Kyrgyz and Russian. The Kyrgyz ethnic group makes up more than 60% of Kyrgyzstan's population, followed by the Uzbeks, Russians, and Germans. Kyrgyzstan Tourism People who are looking for Central Asia travel places should consider putting Kyrgyzstan on their list of countries to visit. Seeing the nature of Kyrgyzstan is highly recommended as it boasts of mountain ranges, rapid-flowing rivers, highland lakes, forests, deserts, and glaciers. One of the most popular reasons people visit Kyrgyzstan is because of Lake Issyk-Kul and the Tian Shan mountains. Lake Issyk-Kul is actually the tenth biggest lake in the world in terms of volume, measuring 182 kilometers in length, 60 kilometers in width, and it covers an area of more than 6,000 square kilometers. The Tian Shan mountain range, on the other hand, is located across the border between Kyrgyzstan and China. Its highest peak is called the Victory Peaks which stands at approximately 7,400 meters above sea level. Kyrgyzstan Culture The Kyrgyz people have a rich history and cultural traditions. They started out as nomads living in the south-central part of Russia, between Lake Baikal and Yenesei River, approximately 2,000 years ago. Their language, Kyrgyz, is a Turkic language with traces of Mongolian. Many of them also speak Russian, which is the second language of the country. The Kyrgyz also consider the horse as an important part of their culture. They are considered as the "wings of the Kyrgyz", and were believed to carry the spirit of a dead person to another world. They also have national horse games, like Kyrgyz horse wrestling, "Ulak tariysh", "Kyz kuumai", and "Upai". Kyrgyzstan music can be described as "nomadic" and "rural". The main feature of their folk music includes long and sustained pitches, with influences of Russian elements. As for relationships, beautiful Kyrgyz women usually greet each other with hugs and handshakes. Relationships between males and females are also less rigid among Kyrgyzstanis compared to Uzbeks and Tajiks. Household tasks are commonly shared among men and women. The Kyrgyz are very hospitable people, and they usually serve cooked sheep's head to honor their guests. Traditionally, Kyrgyz people live in a "yurt". Today, most of them live in permanent homes in the city. Travel to Kyrgyzstan Those who have gone to Kyrgyzstan certainly recommend going back. Travel in Kyrgyzstan is friendly on the budget, but the flights can get really expensive. Plan out your trip carefully to get the most out of your stay in Kyrgyzstan. Going to Kyrgyzstan also gives travellers a feeling of excitement about discovering the unknown. Other popular places like China, Japan, Australia, Brazil, etc. have already been featured in a lot of travel magazines and even in online travel sites, and Kyrgyzstan is relatively untouched compared to these places. Kyrgyzstan is a country that has many things to offer the adventurous kind of traveller. If you are looking for places to visit in Central Asia, make sure you put Kyrgyzstan at the top of your list.

Regional Connectivity in South-Central Asia The South-Central Asian region has experienced important changes in the last decade, but anxieties related to the security of post-2014 Afghanistan have obscured how growing communication links, as well as road and rail infrastructures, are transforming the way regional countries connect with Afghanistan and with each other. The growth of Afghanistan's economy, fueled by international assistance and massive reconstruction, has also benefited the region. The web of multilateral and multi-level diplomatic engagement on energy exports, trade, and transportation has created important pathways for greater regional connectivity. However, tenuous political relations among countries in the region, adverse security environments, and poor infrastructure still remain key challenges to improving this connectivity. The absence of normalized relations between India and Pakistan is the single most important barrier. Regulatory issues and fraught politics have also prevented Pakistan and Afghanistan from exploiting their full trade potential. Besides negatively impacting bilateral trade, bottlenecks in Afghanistan-Pakistan have also prevented greater regional connectivity from occurring in South-Central Asia. So far, all of the notable initiatives focused on regional connectivity have remained limited to state-to-state cooperation under various multilateral platforms. While such public sector initiatives are important, they often suffer from bureaucratic inertia and can be held hostage by the political relationships among regional states. The New America Foundation is pleased to welcome Deputy Assistant Secretary Fatema Sumar for a discussion on ways to expand regional connectivity within South-Central Asia and to increase the participation of private-sector partners and businesses within the region. Participants Fatema Z. Negotiating Crisis in Central Asia with Dr. Eric McGlinchey, George Mason University Washington’s Eurasia analysts are anticipating the next crisis in Central Asia: What happens when the