Music by Clem Tholet, pictures from various sources. The world forgets. Lyrics: Here's the story of Rhodesia, A land both fair and great. On 11th of November An independent state. This was much against the wishes Of certain governments, Whose leaders tried to break us down, To make us all repent. Chorus: But we're all Rhodesians And we'll fight through thick and thin. We'll keep our land a free land, Stop the enemy coming in. We'll keep them north of the Zambezi 'Til that river's running dry. This mighty land will prosper For Rhodesians never die. They can send their men to murder And they can shout their words of hate. But the cost of keeping this land free Can never be too great. For our men and boys are fighting For the things that they hold dear. That this land and all its people Will never disappear. Chorus We'll preserve this little nation, For our children's children too. For once you're a Rhodesian, No other land will do We will stand forth in the sunshine, With the truth upon our side. And if we have to go alone, We'll go alone with pride. Chorus

Did you know that the Victoria Falls bridge was a brainchild of John Cecil Rhodes as part of this grand and unfulfilled dream to create an economic Transport system from Cape to Cairo? In this Episode of Today with Zamtel, I had the opportunity to explore History bits and pieces of the British South Africa Company (The BSA) and its economic interests in Northern Rhodesia Present day Zambia. Our Production crew focuses on how John Cecil Rhodes the founder of the British South Africa Company pushed British influence into the region of present day Zambia as part of the Scramble for Africa by obtaining mineral rights from local chiefs under questionable treaties. We also highlight his dream to extend the British Empire north, linking the Cape of Good Hope and Cairo. Description
-------------------**English**------------------- When Rhodesia first declared its independence in 1965, it was a member of the British Commonwealth, and retained the Queen as the head of state, therefore “God Save the Queen” was the national anthem until Rhodesia became a republic in 1970, and ties were severed with the United Kingdom. Rhodesia then did not have a national anthem until a national competition was held and Mary Bloom’s “Voices of Rhodesia” was declared as the anthem on 26th August 1974. (The title soon became popularly known as the entire first line of the lyrics). Using Beethoven’s “Ode to Joy” (which was also used at the time as the anthem of the European Union, and still is today) as the melody, the lyrics were composed by a South African born resident of Gwelo. Use of an anthem that had the same tune as the European anthem, and a well-known classical work, has caused problems in both Rhodesia (later Zimbabwe) and Europe as well. During the period from 1970 to 1979, when ties between the Rhodesian and British governments were severed; at European Union events, hearing an anthem that was also associated with Rhodesia led for some uncomfortable moments for British delegations. Rhodesia’s choice of the anthem was accepted by the European Union, as the basic piece was in the public domain, and Rhodesia had used a different arrangement. After Rhodesia was transitioned to a majority-rule country and renamed Zimbabwe, the performance of the Beethoven work inside Zimbabwe has been met with derision, due to its association with the Rhodesian government. In June of 1979, the white majority rule was ended and the country was renamed Zimbabwe-Rhodesia. I am unsure whether this anthem was used in Zimbabwe-Rhodesia as the sole national anthem, if it was a part of the anthem (perhaps combined with “God Bless Africa”, similar to what is currently being done in South Africa), or if it was not used at all. Control of Zimbabwe-Rhodesia was returned to British rule starting in December 1979 when the name Southern Rhodesia was assumed, and God Save the Queen was again the national anthem until full international recognition was achieved as Zimbabwe in April 1980.
●▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬ஜ۩ENGLISH۩ஜ▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬● "Rise, O Voices of Rhodesia" (or "Voices of Rhodesia") was the national anthem of the unrecognised state of Rhodesia (renamed Zimbabwe in 1980) between 1974 and 1979. The tune was that of "Ode to Joy", the Fourth Movement from Ludwig van Beethoven's Ninth Symphony, which had been adopted as the official European Anthem by the Council of Europe in 1972 (it remains Europe's anthem today). The music used in Rhodesia was an original sixteen-bar arrangement by Captain Ken MacDonald, the bandmaster of the Rhodesian African Rifles. A national competition was organised by the government to find an appropriate set of lyrics to match the chosen tune, and won by Mary Bloom, a South African-born woman living in Gwelo. In the fallout from Rhodesia's Unilateral Declaration of Independence from Britain on 11 November 1965, the country still claimed loyalty to Queen Elizabeth II as its professed head of state, and so retained "God Save the Queen" as its national anthem. With Rhodesia's reconstitution in 1970 as a republic, however, the royal anthem was dropped along with many other references to the monarchy. The Republic of Rhodesia lacked a national anthem until it adopted "Rise, O Voices of Rhodesia" in 1974. The national anthem lost its legal status in December 1979, when the UK took interim control of the country pending its internationally recognised independence as Zimbabwe five months later. Rhodesia's use of the well-known Beethoven tune has since caused the playing of "Ode to Joy" to be controversial in modern-day Zimbabwe. ●▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬ஜ۩FRANÇAIS۩ஜ▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬● Rise O Voices of Rhodesia était l'hymne national de la République de Rhodésie de 1974 à 1979. (2009 Gweru)

As I continued my search through the Russian Archive I found a South African FAL that had sterile markings for the Rhodesians and was captured later captured in Angola. The Rhodesian 'bush war' was the most prolonged conflict the FAL was ever used. It served with distinction and now the 'baby poop' camo paint of the "Rhodie" FAL is seen as a badge of honor for a rifle that left the battle unvanquished. Enjoy! News24 2015-03-21Rhodesia (UK /roʊˈdiːʃə/; US /roʊˈdiːʒə/), officially the Republic of Rhodesia from 1970, was an unrecognised state located in southern Africa that existed between 1965 and 1979 following its Unilateral Declaration of Independence from the United Kingdom on 11 November 1965. With its government based at the former colonial capital of Salisbury, its territory consisted of the former British colony of Southern Rhodesia. The state was named after Cecil John Rhodes, whose British South Africa Company acquired the land in the 19th century.
The landlocked country bordered South Africa to the south, Botswana (post-1966) to the southwest, Zambia to the northwest and Mozambique (a Portuguese territory until 1975) to the east. The state was governed by a predominantly white minority government until 1979, initially as a self-governing colony then, after the Unilateral Declaration of Independence, as a self-proclaimed sovereign Dominion, and latterly a Republic.
Clem Tholet (1948 – 6 October 2004) was a Rhodesian folk singer who became popular in the 1970s for his Rhodesian patriotic songs. He reached the height of his fame during the Rhodesian Bush War.
Clem was born in Salisbury, Southern Rhodesia in 1948 and began writing songs while he was an art student in Durban, South Africa. One of his first songs, Vagabond Gun was a category winner in the South Africa Music Festival in 1966. Clem later moved back to Rhodesia to work in advertising. He started singing at Rhodesia’s first folk venue, The Troubadour in Salisbury’s Angwa Street. While performing there, he met Sue Eccles and Andy Dillon. The three formed a trio called The Kinfolk. The group moved to South Africa, and shortly after moving to Johannesburg, Sue left the group.
Clem and Andy formed a new group with Yvonne Raff, which they called The Legend Trio. This new trio began singing at the original Southern African “Troubadour”, and were also involved in a number of SAFMA’s National Folk Fests.
