"The flight control systems in the F-4 are basically models of simplicity. Yet reports from the field show that they're probably the least understood systems in the airplane. The purpose of this film is to generally acquaint F-4 pilots and ground crews with the operation of the control systems, and how to identify and troubleshoot possible malfunctions in the systems."
Public domain film, slightly cropped to remove uneven edges, with the aspect ratio corrected, and mild video noise reduction applied.
The soundtrack was also processed with volume normalization, noise reduction, clipping reduction, and/or equalization (the resulting sound, though not perfect, is far less noisy than the original).
There is a broadband hum in the vocal frequencies of this film which I cannot completely remove.

A conventional fixed-wing aircraft flight control system consists of flight control surfaces, the respective cockpit controls, connecting linkages, and the necessary operating mechanisms to control an aircraft's direction in flight. Aircraft engine controls are also considered as flight controls as they change speed.
The fundamentals of aircraft controls are explained in flight dynamics. This article centers on the operating mechanisms of the flight controls. The basic system in use on aircraft first appeared in a readily recognizable form as early as April 1908, on Louis Blériot's Blériot VIII pioneer-era monoplane design...
Cockpit controls
Primary controls
Generally, the primary cockpit flight controls are arranged as follows:
- a control yoke (also known as a control column), centre stick or side-stick (the latter two also colloquially known as a control or joystick), governs the aircraft's roll and pitch by moving the ailerons (or activating wing warping on some very early aircraft designs) when turned or deflected left and right, and moves the elevators when moved backwards or forwards
- rudder pedals, or the earlier, pre-1919 "rudder bar", to control yaw, which move the rudder; left foot forward will move the rudder left for instance.
- throttle controls to control engine speed or thrust for powered aircraft.
The control yokes also vary greatly amongst aircraft. There are yokes where roll is controlled by rotating the yoke clockwise/counterclockwise (like steering a car) and pitch is controlled by tilting the control column towards you or away from you, but in others the pitch is controlled by sliding the yoke into and out of the instrument panel (like most Cessnas, such as the 152 and 172), and in some the roll is controlled by sliding the whole yoke to the left and right (like the Cessna 162)...
Even when an aircraft uses variant flight control surfaces such as a V-tail ruddervator, flaperons, or elevons, to avoid pilot confusion the aircraft's flight control system will still be designed so that the stick or yoke controls pitch and roll conventionally, as will the rudder pedals for yaw....
Mechanical or manually operated flight control systems are the most basic method of controlling an aircraft. They were used in early aircraft and are currently used in small aircraft where the aerodynamic forces are not excessive...
A manual flight control system uses a collection of mechanical parts such as pushrods, tension cables, pulleys, counterweights, and sometimes chains to transmit the forces applied to the cockpit controls directly to the control surfaces. Turnbuckles are often used to adjust control cable tension. The Cessna Skyhawk is a typical example of an aircraft that uses this type of system...
Increases in the control surface area required by large aircraft or higher loads caused by high airspeeds in small aircraft lead to a large increase in the forces needed to move them, consequently complicated mechanical gearing arrangements were developed to extract maximum mechanical advantage in order to reduce the forces required from the pilots...
Some mechanical flight control systems use servo tabs that provide aerodynamic assistance. Servo tabs are small surfaces hinged to the control surfaces. The flight control mechanisms move these tabs, aerodynamic forces in turn move, or assist the movement of the control surfaces reducing the amount of mechanical forces needed...

In the present project, the use and application of optimization and advanced control strategies (multi-objective optimization, multivariable predictive control, etc.) in the design of flight control systems (FCS) for unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs) will be investigated.
The research stated, will attempt to show that modern optimization algorithms and process control techniques can be adapted to form part of the autopilot that use this type of unmanned aircraft. In this sense, the study is ambitious because it will replace the most common approach to the present moment autopilots (using different PID controllers designed for different operating points of the aircraft and an gain scheduling depending on flight mode), by an advanced control strategy, multivariable and robust as predictive control.
Multivariable predictive control is one of the few control methods have been applied successfully in other areas of engineering for industrial process control, and it manages in a natural way, contraints on the variables involved in the problem to solve. The specifics of the flight control systems and in particular the automatic pilot UAVs (fast and nonlinear dynamics, actuator constraints, etc.) pose an interesting challenge to investigate whether it is possible to develop automatic pilots with improved performances and more robust than current systems that are often equipped UAVs in today's market.
As objectives, this project proposes:
-Design of multivariable predictive control algorithms for flight control systems for fixed
wing UAVs.
-To develop all the software components (including the new drivers) and its integration
with various hardware elements (on-board computer, sensors and actuators) needed to build a prototype unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV) including the ground control station (GCS).
-Build and operate a platform for evaluation and testing of different control algorithms and systems for UAVs using techniques HIL (Hardware In the Loop).
-Realization of actual flight tests with the new flight control system design.
-Patenting the system designed for future commercial operations.

