US Navy film MN-10849 Public domain film from the US National Archives, slightly cropped to remove uneven edges, with the aspect ratio corrected, and mild video noise reduction applied. The soundtrack was also processed with volume normalization, noise reduction, clipping reduction, and/or equalization (the resulting sound, though not perfect, is far less noisy than the original). http://creativecommons.org/licenses/by-sa/3.0/ http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Trust_Territory_of_the_Pacific_Islands The Trust Territory of the Pacific Islands (TTPI) was a United Nations trust territory in Micronesia (western Pacific) administered by the United States from 1947 to 1986. History The territory comprised the former South Pacific Mandate, a League of Nations Mandate administered by Japan and taken by the U.S. in 1944. The TTPI entered UN trusteeship on July 18, 1947 and was designated a "strategic area" in its 1947 trusteeship agreement. As such, its formal status as a UN trust territory could be terminated only by the Security Council, and not by the General Assembly as with other trust territories.[citation needed] The United States Navy controlled the TTPI from a headquarters in Guam until 1951, when the United States Department of the Interior took over control, administering the territory from a base in Saipan. A Congress of Micronesia first levied an income tax in 1971. It affected mainly foreigners working at military bases in the region. On October 21, 1986, the U.S. ended its administration of the Marshall Islands District. The termination of U.S. administration of the Chuuk, Yap, Kosrae, Pohnpei, and the Mariana Islands districts of the TTPI soon followed on November 3, 1986. The Security Council formally ended the trusteeship for the Chuuk, Yap, Kosrae, Pohnpei, Mariana Islands, and Marshall Islands districts on December 22, 1990. On May 25, 1994, the Council ended the trusteeship for the Palau District, after which the U.S. and Palau agreed to establish the latter's independence on October 1. Current status The area is now divided into four territories: Sovereign states in free association with the United States The following sovereign states have become freely associated with the United States under the Compact of Free Association (COFA). - Republic of the Marshall Islands - Established 1979, COFA effective October 21, 1986 - Federated States of Micronesia - Established 1979, COFA effective November 3, 1986 - Republic of Palau - Established 1981, COFA effect October 1, 1994 Unincorporated organized territory of the United States - Commonwealth of the Northern Mariana Islands - New constitution partially effective January 1, 1978, and fully effective November 4, 1986... http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Marshall_Islands The Marshall Islands, officially the Republic of the Marshall Islands (Marshallese: Aolepān Aorōkin M̧ajeļ), is an island country located near the equator in the Pacific Ocean, slightly west of the International Date Line. Geographically, the country is part of the larger island group of Micronesia, with the population of 68,480 people spread out over 24 low-lying coral atolls, comprising 1,156 individual islands and islets. The islands share maritime boundaries with the Federated States of Micronesia to the west, Wake Island to the north, Kiribati to the south-east, and Nauru to the south. Pacific Documentation - Lost World of The Pacific - Polynesian Islands Documentary Polynesia is characterized by a small amount of land spread over a very large portion of the mid and southern Pacific Ocean. Most Polynesian islands and archipelagos, including the Hawaiian Islands and Samoa, are composed of volcanic islands built by hotspots. New Zealand, Norfolk Island, and Ouvéa, the Polynesian outlier near New Caledonia, are the unsubmerged portions of the largely sunken continent of Zealandia. Zealandia is believed to have mostly sunk by 23 m.y.a. and resurfaced geologically recently due to a change in the movements of the Pacific Plate in relation to the Indo-Australian plate, which served to uplift the New Zealand portion. At first, the Pacific plate was subducted under the Australian plate. The Alpine Fault that traverses the South Island is currently a transform fault while the convergent plate boundary from the North Island northwards is a subduction zone called the Kermadec-Tonga Subduction Zone. The volcanism associated with this subduction zone is the origin of the Kermadec and Tongan island archipelagos. Out of about 117,000 or 118,000 square miles (300,000 or 310,000 km2) of land, over 103,000 square miles (270,000 km2) are within New Zealand; the Hawaiian archipelago comprises about half the remainder. The Zealandia continent has approximately 1,400,000 square miles (3,600,000 km2) of continental shelf. The oldest rocks in the region are found in New Zealand and are believed to be about 510 million years old. The oldest Polynesian rocks outside of Zealandia are to be found in the Hawaiian Emperor Seamount Chain, and are 80 million years old. Geographic area Polynesia is generally defined as the islands within the Polynesian Triangle, although there are some islands that are inhabited by Polynesian people situated outside the Polynesian Triangle. Geographically, the Polynesian Triangle is drawn by connecting the points of Hawaii, New Zealand and Easter Island. The other main island groups located within the Polynesian Triangle are Samoa, Tonga, the Cook Islands, Tuvalu, Tokelau, Niue, Wallis and Futuna and French Polynesia. There are also small Polynesian settlements in Papua New Guinea, the Solomon Islands, the Caroline Islands, and in Vanuatu. An island group with strong Polynesian cultural traits outside of this great triangle is Rotuma, situated north of Fiji. The people of Rotuma have many common Polynesian traits but speak a non-Polynesian language. Some of the Lau Islands to the southeast of Fiji have strong historic and cultural links with Tonga. However, in essence, Polynesia is a cultural term referring to one of the three parts of Oceania (the others being Micronesia and Melanesia). DNA studies suggest that the indigenous Pacific Islands population migrated from Taiwan thousands of years ago and dispersed throughout the region into three distinct cultural groups. Island groups Mokoliʻi Isle near Oahu, Hawaii Cook's Bay on Moorea, French Polynesia The following are the islands and island groups, either nations or overseas territories of former colonial powers, that are of native Polynesian culture or where archaeological evidence indicates Polynesian settlement in the past.[3] Some islands of Polynesian origin are outside the general triangle that geographically defines the region.

