The River Thames is 215 miles long and has been an important trade route throughout its history. Some people believe that the Romans may have been influenced by the Thames when they were choosing where to build London. According to the Museum in Docklands, the river was probably only tidal to where the City of London now sits when the Romans were choosing a site. There are 44 locks on the non-tidal Thames, which begins nears Cirencester and ends at Teddington Lock. The first bridge in the capital was located where the current London Bridge stands. It has been rebuilt many times since the Romans first constructed a river crossing there around 2,000 years ago. Before engineer Sir Joseph Bazalgette built London’s sewer system, much of the capital’s waste was dumped in the river. In 1858, the stench from the river was so overpowering that Parliament had to be suspended and the government decided to find a way to rid the Thames of sewage. French Impressionist Claude Monet painted the Thames three times. One of the most famous of these paintings is the Thames below Westminster. It depicts the river, Westminster Bridge and the Houses of Parliament on a spring day. In pre-19th century London, cold winter weather would sometimes freeze the surface of the Thames. ‘Frost Fairs’ would be held on the ice, with Londoners enjoying dancing and drinking. The last fair was in 1814 and it appears unlikely there will ever be another one because the river now flows too fast for the water to freeze. The Romans developed the Port of London around 50AD when they established a settlement called Londinium on the River Thames. It later became a major trading and ship building area for the Saxons, Normans and Tudors. London was a port long before it became a great city and the capital of England. During the 16th century London became a centre of shipbuilding and repair. In 1558 a commission was set up to select legal quays for imports and by 1576 London was the world’s foremost trading port. In the 18th century the Port struggled to cope and Parliament authorised the building of two new docks and a range of warehouses on the Isle of Dogs. They were opened on 22 August, 1802. Later, in the 19th century, more docks opened including the East India Dock, Millwall dock and the Royal Albert Dock. The Port of London Authority Trade flourished on London's docks but by the end of the 19th century improvement works were desperately needed. With no clear way forward, a Royal Commission conducted a governing review. A report issued in June 1902 recommended creating a central body – the Port of London Authority – which started its duties on 31 March 1909. Since 1909 the new Port of London authority was obliged to provide quays, wharfs and warehouses. The PLA’s first project was a deepwater shipping channel – part of a £12m works’ programme which included the Tilbury Docks extension, and a cargo jetty at King George V Dock. These projects were delayed as a consequence of the 1912 dock strike. The Great Dock Strike The BBC is not responsible for the content of external websites During the 1920s and 30s further expansion and development included the King George V dock completed, the 15-acre Quebec Dock and a new group lock completed at Blackwall Reach and South Dock formerly City Canal. World War II The Thames and London's Docks suffered heavily during the Second World War.

(Originally aired 12/21/11) Elvis Mitchell welcomes author Steve Stoliar to KCRW's "The Treatment." If you are a lover of Groucho Marx, you owe Stoliar a debt of gratitude. As a college student at UCLA in 1974, he spear-headed a petition to Universal Studios that ultimately resulted in the famous re-release of Animal Crackers, now considered to be a cornerstone in the Marx Brothers' repertoire. At the age of 19, Stoliar, a die-hard Groucho fanatic, received the opportunity of a lifetime: to work in Groucho's home as his personal secretary. Years later, he documented his experience in the memoir, Raised Eyebrows: My Years Inside Groucho's House," which was recently re-published to commemorate its 15th anniversary. On this edition of "The Treatment," Steve Stoliar shares memories, lessons, and his dead-on Groucho Marx impression. To order a signed copy of the newly expanded edition of RAISED EYEBROWS, go to www.stevestoliar.com Kindle and Audio versions are available on Amazon.com

This is 12 hours on the 16th of December 2014, at Greenwich Peninsula, in London, compacted into a little less than 29 minutes. You'll have a nice view of River Thames, the Emirates Air Line cable car service, and the London River Bus service dropping off and picking up passengers at North Greenwich Pier. Across the river, you'll see Docklands Light Railway trains travelling east and west, planes taking off and landing at London City Airport, and steam rising from the Tate & Lyle sugar and syrup factories. As well as the river service catamarans, you'll see tugs, barges and, if you pay attention, a little bit of the Thames Flood Barrier (on the right and in the distance). Look up and you'll see clouds and plane condensation trails waft past. Look just to the right of the closest cable car tower and you'll see warehouse doors opening and closing on the other side of the river. I apologise for the blurred picture quality in the darker parts of this video. I left auto-focus on by mistake and it had trouble deciding which bright spot to concentrate on. Oh, and sorry about that piece of dirt on the right of the picture and the reflection of a white pillar on the left.

Initial design idea from Ove Arup & Partners Ltd, with Hopkins Architects and Grant Associ... Ove Arup's other design was put together with Hopkins Architects and Grant Associates. It too features curved ramps to provide access at either end, but uses pillars for structural support rather than an arch. According to Wandsworth Council, the finalists were selected by a jury that included council leader Ravi Govindia, architect Graham Stirk, engineer Henry Bardsley and Design Council Commission for Architecture and the Built Environment (CABE) chair Pam Alexander. Feedback from more than 1,000 members of the public was considered, as well as technical assessments for each proposal. The shortlisted teams will now develop their concepts into more detailed designs before the winning entry is announced later this year. The project is already partly financed, but any new bridge would require planning permission before being built.