A control system is a device, or set of devices to manage, command, direct or regulate the behavior of other devices or system.
There are two common classes of control systems, with many variations and combinations: logic or sequential controls, and feedback or linear controls. There is also fuzzy logic, which attempts to combine some of the design simplicity of logic with the utility of linear control. Some devices or systems are inherently not controllable.
The term "control system" may be applied to the essentially manual controls that allow an operator, for example, to close and open a hydraulic press, perhaps including logic so that it cannot be moved unless safety guards are in place.
An automatic sequential control system may trigger a series of mechanical actuators in the correct sequence to perform a task. For example various electric and pneumatic transducers may fold and glue a cardboard box, fill it with product and then seal it in an automatic packaging machine.
In the case of linear feedback systems, a control loop, including sensors, control algorithms and actuators, is arranged in such a fashion as to try to regulate a variable at a setpoint or reference value. An example of this may increase the fuel supply to a furnace when a measured temperature drops. PID controllers are common and effective in cases such as this. Control systems that include some sensing of the results they are trying to achieve are making use of feedback and so can, to some extent, adapt to varying circumstances. Open-loop control systems do not make use of feedback, and run only in pre-arranged ways.

The research stated, will attempt to show that modern optimization algorithms and process control techniques can be adapted to form part of the autopilot that use this type of unmanned aircraft. A conventional fixed-wing aircraft flight control system consists of flight control surfaces, the respective cockpit controls, connecting linkages, and the necessary operating mechanisms to control an aircraft's direction in flight. Aircraft engine controls are also considered as flight controls as they change speed.
The fundamentals of aircraft controls are explained in flight dynamics. This article centers on the operating mechanisms of the flight controls. The basic system in use on aircraft first appeared in a readily recognizable form as early as April 1908, on Louis Blériot's Blériot VIII pioneer-era monoplane design...
Cockpit controls
Primary controls
Generally, the primary cockpit flight controls are arranged as follows:
- a control yoke (also known as a control column), centre stick or side-stick (the latter two also colloquially known as a control or joystick), governs the aircraft's roll and pitch by moving the ailerons (or activating wing warping on some very early aircraft designs) when turned or deflected left and right, and moves the elevators when moved backwards or forwards
- rudder pedals, or the earlier, pre-1919 "rudder bar", to control yaw, which move the rudder; left foot forward will move the rudder left for instance.
- throttle controls to control engine speed or thrust for powered aircraft.
The control yokes also vary greatly amongst aircraft. There are yokes where roll is controlled by rotating the yoke clockwise/counterclockwise (like steering a car) and pitch is controlled by tilting the control column towards you or away from you, but in others the pitch is controlled by sliding the yoke into and out of the instrument panel (like most Cessnas, such as the 152 and 172), and in some the roll is controlled by sliding the whole yoke to the left and right (like the Cessna 162)...
Even when an aircraft uses variant flight control surfaces such as a V-tail ruddervator, flaperons, or elevons, to avoid pilot confusion the aircraft's flight control system will still be designed so that the stick or yoke controls pitch and roll conventionally, as will the rudder pedals for yaw....
Mechanical or manually operated flight control systems are the most basic method of controlling an aircraft. They were used in early aircraft and are currently used in small aircraft where the aerodynamic forces are not excessive...
A manual flight control system uses a collection of mechanical parts such as pushrods, tension cables, pulleys, counterweights, and sometimes chains to transmit the forces applied to the cockpit controls directly to the control surfaces. Multivariable predictive control is one of the few control methods have been applied successfully in other areas of engineering for industrial process control, and it manages in a natural way, contraints on the variables involved in the problem to solve. The specifics of the flight control systems and in particular the automatic pilot UAVs (fast and nonlinear dynamics, actuator constraints, etc.) pose an interesting challenge to investigate whether it is possible to develop automatic pilots with improved performances and more robust than current systems that are often equipped UAVs in today's market.
As objectives, this project proposes:
-Design of multivariable predictive control algorithms for flight control systems for fixed
wing UAVs.
-To develop all the software components (including the new drivers) and its integration
with various hardware elements (on-board computer, sensors and actuators) needed to build a prototype unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV) including the ground control station (GCS).
-Build and operate a platform for evaluation and testing of different control algorithms and systems for UAVs using techniques HIL (Hardware In the Loop).
-Realization of actual flight tests with the new flight control system design.
-Patenting the system designed for future commercial operations.

