It adds a sail to your existing boat. This sail reacts in a realistic way to the wind. The sail pulls against the sheet setting and inflates when it can, but flaps noisily when the wind is not at a good angle. A full perm copy of a sail texture is included so you can export, modify and import it with your own design. The sail has a .sailparams notecard inside that allows you to set the sound made when sailing or flapping and the texture maps of the sail at different damage levels. (Sail textures designed by Modee Parlez). Just link this sail to a boat with my Sailing Ship script in it and the sail will come alive. Or you can modify your boat script to send the messages the sail needs to work. A Test Mast object with a FULL PERM sample script shows how to do this. The sail is a single prim mesh that is MOD so you will be able to modify it and link it into the boat of your dreams. The sail is COPY so you will be able to put several on one boat, make several different boats, and launch several copies of each. A TRANS version is available for building into boats that you can sell. (The script inside is NOMOD, I have to keep some of my secrets secret!) Lateen Sails: The Lateen sail is made from a single mesh prim that includes the yardarm at the top. When reefed or furled you see the sail folded up under the yardarm. This is a triangular sail that is raised at an angle and controlled by a sheet (a nautical term for a rope tied to the bottom of the triangle). This makes it a fore-and-aft sail that can sail close into the wind. It hangs in front and behind the mast and rotates within +/-90 degrees. It is attached to the mast with the yardarm at the top. This simulated Lateen sail can switch automatically to the other side of the mast, so it never has a “bad tack”. The sheet setting controls how far this sail can swing forward under wind pressure. (You can't see the sheet, it is just a number in the sailing simulation). By trimming the sheet (carefully controlling the maximum sail angle) you can generate forward thrust from a Lateen sail even when traveling almost directly into the wind. Not very much thrust, but enough to make headway while tacking into the wind. When pointed too far into the wind with a loose sheet, a Lateen sail will hang down-wind and flap while generating no thrust. When a boat gibes across the wind, a Lateen sail will snap around from one side to the other. Be careful that the yardarm does not hit you in the head on the way across! This mesh sail is designed to rotate around the point where the yardarm crosses the mast. If your mast is a prim like a cylinder, you can copy the position of the mast into the position of the sail and it will lock into just about the right place. Move it up and down until the yardarm is at approximately the right height. Use the Stretch tool to change the size of the sail to fit. You should use “Stretch both sides” mode when changing the X or Y size of the sail.
