The Sinai Peninsula or Sinai (Arabic: سيناء sīnā' ; Hebrew סיני) is a triangular peninsula in Egypt about 60,000 km2 (23,000 sq mi) in area. It is situated between the Mediterranean Sea to the north, and the Red Sea to the south, and is the only part of Egyptian territory located in Asia as opposed to Africa, effectively serving as a land bridge between two continents. The bulk of the peninsula is divided administratively into two of Egypt's 27 governorates (with three more straddling the Suez Canal area), and has a population of approximately 500,000 people. In addition to its formal name, Egyptians also refer to it affectionately as the "Land of Fayrouz", based on the Ancient Egyptian "Dumafkat", which has the same meaning.
The region has historically been the centre of conflict between various states, based largely on its strategic geopolitical location. In addition to periods of direct rule by Egyptian governments (including the Ayyubids, the Mamluks, the Muhammad Ali Dynasty, and the modern Egyptian republic), it was like the rest of Egypt, also occupied and controlled by the Ottoman Empire, and the United Kingdom (which occupied Egypt from 1882 until 1956). Israel invaded and occupied Sinai during the Suez Crisis (known in Egypt as the Tripartite Aggression) of 1956, and during the Six Day War of 1967. On 6 October 1973, Egypt launched the October War to liberate the peninsula, which was the site of fierce fighting between Egyptian and Israeli forces. In 1982, after the Israel-Egypt Peace Treaty of 1979, Israel withdrew from the entirety of Sinai. Today, Sinai has become a tourist destination due to its natural setting, rich coral reefs, and biblical history. Mount Sinai is one of the most religiously significant places in Abrahamic faiths.

A armed group in Egypt has released a video showing what it claims is footage of an attack on the army in Sinai last month in which at least 30 soldiers were killed.
The group, formerly known as Ansar Bayt Almaqdis, says in the video that it now swears allegiance to the Islamic State in Iraq and the Levant (ISIL) and has renamed itself Wilayat Sinai.
Wilayat Sinai said in the video that it had taken up arms in response to the army's campaign to forcibly transfer people from the peninsula.
Al Jazeera cannot independently verify the video's authenticity,
Al Jazeera's Jamal Elshayyal reports.

Sinai Travel - The Sinai Peninsula, often shortened to Sinai (Arabic: سيناء sīnā' ; Hebrew סיני) is the easternmost part of Egypt between the Mediterranean and the Gulfs of Suez and Aqaba, both forks of the Red Sea. The western and northern coasts are practically uninhabited, but several Bedouin settlements and tourist attractions dot the eastern coast.
Above ground is a harsh, forbidding and (in summer) brutally hot desert of parched rock. The reason most tourists come here are the vistas underwater: the Sinai coast offers some of the best diving in the world. The region is also important because of its places of importance in the Abrahamic religions.
In 1967, Israel invaded and took control over the entire peninsula. The Suez Canal, the east bank of which was controlled by Israel, was closed. In 1979 Israel and Egypt signed a peace treaty. Israel pulled out of Sinai in several stages, including the removal of its settlements which ended in 1982.
The tourist cities are built around previous Israeli settlements. While the original population are bedouin, most of the staff and workers in this area come from Lower Egypt and especially the canal cities.
Al Tor is the regional center of Southern Sinai, which includes Dahab, Nuweiba and Sharm. Al-Arish is the regional center of less visited Northern Sinai, close to Rafah and the border to the Gaza strip.

The whole footage was filmed on two dives in January 2014 with a GoPro 3, a Red Filter and in some scenes I tried out my SOLA 800 Dive light. Ever been to the magical place Dahab?
Check out this video, where I was diving the beautiful Bannerfish Bay in the heart of Masbat Bay in Dahab, Egypt with Sinai Divers Backpackers. The whole footage was filmed on two dives in January 2014 with a GoPro 3, a Red Filter and in some scenes I tried out my SOLA 800 Dive light. In addition to the fish seen in the video there are frequent sightings of turtles, nudi branches, ghost pipe fish, a frogfish, Napoleon fish, tuna, squids and even dolphins!
Enjoy this video and please help to protect the oceans by diving carefully and collecting rubbish if you see it!
During my six months in Dahab I was lucky to do a lot of dives with Sinai Divers Backpackers and H2O Divers - both of them excellent dive centers. While I was doing a lot of fun diving and admiring the beauty and majesty of the underwater world, I also participated in two marine research programs of the Red Sea Environmental Center (RSEC), where we investigated the condition of reefs using standardised Reef Check Survey methods.
I was made aware of many of the problems concerning the oceans around our planet. Funny enough we depend on them but nowadays they also depend on us. We´ve been littering, fishing polluting and destroying marine habitats for a long time. If we don´t change our behaviour, we will eventually loose the oceans. And with it our planet earth. So we are kind of destroying ourselves by destryoing the oceans.
There´s a lot every individual can do: Consider your own consumer behaviour and if possible stop eating fish. Don´t litter into the rivers, oceans or wherever. Don´t use plastic products when it is not necessary. Particpate in marine cleaning programs etc..
It is a wonderful world once you sink beneath the surface, but we all have to help to keep it the way it is now. Together we can make a positive change and spread the word further and further.