(This video exists thanks to the inability to control a V686 outdoor in mild wind or breeze that finally is not only power plant weight to lift power ratio, but the impossibility of fighting wind using small systems below 250g because of inertia and high-low pressure lift blade seat wash-out that actual helicopters suffer - note: Newton meters are not calculated in these paradigm)

While there are flying demos in this video, these, as the talk is also, reasonably ad-hoc and are only to give you an idea of the capability of the drones to be controlled by an inexperienced(or intermittent short time) user such as myself.
There are a set of principals to being able to safely control a quad-copter. These are the "technical physics(radio , batteries)" aspects as much some "economic(consumables)" and type of "physical environment(weather , space)" the drone operates within relating "preventing control loss during flight".
It is found that toy quad drones cannot be controlled in a medium or heavy breeze, but quad drones over 22-23cm axle to axle center that are above 250g in weight can handle light wind (4 to 7meters per second constant).

A wind speed of "4m/s constant is a strong breeze" near light wind and the bigger quad-copter drones should only be flown away no more than 50 meters for 3 minutes at or above 4m/s with their 7.4v 1200mAh Lipo battery.(The manual rates the Tarantula-X6 as 5 minutes flight maximum - it does not account wind chewing the battery energy).The bigger drones can be flown further if there is somewhere to land for retrieval.
In one test (aerial photo only- not shown), a strong constant breeze of 4m/s to 7m/s gusts was in progress for the first 3 minutes of full battery test flight using the Tarantula-X6 out to 120 meters and a photo taken then return against the wind.
The battery was "reused for a second flight to the same position"
but the difficulty of the quad-copter to control caused aborting and landing it further away at around 200 meters radio control from start point in the paddock, The same as with the full battery in "Wind Flight test 3 T-X6(7ms-wind)" AVI.
(The tree is around 120 meters away from start point).
"Wind Flight test 4 T-X6(4ms-breeze)" shows a successful flight with the Tarantula-X6 using a full battery.
Tarantula X6 is more economic on battery power but requires sensitive nimble operation, whereas the V353 is easier to control but less responsive without power burst but remains easier all round to maneuver and fly.
Toy drones "the alike of" e.g. V686 are not able to handle wind beyond 3 meters a second(and should only bee flown inside or in properly wind shielded areas) - THEY ARE PROBABLY MOST OF THE REASON FOR MOST CRASHES AND THUS LAW UNREASONABLE LAW CHANGES AND BANS AGAINST DRONES, AS MUCH NON UNDERSTANDING THE SEVERE LIMITATIONS ANY SMALL ABSOLUTE-NON-PROFESSIONAL SIZE DRONES HAVE FOR POWER AND ITS' SUPPLY OF ELECTRICITY !!!!

The Phantom FC40, released in January, 2014, is an intermediate model between the Phantom 1 and the Phantom 2. Like the Phantom 2 Vision and the Phantom 2 Vision+, it is equipped with an iOS/Android app control, WI-FI and GPS modules. Using a 2.4G Wi-Fi connection, it helps its pilot follow in real time via aerial pictures on a mobile device. The camera angle is manually set before the flight and tilted by remote control.
Phantom 3[edit]
The Phantom 3, released in April 2015,[5] adds built in lightbridge downlink, that gives the controller a maximum range of 2,000 meters (1.25 miles), and the visual positioning system, that allows the Phantom 3 to better maintain its position at lower altitudes and even indoors where GPS is weak or unavailable.
The controller features a plastic front plate and lacks an HDMI out.
There are three models of the Phantom 3:
Professional: features 4K video recording and a 100 watt charger.
Advanced: features 2.7K video recording and a 57W charger.
Standard: release in August 2015, it is cheaper and features 2.7k video recording.

The Phantom FC40, released in January, 2014, is an intermediate model between the Phantom 1 and the Phantom 2. Like the Phantom 2 Vision and the Phantom 2 Vision+, it is equipped with an iOS/Android app control, WI-FI and GPS modules. Using a 2.4G Wi-Fi connection, it helps its pilot follow in real time via aerial pictures on a mobile device. The camera angle is manually set before the flight and tilted by remote control.

The Phantom 3, released in April 2015,[5] adds built in lightbridge downlink, that gives the controller a maximum range of 2,000 meters (1.25 miles), and the visual positioning system, that allows the Phantom 3 to better maintain its position at lower altitudes and even indoors where GPS is weak or unavailable.
The controller features a plastic front plate and lacks an HDMI out.
There are three models of the Phantom 3:
Professional: features 4K video recording and a 100 watt charger.
Advanced: features 2.7K video recording and a 57W charger.
Standard: release in August 2015, it is cheaper and features 2.7k video recording.

