A world away from the perfect fairways of the pro golf tour, Colin Montgomerie gave a master class in one of the world's unlikeliest driving ranges. For over an hour he gave personal coaching to forces golf fans spread out across the windswept dust of Camp Bastion, Britain's massive supply base in Afghanistan. As he expertly drove ball-after-ball onto targets borrowed from the rifle ranges, he joked how helicopter gunships low overhead might cramp his drive. The Ryder Cup-winning captain spent four days in Afghanistan between international tournaments, boosting morale and equipping Bastion's very first Golf course, with thousands of pounds worth of donated equipment. He told troops he did not realise how few stars had risked a trip to Helmand. "I thought there were so-called celebrities and sportsmen out here on a weekly basis." "But it doesn't happen. This is irregular and it's fantastic to come out here and showcase golf to you guys."

Australia's War In Afghanistan - War & Military Documentary Australia's military involvement Australia joined the US-led invasion of Afghanistan in 2001, following the September 11 attacks on the United States. Australia withdrew its forces in 2002 and re-deployed in 2005. Currently, about 1,500 Australian soldiers are stationed in Afghanistan. 11 Australian military personnel have died in Afghanistan. There have been a total of 1672 coalition military deaiths from Operation Enduring Freedom, according to icasualties website (to 1 March 2010). (Note that this website gives a slightly lower total figure for deaiths in and around Afghanistan) Australia has spent $3.6 billion or more, in Afghanistan, and has budgeted $1.2 billion to spend in 2009-2010. The cost of a new school in Afghanistan would be $US128,000. PM Kevin Rudd's approach is that the "war on terror" remains a priority of Australia's approach to security. In April 2009, MAPW wrote to the PM at a time when the government was reconsidering its stance in Afghanistan, recommending that Australian troops be withdrawn. The impacts of the war for Afghans Estimates of the number of direct civilian deaiths vary greatly, but the figure is likely to be over 20,000 (I). The New York Times reported civilian deaiths were rising by 40% compared to the previous year (Feb 2009). Recent wars in Afganistan have forced millions of Afghanis to leave their homes, with over 3.7 million displaced over the past two decades, including 1.5 million in Iran, 2 million in Pakistan and 235,000 within Afghanistan. Recent studies show local people to be increasingly sceptical regarding the outcome of the military intervention. Increasing numbers believe that security is deteriorating. Most Afghanis think that warlords have retained or increased the amount of weapons in their possession. This lack of faith is seen as due to insurgent activity, corruption within the security forces, the misuse of power by local warlords and the negative influence of neighbouring states (Care International, March 2009). Wars in Afghanistan, including the current one, have also caused major environmental destruction. A decline in safe drinking water has been reported as resulting from destruction of water infrastructure, bacterial contamination and water theft. Much of the major forests which once covered Afghanistan have been destroyed by warfare - through Taliban members illegally trading timber in Pakistan, by US bombings, and by refugees' need for firewood. Today, less than 2 per cent of the country is forested (Agence France Presse, June 2008) bbc documentary, bbc, national geographic, documentary, national geographic documentary,Structure, documentaries, documentary films, documentaries discovery channel, documentary bbc, documentary history channel, documentaries discovery channel full length, documentary full,hd documentaries, bbc documentary, discovery channel documentary, discovery channel, discovery channel, documentary bbc, documentary history channel, documentary national geographic, documentaries discovery channel full length, documentary full,hd documentaries, bbc, documentary, discovery channel documentary, discovery channel, national geographic, national geographic, national geographic animals, national geographic channel, national geographic documentary, national geographic documentary animals, bbc documentary, documentary, bbc, documentaries, documentary films, documentaries, discovery channel, documentary bbc, documentary history channel, documentary national, geographic, documentaries discovery channel full length, documentary full,hd documentaries, bbc documentary, discovery channel documentary, discovery channel, national geographic documentary,2013,HD,hd,bbc, bbc horizon, travel documentary, travel documentary films, travel channel documentaries, documentary bbc, serial killer documentary, ufo documentary, north korea documentary, slender man documentary, documentary films, lil wayne documentary, bbc documentary, national geographic