Exploring Guam's Chamorro History and Culture The tropical island of Guam, located in the Western Pacific Ocean, is "where America's day begins" because of its proximity to the International Date Line, making it the first place in the U.S. to start the day. On my trip to Guam, I appreciated the early start because it gave me plenty of time to discover the island's rich history and culture. Guam's native inhabitants are the Chamorro people, and the influence of their traditions and customs can be found in every aspect of the island's history, cuisine and legends. Chamorro Life, Then and Now I started my cultural exploration at Gef Pa'go Chamorro Cultural Village, a living museum of traditional thatched huts overlooking Inarajan Bay. Here, visitors can experience life as Guam's native Chamorros lived in the early 1900s. My favorite part was looking on as our Chamorro hosts demonstrated traditional crafts and practices of the time period. I even got to take home my own coconut candy and hand-woven basket. Another great way to observe Chamorro life today is to participate in a Village Fiesta. Families in Guam's 19 villages prepare local cuisine and open their homes to friends, family and visitors. This tradition, which honors the patron saint in each community, dates back to the late 1600s, but the celebrations are just as festive and welcoming today. You can't get much more local than this! Another way to enjoy Guam's cuisine and culture is at a Chamorro Cultural Dinner Show, held at many of the island's hotels and resorts. The shows blend traditional dance, storytelling and costumes with the delicious flavors of an island barbeque. Exploring Guam's History I wanted to learn more about Guam's role during World War II, so I visited the T. Stell Newman Visitors Center, located in The War in the Pacific National Historic Park, just outside the Naval Base Guam. This center tells the story of Guam during World War II, including the time under Japanese rule. The center has brand new, interactive exhibits that effectively tell Guam's story. You can also watch the powerful 10-minute movie, The Battle for Guam. Another favorite for history lovers is Latte Stone Park, home to eight ancient latte stones, which are thought to have served as support structures for Chamorro houses. They are comprised of two pieces: a supporting column and a capstone. Latte stones can be found only in Guam and the Mariana Islands. It was amazing to witness these literal pieces of history! Living Legends at Two Lovers Point One of my favorite sites was Two Lovers Point, as it blends the island's culture and stunning beauty with a tragic tale of two star-crossed lovers. According to Chamorro legend, two lovers who had been forbidden by their families to marry tied their hair together before leaping to their deaths so they could be together in eternity. With observation points over the sweeping 378-foot-high cliff-side landscape and the Philippine Sea, the site offers breathtaking views, making it a popular site for honeymooners and couples. But, even the most practical person would fall in love with these views, just as I did with the welcoming people, fascinating culture and compelling stories of Guam.
Guam, Chamorro chants of Guma' Palu Li'e'. An organization dedicated to the reconstruction, teaching, and preservation of Chamorro culture through indigenous performance art. People attempting to preserve a vanishing culture in a changing world.
This was the finale performance at the: 11th Annual Chamorro Dance Competition and Festival Dinanna Minagof You'll see dancers in their costumes unique to their dance houses (Guma') performing under the direction of Master of Chamorro Dance, Frank Rabon. Also featuring Guma' from the CNMI (Sa'ipan and Tini'an), San Diego California, and Japan. This also was the debut announcement of Inetnon i Manfafa'naguan Bailan Chamorro, The Tribal Council. The tribal council "Inetnon I Manfafanaguen Bailan Chamorro" was iniated in 2010 by the first six traditional certified "Fafa'nague" to address the erosion of the Chamorro language and culture. The council felt the need to establish guidelines and consistency in the re-establishment of the Chamorro dance that began with Guma' Taotao Tano' in 1983. It was necessary to establish consistency in the presentation of the Chamorro dance most especially since Guam was called upon to send cultural representation at prestigious festivals throughout the world and prestigious local events such as: Festival of Pacific Arts, cultural festivals in Europe, Asia, Americas and Oceana, Guam Micronesian Island Fair, 1999 South Pacific Games ceremonies, 