ISIL-affiliate posts 'video of Sinai attack'
A armed group in Egypt has released a video showing what it claims is footage of an attack on the army in Sinai last month in which at least 30 soldiers were killed. The group, formerly known as Ansar Bayt Almaqdis, says in the video that it now swears allegiance to the Islamic State in Iraq and the Levant (ISIL) and has renamed itself Wilayat Sinai. Wilayat Sinai said in the video that it had taken up arms in response to the army's campaign to forcibly transfer people from the peninsula. Al Jazeera cannot independently verify the video's authenticity, Al Jazeera's Jamal Elshayyal reports. Sinai Travel - The Sinai Peninsula, often shortened to Sinai (Arabic: سيناء sīnā' ; Hebrew סיני) is the easternmost part of Egypt between the Mediterranean and the Gulfs of Suez and Aqaba, both forks of the Red Sea. The western and northern coasts are practically uninhabited, but several Bedouin settlements and tourist attractions dot the eastern coast. Above ground is a harsh, forbidding and (in summer) brutally hot desert of parched rock. The reason most tourists come here are the vistas underwater: the Sinai coast offers some of the best diving in the world. The region is also important because of its places of importance in the Abrahamic religions. In 1967, Israel invaded and took control over the entire peninsula. The Suez Canal, the east bank of which was controlled by Israel, was closed. In 1979 Israel and Egypt signed a peace treaty. Israel pulled out of Sinai in several stages, including the removal of its settlements which ended in 1982. The tourist cities are built around previous Israeli settlements. While the original population are bedouin, most of the staff and workers in this area come from Lower Egypt and especially the canal cities. Al Tor is the regional center of Southern Sinai, which includes Dahab, Nuweiba and Sharm. Al-Arish is the regional center of less visited Northern Sinai, close to Rafah and the border to the Gaza strip. Enjoy Your Sinai Travel!- published: 10 Aug 2014

Ever been to the magical place Dahab? Check out this video, where I was diving the beautiful Bannerfish Bay in the heart of Masbat Bay in Dahab, Egypt with Sinai Divers Backpackers. The whole footage was filmed on two dives in January 2014 with a GoPro 3, a Red Filter and in some scenes I tried out my SOLA 800 Dive light. In addition to the fish seen in the video there are frequent sightings of turtles, nudi branches, ghost pipe fish, a frogfish, Napoleon fish, tuna, squids and even dolphins! Enjoy this video and please help to protect the oceans by diving carefully and collecting rubbish if you see it! During my six months in Dahab I was lucky to do a lot of dives with Sinai Divers Backpackers and H2O Divers - both of them excellent dive centers. While I was doing a lot of fun diving and admiring the beauty and majesty of the underwater world, I also participated in two marine research programs of the Red Sea Environmental Center (RSEC), where we investigated the condition of reefs using standardised Reef Check Survey methods. I was made aware of many of the problems concerning the oceans around our planet. Funny enough we depend on them but nowadays they also depend on us. We´ve been littering, fishing polluting and destroying marine habitats for a long time. If we don´t change our behaviour, we will eventually loose the oceans. And with it our planet earth. So we are kind of destroying ourselves by destryoing the oceans. There´s a lot every individual can do: Consider your own consumer behaviour and if possible stop eating fish. Don´t litter into the rivers, oceans or wherever. Don´t use plastic products when it is not necessary. Particpate in marine cleaning programs etc.. It is a wonderful world once you sink beneath the surface, but we all have to help to keep it the way it is now. Together we can make a positive change and spread the word further and further.