documentary, history channel documentary, documentary, discovery channel documentary, history channel, national geographic, the game, vietnam war documentary, discovery channel, documentary history channel documentaries, documentary bbc, serial killer documentary, ufo documentary, north korea documentary, slender man documentary, documentary films, lil wayne documentary, bbc documentary, national geographic documentary, history channel documentary, documentary, discovery channel documentary, history channel, national geographic, the game, vietnam war documentary, discovery channel, documentary history, channel documentary,hd documentary, documentary hd,full documentary, full documentary hd,documentary long, long, full,hd, hitler, titanic http://youtu.be/RmgivXB7Lx4

Subscribe to VICE News here: http://bit.ly/Subscribe-to-VICE-News There's an eerie sense of calm to Kabul ahead of Saturday's elections, as government security forces place the city under lockdown in an attempt to neutralise any Taliban attacks before they happen. The first round of the presidential elections, back in April, were surprisingly peaceful- at least within the Kabul security bubble- but the Taliban have publicly vowed to disrupt Saturday's runoff, warning voters to stay away from polling stations. Rumors are swirling around the capital of Taliban assault teams already in place and armed with heavy weapons and magnetic bombs, and in response army, police and intelligence service checkpoints have sprung up on every intersection in Kabul, choking the city's already dense traffic into a packed stream of honking horns and eye-watering exhaust fumes. The Taliban threat is very real: only last week, the frontrunner, presidential candidate Dr Abdullah Abdullah narrowly survived a coordinated suicide bomb attack which killed three of his staff and a number of bystanders, reducing his armoured car to a shrapnel-peppered hunk of charred steel. Since then, Abdullah's electioneering has been restricted to his fortified Kabul compound, with streams of tribal elders and representatives of the country's interest groups different filing into his media centre throughout the day to listen to near-identical speeches and announce their support for his presidential bid. VICE NEWS was granted a brief audience with Abdullah, in which he brushed aside the suggestion that the sudden jihadist blitzkrieg on Iraq heralded a glimpse of Afghanistan's future after ISAF troops pull out. "Those are very serious events," Abdullah said, "[but] in Afghanistan the majority of the people have rejected the Talibanization of the country. They don't have a place, and I am sure that with the legitimacy of the future government based on transparent elections, the state institutions will be strengthened. I am not concerned about that scenario here in Afghanistan. Security is a challenge for the country and will be a challenge for the country, and support from the international community will be needed. There are problems, there are challenges, but there are ways to deal with it." Asked whether he saw a negotiated settlement between an Abdullah administration and the Taliban who'd just tried to assassinate him, he remarked that "the end result, the projection of the end of this conflict, of course there needs to be a negotiated settlement. When is it that it is possible to achieve it, that's a different issue. That does not mean we should not take serious steps and genuine steps to pursue negotiations, but that does not take one side; it also takes the other side. So, on the Afghan side I think genuine serious efforts for pursuing negotiations and offers should be made. At the same time we should protect our own citizens, we should strengthen the security of the country and pursue the programmes which is dealing with the priorities of the majority of the people, like governance, like the fight against corruption, rule of law, and delivering to the people the delivery of services." In practice, Afghanistan's central government has a shaky hold at best on much of the country, severely limiting its ability to provide any of the above aspirations outside major urban centres. But Kabul, buoyed, until recently, by an economic boom derived from aid money, expats and local corruption and secured like a fortress by its heavy foreign and Afghan military presence, presents a vision of what a semi-stable future Afghanistan might look like. A violence-free election will provide a major propaganda boost for the incoming government, and the security services have thrown vast resources at ensuring this outcome. In a bid to reassure the populace polling day will take place smoothly, Kabul's police chief summoned dozens of journalists on a tour of the city, cramming dozens of cameramen into police pickup trucks, which careered around the congested streets in a long convoy of blaring sirens and shakily-held camcorders, producing choking clouds of dust and the bewilderment of passersby.