2000 Olympic Torch Lighting ceremony and 50th Anniversary of the signing of the Organic of Guam. The recognized "Fafa'nague" members of the tribal council have become guardians of the Chamorro culture most especially the aspect of dance, song, chant and weaving, are frequently called upon by the community of Guam to showcase the Chamorro culture and instil the proper image of the people of the Marianas to our visitors, and educate the 4,000 year existence of the Chamorro people. The recognition of the Tribal Council, certified "Fafa'nague" becomes more important as Guam prepares to host the 12th Festival of Pacific Arts in 2016, for the benefit of our visiting Pacific brothers and sisters where traditional practices and tribal laws are still prevalent to this day. The tribal council provides valuable guidance to our youth of today, and ensures that traditional practices are not completely lost. Featuring Fafa'nague: Master Eileen Meno - Guma' Irensian Taotao Tano' Maga'haga Zina San Nicolas Ruiz - Guma' Taotao Tano' Bobbie Tainatongo - Guma' Aniten i Taotao Tano' Dana Kim - Guma' Taotao Lagu Brian Terlaje - Guma' Rasan Acho' Latte Arthur Pangelinan - Guma' Taotao Tano' Ray Lujan - Guma' Nina'en Acho' Latte Jonathan Perez - Guma' Ininan i Saina-Ta Maxine Bigler - Guma' Aniten i Taotao Tano' RosaLynn Aquiningoc - Guma' Irensian Taotao Tano' Rosemary Mantanona - Guma' Imahan Taotao Tano' (San Diego) Eric Reyes - Guma' Taotao Taga (Tini'an, CNMI) Jonas Barcinas - Sa'ipan, CNMI Other Group Leaders: LJ Castro - Guma' Poksain Inatuas (Sa'ipan, CNMI) Patrick Camacho - Guma' Fuetsan Chamoru-ta Tulu na Napu (Guam) Asami San Nicolas - Guma' Taotao Kinahulo' Atdau na Tano' (Japan) Kyoko Nakayama - Guma' Famagu'on Tano yan i Tasi (Japan) Masako Nakagawa - Guma' Imahen Taotao i Latte (Japan)
The Sakman was once the fastest sailing vessel in the world. It was once so numerous in the Marianas that 17th Century Europeans wrote in their journals of the hundreds of proas that could be seen plying the waters up and down the Marianas. The Europeans had never seen anything like it in Europe nor in all of Oceania. There were no sailing vessels that could come near to matching its speed. Sometimes exceeding 40 feet in length, they were capable of speeds in excess of 20 knots! The Sakman's design is unlike any other proa in all of Oceania. The canoe hull is asymetrical - flat on one side and curved like most canoes on the other. Its outrigger, mounted off the curved side, faced the wind as it sailed, and the flat side acted as a keel. The bow and the stern were identical. When sailed, the Sakman's outrigger always faced the wind - even when turning. Rather than cross the wind and take the wind on the other side of the sail like other sail boats, the Sakman was simply steered away from the wind so that the stern became more upwind, the sailors all turned around to face the other way, and the Sakman took off in the opposite direction! With its massive sail and light, narrow hull, the Sakman was used for fast, long-distance travel up and down the Marianas chain and to the Western Caroline islands to the south. Hafa Adai! Come aboard. Along with you on this historic journey are people from Guahan (Guam) and Saipan, Luta (Rota), Tinian, and Pagan in the Northern Marianas, as well as people who have left these islands and now live scattered across the globe. People from Hawaii to the US Mainland, to Europe and the Middle East, are helping and working together to bring back the Chamorro Flying Proa! This legendary open ocean sailing canoe, called "Sakman" in Chamorro, is more than just a very, very fast canoe. It is highly symbolic. It was once the fastest sailing vessel in the world - the ingenous invention of a people who lived in isolation for perhaps 3000 years. The Sakman was taken from the Chamorro people by force by Spanish colonizers and its loss was devastating. But Chamorros are a resilent people. We survived the Spanish era. We survived the German Era. We survived Japanese colonialism. We survived World War II occupation. And now, over two and a half centuries after the last Sakman was seen, it is time we reclaimed this cultural treasure! Centuries ago, Chamorro navigators guided their Sakman across vast distances to land safely home. Today we are the navigators. From the distant past a Sakman is making its way across a sea of time to our shores and it is up to us to guide it home. Join us - become a navigator! Two ways to help 1. Guam History Professor Anne Perez Hattori describes the Chamoru's connection to their land, and the effects of US military land-takings on Guam after World War II.