The Sakman was once the fastest sailing vessel in the world. It was once so numerous in the Marianas that 17th Century Europeans wrote in their journals of the hundreds of proas that could be seen plying the waters up and down the Marianas. The Europeans had never seen anything like it in Europe nor in all of Oceania. There were no sailing vessels that could come near to matching its speed. Sometimes exceeding 40 feet in length, they were capable of speeds in excess of 20 knots! The Sakman's design is unlike any other proa in all of Oceania. The canoe hull is asymetrical - flat on one side and curved like most canoes on the other. Its outrigger, mounted off the curved side, faced the wind as it sailed, and the flat side acted as a keel. The bow and the stern were identical. When sailed, the Sakman's outrigger always faced the wind - even when turning. Rather than cross the wind and take the wind on the other side of the sail like other sail boats, the Sakman was simply steered away from the wind so that the stern became more upwind, the sailors all turned around to face the other way, and the Sakman took off in the opposite direction! With its massive sail and light, narrow hull, the Sakman was used for fast, long-distance travel up and down the Marianas chain and to the Western Caroline islands to the south. Hafa Adai! Come aboard. Along with you on this historic journey are people from Guahan (Guam) and Saipan, Luta (Rota), Tinian, and Pagan in the Northern Marianas, as well as people who have left these islands and now live scattered across the globe. People from Hawaii to the US Mainland, to Europe and the Middle East, are helping and working together to bring back the Chamorro Flying Proa! This legendary open ocean sailing canoe, called "Sakman" in Chamorro, is more than just a very, very fast canoe. It is highly symbolic. It was once the fastest sailing vessel in the world - the ingenous invention of a people who lived in isolation for perhaps 3000 years. The Sakman was taken from the Chamorro people by force by Spanish colonizers and its loss was devastating. But Chamorros are a resilent people. We survived the Spanish era. We survived the German Era. We survived Japanese colonialism. We survived World War II occupation. And now, over two and a half centuries after the last Sakman was seen, it is time we reclaimed this cultural treasure! Centuries ago, Chamorro navigators guided their Sakman across vast distances to land safely home. Today we are the navigators. From the distant past a Sakman is making its way across a sea of time to our shores and it is up to us to guide it home. Join us - become a navigator! Two ways to help 1. The Caroline Islands (Islas Carolinas in Spanish) are a widely scattered archipelago of tiny islands in the western Pacific Ocean, to the north of New Guinea. Politically they are divided between the Federated States of Micronesia in the eastern part of the group, and Palau at the extreme western end. Historically, this area was also called Nuevas Filipinas or New Philippines as they were part of the Spanish East Indies and governed from Manila in the Philippines.
The group consists of about 500 small coral islands, east of the Philippines, in the Pacific Ocean; the distance from Manila to Yap, one of the larger islands of the group, is 1,200 miles (1,900 km).
Most of the islands comprise low, flat coral atolls, but some rise high above sea level.
The native inhabitants speak a variety of Micronesian languages including Yapese, Pohnpeian, Chuukese, Carolinian and Kosraean, as well as the Western Malayo-Polynesian language Palauan. Other significant populations include Filipinos and Japanese.
