Aggie Greys Resort ( www.aggiegreys.com ) is located close to the international airport so is the perfect place to stay after the flight and relax before embarking on your Samoan adventure. The rooms are comfortable and overlook the stunning lagoon area. They also provide free bottled water in the room. We had an overnight flight so we freshened up before heading out for a dive with Aqua Samoa ( http://www.aquasamoa.com ) in the warm waters of the surrounding coral reefs and lagoons. The colourful plate corals were stunning and the warm water made for a comfortable and enjoyable dive. Back at the resort it was time to relax and enjoy a few cocktails in the pool bar and on their secluded lagoon beach. There are a few different restaurants there to enjoy a meal at too. Close to the resort is Manono Wharf, where you can head over to Manono Island for a day. It is only 4km from Upolu and you can jump on a boat to take you over there for as little as a few dollars per person, however these can be very infrequent with no real guaranteed departure times. So you can also organise a private boat for a return journey from about SAT$60. Visiting the island is like taking a step back in time and there are no dogs or cars there, only a walking track that takes you around the island and the 4 villages that make up this island. There is also overnight accommodation f you want to stay longer and really get in to the traditional lifestyle there and escape the outside world for a few days. We then head in to Apia, Samoa's capital city. This is a buzzing and vibrant city with a lot going on. We stayed at the iconic Aggie Greys Hotel while here. This hotel is one of the longest running in Samoa and has a very rich history. We were also lucky enought o be here on their Fia Fia Cultural night, which is an extravaganza of traditional dancing, music and food ( http://www.aggiegreys.com ) For more of our 2013 Samoa travel video guides visit one of our travel channel http://www.funtraveltv.com http://www.intowaterandbeyond.com
Fiji (Listeni/ˈfiːdʒiː/ fee-jee Fijian: Viti; Fiji Hindi: फ़िजी), officially the Republic of Fiji (Fijian: Matanitu Tugalala o Viti;[9] Fiji Hindi: रिपब्लिक ऑफ फीजी Ripablik ăph Phījī), is an island country in Melanesia in the South Pacific Ocean about 1,100 nautical miles (2,000 km; 1,300 mi) northeast of New Zealand's North Island. Its closest neighbours are Vanuatu to the west, New Caledonia to the southwest, New Zealand's Kermadec Islands to the southeast, Tonga to the east, the Samoas and France's Wallis and Futuna to the northeast, and Tuvalu to the north. Fiji is an archipelago of more than 332 islands, of which 110 are permanently inhabited, and more than 500 islets, amounting to a total land area of about 18,300 square kilometres (7,100 sq mi). The farthest island is Onu-i-Lau. The two major islands, Viti Levu and Vanua Levu, account for 87% of the population of almost 860,000. The capital and largest city, Suva, is on Viti Levu. About three-quarters of Fijians live on Viti Levu's coasts, either in Suva or in smaller urban centres like Nadi (tourism) or Lautoka (sugar cane industry). Viti Levu's interior is sparsely inhabited due to its terrain. Fiji has one of the most developed economies in the Pacific due to an abundance of forest, mineral, and fish resources. Today, the main sources of foreign exchange are its tourist industry and sugar exports. The country's currency is the Fijian dollar. Fiji's local government, in the form of city and town councils, is supervised by the Ministry of Local Government and Urban Development. The majority of Fiji's islands were formed through volcanic activity starting around 150 million years ago. Today, some geothermal activity still occurs on the islands of Vanua Levu and Taveuni. Fiji has been inhabited since the second millennium BC, and was settled first by Austronesians and later by Melanesians, with some Polynesian influences. Europeans visited Fiji from the 17th century, and, after a brief period as an independent kingdom, the British established the Colony of Fiji in 1874. Fiji was a Crown colony until 1970, when it gained independence as a Commonwealth realm. A republic was declared in 1987, following a series of coups d'état. In a coup in 2006, Commodore Frank Bainimarama seized power. When the High Court ruled in 2009 that the military leadership was unlawful, President Ratu Josefa Iloilo, whom the military had retained as the nominal Head of State, formally abrogated the Constitution and reappointed Bainimarama. Later in 2009, Iloilo was replaced as President by Ratu Epeli Nailatikau. After years of delays, a democratic election