April 2003 The Taliban may have been defeated but Afghanistan remains dangerous and unstable. Now there are concerns about the level of US commitment. In recent weeks, foreign troops have come under increasing attack from rebels. Fundamentalists have threatened to kill supporters of the 'infidel government' and vast swathes of the country have been declared 'no-go areas'. However, the main threat to stability comes from warlords like Pacha Khan Zadran. During the war, he helped Americans seize airfields and provided 600 soldiers for their campaign. In return, he was promised the governorship of Gardez but when he did not receive this, he shelled the town, killing 25 people. Afghans complain that America has not done enough to help rebuild their country. As in Iraq, the US military has taken on elements of reconstruction -- a role usually reserved for UN and aid agencies. These organisations claim the army's actions are backfiring and endangering their workers. "By getting involved they are blurring the distinction between NGOs and the military," complains a CARE International worker. The murder of a Red Cross aid worker last month gives added weight to her concerns. The flow of aid to Afghanistan has slowed and President Karzai's repeated pleas for help are increasingly falling on deaf ears. The fear now is that with America distracting with Iraq, things can only get worse. Produced by SBS/Dateline Distributed by Journeyman Pictures

The fruit of years of collaborative work between Afghan and Western photographers and photojournalists, Streets of Afghanistan chronicles one of the most captivating efforts to connect communities and cultures through our common humanity and the power of art. After an extremely successful tour in the United States, the "Streets of Afghanistan" project returned to Afghanistan, to give the exhibit's subjects an opportunity to see themselves in a new light. Impressive and captivating on both sides of the world, Streets of Afghanistan collects both the photographs and the cultural import of a misunderstood region into one visually striking book. Looking at the photographs, it is easy to immerse yourself in a culture which was previously unknown to many Western audiences. In the pages of this inspiring book, readers will find themselves being led through the beautiful vistas of Afghanistan, introduced to its people, and exposed to their joys and their sorrows--all through these incredible photographs. Streets of Afghanistan is more than just a book or a photo album; it is an opportunity to expand your horizons. A collection of the spectacular photography of the Mountain2Mountain (M2M) project--a collaborative effort between Western and Afghan photographers--Streets of Afghanistan is a striking combination of art and activism that is sure to change your entire perspective on the Afghan culture. Complete with short descriptions that allow the reader to follow the footsteps of the M2M project as they explored the hidden beauties of this faraway land, Streets of Afghanistan is more than just a book--it is a strong step towards closing the divide between East and West. GLORIOUS, FULL COLOR PHOTOS OF A RARELY CAPTURED CULTURE. These visually stunning photographs of a culture rarely captured on film transport the viewer directly into the world and mindset of the Afghan people. A VISUAL AMBASSADOR TO A MISUNDERSTOOD PEOPLE. Shannon Galpin, founder of M2M, on the importance of her project: "[People think that] because this is a country fraught with conflict and poverty that art doesn't have much importance. I disagree. I think art is all the more important here." A MESSAGE OF HOPE FROM A PROJECT FOR PEACE. Shannon Galpin on her hopes for the project: "Art has the power to inspire, to spark conversation, and to bring joy--showcasing these images in public areas where Afghans can enjoy art for art's sake, and be proud of the beauty and spirit of their country." Shannon Galpin founded Mountain2Mountain in November 2006 to work towards connecting communities to combat the apathy that prevents action, and to change perceptions. After four years working in various parts of Afghanistan working with women and girls, Shannon developed long-term strategies that focused on cyclical solutions in conflict zones globally that focused on connecting communities and sparking conversation. Shannon writes regularly for Huffington Post and Matador Network, and is currently writing her first book. She has been featured on Dateline NBC, Today Show, Huffington Post and in Outside Magazine. Her first TEDx talk was in 2012 on the Power of Voice which best illustrates the thread that links all of her work together. A journey through the parts of Afghanistan that don't normally feature in news coverage to meet some amazing people and see fascinating places. Lyse Doucet uses her many years experience in Afghanistan to show a different side of a country which has been at war for 30 years.