Thames Path is a National Trail, first proposed in 1948 opened in 1996, following the length of the River Thames from its source near Kemble in Gloucestershire to the Thames Barrier at Charlton. It is about 184 miles long. (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Thames_Path) The section of the path in this video is in the Isle of Dogs neighbourhood nearly across from the Royal Borough of Greenwich where the National Maritime Museum, the Royal Naval College and the ship Cutty Sark are located.

Crew rescues three people clinging to life in the Thames River Crew rescues three people clinging to life in the Thames River Crew rescues three people clinging to life in the Thames River (Volume Warning) Two Spanish tourists were saved from drowning by a lifeboat crew today - along with a bar worker who had tried to rescue them but ended up in difficulties himself. The drama happened in the early hours in the Thames in central London. The Royal National Lifeboat Institution (RNLI) said a lifeboat was launched at 1.32am to reports of people in the water near Temple Pier, on the north bank of the river. As the boat based at nearby Tower lifeboat station arrived at the scene, the crew could see three people, aged in their 20s, clinging for their lives to the river wall, out of reach of a crowd of horrified onlookers gathered on the Embankment above. Lifeboat station manager Kevin Maynard said: "We could hear shouting as we arrived and someone in the crowd was flashing a light into the water to guide us to the casualties. As the boat arrived on scene, one of the men lost his grip on the wall and sank below the water. "In a panic, he then grabbed one of the other men and pulled him from the wall, with both men now struggling to stay afloat. We arrived just in time and got all three safely aboard the lifeboat. Forks of the Thames River, London, Ontario, Canada. Taken around 9:00 a.m. on Thursday, 19 March 2015. One reason I took this video at this early time of day is the low traffic volume. Safety is always a paramount concern. Many years ago, when I trained as a private pilot (Piper Cherokee 140 & 150, if you are interested), the very first thing any pilot is taught is the pilot always, always has final responsibility for each and every flight. I apply the same principles to the operation of my drones. Therefore, even crossing a street, I look ahead of time, just like you would if crossing on foot. This video was taken with a Yuneec (pronounced “UNIQUE” ) Q500 Typhoon with the CGO2-GB camera & gimbal mounted underneath. The first pass was at roughly 100 feet / 30 meters high, and the second pass was at 290 feet / 88 meters. In Canada, the legal limit is 30 meters / 300 feet, but that is really good. Much higher than that you can loose sight of your drone. The temperature outside was around -2C, or about 28F. Cold air is both more dense than warm air, making the propellers work harder, and the cold can shorten battery power too. I found that I had almost 19 minutes of operating time on a fully charged battery. I think the "up to 25 minutes of flight time" as advertised is for operation at or around 21C / 70F, not the cold. But I am happy with the time I had, and how the Q500 handled in the cold air. Please feel free to pass on this video to anyone you like. I hope to over the year explore this heritage river with more videos, as a sign of respect to the spirits of my Anishinaabe ancestors, so that they know I have not forgotten the land or the people. The video is very long, about 20 minutes, so even if you watch only a few minutes or seconds, or fast forward through parts, please enjoy. Thank you for watching.

Nightcam footage captured the dramatic moment when three men were saved from drowning in London's river early on Tuesday morning (March 17). Two Spanish tourists and a local bar worker who got into difficulty when he jumped into the Thames to try and rescue them were pulled from the river by the RNLI ( Royal National Lifeboat Institute), the emergency service said. The RNLI lifeboat crew launched at 0132GMT after receiving reports of people in the water by the city's Temple Pier. The three men, all in their twenties, were holding onto a river wall for their lives, as a crowd of onlookers watched from the embankment. Tower RNLI lifeboat station manager, Kevin Maynard said one of the men lost their grip on the wall, sank below the water and pulled another man down just as the lifeboat arrived. All three men swallowed large amounts of water and one was suffering with hypothermia when they were transferred to the London ambulance service care, Maynard said. Maynard warned against entering the Thames in London, which is known for its strong river currents and fast tides, and said the three men were lucky to be alive. The Daily Telegraph 2015-04-08The brothers James "Jim" Lloyd Mitchell (November 30, 1943 – July 12, 2007) and Artie Jay Mitchell (December 17, 1945 – February 27, 1991) were pioneers in the pornography and striptease club business in San Francisco and other parts of California from 1969 until 1991, when Jim was convicted of killing Artie.
They opened the O'Farrell Theatre in 1969 as an adult cinema and at one time operated 11 such businesses; they produced and directed many adult films, including Behind the Green Door in 1972. They were also successful as the defendants in many obscenity cases. The Mitchells' notoriety significantly increased with Jim's fratricide; they became the subject of three books, X-Rated by David McCumber, Bottom Feeders by John Hubner, 9½ Years Behind the Mitchell Brothers' Green Door by Simone Corday and one movie, Rated X.
The Mitchells' father, Robert (known to all as Bob), an "Okie," was a professional gambler. He and his wife, Georgia Mae, settled in Antioch, near San Francisco and, according to the Mitchell brothers' biographers, provided a relatively stable childhood for Jim and Artie; the boys were popular and their childhood friends would become important members of the Mitchells' porn empire.
