Iran fired missiles and attacked a scale replica of a U.S. warship in the Strait of Hormuz on Wednesday as part of massive military war games, state media outlets reported. The country's Islamic Revolutionary Guard test-fired what it said were new 223 mph underwater missiles during the drills, code named Great Prophet 9, according to Press TV. Pictures showed a number of gunboats swarming the model warship and blasting it with missiles. The model "of an American aircraft carrier" was built to scale and targeted with cruise missiles and ballistic missiles, according to Fars News. The drills also featured "speedboats equipped with naval radars, electronic communications systems, cruise missiles with a range of 25 kilometers, anti-ship medium-range missiles, medium- and large-caliber torpedoes, sea mines, heavy machine guns, rocket-launchers and shoulder-fired surface-to-air missiles," Press TV said. Western navies also stage military exercises in the Gulf, saying they wish to guarantee freedom of navigation. Some 30 percent of all seaborne-traded oil flows through Hormuz, according to the U.S. Energy Information Administration, and U.S. officials have expressed concern in the past that Iran could try to disrupt the oil flow or even attack American warships patrolling the waters of the Gulf. The Guard's Navy Commander, Rear Admiral Ali Fadavi, was recently quoted by state media claiming: "We can destroy a U.S. warship in 50 seconds." A ceremony marking Wednesday's exercises was attended by commanders of the Guards and by by parliament speaker Ali Larijani. "We have noticeably expanded the defense budget of the armed forces to ensure the stable security of the region," Larijani told a news conference before the exercises, according to Fars News Iranian cruise missiles blow up life-size replica of American aircraft carrier

Iran’s gift to the world on December 25 was a reminder that it can put the world in a chokehold. Connect: http://www.theTrumpet.com http://twitter.com/theTrumpet_com http://www.facebook.com/PhiladelphiaTrumpet http://plus.google.com/+Thetrumpet/posts On Thursday, the Iranian military began a massive drill near the 34-mile wide Strait of Hormuz. The strategic waterway sees 30 percent of the world’s exported oil pass through it. The strait is also the entrance into the Persian Gulf, which separates the Arabian Peninsula and Iran. Iran’s military is conducting various drills over 850,000 square miles in the Indian Ocean, the sea of Oman, and the eastern part of the strait. The weeklong exercise involves 13,000 troops, including the army, navy and air force Iranian military spokesman Gen. Kioomars Heidari said: Soundbite with voiceover translation: “We transferred parts of our military equipment and forces from the southwest of the country to the southeast so that we can assess our agility in rapid transportation.” This is the first time Iran has organized a drill so far from its coastline. The exercises will involve ballistic missiles and drone testing. It is probably not coincidence that these large-scale exercises are happening as oil prices fall and Iran’s budget is squeezed. Iran is reminding the world of its ability to shut down the strait, even if only for a short time. The Trumpet believes tensions over Iran’s nuclear program and pushy foreign policy will explode into a deadly conflict with the West. TEHRAN // Iran’s Revolutionary Guard launched large-scale naval and air defence drills near a strategic Arabian Gulf waterway on Wednesday in which dozens of speedboats swarmed a replica of a US aircraft carrier. State TV showed footage of missiles fired from the coast and the fast boats striking the mock US aircraft carrier. The drills, which also included shooting down a drone and planting undersea mines, were the first to involve a replica of a US carrier. The drill, named Great Prophet 9, was held near the Strait of Hormuz, through which one fifth of the world’s oil passes. Iran’s regular army carried out naval drills near the strait in December. “American aircraft carriers are very big ammunition depots housing a lot of missiles, rockets, torpedoes and everything else,” the Guard’s navy chief, Admiral Ali Fadavi, said on state TV. He said a direct hit by a missile could set off a large secondary explosion. Last month, Adm Fadavi said his force is capable of sinking American aircraft carriers in the event of war. The Guard’s chief commander, General Mohammad Ali Jafari, said the drills send a “message of [Iran’s] might” to “extraterritorial powers” – a reference to the United States. Commander Kevin Stephens, the spokesman for the US Navy’s 5th Fleet in Bahrain, said the Iranian naval exercises began a few days ago and have had no effect on maritime traffic. Mr Stephens said the Americans were monitoring the drills, but downplayed the simulated attack on the carrier, saying the US military was “not concerned about this exercise”. “We’re quite confident of our naval forces’ ability to defend themselves,” he said. “It seems they’ve attempted to destroy the equivalent of a Hollywood movie set.” Iran is currently negotiating an agreement over its disputed nuclear programme with the US and five other world powers. The two sides hope to reach a framework agreement next month and a final deal in June. Western nations have long suspected Iran is covertly seeking a nuclear weapons capability, charges denied by Tehran.

Travel video about destination Sultanate in Oman. The Sultanate Of Oman is a fabulous land full of surprises, a splendid example of original Arabia that extends from the Straits Of Hormuz to the southern Dhofar. Up until the 1970’s the third largest country in the Arabian Peninsula was only accessible by various caravan routes but today it boasts an abundance of mysterious desert towns and splendid palaces. The white city of Sohar is the historic harbour of the Islamic world and the ‘Gateway To China’. It is still guarded by the white Sohar Fort, a mighty four-storey structure that dates back to the 14th century. The Hajar Mountains extend for almost six hundred kilometres from the Musandam Peninsula in the north to its eastern sections. They are also known as the Oman Mountains and divide the coast from the inland. Oman covers around three hundred thousand square kilometres and is one of the most sparsely settled countries in the world with only one and a half million inhabitants. Nizwa, the religious center of the Omans, has a moving past that manifests itself in the city’s defensive fortress. Until the 12th century it was the capital of the Desert State of Oman. Even today this oasis city and trading metropolis has lost none of its former importance. Al-Hamra is the name of a three hundred year old oasis village that dates back to the reign of Imam Saif Bin Sultan. At the end of the 17th century members of the Abriyin Tribe settled here the descendants of whom still live in the Jebal-Akhdar Mountains. Al-Hamra means ‘The Red One’, an Arabic name that is also to be found in the word ‘Alhambra’, in Spain’s Granada. The Sultanate Of Oman is a treasure trove of rarities. Its twelve thousand year old history is visible throughout the entire country and the beauty of the mysterious Arabian Peninsula is a truly captivating experience.