Once a vital piece of the hippy trail, well disposed, wonderful Afghanistan has unfortunately been crushed by years of war and disregard. Home to ample farmland and the rough Hindu Kush mountain range, explorers desired the acceptable mountain air and to see attractions like the monster Buddha statues of Bamiyan. Then again, the statues and numerous different landmarks were wrecked under the cataclysmic rule of the Taliban, a gathering of Islamic aggressors. - See more at: http://www.helpskhmers.com/afghanistan-travel-guide/#sthash.3QZhOt6c.dpuf Afghanistan Travel Guide, World Travel Guides, SCC Education Kampong Thom Cambodia,

Damien Degueldre caught exclusive footage of the Mazar-el Sharif uprising where John Walker – better known as the ‘American Taliban’ – was captured as he fought on Taliban frontlines. An incredible testimony on the aftermath of 9/11 and the events that took place in Afghanistan in the early days of the « War on Terror ». Hidden Gems: Afghanistan is not only a country in perpetual turmoil, but also a geological miracle. Can they now harness 1,000 billion Euros worth of natural resources in order to lift the nation out of poverty? For downloads and more information visit: http://www.journeyman.tv/?lid=67019 "We have a lot of requests from Europe because the Emeralds from Afghanistan are the best in the world", Raphael says. He's a Frenchman who first came to Afghanistan to train Afghan security services before venturing into the emerald trade. He sees a huge chance here to exploit a market that could easily increase in value twenty or thirty-fold, but the obstacles are not inconsiderable. Just to get to the mines Raphael has to travel the 150 Kilometres from Kabul to Panjshir, right through Taliban kidnap country. When he gets there he finds an industry in the dark ages, where homemade pyrotechnics are exploded in poorly dug mineshafts, killing many miners and ruining the quality of up to 75% of the stones they dig. "If you see the damage being done to these stones... so much is lost", Yama Torabi from Integrity Watch Afghanistan tells us. The government here remains hopelessly out of touch with the industry that "still (uses) a mining law adopted 100 years ago". But as the country prepares for elections and Europeans like Raphael open up the gem trade here, could this be a beacon of hope for the future? "Operation Enduring Freedom" (OEF) is the official name used by the U.S. government for the War in Afghanistan, together with a number of smaller military actions, under the umbrella of the Global "War on Terror" (GWOT). The operation was originally called "Operation Infinite Justice" (often misquoted as "Operation Ultimate Justice"), but as similar phrases have been used by adherents of several religions as an exclusive description of God, it is believed to have been changed to avoid offense to Muslims, who are the majority religion in Afghanistan U.S. President George W. Bush's remark that "this crusade, this war on terrorism, is going to take a while", which prompted widespread criticism from the Islamic world, may also have contributed to the renaming of the operation

In episode one Rory Stewart tells the story of British interventions in Afghanistan in the 19th century, when the British Empire became obsessed with the idea that their rival, Russia, was considering the invasion of Afghanistan as a staging post for an attack on British India. It was a period of mutual suspicion and paranoia that later became known as "The Great Game". Afghanistan was perceived by Victorian Britain, as it's believed to be today, to be an immediate threat to British national security. In this first film, Rory Stewart tells the story of the decision-making that led to the first British invasion of Afghanistan, and the three Anglo-Afghan wars fought in this era. And he tells the story of Afghanistan's unlikely reaction to this period. When an Afghan-elite made a futile attempt to impose western-inspired ideas and modernity on the country

In a country that has been ravaged by three decades of war, this investigative report explores the daily lives of a population trying to move forward with their lives. Afghanistan is trying to recover from a lifetime's worth of strife and thanks to international aid efforts life is slowly beginning to change. Mountain villages have benefited from reservoirs whilst children of Kabul are increasingly attending schools. "For them, going to school is like being in a different world, a world where they simply are children." Yet problems remain. Many families in Kabul rely on their children to work. "If you are poor, this job is all you get", says 12 year old Navid, who works as a porter. A bright future for Afghanistan seems possible but it is in jeopardy without a comprehensive aid strategy, sound governance and financing. These intimate diaries reveal the adversity that girls face in one of the world's most conservative countries. "A girl has to fight for her rights from the day she's born until the day she dies", explains Nargis. She and her friends bravely spread the message of equality in a country where the hanging and beheading of women remains commonplace. Facing conservative jibes for walking out without head scarves or for driving a car, these girls must also deal with the bigger worry of random terrorist attacks: "Who knows whether we'll be the next victims", they say. An ex-Soviet soldier in Afghanistan hasn't returned to the motherland in more than 25 years. He remembers 1983 like it was yesterday: It was the height of the Soviet war in Afghanistan, and the USSR had brought a communist regime to power in the country and provided it with economic and military supported. He fought on the Soviet side of the conflict, but was captured by the Mujahideen. The ex-soldier now lives in Afghanistan, and has a wife and four children. Blood, Smack Tears Afghanistan's Heroin Hell BBC Full Documentary 2014 Afghanistan has a drugs problem. A big one. It has some of the highest rates of heroin addiction anywhere - over a million Afghans are now problem drug users. This film follows the fortunes of two young heroin addicts - Jawad and Babrak - as they try to kick their smack habits and get their lives back together. It's a deeply personal portrait of hope and fear in a country ravaged by war, poverty and hard drugs.