elderly autocrat dies? Will there be a new wave of deadly ethnic violence? Where will the region’s next popular uprising be? Anticipating crisis is critical. Equally critical is knowing which crisis responses work and which do not. McGlinchey reflects on twenty-five years of U.S. government crisis response in Central Asia. He asks what are lessons learned and how can these lessons be applied in support of Central Asian efforts to mitigate the downsides of state weakness and political instability. Dr. Eric McGlinchey is Associate Professor of Politics and Director of Political Science Graduate Studies at George Mason University’s School of Policy, Government, and International Affairs. He is the author of Chaos, Violence, Dynasty: Politics and Islam in Central Asia (2011). His current book project investigates bilateral and multilateral responses to crises in Eurasia. McGlinchey’s most recent article, “Fast Forwarding the Brezhnev Years: Osh in Flames,” (Russian History, Fall 2014) explores the precursors to southern Kyrgyzstan’s 2010 deadly ethnic riots. McGlinchey received his Ph.D. from Princeton University in 2003. The Annual Nava’i-Nalle Lecture is sponsored by the Center for Eurasian, Russian and East European Studies (CERES), Edmund A. Walsh School of Foreign Service, Georgetown University and is made possible through a generous gift from the Alfred Friendly Foundation. The Foundation endowed the lecture in honor of David Nalle, Executive Director of the Alfred Friendly Press Fellowship Program from its founding in 1983 to his retirement in 1992. The series is intended to foster public and academic interest in Central Asian affairs and, particularly, to encourage the work of younger scholars entering this field of study. In the Steppes of Central Asia (Russian: В средней Азии, V srednyeĭ Azii, literally In Central Asia) is the common English title for a "musical tableau" (or symphonic poem) by Alexander Borodin, composed in 1880. The work was originally intended to be presented as one of several tableaux vivants to celebrate the silver anniversary of the reign of Alexander II of Russia, who had done much to expand the Russian Empire eastward. The intended production never occurred, but the work itself became, and has remained, a concert favorite ever since its first concert performance, on 8 April 1880 (Old style) in St. Petersburg by the orchestra of the Russian Opera under the conductorship of Nikolai Rimsky-Korsakov. We mean the Scythians (and Sarmats) who came from Central Asia in the seventh century B.C., crossed the Caucasus and appeared in northern Iran and Asia Minor. Scythians may not have been Indo-European, but a mixture of nations of Central Asia, including some Turkish and Altaic elements. Their language, though remaining Iranian, carried a lot of borrowed non-Indo-European features. At the same time, we have to note that if our idea of the Scythian origin of the word *marḱ- is right, we are then dealing only with indirect contacts, maybe via Galatians, because this word was well-rooted in Celtic before Romanization and before Scythian and Sarmatic tribes moved to Europe in the second to third century A.D."source: Tatyana A. Ecological problems of one country directly influences environment of other states. For instance, smog in China threatens the entire world, scientists say. Қозоқча демократия Азаттык радиоси Франциянинг Ле-Ман шаҳрида жойлашган инсон ҳуқуқларини ҳимоя қилувчи Association for Human Rights in Central Asia

noodls 2015-04-09Central Asia is the core region of the Asian continent and stretches from the Caspian Sea in the west to China in the east and from Afghanistan in the south to Russia in the north. It is also sometimes referred to as Middle Asia, and, colloquially, "the 'stans" (as the five countries generally considered to be within the region all have names ending with that suffix) and is within the scope of the wider Eurasian continent.
In modern contexts, all definitions of Central Asia include these five republics of the former Soviet Union: Kazakhstan (pop. 16.6 million), Kyrgyzstan (5.5 million), Tajikistan (7.6 million), Turkmenistan (5.1 million), and Uzbekistan (29.5 million), for a total population of 64.7 million as of 2012. Other areas included are Afghanistan, Pakistan, Mongolia, and sometimes Xinjiang and Tibet in western China and southern Siberia in eastern Russia.
Various definitions of its exact composition exist, and no one definition is universally accepted. Despite this uncertainty in defining borders, it does have some important overall characteristics. For one, Central Asia has historically been closely tied to its nomadic peoples and the Silk Road. As a result, it has acted as a crossroads for the movement of people, goods, and ideas between Europe, West Asia, South Asia, and East Asia.
The Kyrgyz (also spelled Kirgiz, Kirghiz) are a Turkic people living primarily in Kyrgyzstan.
There are several etymological theories on the ethnonym "Kyrgyz."
The word "Kyrgyz" is derived from the Turkic word "forty", with -Iz being an old plural suffix, referring to a collection of forty tribes.