Most important, you'll meet the people of this nation whose government so exasperates our own. Iran (Listeni/ɪˈrɑːn/[10] or /aɪˈræn/;[11] Persian: ایران [ʔiːˈɾɑn] ( listen)), formerly known as Persia (/ˈpɜrʒə/ or /ˈpɜrʃə/),[11][12] officially the Islamic Republic of Iran, is a country in Western Asia.[13][14][15] It is bordered to the northwest by Armenia, the de facto independent Nagorno-Karabakh Republic, and Azerbaijan; with Kazakhstan and Russia across the Caspian Sea; to the northeast by Turkmenistan; to the east by Afghanistan and Pakistan; to the south by the Persian Gulf and the Gulf of Oman; and to the west by Turkey and Iraq. Comprising a land area of 1,648,195 km2 (636,372 sq mi), it is the second-largest nation in the Middle East and the 18th-largest in the world; with 78.4 million inhabitants, Iran is the world's 17th most populous nation.[13][16] It is the only country that has both a Caspian Sea and Indian Ocean coastline. Iran has been of geostrategic importance because of its central location in Eurasia and Western Asia and the Strait of Hormuz. Iran is home to one of the world's oldest civilizations,[17][18] beginning with the formation of the Proto-Elamite and Elamite kingdom in 3200–2800 BC. The Iranian Medes unified the country into the first of many empires in 625 BC, after which it became the dominant cultural and political power in the region.[3] Iran reached the pinnacle of its power during the Achaemenid Empire (First Persian Empire) founded by Cyrus the Great in 550 BC, which at its greatest extent comprised major portions of the ancient world, stretching from parts of the Balkans (Bulgaria-Pannonia) and Thrace-Macedonia in the west, to the Indus Valley in the east, making it the largest empire the world had yet seen.[19] The empire collapsed in 330 BC following the conquests of Alexander the Great. The area eventually regained influence under the Parthian Empire and rose to prominence once more after the establishment of the Sasanian dynasty (Neo-Persian empire) in 224 AD, under which Iran again became one of the leading powers in the world along with the Byzantine Empire for the next four centuries.[20] Manichaeism and Zoroastrianism were largely replaced after Rashidun Muslims invaded Persia in 633 AD, and conquered it by 651 AD.[21] Iran thereafter played a vital role in the subsequent Islamic Golden Age, producing numerous influential scientists, scholars, artists, and thinkers. The emergence in 1501 of the Safavid dynasty, which promoted the Twelver school of thought as the official religion, marked one of the most important turning points in Iranian and Muslim history.[5][22][23] It also culminated into tensions, which in 1514 led to the Battle of Chaldiran. Starting in 1736 under Nader Shah, Iran would once again reach high prominence, reaching its greatest territorial extent since the Sassanid Empire, and briefly possessing what was arguably the most powerful empire in the world.[24] The Persian Constitutional Revolution of 1906 established the nation's first parliament, which operated within a constitutional monarchy. Following a coup d'état instigated by the UK and the US in 1953, Iran gradually became autocratic. Growing dissent against foreign influence and political repression culminated in the Iranian Revolution, which led to the establishment of an Islamic republic on 1 April 1979. Thank You! God Bless

Fox News 2013-12-19Davis Bunn, four-time Christy Award winner releases Strait of Hormuz Tuesday, ... Strait of Hormuz:
The Examiner 2013-11-07The Strait of Hormuz /hɔrˈmuːz/ (Arabic: مَضيق هُرمُز Maḍīq Hurmuz, Persian: تَنگِه هُرمُز Tangeh-ye Hormoz) is a narrow, strategically important strait between the Gulf of Oman in the southeast and the Persian Gulf. On the north coast is Iran and on the south coast is the United Arab Emirates and Musandam, an exclave of Oman.
The strait at its narrowest is 21 nautical miles (39 km) wide. It is the only sea passage to the open ocean for large areas of the petroleum-exporting Persian Gulf and is one of the world's most strategically important choke points. Around 20% of the world's oil, which is about 35% of seaborne traded oil, passes through the strait.
The opening to the Persian Gulf was described, but not given a name, in the Periplus of the Erythraean Sea, a 1st-century mariner's guide:
In the 10th to 17th centuries AD, the Kingdom of Ormus, which seems to have given the strait its name, was located here. Scholars, historians and linguists derive[dead link] the name "Ormuz" from the local Persian word هورمغ Hur-mogh meaning date palm.[dubious – discuss] In the local dialects of Hurmoz and Minab this strait is still called Hurmogh and has the aforementioned meaning.[citation needed] The resemblance of this word with the name of the Persian God هرمز Hormoz (a variant of Ahura Mazda) has resulted in the popular belief[citation needed][neutrality is disputed] that these words are related.