was held on 17 September 2014. Bainimarama's FijiFirst party won with 59.2% of the vote, and the election was deemed credible by international observers. History Pottery art from Fijian towns shows that Fiji was settled before or around 3500 to 1000 BC, although the question of Pacific migration still lingers. It is believed that the Lapita people or the ancestors of the Polynesians settled the islands first but not much is known of what became of them after the Melanesians arrived; they may have had some influence on the new culture, and archaeological evidence shows that they would have then moved on to Samoa, Tonga and even Hawai'i. The first settlements in Fiji were started by voyaging traders and settlers from the west about 5000 years ago. Lapita pottery shards have been found at numerous excavations around the country. Aspects of Fijian culture are similar to the Melanesian culture of the western Pacific but have a stronger connection to the older Polynesian cultures. Trade between these three nations[clarification needed] long before European contact is quite obvious with canoes made from native Fijian trees found in Tonga and Tongan words being part of the language of the Lau group of islands. Pots made in Fiji have been found in Samoa and even the Marquesas Islands.

Pacific Documentation - Lost World of The Pacific - Polynesian Islands Documentary Polynesia is characterized by a small amount of land spread over a very large portion of the mid and southern Pacific Ocean. Most Polynesian islands and archipelagos, including the Hawaiian Islands and Samoa, are composed of volcanic islands built by hotspots. New Zealand, Norfolk Island, and Ouvéa, the Polynesian outlier near New Caledonia, are the unsubmerged portions of the largely sunken continent of Zealandia. Zealandia is believed to have mostly sunk by 23 m.y.a. and resurfaced geologically recently due to a change in the movements of the Pacific Plate in relation to the Indo-Australian plate, which served to uplift the New Zealand portion. At first, the Pacific plate was subducted under the Australian plate. The Alpine Fault that traverses the South Island is currently a transform fault while the convergent plate boundary from the North Island northwards is a subduction zone called the Kermadec-Tonga Subduction Zone. The volcanism associated with this subduction zone is the origin of the Kermadec and Tongan island archipelagos. Out of about 117,000 or 118,000 square miles (300,000 or 310,000 km2) of land, over 103,000 square miles (270,000 km2) are within New Zealand; the Hawaiian archipelago comprises about half the remainder. The Zealandia continent has approximately 1,400,000 square miles (3,600,000 km2) of continental shelf. The oldest rocks in the region are found in New Zealand and are believed to be about 510 million years old. The oldest Polynesian rocks outside of Zealandia are to be found in the Hawaiian Emperor Seamount Chain, and are 80 million years old. Geographic area Polynesia is generally defined as the islands within the Polynesian Triangle, although there are some islands that are inhabited by Polynesian people situated outside the Polynesian Triangle. Geographically, the Polynesian Triangle is drawn by connecting the points of Hawaii, New Zealand and Easter Island. The other main island groups located within the Polynesian Triangle are Samoa, Tonga, the Cook Islands, Tuvalu, Tokelau, Niue, Wallis and Futuna and French Polynesia. There are also small Polynesian settlements in Papua New Guinea, the Solomon Islands, the Caroline Islands, and in Vanuatu. An island group with strong Polynesian cultural traits outside of this great triangle is Rotuma, situated north of Fiji. The people of Rotuma have many common Polynesian traits but speak a non-Polynesian language. Some of the Lau Islands to the southeast of Fiji have strong historic and cultural links with Tonga. However, in essence, Polynesia is a cultural term referring to one of the three parts of Oceania (the others being Micronesia and Melanesia). DNA studies suggest that the indigenous Pacific Islands population migrated from Taiwan thousands of years ago and dispersed throughout the region into three distinct cultural groups. Island groups Mokoliʻi Isle near Oahu, Hawaii Cook's Bay on Moorea, French Polynesia The following are the islands and island groups, either nations or overseas territories of former colonial powers, that are of native Polynesian culture or where archaeological evidence indicates Polynesian settlement in the past.[3] Some islands of Polynesian origin are outside the general triangle that geographically defines the region.
