In this highly anticipated, explosive new book, the author of The End of Faith and Letter to a Christian Nation calls for an end to religion's monopoly on morality and human values. In The Moral Landscape: How Science Can Determine Human Values, Sam Harris tears down the wall between scientific facts and human values to dismantle the most common justification for religious faith -- that a moral system cannot be based on science. The End of Faith ignited a worldwide debate about the validity of religion. In its aftermath, Harris discovered that most people, from secular scientists to religious fundamentalists, agree on one point: Science has nothing to say on the subject of human values. Even among religious fundamentalists, the defense one most often hears for belief in God is not that there is compelling evidence that God exists, but that faith in Him provides the only guidance for living a good life. Controversies about human values are controversies about which science has officially had no opinion. Until now. Morality, Harris argues, is actually an undeveloped branch of neuroscience, and answers to questions of human value can be visualized on a "moral landscape" -- a space of real and potential outcomes whose peaks and valleys correspond to human states of greater or lesser wellbeing. Different ways of thinking and behaving -- different cultural practices, ethical codes, modes of government, etc. -- translate into movements across this landscape. Such changes can be analyzed objectively on many levels, ranging from biochemistry to economics, but they have their crucial realization as experiences in the human brain. Bringing a fresh, secular perspective to age-old questions of right and wrong, and good and evil, Harris shows that we know enough about the human brain and its relationship to events in the world to say that there are right and wrong answers to the most pressing questions of human life. Because such answers exist, cultural relativism is simply false -- and comes at increasing cost to humanity. And just as there is no such thing as Christian physics or Muslim algebra, there can be no Christian or Muslim morality. Using his expertise in philosophy and neuroscience, along with his experience on the front lines of our "culture wars," Sam Harris delivers a game-changing argument about the future of science and about the real basis of human cooperation. 11.10.10 Berkeley Arts and Letters First Congregational Church of Berkeley (2345 Channing Way at Dana, Berkeley) Berkeley, CA Sam Harris is the author of the New York Times bestsellers, The End of Faith and Letter to a Christian Nation. Newsclick interviewed civil rights activist Teesta Setalvad on the the communal agenda of the Modi government and its contradiction with the secular values of the state. She says that the current government is guided by an unconstitutional body with a majoritarian agenda -- the RSS -- and hence the attack on secular values is bound to continue. The long term roadmap of the RSS is to convert the Indian nation into a Hindu Rashtra. According to her, hate mongering is being done to provoke the minority and in response, plan another massacre like Gujarat riots . Teesta feels that in order to reclaim the secular nature of the state, not only the secular political parties, but also intelligentsia and the social activists have an important role to play. Building movements on the ground for democratic and secular values is the only way forward.
"Humanism is a progressive philosophy of life that, without supernaturalism, affirms our ability and responsibility to lead ethical lives of personal fulfillment that aspire to the greater good of humanity." -Humanist Manifesto III How do secular people find purpose in their life? This is not an abstract question: recent research shows that a sense of purpose is vital for human well-being. Yet unlike for religious people, purpose is not clearly laid out for nonbelievers. This talk will illuminate the various ways that secular people have found purpose and meaning in their life, and suggest some empowering strategies for doing so. It will combine insights drawn from recent psychological and neuroscience research, writings by secular thinkers, and the presenter’s experience of running a series of events where secular people discussed the meanings and values they find in their lives. Gleb Tsipursky, PhD, is the Co-Founder and Chief Insights Officer of Intentional Insights. Its mission is to promote rational thinking and thus the secularization of society in a subtle and innovative way – by tying it to self-interest. We get rid of the “woo” ubiquitous in the field of self-improvement and leadership development and apply only research-based approaches to illustrate how rational thinking helps people achieve their goals. For secular audiences in particular, we offer workshops, professional development, and online resources with evidence-based strategies for how individuals, teams, and organizations can make effective decisions, manage relationships, minimize stress, and reach their goals; on research-informed strategies for promoting secular causes; on scientific findings that help secular people find purpose, meaning, and happiness; finally, on how research informs the best practices for interfaith engagement. Gleb Tsipursky is also a tenure-track professor at The Ohio State University, specializing in analyzing decision-making and goal achievement in historical contexts. Together with his spouse, Agnes Vishnevkin, he runs the “Values and Meanings” HCCO event.

noodls 2015-04-10Secular ethics is a branch of moral philosophy in which ethics is based solely on human faculties such as logic, reason or moral intuition, and not derived from purported supernatural revelation or guidance (which is the source of religious ethics). Secular ethics comprises any ethical system that does not draw on the supernatural, such as humanism, secularism and freethinking.
The majority of secular moral systems accept either the normativity of social contracts, some form of attribution of intrinsic moral value, intuition-based deontology, or cultural moral relativism. A smaller minority believe scientific reasoning can reveal moral truth. This is known as science of morality. Approaches like utilitarianism, subjective moral relativism, and ethical egoism are less common, but still maintain a significant following among secular ethicists.[citation needed] Little attention is paid to the positions of moral skepticism and moral nihilism; however, many religious and some secular ethicists believe that secular morality cannot exist without a god or gods to provide ontological grounding, or is at least impossible to apprehend apart from authoritative revelation.
The Dalai Lama is a high lama in the Gelug or "Yellow Hat" branch of Tibetan Buddhism. The name is a combination of the Sino-Mongolian word далай (dalai) meaning "Ocean" and the Tibetan word བླ་མ་ bla-ma (with a silent "b") meaning "chief, high priest".
In religious terms, the Dalai Lama is believed by his devotees to be the rebirth of a long line of tulkus who are considered to be manifestations of the bodhisattva of compassion, Avalokiteśvara. Traditionally, the Dalai Lama is thought of as the latest reincarnation of a series of spiritual leaders who have chosen to be reborn in order to enlighten others. The Dalai Lama is often thought to be the leader of the Gelug School, but this position belongs officially to the Ganden Tripa, which is a temporary position appointed by the Dalai Lama who, in practice, exerts much influence. The line of Dalai Lamas began as a lineage of spiritual teachers; the 5th Dalai Lama assumed political authority over Tibet.
For certain periods between the 17th century and 1959, the Dalai Lamas sometimes directed the Tibetan government, which administered portions of Tibet from Lhasa. The 14th Dalai Lama remained the head of state for the Central Tibetan Administration ("Tibetan government in exile") until his retirement on March 14, 2011. He has indicated that the institution of the Dalai Lama may be abolished in the future, and also that the next Dalai Lama may be found outside Tibet and may be female. The Chinese government was very quick to reject this and claimed that only it has the authority to select the next Dalai Lama.
