"Alone" is a song composed by Billy Steinberg and Tom Kelly. It first appeared via Steinberg and Kelly's 1983 pet project, I-Ten, on Taking a Cold Look. It was later recorded by Valerie Stevenson and John Stamos in their roles as Lisa Copley and Gino Minelli, on the original soundtrack of the CBS sitcom Dreams in 1984. American rock band Heart made it a number one US and Canadian hit in 1987. Twenty years later, Celine Dion recorded it for her album Taking Chances. The song was sold to Heart and released as the first single from their ninth studio album Bad Animals in May 1987. Heart's version is a power ballad that begins with a piano line and a subdued vocal from Ann Wilson before exploding into an amplified hard rock, albeit heavily synth-led chorus. The song has been covered numerous times on American Idol as well as by artists such as Celine Dion, but is viewed as being exceptionally difficult to sing.[citation needed] According to a Songfacts interview with Steinberg, Kelly (an experienced session singer) provided the high harmony parts on the record. "Alone" is Heart's biggest hit, spending three weeks at number 1 on the U.S. Billboard Hot 100 that July. It ranked number 2 on the Billboard Year-End Top Pop Singles of 1987. It is also their most successful single in the United Kingdom, where it peaked at number 3 on the UK Singles Chart, so far as the band's only ever song to peak inside the UK Top 5; it is also one out of three UK Top 10 singles by the band. The song was also a huge global hit, reaching number one in Canada, the top five in Ireland, Norway, and Switzerland, the top ten in Australia, Belgium, the Netherlands, and Poland as well as the top twenty in Germany. The song's popular video featured the band in a synched live performance. An "unplugged" version of the song later appeared on Heart's 1995 album The Road Home. An extended version of "Alone" clocking in at 5:30 was released in Japan as the B-side to Heart's third single from "Bad Animals", "There's the Girl". This "Long Version" is exclusive to this 3" mini-CD single, and not found on any other release. Celine Dion covered "Alone" for her ninth English studio album Taking Chances (2007). William Daro "Billy" Bean (born May 11, 1964) is a retired American professional baseball player. He played in Major League Baseball as an outfielder for the Detroit Tigers (1987-1989), Los Angeles Dodgers (1989), and San Diego Padres (1993-1995), as well as the Kintetsu Buffaloes of Nippon Professional Baseball in 1992. He publicly came out as gay in 1999. Bean was an outfielder, and left-handed hitter, with 487 at bats with a .226 batting average in a career that lasted from 1987 through 1995: Detroit Tigers 1987-1989, Los Angeles Dodgers 1989, San Diego Padres 1993–1995. He played for the Kintetsu Buffaloes in Japan in 1992. After acknowledging that he is gay, Bean went on to write a book, Going the Other Way: Lessons from a Life in and out of Major League Baseball. Bean is the second Major League Baseball player who has ever revealed his homosexuality. Billy Bean came out after his retirement. Glenn Burke was the first to come out to his teammates and employers during his playing days, though Burke didn't come out to the public at large until his career was over. He was a panelist on GSN's I've Got A Secret revival in 2006, and is a board member of the Gay and Lesbian Athletics Foundation. In the summer of 2007, it was announced that he had been hired as a consultant by Scout Productions, the team of David Collins and Michael Williams, who produced Bravo's Queer Eye for the Straight Guy, for their next project with Showtime entitled The Beard. The project is a romantic comedy about a gay professional baseball player who enters into a relationship with a woman in order to survive in the sports world. Bean starred in a MTV episode of Made, he was an actor in an episode of the sitcom Frasier and appeared as himself on the HBO series Arli$$ in the 2002 episode "Playing it Safe". Bean was appointed MLB's first "Ambassador for Inclusion" on July 15, 2014.