We caught the ferry over to Savaii to spend a few days. There are fales dotted all along the coastline so we thought that the best way to get in and experience the local lifestyle was to actually stay in a traditional fale. We stayed at Tanu Beach Fales and they provided a mattress and mosquito net and we slept right by the waters edge and went to sleep with the sound of the water lapping up on the sand. There is a lot to explore on this huge island and we visit the Saleaula Lava Field, swim with turtles at Satoalepai, throw coconuts in to the blow holes, cross the swinging bridge at Falealupo Canopy Walkway and hang out with some of the locals. You can find beautiful romantic resorts in Savaii and we stayed at Le Lagoto Resort with a elegant mix of traditional and modern decor. As soon as you walk in to this resort you know you are in a tropical paradise. A wonderful experience not to missed is their Sunday church service. Being a highly Christian country, there are churches of every denomination and Sunday is their day of church, family and rest. See the locals in their beautiful Sunday best and singing from the heart with their angelic voices. And at the end of the day we head to Falealupo Beach which is at the western most point of Samoa to see the first sunset in the world. Take a picnic and enjoy your stunning surrounds.

Subscribe to SHABL - http://bit.ly/1uR4ogG I sit down with my good friend and travel expert Sam from Nomadic Samuel and we rip through a list of "Travel tips that don't suck" which I wrote a few years ago on my blog. We go over each point and discuss it, adding a bit to it. These tips aren't your average generic ones about how to roll a towel or where to to find a cheap flight; it's information that will serve you on all of your travels regardless of where you're going or for how long. Some of the tips include but are not limited to topics such as money changing, reasons to never carry a guidebook, what to do when lost at night, dealing with exchange rates, strangers asking where you live, paying cash or things, pick pockets, staying safe while traveling, multiple money sources, being proactive, dealing with stray dogs, logging into personal accounts from internet cafes aka keeping passwords safe, laptop locks, be the bigger person, pick company wisely, foreign etiquette, motor vehicles aka renting scooters and the like... All these tips are taken from the post below: http://stophavingaboringlife.com/30-travel-tips-that-dont-suck/ Believe it or not, I wrote that post in December of 2009 when I first started out in SE Asia and they are just as relevant when I discuss them with Sam ~5 years later. The Guardian 2013-01-22The Lau Islands (also called the Lau Group, the Eastern Group, the Eastern Archipelago) of Fiji are situated in the southern Pacific Ocean, just east of the Koro Sea. Of this chain of about one hundred islands and islets, about thirty are inhabited. The Lau Group covers a land area of 188 square miles (487 square km), and had a population of 10,683 at the most recent census in 2007. While most of the northern Lau Group are high islands of volcanic origin, those of the south are mostly carbonate low islands.
Administratively the islands belong to Lau Province.
The British explorer James Cook reached Vatoa in 1774. By the time of the discovery of the Ono Group in 1820, the Lau archipelago was the most mapped area of Fiji.
Political unity came late to the Lau Islands. Historically, they comprised three territories: the Northern Lau Islands, the Southern Lau Islands, and the Moala Islands. Around 1855, the renegade Tongan prince Enele Ma'afu conquered the region and established a unified administration. Calling himself the Tui Lau, or King of Lau, he promulgated a constitution and encouraged the establishment of Christian missions. The first missionaries had arrived at Lakeba in 1830, but had been expelled. The Tui Nayau, who had been the nominal overlord of the Lau Islands, became subject to Ma'afu.
