Joseph Mallord William TurnerRA (23 April 1775 – 19 December 1851) was an English Romanticlandscape painter, watercolourist and printmaker. Turner was considered a controversial figure in his day, but is now regarded as the artist who elevated landscape painting to an eminence rivaling history painting. Although renowned for his oil paintings, Turner is also one of the greatest masters of British watercolour landscape painting. He is commonly known as "the painter of light" and his work is regarded as a Romantic preface to Impressionism.
Joseph Mallord William Turner was born on or around the 23 April 1775 in Maiden Lane, Covent Garden, London, England. His father, William Turner (1738–7 August 1829), was a barber and wig maker, His mother, Mary Marshall, came from a family of butchers. A younger sister, Mary Ann Turner, was born in September 1778 but died aged four in August 1783.
Edward Benjamin Britten, Baron Britten,OMCH (22 November 1913 – 4 December 1976) was an English composer, conductor, and pianist; and one of the central figures of 20th century British classical music. He showed talent from an early age, and first came to public attention with the a cappella choral work A Boy Was Born in 1934. With the premiere of his opera Peter Grimes in 1945, he leapt to international fame. For the next fifteen years he devoted much of his compositional attention to writing operas, establishing him as one of the leading 20th century figures in this genre.
Britten's interests as a composer were wide-ranging; he produced important music in such varied genres as orchestral, choral, solo vocal (much of it written for his life partner, tenor Peter Pears), chamber and instrumental, as well as film music. He also took a great interest in writing music for children and amateur performers, and was an outstanding pianist and conductor.
Britten was born in Lowestoft, Suffolk, on 22 November 1913, the youngest of four children. His father, Robert, was a dentist, and his mother Edith, a talented amateur musician who gave Britten his first lessons in piano and notation. He showed musical gifts very early in life, making his first attempts at composition aged five, and thereafter composing prolifically as a child. He started piano lessons with a teacher from his pre-prep school when aged 7, and viola lessons with Audrey Alston when 10 years old.

JMW Turner is probably Britain's most famous painter. Constable might rival him for instant recognition, but it is Turner who each generation remakes in its image.
As Richard Dorment says in his review: "The phenomenon started in 1840 when John Ruskin, who was raised in the evangelical church, told readers of Modern Painters that Turner’s pictures should be read as moral allegories – to which Turner replied that the critic 'sees more in my pictures than I ever painted.’
More than a century later another critic and painter, Lawrence Gowing, staged an exhibition at New York’s Museum of Modern Art in which he presented the great man essentially an abstract artist, thereby turning him into a precursor of Pollock and Rothko."
The new exhibition at Tate Britain, Late Turner - Painting Set Free looks at the way that Turner's health and his increasing infirmity may have affected the way he painted in his later years. It asks us to look hard at the paintings and question whether they are as the artist intended, or whether some that we most love are simply unfinished.
These are the themes that Alastair Sooke examines in this video, in which he looks in detail at Norham Castle, Sunrise, painted in 1845 and always regarded as one of the great examples of the painter's late style.
There's a lot of interest in Turner at the moment, with Mike Leigh's film Mr Turner, starring Timothy Spall, about to be released on October 31. But ultimately it is in understanding the paintings and looking at them hard that we will understand a little more about the artist's intentions.
The EY Exhibition: Late Turner – Painting Set Free, runs from September 10 until January 25. Tickets: +44 (0) 20 7887 8888; tate.org.uk

In his later years, he used oils ever more transparently, and turned to an evocation of almost pure light by use of shimmering colour. The intensity of hue and interest in evanescent light not only placed Turner's work at the forefront of English Painting, but later exerted an influence upon French Art and particularly the Impressionists, like Claude Monet, who carefully studied Turner's Techniques.

Joseph Mallord William "J. M. W." Turner, RA (baptized 14 May 1775 – 19 December 1851) was an English Romanticist landscape painter, water-colorist, and print-maker. Turner was considered a controversial figure in his day, but is now regarded as the artist who elevated landscape painting to an eminence rivaling history painting. Although renowned for his oil paintings, Turner is also one of the greatest masters of British watercolor landscape painting. He is commonly known as "the painter of light" and his work is regarded as a Romantic preface to Impressionism. Some of his works are cited as examples of abstract art prior to its recognition in the early 20th century.

Alastair Sooke: the JMW Turner painting that launched modern art

Concise 33-minute overview of the life and career of Joseph Mallord William Turner (1775-1851), described on Wikipedia as “an English Romanticist landscape painter, watercolourist, and printmaker. Although renowned for his oil paintings, Turner is also one of the greatest masters of British watercolour landscape painting. He is commonly known as ‘the painter of light’ and his work is regarded as a Romantic preface to Impressionism.”
The film shows lots of his paintings as well as numerous archival illustrations to depict the time he lived in, supplemented by location shots of the places he lived and worked and the sites he visited on his painting trips, including Wales and Italy. Effective narration by Jeremy Irons. Produced in 2007 in conjunction with an exhibit at the National Gallery of Art.