I deeply appreciate all those who contributed their time and energy in efforts that led to the establishment of a legal holiday dedicated to the memory of the Chamorro people and the celebration of our rich culture and traditions. Special thanks to Mrs. Flora Baza Quan for the use of her song 'Hagu'. This beautiful song was written by her sister Janice Baza Davidson. - Senator Tommy Morrison www.senatormorrison.com
The Guam Visitors Bureau, in extending the unique culture of the Chamorro people, sponsored the Guam Chamorro Dance Academy in Tokyo, Japan. The forty students, who have never been to a Chamorro dance class, were remarkable in their attentive and eager nature to learn about the culture of the Chamorro people. Chamorro dance master Frank Rabon was pleased with the response to the lessons. Two classes were held with over 40 students with more turned away due to lack of studio space.
Chamorro cake is more like a pound cake compared to brojas, the Chamorro sponge cake. If you use all-purpose flour, my recipe yields a dense cake. If you prefer cake flour, the cake is luscious and light. I actually prefer the dense cake. Some people include raisins in their Chamorro cake. Depending on the type of cake or baked good, raisins have a tendency to sink to the bottom; this happens with my Chamorro cake recipe. The National Organization of Chamorro Veterans in America (NOCVA) presents a historic event on behalf of the Chamorro People. On 24 March 2012, under a steady rain, a group of Chamorro Veterans, their families and friends, gathered in Washington, DC to honor the men from Guam and the Northern Mariana Islands who died in the Vietnam War. Because of the great distance to Washington, DC, family and friends in the islands cannot easily travel to see the names of their loved ones etched on the wall. In spite of their small numbers, the soldiers from Guam and the Northern Mariana Islands suffered one of the highest casualty rates compared to other states and territories. With Pride, Honor and a deep sense of Duty, Chamorro Veterans from North Carolina with the National Organization of Chamorro Veterans in America, initiated, planned and conducted the first Chamorro Veterans Commemoration Ceremony at the Vietnam Veterans Memorial in Washington, DC in memory of their fallen Chamorro brothers. She will be sharing her experience with the typhoon "Pamela" of 1976. Pamela 1976 -The total damage totaled $500 million. Ten people were lost in the neighboring island, Chuuk due to landslide. The typhoon forced winds were greater than 150 mph when it landed on Guam. A sum of 3,300 houses were destroyed. Pamela's slow motion produced 33.7 in of rainfall. Despite the high damage, there was only one death on island due to well-executed warnings. Note: -I have been given permission, via signature, from this teacher to upload this on YouTube.

The Oklahoman 2014-05-29The Chamorro people, or Chamoru people, are the indigenous peoples of the Mariana Islands, which include the United States territory of Guam and the United States Commonwealth of the Northern Mariana Islands in Micronesia. Today, significant Chamoru populations also exist in several U.S. states including Hawaii, California, Washington, Texas and Nevada. According to the 2000 Census, approximately 65,000 people of Chamoru ancestry live on Guam and another 19,000 live in the Northern Marianas. Another 93,000 live outside the Marianas in Hawaii and the West/Pacific coast of the United States. The Chamoru are primarily of Austronesian stock.
Most Chamorros are Roman Catholic and few in the Marianas still maintain some customs and beliefs from the time before the first European conquests; some residents of the Marianas will still ask permission from ancestral spirits before entering parts of jungles. Traditional healers called suruhanas are still greatly respected for their knowledge of herbal treatments and spirits. Before Spanish colonization, Chamoru life centered on one's clan. Chamorro culture is strongly influenced by Spanish, Filipino, Japanese, and American customs; in addition, Chamorro food is also influenced by the various groups mentioned previously. Today, large extended families remain central to life in the Marianas.