Based on NASA flight director Gene Kranz' autobiography "Failure is not an Option" this documentary traces the history of NASA Mission Control during the Mercury, Gemini and Apollo programs, with special emphasis on Apollo 1, 8, 11, 12 and 13. While Kranz' book often comes out as overly jingoistic and with an excess of pathos, this documentary strikes a good balance between depicting the historical background of the space race, the technical issues of spaceflight and the emotional impact on Mission Control personnel. It's a spectacular view from the pilot's cockpit as he receives instructions from the control tower when he is about to land the plane. You will never see footage like this anywhere else! You get a bird's eye-view of what goes on behind the scenes while you are sipping your chardonnay in your comfortable airline seat, while split-second decisions are being made on the ground and in the air. One future concept which might be explored is flying commercial airliners with no pilots or ground controllers - using computers alone to get you from and to your destinations at 30,000 feet in the air. Most passengers agree they would rather have flesh-and-blood people running the operation than computers which can crash - just as the computers we use at home and work have a habit of doing on a daily basis. Our lives are really in the hands of these qualified people when we are in their aircraft, and relying solely upon them to get us safely to where we are bound. A really insightful and informative program. You'll never think about commercial air flights the same again when you board a plane to fly somewhere. A REALLY, REALLY MUST WATCH!!!!

The Convair F-102 Delta Dagger is an American interceptor aircraft that was built as part of the backbone of the United States Air Force's air defenses in the late 1950s. Entering service in 1956, its main purpose was to intercept invading Soviet bomber fleets during the Cold War. Designed and manufactured by Convair, 1,000 F-102s were built.
A member of the Century Series, the F-102 was the first operational supersonic interceptor and delta-wing fighter of the USAF. It used an internal weapons bay to carry both guided missiles and rockets. As originally designed, it could not achieve Mach 1 supersonic flight until redesigned with area ruling. The F-102 replaced subsonic fighter types such as the Northrop F-89 Scorpion, and by the 1960s, it saw limited service in the Vietnam War in bomber escort and ground-attack roles. It was supplemented by McDonnell F-101 Voodoos and, later, by McDonnell Douglas F-4 Phantom IIs.
Many of the F-102s were transferred from the active duty Air Force to the Air National Guard by the mid-to-late 1960s, and with the exception of those examples converted to unmanned QF-102 Full Scale Aerial Target (FSAT) drones, the type was totally retired from operational service in 1976. The follow-on replacement was the Mach-2 Convair F-106 Delta Dart, which was an extensive redesign of the F-102...

To solve the problem and save the F-102, Convair embarked on a major redesign, incorporating the recently discovered area rule, while at the same time simplifying production and maintenance. The redesign entailed lengthening the fuselage by 11 ft (3.35 m) and "pinched" at the midsection (dubbed the "Coke Bottle configuration"), with two large fairings on either side of the engine nozzle, with revised intakes and a new, narrower canopy. A more powerful model of J57 was fitted, and the aircraft structure was lightened.
The first revised aircraft, designated YF-102A flew on 20 December 1954, 118 days after the redesign started, exceeding Mach 1 the next day. The revised design demonstrated a speed of Mach 1.22 and a ceiling of 53,000 ft (16,154 m)...
The production F-102A had the Hughes MG-3 fire control system, later upgraded in service to the MG-10. It had a three-segment internal weapons bay under the fuselage for air-to-air missiles. Initial armament was three pairs of GAR-1/2/3/4 (Later re-designated as AIM-4) Falcon missiles, which included both infrared and semi-active radar homing variants. The doors of the two forward bays each had tubes for 12 FFARs (for a total of 24) with initially 2 in (5.1 cm) being fitted and later 2.75 in (70 mm) replacing them. The F-102 was later upgraded to allow the carriage of up to two GAR-11/AIM-26 Nuclear Falcon missiles in the center bay. The larger size of this weapon required redesigned center bay doors with no rocket tubes. Plans were considered to fit the MB-1 Genie nuclear rocket to the design, but although a Genie was test fired from a YF-102A in May 1956, it was never adopted...

Working in Mission control was obviously the high point of their lives, so there is a slightly nostalgic note to their account.

Space buffs will miss technical details, and not much is being said about the system of shifts in Mission Control, that is, how "colourcoded" teams managed the job of mission control 24/7. Also, the focus is very much on the telegenic Gene Kranz, to the detriment of the other mission directors and controllers. This is probably unavoidable when we're dealing with the TV medium, which needs easy-to-follow stories and a captivating protagonist.

It is emotional to hear the story of NASA's crises and triumphs, re-told 40 years on by the men who were actually there. Based on NASA flight director Gene Kranz' autobiography "Failure is not an Option" this documentary traces the history of NASA Mission Control during the Mercury, Gemini and Apollo programs, with special emphasis on Apollo 1, 8, 11, 12 and 13.
While Kranz' book often comes out as overly jingoistic and with an excess of pathos, this documentary strikes a good balance between depicting the historical background of the space race, the technical issues of spaceflight and the emotional impact on Mission Control personnel.
To people very familiar with the events of US manned spaceflight in those years, there is not much new information to be gained from the documentary.