There is fear and desperation in their empty eyes. They have no livelihood and no work; and their growing children receive no education. Their daughters do not have much hope of finding suitable matches; and they are not certain where the next meal would come from. Many women and children live in Gurdwaré, Sikh place of worship relying on free kitchen And so, a young adventurous Afghan Sikh, Pritpal Singh, who had left Afghanistan 2 decades ago, set out from the UK to document the suffering of fellow Afghan Sikhs and Hindus communities in Afghanistan. The film "MISSION AFGHANISTAN" portrays the life and hardships of minorities in War-torn Afghanistan." Those who could afford it, left the country. Those left behind have hardly any means of support. They have no present and no future. These are Sikh women with children, widows and families left behind in a war-riven Afghanistan. Together with the Hindu community, their numbers are dwindling, as they live from day to day in many towns in Afghanistan. The situation of women is made worse because this is a conservative country where women are confined to walled enclosures and cannot go out to work. Even Gurdwaré of great historical significance are in a state neglect and disrepair. The country has been torn apart by war for decades and peace is not in sight when the Americans, British and other foreign (NATO- ISAF) troops leave. For minorities like the Sikhs and Hindus, the situation is quite hopeless. As a Sikh lady points out in the documentary, they cannot just depend on short term handouts by generous Sikhs from abroad. The need is for sustained support projects which set up schools and also provide work for the poorer Sikhs in Afghanistan. Much can be done by the more prosperous business Afghan Sikhs who are doing well in Sikh diaspora countries like the UK, Germany, India, UAE & US. Funded by Gurdwara Guru Nanak Darbar, Southall (UK), Pritpal had only a very limited budget. The main advantage of this low budget but professionally produced documentary was that, with one local cameraman, and dressed as an Afghan fluent in Farsi & Hindko, Pritpal was able to merge and mix with communities, and keep a low profile in a highly dangerous environment. Travelling on mined countryside roads, strewn with destroyed army vehicles, he was able to film remote places and intermingle with communities in a war zone. This is a country where tourists make attractive targets for hostage-taking by terrorists, and filming crews have to travel with convoys. Pritpal returned from this dangerous mission with, in his words, "The treasure of well over 1500 photographs and films of key historical Gurdwaré, Mandir & Mosques of Afghanistan - something which has never been done in past!" He travelled to Kabul, Jalalabad, Sorkhrod, Agha Sarai, Charikar, Salang and Ghazni. Truly, his mission to bring out the truth about the desperate condition of his fellow Sikhs in a country where their forefathers lived for thousands of years, is a remarkable achievement. He loves his country of birth and is concerned that "if they migrate to other countries, our history and our historical sites will vanish". It is a highly informative journalistic documentary. In Hindko, English, Farsi, Panjabi & Pashto with English subtitles. Big News Network 2015-04-11Afghanistan i/æfˈɡænɨstæn/ (Persian/Pashto: افغانستان, Afġānistān), officially the Islamic Republic of Afghanistan, is a landlocked country located in the centre of Asia, forming part of South Asia, Central Asia, and Greater Middle East, it is also considered to be part of a broader West Asia. With a population of about 29 million, it has an area of 647,500 km2 (250,001 sq mi), making it the 42nd most populous and 41st largest nation in the world. It is bordered by Pakistan in the south and the east, Iran in the west, Turkmenistan, Uzbekistan and Tajikistan in the north, and China in the far northeast.
Afghanistan has been an ancient focal point of the Silk Road and human migration. Archaeologists have found evidence of human habitation from as far back as 50,000 BC. Urban civilization may have begun in the area as early as 3,000 to 2,000 BC. Sitting at an important geostrategic location that connects the Middle East with Central Asia and the Indian subcontinent, the land has been home to various peoples through the ages and witnessed many military campaigns, notably by Alexander the Great, Genghis Khan, and in modern era Western forces. The land also served as a source from which the Greco-Bactrians, Kushans, Saffarids, Ghaznavids, Ghorids, Timurids, Mughals and many others have risen to form major empires.