We sailed out of Dunmore Michelmas gone by
Cowhides and wool and live cargo
Twenty young Wild Geese ready fledged to fly
Sailing for the lowlands low
The lowlands low, the lowlands low
Sailing for the lowlands low
Sean Rouse the skipper from the church of Crook
Piery keeps log for his father
Crew all from Bannow, Fethard and the Hook
Sailing for the lowlands low
The lowlands low, the lowlands low
Sailing for the lowlands low
Ready with priming we'd our galliot gun
Muskets and pikes in good order
We should be riddled captives would be none
Death or else the lowlands low
The lowlands low, the lowlands low
Death or else the lowlands low
A pirate approached us many leagues from shore
We fought and we sunk him in good order
He'll go a-roving plundering no more
Sailing for the lowlands low
The lowlands low, the lowlands low
Sailing for the lowlands low
We smuggled out the Wild Geese weapons safe ashore
Then we unloaded our cargo
A fair wind is blowing we're headed for Dunmore
Sailing from the lowlands low
The lowlands low, the lowlands low
Sailing from the lowlands low
The lowlands low, the lowlands low
(GUITAR INTRO)
I heard a song that was taught to a baby
and it made the mountain sing
I knew a gift that was given to my lady
it was hidden in a dream
and there's a light in the lowlands
and a river that runs so clean
I'm a poor man feelin' lazy
and the lowlands are callin' my name
(hymnal-like chant)
I knew a man who said he was a stranger
'cause his heart he could not trust
I knew a man who could not face the dangers
even though he knew he must
and it's hard in the lowlands
and the grasses will turn to rust
but the sun is a fountain
(GUITAR INTRO)
I heard a song that was taught to a baby
and it made the mountain sing
I knew a gift that was given to my lady
it was hidden in a dream
and there's a light in the lowlands
and a river that runs so clean
I'm a poor man feelin' lazy
and the lowlands are callin' my name
(hymnal-like chant)
I knew a man who said he was a stranger
'cause his heart he could not trust
I knew a man who could not face the dangers
even though he knew he must
and it's hard in the lowlands
and the grasses will turn to rust
but the sun is a fountain
flowing through the lowland's dust
I saddled me a wounded priest
Rode him wet through this august heat
I took me a german bride
All empty and bloody inside
In the dark I heard a thief
He stole my money and my grief
In the morning I wanted to die
The doctor cut me the lawyer lied
Stop yer waiting and just go
Don't be saying what you don't know
For the lowlands I am bound
Saw a girl on the street from my home
Like a fire on the hillside she shown
And I knew right then that my best days were gone
And I'd been, been in the lowlands too long
Oh I've been in the lowlands too long
Oh, I know, I know that I should go
And I've been in the lowlands too long
This is not how it was at the start
There's a doubt and a blame in my heart
And it's no one else, no fault but my own
And I've been in the lowlands too long
Oh I've been in the lowlands too long
Oh, I know, I know that I should go
And I've been in the lowlands too long
What is this weight in my mind
And what is this new sense of time
It's the open fields and the friends that are gone
And I've been in the lowlands too long
I can sing out at all sing a song
I can do nothing all the day long
But I can't do right and I know I'm wrong
And I've been in the lowlands too long
Oh I've been in the lowlands too long
Oh, I know, I know that I should go
The low pressure band
had broken up but not let go
As holy stormy monday
broke out on the streets below
If not to hear your voice
is still the thing I can't replace
Somehow I can always see your face
In the lowlands
I rise up in the evening
and rebuild a heart of stone
All around the border
where your memories have grown
'Til someone told me don't you know
there is no hiding place
Not until you meet it face to face
In the lowlands
On the battlefield
I can see a big bright continent
where fear does not exist
Where you could walk away from me
and I would not resist
And I won't be coming back again
to see where we went wrong
Never more to hear your siren song
In the lowlands
In the rain
On the street
In all the places
Where we used to meet
In the lowlands
In the lowlands
